Lots of waterfront camping space, but if you actually want to be able to sleep in on those hot summer mornings there's also lots of space in the wooded areas to camp. Everything was really clean upon arrival (as clean as it can be for being a camping area) and was kept as such throughout the weekend. Not an easy task when you have 500+ people traipsing around. There's two sets of restrooms (with running water) and the ones at the front also have 2 showers in each bathroom (mens and womens). The showers were much great, hot and good water pressure. There's also a concession area right as you arrive at the campground which carries smaller items (sunglasses, waters, etc) and are super reasonably priced. The only downfall is that you can't swim in the lake (at least not when I was there), but it's a bit murky so I'm not sure if one would want to. They do rent out paddleboats and canoes though for $50 a day with a $50 refundable deposit. There's also some pretty good fishing in the lake. One of my favorite things about this place was the fact that the owner, John, was always on hand. Interacting with patrons, making sure things were running smoothly. He really did a great job of making us feel welcomed. I'll definitely be returning next year :D

The only complaint I have would be the location of the electrical hook ups for the weekend campsites, compared to the fire pit, I felt as if we needed to move our camper further away and fun the extension cord because I was afraid of the fire being to close. Also the campsite we had was not very level, so we had to use several stabilizers to get one side high enough to level out. You have scenery and trail access right from the park, but also a pool, playground, and rec hall. There's a few full hookup sites, two dump stations on the way out of the park in case you had an electric/water site, and propane. Nelson's has a vacation colony of old feel with seasonal sites and themed weekends, and had events/crafts in the rec hall before COVID. The park is also a stone's throw from hiking and biking. Meshomasic State Forest is a short jaunt up the Square Trail--no need to leave the park for a decent hike. Lake Pocotopaug, the Airline Trail and (seasonally of course) leaf peeping. New England stone walls crisscross the Triangle and Square trails. Some of the bathhouses are closed because of pandemic, and the playground is presently closed except for a couple supervised play times, but it's still a great getaway. Our fire pit was like a hearth, and hearing the pond fountain was peaceful. What a great little getaway!

There is a septic service that comes every 2 weeks. We genuinely loved our stay with our beloved dog. Neighbors were quiet and friendly. There is a beautiful beach with gorgeous views of the lake. Our host also owns the AirBnb on the same lot which looks amazing!

I'm just extremely confused on why we still have these stigmas in 2025 and think it needs to be changed. Dogs attitudes are a product of the owners training. Just because a specific dog breed needs more stimulation, enrichment and training to behave correctly does not mean all dogs that belong to that breed are aggressive. Unless you have a golden retriever, i'd steer clear of this place.

Lots of port-a-john near the beaches and a building closer to parking. No swimming was allowed at the beaches. Plenty of fishing though. Nice place to walk and look for shells. The mansion gardens are small and beautiful. Lots of colorful plants. Graceful collonade. Definitely a nice spot for photos. Lots of pollenators enjoying the gardens too. Pathways through the park are a mix of paved and gravel. Watch out for goose poop when crossing through the fields. Pets are welcome on a leash and be sure to pick up after them. State parks are "carry in, carry out" so there are no trash bins. Be sure to bring your own trash bag to dispose of your trash at home.

They have everything you could possible need for a fun family weekend. Each site has water, fire pit, picnic table. The sites are clean, and the place is well maintained. For the most part the other campers are friendly. Pool, playground, game room, crafts, and theme weekend's make this the perfect getaway!! A few things : The closest WM is 30 minutes away, so bring everything you need. The mini golf needs some updating. But, this may be on their to do (as the playground is brand new). No one messes with your stuff as everyone is coming and going from activities. Bring firewood and a grate if you want to cook on open flame. Ticks are full blown this season, so bring tons of spray! Showers .25 /7 minutes! To camp staff, start charging people if they leave litter. We spent plenty of time collecting trash up and down the hill. It's a shame that anyone would find it acceptable considering the staff works so hard to keep it clean! (Personal family motto when it comes to the outdoors "Leave it cleaner than when you found it") (If you wonder why 5 stars... I always rate on the amount of fun my family had, cleanliness, and staff attitudes. I couldn't care less about petty ridiculous menial things)

I thought this was a lovely campground…read more The grounds and restrooms/showers were immaculate. Everything was incredibly well maintained. The sites offer decent privacy. They're not on top of each other, although you can see your neighbors. The staff was wonderful--incredibly friendly. They sell wood if you need wood (for a fair price, too), and they have books to borrow in the check-in cabin if you want a book to read (and movies if you have an RV, or a device that plays movies). There are some decent features to the grounds, also. They have a playground on the campsite, as well as basketball hoops. Right outside the campsite is Thompson lake, where you can fish, boat, and kayak. They have a pretty big disc golf course, which we enjoyed, and some hiking trails. I would definitely come back to this campsite. I'm a big fan of Recreation.gov, and this was one of the better ones I've been to.

We stayed here when the tornado occurred on 8/18/21 and we were fine. The tent kept us nice and dry and it was beautiful and sunny after the storm. If you like hiking, there are some descent trails around the lake and the airline trail is also nearby. Putnam is also a cute little town that is worth a visit. Walmart and grocery stores are about 10 minutes away too. This years hosts and the hosts in 2019 were both incredibly friendly and helpful. They did a great job at keeping the place well maintained.

Tip: It costs $8 to park a single vehicle, and they charge $11 per person for the "privilege" of walking in the general vicinity of the lighthouse.
