I have been a longtime client and trusted Markim Pet Resort with my dog for quite a while, including prepaying thousands of dollars for daycare services. Over the past few months, I noticed significant staff turnover and a change in the overall environment. My dog no longer seemed excited to attend, which raised concerns for me as an owner. When I expressed those concerns to the person now overseeing dog care, the interaction became uncomfortable and defensive. Shortly after, I received a call from the office manager telling me to pick up my dog and that we were no longer welcome back. As a paying longtime customer, I found the handling of the situation extremely disappointing and unprofessional. Pet owners should be able to ask questions or express concerns about their dog's well-being without fear of being dismissed as a client. I truly loved this place at one time, which makes this experience even more upsetting. read more

We made a reservation for 3 nights of Boarding. Each day she got 2 play periods and training. Just like here at home. We walk her each AM/PM. When we picked her up she was happy, and clingy of course, she missed us! Before pickup I had her groomed. What an amazing Job. She was clean soft and smelled so good. I will DEFINATLY TAKE HER TO MARKIM AGAIN! The price was cheaper than the hotel fees. I think she had more fun than we did! read more

I am a new client for markim. My 3 year old lab mix rescue has never stayed with a stranger. But we had to leave town on late notice and markim took her for 2 weeks. She is an anxious little girl, but I received updates upon request and she assimilated well with other puppies during playtime in their care. I've been taking my two cats to Markim for five years. My previous cat that passed six years ago for over 10 years. Just the reaction of my cats when I used to bring them was very comforting. When I would let them out of the pet carrier they would immediately run to the glassed in area and would spend the day there. Because of their personality and their being comfortable with the staff and boarding area, the staff would sometime leave their cage door open often and they would go back and forth from the cage and glassed in area throughout the day . The staff would tell me how much they loved my cats Smelly and Stinky. I dropped the cats off on 4/2 and picked them up of 4/8. When I went to the cat area to pick them up and one of the cats saw the worker, she ran and hid in the back of the cage. She also had feces on her butt and hindquarters. The other cat was in the caged area and came reluctantly when I called her. The more I thought of the experience picking them up I became more concerned. Not sure what I'll be doing in the future when selecting a boarding facility. I will be reading future reviews. read more

I called today asking for a refund on remaining visits for a Camp package that I purchased some time ago because I would no longer be bringing my pup there. At one of his visits there he had a very traumatic experience after Camp and a groom. Upon pickup he was drooling and scared; his tail was tucked underneath him and he was shaking but they said nothing had occurred at camp or at his groom appointment. I since had tried them again and he had a visceral reaction upon pickup again. When I called today, to ask for a refund on my remaining package visits, Betsy the "Manager" was very rude and condescending and said, "I don't care" numerous times throughout the phone call(s). She even hung up on me while I was speaking and when I called back she said the conversation was over...it wasn't. I asked to speak to the manager and she said, "I'm the manager", I asked to speak to someone above her and she said she was it. "Are you the owner" and her reply, "no" and after asking to speak to the owner, "the owner isn't here", was her reply. No offer to have them call me when they are back in the office, nothing. I informed her that I would be making a YELP review based on her rude and unprofessional response and she again said, "I don't care, go right ahead, we have over 200 happy customers and I have been here for 16 years" and then hung up on me. read more

Excellent experience every time. Have boarded our pup there a few times for 5-7 days and she also does the doggy daycare 1-3 a week. Always feel safe and comfortable that our girl will be taken care of. We also had some training done, and although we didn't follow through on finishing the training program, what we did do far exceeded our expectations. Would and do recommend Markim to anyone who needs someone to take care of their pet, whether for a day or a week. And their obedience training is top notch. read more

While I was away I tried several times to reach them by telephone. I could not. When I came to pick up my dog there were three people behind the desk. Two of them were doing nothing, and ignored me to the point of rudeness. They did not return my greeting. The third went to get my dog and he came back with his collar all twisted. It must have been uncomfortable, and it made me wonder what had gone on that I couldn't see while I was away. Perhaps the staff should realize that they are in a competitive business. read more

I have never used the boarding services so can't comment on that aspect. This review is for the Saturday morning intermediate obedience class with Yael. I came to a single class and I was horrified at how Yael treated dogs in this class. I watched him put his full body force into a choke chain correction on a standard poodle. The dog was not doing anything terrible, she just hadn't responded to his cue to lie down from a sitting position facing him. He used both hands and the dog yelped at the force he used. She cowered after this, earning her another sharp correction when she didn't heel when he asked her to. She looked terrified. Modern dog trainers do not correct dogs like this. Since the 90s there has been loads of research on the value of correction and positive reinforcement in dog training. There are methods to train dogs that do not rely on pain and intimidation, but unfortunately Yael does not seem to be aware of this. He spoke of positive reinforcement as "using cookies to bribe your dog", not understanding that in well-executed training, rewards are only presented AFTER the desired behavior is done. This prevents the behavior from being dependent on the presence of a "cookie". So, we have a professional dog trainer demonstrating to a field full of people a violent, two-handed correction, explaining this is how they should treat their animals, who clearly has little knowledge of the many other effective methods to teach basic behavior like "sit" and "down". I am not a professional, but my dog's earned her Canine Good Citizen title as well as multiple AKC agility titles. She behaves well around the house and in public and knows about 30 tricks. I have never used harsh corrections training her. I brought her to this class because we were thinking of getting a second dog and I wanted the opportunity to practice her obedience in a distracting environment with other dogs. I really wasn't expecting to witness a man billing himself as an expert using his full strength to hurt a dog that was literally doing nothing. There are many other dog trainers in the area who do not use these harsh methods, and I strongly recommend that anyone looking for dog training seeks them out. At first I wasn't sure that I should post this review, as I didn't board my dog with Markim. But Yael and his father Salem run these classes together, and Salem owns Markim. After what I saw in training class I would never leave an animal in either of their care. read more

I heard about Camp Run a Muck through a coworker and thought doggie day camp would be perfect for little munchkin since I'm always working. The check in process is questionable at first (at least when I saw the sign on the door I was questioning it), but it makes sense. You leave your dog in the car while you go inside to check them in. Once they're checked in you hop back in your car and drive to the back of camp where you can drop him off. The staff will radio one another so they know when someone's coming. I was a little sad dropping him off, but he was so excited he started to piddle and cry with excitement that it made me happy. You can also bring food/treats to leave with them as well. Day camp is $32 with the drop off time as soon as 7 am and the latest pick up at 6pm. Although there is grass - they play area is mostly dirt so expect a dirty dog when you pick them up. They brush them down before pick up though so they're not entirely dirty - but be prepared to give them a bath once they get home. My white westie came home a little 'tan' I guess you could say :) They also have a pool here as well. On a side note, I felt like I was entering the country side when driving into this place.. dirt roads, tiny one-way bridges to cross over, a small river.. I did not feel like I was in San Diego! The girls are perky and friendly. There are lots of quality toys and treats at reasonable prices. The toys here are way better & more durable than most toys at chains like Petco/Petsmart. read more

I bought our pup Trip a 5 day Camp Run a Muck day camp pass for my brother in law to use while we were on vacation. I thought it be the perfect way to get his energy out, keep him occupied and supervised instead of being home alone during working hours. (I usually take him on adventures but I was on vacay!) Anyways, he passed his temperament test and was good to go! I was nervous in a sense it was like taking my child to his first day of kindergarten. I'm usually always by his side and mama knows him best so letting him go to camp was a big step! All seemed to be going well I got no calls from camp or brother in law any of the days, so I was happy that meant he probably had an amazing time! When we got home Tuesday morning my brother in law said he picked Trip up from camp Monday afternoon and the staff said, "Trip got a little scratch on his ear from another dog playing with a ball" and since they made it seem like no big deal he didn't think twice of it, but when he was home and petting Trip he noticed the "little scratch" was actually pretty gnarly!!! And he wasn't lying when we checked, there was 3 different deep bloody cuts on his ear and head...ouch!!! Luckily no vet visit was needed because he's a healthy boy. No infections just left with scars. My only wish is that staff would of called when the incident happened and NOT sugar coated it. They do not have cameras so no one will ever know, How long did he have the open wound? Did a staff even witness what happened? Were the dogs involved in a fight? Nothing of that sort was said and I like honesty and truth. And for those reasons we will not be back. I'm going to assume they have to many dogs and not enough staff. read more

I'm still very very upset at how Max was treated and how bad he looked when we picked him up! There is no excuse or justification for the way Max was treated. Yes he was very aggressive and would of bitten you given the chance but as " dog trainers" you shouldn't of left him in that kennel the whole time. i picked up my dog this morning from this "pet resort". he stayed there for 4 days and was apart of the "doggie play time" and training. my dog has never had any allergies or problems but when I picked him up his lip on his left side was super irritated and he was red and seemed as if it was bleeding. His paws are also very irritated and red. when I asked the worker what was up with his lip the worker said that it was allergies. allergies on only 1 side of his mouth and why have I never seen this on him? just said okay thank you and left as soon as I could. I could tell my sweet dog was super eager to get out of there. I just feel bad that I sent him here, but for anyone reading this and debating on sending their dog there I would not recommend at all. read more

I wanted to take time to write a review today as I was made aware a few months back a review was written about the way a standard poodle was corrected while in a training class. This was my poodle. I want to be clear she was not hurt in anyway. I made a decision to come to Markim because I am the one that does her training and corrections. I was not instructed to leave her and come back and she is trained. I wanted to make sure she was not hurt or abused in order to have her obey so staying for the one on one training and attending the Saturday classes I know she is safe. She is an amazing dog but has a determined mind set at times which can cause problems for me as she is also very strong. I had to get her in classes where she can learn each week little by little to obey. The day the trainer used her as an example she decided to be drama which with a poodle is often and especially if she is more than two feet from me. She was not hurt and we are still taking classes at Markim. If I ever felt I didn't like the way he worked with her I would ask him not to use her. He always asks if he can use the dog and we always have the option to say No. I am sorry it seemed she was hurt and wanted to make sure I cleared that up. Everyone can make the decision on what works best for your desired training method. I enjoy taking her and spending the time working with her. I have also used the over night stay and when I picked her up she was happy and as healthy as I left her. This was the first time she had ever been left at a kennel so I was very worried but it turned out good. She has come a long way not as fast as other dogs in our class but this could be because of the type of correction I choose to use when correcting her but I am okay with that. My wife and I were with our two dogs in the class that Anna S. attended as an onlooker. Over the years we have worked with at least 7 or 8 different trainers with different dogs, with. quite different philosophies, and Yael is the best teacher we have seen. We would trust our dogs with him any day of the week. While Anna S. observed a strong correction, Yael teaches that corrections should be short, sharp, and uncomfortable, but never to be done in anger or to harm the dog or choke them in any way. Markim is definitely for you and your dog if you want to learn and grow in a humane way that leaves your dog happy to do what you want them to do, without belittling their natural "doggyness." Anna S. saw one correction in one class. We've seen dozens of Yael's corrections over a couple dozen group classes with anywhere from 8-16 dogs in a class. Yael's a first-class act, whose love of dogs shines thru at all times. Judging a dog trainer from 50 feet away on a single correction among dozens and dozens the same day by the owners that Yael taught, and several others he did himself that day, does not do him or Markim justice. read more

My husband and I bring our pup to Markim 2 days a week for daycare, have done multiple private training lessons with Yael, have done boarding while on vacations and have come to the beginner obedience classes on Saturday mornings. All I can say is that this facility has made our pup happy, well rounded and has given us the tools to give her the best life we can provide. I am very happy with the service and care that our pup has gotten at Markim and she is happy to come here. It makes me upset to read the inaccurate review about trainings and the trainers as I can tell they care deeply for each pet that comes through. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG GO HERE!!! Absolute deplorable care for my dog! Scheduled a grooming apt for 10am, dropped my dog off at 9:45am. No communication, tried to call got a busy signal, and my dog was not ready to be picked up until after 3pm!! Almost 7 hours for a dog grooming appointment, and it was the worst looking and inconsistent cut my little dog has ever received for $70! When I got her home, she ran straight to her water dish and drank half the bowl which tells me she was not given water while in their care. I'm furious for the endangerment, excessive time, and money (for the worse service ever received) for my little dog I entrusted in their care. In this day when trying to support local businesses and this is how they treat their customers and a little 13 lbs dog...unforgivable, if this was a child the police would be called! read more

For the past 18 years, I've boarded 4 dogs at Markim and several have gone to Run-a-muck (the doggy day care). They ALL have been very well taken care of. They all have been well played with. The ONLY things that have ever happened is that they've let me know that one of my dogs tore their foot pad because they were playing so much. impossible to get appointments, make you leave your dog at 8 in the morning to be picked up at 4 or 5 in the afternoon, got my dog back, standard poodle that for 6 years never had his ears cut only to pick him up one day looking like a gremlin with no flopping ears as had and should been to be told before receiving, "your dog came out so cute"! Blatant desregarf to what was asked and normal, just covering up a huge mistake! Plenty of people grooming independently! No need to accept this abuse of confidence and on top of it having to beg to get your dog groomed in under 4 weeks only to realize that not only was my dog in a cage for hours on end betune even starting in him and then the surprise that they screed up, cut my standard poodle ears to the point he looked like a gremlin only to be told better getting him back "he came out so cute"! Don't waist your time foe horrible results, many independent groomers will do much better job, no begging, no waiting, no dog stuck in a cage hours before even starting him and no screw ups without remorse! My family is so grateful for the staff and owners of Markim. A family business that is truly filled with love. Salem the owner is a wonderful dog trainer. We brought our newly adopted 10 month old female Great Dane to Salem and with his guidance along with his amazing staff, our JoJo is a wonderful well adjusted happy dane. JoJo also loves going to Camp here. we appreciate that JoJo is with other dogs that are as well behaved, she is safe and supervised the whole day. Our vet is also on the premises once a week and we love him ! JoJo also gets groomed here with great care and love. JoJo has boarded here and she is so happy she does not want to leave! I recommended Salem to our neighbors whose dog at 9 months was a little difficult and they were not sure if they could keep him. Let me start by saying I HATE leaving my dog. He goes everywhere with me. I didn't shop around on where to leave my dog while I was out of town, my trainer told me about this place and I called and went in for a tour. Their prices are a bit high, but it's worth every penny. My pup Axle stayed for five days, and he did the full day of day care with an overnight. He came back to me absolutely exhausted!!! Their facility is incredible and everyone I met that works there is really great with excellent customer service. They make sure every aspect of leaving your animal is covered from what to feed them and how much to any special requests . I highly recommend this place and my dog will be back soon for day care! Wow, I hate to say this but Markim has gone DOWNHILL!! I have gone there off and on for twelve years and the new owner/manager is AWFUL, MEAN and OUTRIGHT RUDE! I also consider her wanting to be borderline abusive towards my dog.. Who would have ever guessed a mix-up with my appointment time would have set her off??!! Well, I sure didn't expect it and innocently walked in to check my dog in for his grooming appointment. She was furious and told me a was extremely late!! I told her I wasn't aware I was late and actually left work early to bring him by the time I was told. No time for her to see what the mix-up was about, all she did was scold me and told me she didn't know if they could take my dog.. she had to go check with the groomer. Of course the Groomer said it was fine, but then she had to be very hateful said, "Your dog will be the last dog groomed and you won't be able to pick him up before 5 or 5:30"!!! Really, you need my dog for 7 and 1/2 hours. I asked if he would be left out to use the restroom but I never got a response!! At that point there was NO WAY I WOULD LEAVE MY DOG with someone so hateful.. and I had enough of her rudeness and let her know I was done with her and that I would never leave my innocent dog with someone so hateful. Asked for the manager but she told me she was the manager (ha). Asked for the owner and she told me he wasn't there. It's been two weeks and I've never heard from the owner so I'm assuming they don't care about customer service anymore! Oh, I also heard she's part owner now.. be careful who you leave your precious animals with.. nothing this minor should have set her off so bad. Ex Markim client. read more

We were referred to Markim when we moved to the area and needed to board our Lab, Molly, while we were on vacation. Unfortunately, it was NOT a good experience, for any of us. As a little background, Molly is 8 years old, and while she has some health issues, she has been boarded at least once a year for her whole life and has never had any issues with any kennel where she's stayed. When we checked Molly in on a Thursday, we were told that because it was her first stay, she could have some complimentary play sessions, which we thought she would really enjoy. On Sunday, though, we got a call from Markim - while we were 1,500 miles away, out of the country - that she was extremely lethargic, fairly non-responsive, and had wet herself in her kennel. They were going to take her to an emergency vet hospital. Turned out that Molly was severely dehydrated, to the point that for a few days, we thought she was going to die. She was eventually cleared to be returned to Markim, but with strict instructions that she was only to rest - no more playtime at all. We went on Saturday to pick her up, not knowing what to expect. And while the shock of her appearance and demeanor was one thing to digest, Markim's actions at this point were even worse. While the staff was glad to report that Molly had made progress, they initially planned on billing us for the days that Molly wasn't there. On the one hand, yes, they'd held the spot for her, but she wasn't there because she had been taken to the hospital because the staff had allowed her to become so severely dehydrated. When we questioned that, the girl at the desk went back to talk to the owners, and came back to say they wouldn't charge us for those days. Good. However, the owners themselves never came out to talk to us. Never called us after the fact to see how she was doing. Nothing. It's been 2 weeks, and we still haven't heard anything, so I doubt we will (unless they respond to this, which they seem to do to negative reviews). From a customer service standpoint, that was deplorable. My dog almost died under their care, and they DON'T care. Or at least that's what it seemed like. And the fact is, Molly DID almost die under their care. When we agreed to take advantage of the play time (or, even, when we agreed to leave her in their care - PERIOD), it was under the assumption and expectation that they would keep an eye on her and make sure that if there were any issues, they'd be identified and addressed before they became life-threatening. That obviously didn't happen. And it's because of that that I will NEVER board my pet there again, and will never recommend them to anyone. UPDATE: The response from Markim's owner is exactly what I expected after seeing responses to other negative reviews. The sarcasm and lack of professionalism in it speaks volumes about both him and his business. The fact is, we do not know if Molly's tumor is malignant or benign. The tests that were run on it previously were inconclusive. It has never affected her well-being, behavior, or anything else, so we had no reason to believe it would be a problem, and because we don't know what it is, we didn't feel it needed to be disclosed. She has no symptoms of a chronic disease and we're still not sure if there's anything wrong with her that would have caused that. We didn't say she HAS cancer; we said we knew about the tumor and that it MIGHT BE that. In hindsight, we should have not have taken advantage of the play time that was offered. It was clearly too much for her. But it's also clear that she suffered from a lack of observation while at Markim, period. We do appreciate the care that Molly got after returning from Markim and that they apparently helped her in ways that are atypical for them. The owners can blame us all they want for what happened, but the fact remains that they didn't even come out to speak to us or call us after a dog that was under their care almost died, and also tried to charge us for the whole stay. That says more than anything else. read more

I took my dog here for three nights last week. When I went to pick him up there was a sign that said "warning: kennel cough outbreak". This did not make me feel that the facility was clean and well kept, and it also bothered me that they didn't notify me about this. But, the damage was already done so I left and didn't think much of it. Then, about two days after his visit I noticed that my dog was very sick and had completely liquid stools. Long story short he contracted two serious parasites and the vet said that it was "extremely likely" that he got them from his stay at the markim pet resort. Now he has given these parasites to my other dog and I now am spending hundreds of dollars to treat them both and they both are very very sick. I WILL NEVER COME BACK HERE--- be warned this place is not clean UPDATE: Nearly two months later and my poor dog is still sick....i've now spent close to $400 on vet visits and meds. UPDATE #2: I would like to respond to the owner comments below. First, regarding your snide remark that you "wish I could have spoken to you directly" ---well the first thing I did was call you to speak to a manager. The person I spoke with basically said, "sorry there is nothing we can do". And I do feel that it is my duty to warn other customers about this so that they can make an informed decision. And secondly, you speak so highly of how clean this facility is, yet when I came to pick up my dog (as noted in the review) there was a sign posted that said there was a kennel cough outbreak in the facility. I'm sorry, but in my book that does not make this a sanitary environment. read more

While I think some people/dogs will like this place but it's certainly not for all. To start with, my dog's personality is very mellow and submissive. We thought this place will be a good fit for her. The place felt pretentious. The staffs think the dogs they board are better than others, while some staffs are dishonest. Dropped my 2 yr old trained German Shepherd first day for initial evaluation, got a phone call around lunch saying my dog bit a staff while the staff is trying to take a ball away from her. Good lord, has anyone tried to take a bone or ball from your dog before? If I take your wallet by force, tell me you are not going to punch me to get it back? It says how unprofessional these staffs are. They didn't ask me if my dog knows any commands which my dog knows perfectly how to drop a ball. Second, you don't take a ball/bone from a dog by force, that just shows you don't understand how to interact with a dog. Again, they charged me full day price anyways. And some staffs are just simply being dishonest. I brought a bag of food for my dog and asked the staffs to feed her late afternoon. After being notified to pick up my dog at lunch time, I also asked about the dog food, the staff simply said "she already ate it". Very convenient. My dog eats no more than two meals a day and she had her first meal right before the initial evaluation. Overall, while the venue is nice but I don't think all staffs are professionals. I used to love this place. I used to refer people to it all the time. We used to take our dog there every summer for two weeks, and for shorter visits during the year. I took her to two different training camps there. I don't regret any of the time spent there, but... I won't take her back. We got back from our two week trip late, so I picked up my dog the next day. It's kind of a schlep from our house--about a half hour drive. I paid the bill and came home. When I came home I realized I had used the wrong card--debit, when I should have used the credit card. That's obviously my own fault, so I will make the story very short. I called and the person at the desk "reversed" the first transaction and let me pay by credit card over the phone. Only the charge did NOT reverse (it had already come out), it was only taken out of the register. Which means the "drawer" was not over at the end of the day. Long story short, I paid my $600 bill twice and the owner would do Nothing to rectify it. Nor did he apologize. I have spent Thousands of dollars at this place. They know my dog by name and my dog loves going there. And the initial mistake was mine, admittedly. But I won't take her back there. And I won't refer any more friends. read more

Do not take you pets here! To say these people half ass their job would be giving them to much ass! They do not do what they say they are going to do so be careful what you pay for. There isn't much "play time" involved with play time. As far as I can tell what you are paying for is your dog to be caged for however long you are gone, a little bit of food and water you pay for and a bath. Well, my dog was a jerk and bit another dog and got kicked out of camp. While I am super bummed that she can't go back to camp, I think it is a great rule. You can rest assured that bad dogs are not welcome at camp. My grouchy girl was having a rough day I guess. After 6 months of good behavior, a labradoodle pushed her over the edge... hey, we all have those days. She really misses camp and it breaks my heart that she can't go back, but them's the breaks. After a couple of negative experiences at Snug Pet resort, we were referred here by an acquaintance, and have never looked back. Everything about this place is 5-star. We were given a tour our first visit and saw the facilities, which are clean and spacious. The staff was helpful and friendly. Our two huskies are in good hands when we board them at least twice a year, sometimes for 7-10 days. I felt good about Markim, but what really made me realize how attentive the staff was was when I got a call while on vacation to let me know that one of my "kids" had a slight limp (a recurring injury) and that they were going to pull him from Big Buddy Play. I appreciated being kept in the loop and knew that they were paying attention. My only wish is that they have some sort of "buy 10 get 1 free" deal (only semi-joking). With two dogs, it adds up fast, but the peace of mind we have and the stellar treatment the pups get is worth it. read more

We were a bit nervous at first when we chose a place for Finnegan to stay in the San Diego area. There were two reasons, one, he had never been boarded before and two, we are not from the area. I only wish I could have been, as a human, so pampered. The place is very accommodating and lovely. As a first time guest Finnegan was able to have two play times without extra fees. I would not hesitate to have him visit here again. read more

My praise for Markim is long overdue! I now have my third dog that enjoys the day camp, baths and recently her first boarding experience. The property is beautiful, prices are reasonable (I buy a 10-visit punchcard for camp) and the staff is super caring and knowledgeable. My two rescue dogs love it there and both had unique anxiety issues. Can't say enough about them! read more

I have been taking my dogs to Markim for 14 years. Once a week to camp run a muck and baths after playing all day. While our house was under remodel we had to board them there for 4 months. They absolutely love it there! All i have to do is say the word " camp" and they run to the car. What makes it extra special is the manager, Betsy! Betsy is so wonderful and inviting and knows what she's doing. She's hands on with the dogs and always keeps me informed of anything she sees might be an illness or an " owie." i know when. I am out of town my dogs are loved and well taken care of! Markim truly is home away from home for my 3 dogs . read more
