I have had multiple pieces repaired, restored, and custom-created by Kate over the years, and I trust her and her team with all of my jewelry needs. Recently, I inherited a pendant that Kate originally designed and made for my mother 18 years ago. After my mom passed away last year, the piece became even more meaningful to me. Kate thoughtfully transformed the pendant into a bracelet, and I picked it up the other day--it turned out absolutely beautiful. On Thursday, June19Th, 2025 I took a trip with my young son to this store to have "permanent" bracelets put on the two of us. It was a big, huge deal for my 10 year old son, as he had been waiting for this day for a bit. He insisted to get them done this specific day. Drove from Branford to Shelton just for to get the bracelets done. While there the experience was pleasant and the young lady who did them for us was very nice. Each bracelet was 65.00 plus tax. Fast foward to Tuesday morning the following week - Tuesday, June 24th. On my way out the door to go to work my son calls me to have the bracelets "kiss" - a little game the two of us started as soon as we got the bracelets. My bracelet was nowhere to be found. long story short - i looked for it everywhere and did not find it. I reached out to the store by phone and i was basically dismissed and when i asked for some kind of policy on replacing it or any thing to fix the problem - I was told NO. I mentioned to the person on the other end that this was $70 that i wanted in less than a week and was told - " yeah, i understand but we cant do anything unless you find the bracelet" Explained to them that if it was done right it wouldn't have gotten caught in anything and i wouldn't have lost it. Following day i received a text message from somebody at the company asking me in regards to how my experience was. I explained to her what had happened and was told that my problem was going to be shared with the team and i would "hear from someone during the next business day to discuss this further". Surprise, surprise ....no one called and a week later i reached out to them once again. as of right now - July 2nd, 2025 all i got is that they are very sorry for not being able to give me a specific timeframe during which i should receive a resolution to my issue as they don't have direct access to updates, but sure my request was marked urgent with "my" team ( i was told the same thing a week ago, so obviously "urgent" doesn't really mean anything). Also, that i will be informed as soon as the person who texted me hears anything. I am deeply disappointed by the lack of urgency and responsiveness from this store when it came to handling this matter. read more

We got wedding bands from here and the staff was very helpful and patient to help us find what we were looking for. However, I'm knocking stars off because of the pickup process. We put a deposit down on the rings with the balance to be paid upon pickup (only because they had this as an option). When I went to pick up our rings, the associate confidently told me the wrong balance (over $500 more than what my receipt had indicated). I politely asked that they recheck their records. Another associate had gotten involved and tried to tell me what each ring cost, to which I still had to correct her with the prices on my copy of the receipt. She claimed that "their whole system had gone down and [she] had to manually fix everything." Conveniently, everything was "fixed" in their favor. The other kicker was that they wanted to charge a fee to resize my ring (even though my fiancé and I both ordered custom sizes, I wear a small ring size and he ordered to the quarter size for a better fit). I don't see what the point of ordering a particular size ring just for them to charge the resizing fee that "they had to do". I am 100% confident they did nothing and there was no communication of a resizing fee when ordering. Bad business practice and the associate who we worked with to order couldn't even look at me when I was going back and forth on the balance due. I love the rings we got, but would just strongly recommend buyers to be vigilant on the charges. They also signed my phone number up for promotional calls which I know I did not sign up for. I brought in numerous (30+) pieces of jewelry to be evaluated for sale, repair and cleaning. Marks of Design did not return a 24" gold chain attached to a locket that they kept for cleaning along with a pair of pearl and gold earrings. When I came to pick up my cleaned items the following week there were quite a few boxes and bags, and due to my level of trust I did not inspect every single package until after I got home and opened everything up over the weekend comparing to the photos that I took at drop off. I sent an email, and then called the following week (they are closed on Sundays & Mondays). Once notified they gave me the runaround, and owner Kate Marks did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation after her employee Gabriella lied to her about the situation, (Kate informed me that they only clean jewelry while a client waits - not true obviously!) and Kate adamantly refused my request to have a meeting with all involved to review story discrepancies and circumstances which led me to file a police report. Oh, and of course the cameras just happened to be broken! They also kept the gold pieces left over from jewelry that I had reworked and did not return the pieces until I asked for them. My experience overall with this business has been very traumatic, especially because I foolishly trusted them at their word and did not inspect everything at the store before I left, not that it would have made a difference - I was truly shocked at how poorly Kate handled the situation as I was trying to rectify the situation in a peaceful manner. read more

Took Advantage of a US Army Soldier. I hate to say it, but I truly believe that this store took advantage of my fiance and his short timeline. While on the short holiday break allotted to soldiers during basic training, my fiance bought a ring from this jewelry store on 12/24/2017. On 12/26/2017, he proposed and I said yes (!!!). Unfortunately, I didn't love the ring and so we both agreed that we'd go and select another ring together. Upon going back to the jewelry store on 12/27/2017, the employees refused to allow us to return the ring. They claimed that it was a custom job, despite the fact that the only change they made was replacing the cubic zirconia stone in the band with a real diamond. Ultimately, after a lot of back and forth (and a couple of visits), they told us that they'd do us a favor and let us choose another ring within 10 days from their store AND we'd only get a portion of the original purchase credited to the new ring. Not only were we short on time (we had to get him back to Fort Benning only a few days later for the rest of basic training), but we also didn't see any rings that we loved in the store and felt as if we were being pressured to make a decision. We left the store hoping that we'd be able to recoup more of the purchase price by selling the ring online. I know my fiance should have put more thought and planning into this purchase with his short timeline, but we really didn't expect to be denied a return on such an expensive items, especially only 3 days after the purchase date. Since he is from Shelton, he really wanted to support the local business, but unfortunately, it didn't go as planned While he is back at Fort Benning and I am on a mission to sell this ring, I have being doing some research. After visiting a few other jewelry stores (large stores, as well as family owned), I have heard from multiple people that we were treated unfairly and unprofessionally in this situation. I am never the type to leave negative reviews, but after hearing so many people validate my frustration, I feel like it is only right that I shed light on this situation. I won't tell anyone to never go to this store, but I would advise that you proceed with caution in regards to the return policy and really make sure you know what you're getting into. read more

I recently visited this store for the first time. Wow it is beautiful! Purple is my favorite color and this store is full of purple! I came by to have the battery in my Bulova watch changed and to drop off my wedding band and engagement rings to be replated. The watch was repaired in about 10 minutes and they had to send the rings out for replating. I browsed their jewelry while I waited and what gorgeous engagement rings they had. Made me want to get married again! The staff was kind and welcoming. My rings came back in about a week and I have never seen them so clean and sparkling! Thank you Marks of Design! read more

I went in not sure if I wanted to get my engagement and wedding band sized or re-set. They worked with me to see what styles I liked and gave me a quote for both sizing and a new setting, with no pressure at all to push me towards the more expensive option. I chose to go with one new setting (I prefer to just wear one ring, so having them set together was ideal) and just got my ring back today. I love it! It's amazing how simple the rings looked on their own and how different it looks now. Everyone at the store was extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely go back. read more

Had an extremely Bad experience with the owner. I brought in a New ring I wanted to sell, plus some other jewelry to sell. When I went back to retrieve the gem stones, she was trying to give me someone else's stones. She was confused? Went back again to get back the new ring and stones. She stated that I SOLD her the new ring, which I did not! Again she did not have my correct gem stones. Should have called the police! Do not trust this owner or her methods. read more

I bought my wife's original wedding set from Zales and in 2015 had the center marquise upgraded to a certified larger marquise and placed in a new prong head that accommodated the larger diamond. Recently the whole prong head and diamond came completely off the ring and we weren't able to find it. Even though we have had the ring cleaned and serviced, we did not have our sheet signed by the store so this was Zales' way of not covering the poor craftsmanship that led to the whole prong with new diamond falling out. I will not buy anything else from Zales. Fortunately, I met Kate through my college student's friend at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. From introduction through the delivery of my wife's renewed wedding band, Kate was the true professional in customer service and her resident knowledge comforted us that we had made the right choice by having her personally select the replacement marquise from Antwerp and setting it in my wife's band. When my wife received her ring back, she was completely speechless and of course tears in the eyes. Not only was the ring beautifully recrafted but the delivery presentation was out of this world. Over the top, beautiful card, diamond shaped chocolates, and kind words. Now that is how you conduct a reputable business. This type of service is truly missed over the years. Had my wedding ring re-set there a some years ago - very poor quality work. The prongs and base of the ring were re-worked and the finish was so awful. There were lines and ridges that almost looked gauged. I was bit taken aback when it was handed to me and then when i mentioned my unhappiness with the work, they took the ring back, went and did some more "work" on it and handed to back to me, not looking any better. Took it to another jeweler in town and they did an amazing job. Fixing the mess that Marks of Design did. The other jeweler that did a GREAT job is in Shelton Square. read more
