For years I have been meaning to try this place and today I finally did. Let me start off by stating that I have had some of the best BBQ in the country from the Carolina's, Texas, KC an many others so I know good BBQ when I have it. My wife and I ordered the pork rib meal and a pulled pork sandwich with macaroni and coleslaw, the meal came with a salad and garlic bread, we also ordered a drink. It all came out to about $23 which to me seemed reasonable (before we got our food). The portion size of the pulled pork sand. was rediculous!!! I am not by any means a big guy or someone needs huge portions to be satisfied. The roll it came on dwarfed the amount of pork I was served. It also was soggy! I asked if this was the regular portion thinking it was a mistake and was told it was correct. The ribs my wife got had good smoke flavor but the meat was dry :( the coleslaw looked like it was old and it had no flavor, it was watery. The macaroni and cheese was par and the garlic bread was cold and gross. I will say the green salad was good though ! All in all the experience was sub-par and really didn't spark any interest of me returning. Save your money!!! read more

Maybe it was the day I came in to this joint but the food was a let down. I ordered the Tri Tip sandwich and was not impressed at all. The bread for one was over cooked ( damn near rock hard ) the meat was ok but no where near as good as say Green Acres in Simi Valley. I will say all I tried so far was that and nothing else so another trip to this spot will be on the agenda. One thing I will say is the staff is very friendly and the service is great. So I was having a bunch of car work done near by and walked over to this place. Heard it was the best BBQ in Ventura. So let me say the food was good, not the best beef I've ever had, but good. The price and service were a joke! I waited way too long for my food... like 30 minutes. I got these 3 little pieces of steak, I think it was tri-tip(which I love,) It cost me over $20 for 3 little pieces of steak a cup of water and some bread, which I didn't eat. It wasn't like it was a fancy restaurant with great service and lots of free stuff either. Not the place for me and way overpriced. read more

The food there was very reasonable for a BBQ joint. The place is quaint in the middle of an industrial complex with lots of Big Rigs lined up on a Sunday. The take home trays smelled like recycled cardboard. To me they smelled like dry dog food. But the meats we bought were well made and spiced too. -1 Star- this second part of my review is regarding the 40yr old Rude female Employee behind the counter. She seemed to have a problem with a bi-racial couple being together Female Hispanic/Male -Caucasian. She kept asking if we were doing business-meaning I was a bought woman. . Didnt answer her stupid question, but she asked about 4 times in a row, that even her co-workers stared at her. She needs to learn some Customer Service etiquette. read more

We read reviews on Yelp and several other places, all of which highly recommend this restaurant. I can only conclude these people have never eaten truly good BBQ before. If the meat REQUIRES sauce, the BBQ sucks. It's that simple. We both ordered the Tri-Tip dinner, since Tri-Tip isn't something we get in Phoenix, but which I fondly remember my dad grilling when I was growing up in Ventura. It was about 6:30pm on Friday, October 24. The staff was relatively pleasant, but the food was completely underwhelming. The meat was barely warm, the Mac and Cheese was hot, but tasteless, and the coleslaw was a watery mess. My wife's sweet potato casserole was good. The tri-tip really had little flavor and was on the dry side, so it really needed some of the sauce to help it out. I don't know what sauce they're using, but it's ok, with a hint of spicyness accompanying the tomato-heavy flavor, however it's nothing to write home about. Note that they have a sit down area, but most orders I saw people come in for were take out. For the price ($15 for 7 slices of tri-tip and bread, and the two sides) I expected much better, even for a checkered-plastic tablecloth restaurant. The BBQ chicken sandwich is my favorite. The hot BBQ sauce is not too spicy, but not too mild. It's just right.

I had really high hopes for this place, since it looked legit and good bbq is hard to find in these parts. Unfortunately, the food was less than savory. We kept passing this place on the 101 in Ventura so I decided to give it a try. We were surprised by the nice dining room (though all the tables needed cleaning). I ordered a pork rib dinner. It was pretty blah. The meat didn't seem to have a lot of flavor and the sauce was pretty watery. They don't put any sauce on the ribs allowing you to pick from the two kinds on the table, I didn't think either was as good as what you can get at a supermarket. For sides I had the macaroni salad, which I thought was much too vinergary. The baked beans were pretty good - actual baked beans instead of the ranch beans most places serve. I thought it was OK, but I think there are better places to go for BBQ and don't plan to return. read more

I see this place everyday since I work very close by. I had very high expectation since they have a huge smoker in front parking lot. Walked in, line was short. Cashier was very nice and helpful with the menu since this was my first time. Tables were clean, staff very very nice. I recieved my baby back ribs, presentation was great!! Tried the tri-tip sandwich meal with chili beans. Their service could not have been any better. As soon as I ordered I got my food right away. From the garlic bread to the tri-tip combined with the chili beans, it was all very good. It is definitely my new #1 bbq spot. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a bbq place. read more

Marshall's has an unassuming giant chicken marking its somewhat nontraditional location in an industrial area of Ventura paralleling the interstate. Upon entry, we quickly found the menu, and our order was taken. I ordered the brisket and ribs plate, figuring that I wouldn't often be in the area and had to try more than just one meat. It came with two sides (mac and cheese, and cole slaw), garlic bread, and a side salad. It was $17-18. The salad was mostly lettuce with a few shreds of carrots and cucumber slices. A nice inclusion in an otherwise heavy meal. The brisket was fantastic, not needing bbq sauce. It was tender and flavorful on its own. The ribs were tender and meaty, coming off the bone easily. The bbq sauce was solid, providing a nice addition to both the brisket and ribs. The mac and cheese was good, creamy and flavorful, though lacking salt and pepper. Adding both enhanced it to something I'd order again and again. The coleslaw was on the sweet side, and also needed some salt and pepper, in my opinion. The garlic bread was a nice addition, not overly garlicly, toasted on the grill it seemed from appearance and taste. I will definitely try to return if I'm ever in the area again on travel. read more

Well done Marshall's Bodacious BBQ! I've been told of the great bbq there for many years but have never stopped in. Today when ordering and picking up a work team lunch (Marshall's upon request) I am happy to have had my first Bodacious BBQ experience. This was a pick up to bring back to the office for 10 people. They have super easy online ordering and everything was ready to go on time, complete, packed well, and with everything we'd need to enjoy. The food is excellent. Pork tri tip, ribs, sausage, garlic bread and all sides kick ass. Marshall's BBQ sauces are the best. Portions are sufficient. This little place is in an automotive business park in Montalvo, which is a little odd, so if your looking for a trendy place this isn't it, but the BBQ is what really matters, and Bodacious delivers the goods. read more

They were so accommodating and the display was fabulous. The prices were totally affordable. The food is delicious, all of it. Was introduced to this place by a co worker a few years ago. Food was great and when you ordered the beef rib you would get two good sized ribs for $2.50. Fast forward to now. I work out of Santa Barbara now and travel to the area every Wednesday. I would ask for the al a cart rib and get two, even three once, I know that was a fluke so I dropped in a tip. The last two times I've been there I was given only one sparsely meated rib for $3.50. I spoke to Kendall about it and she explained that they were now being consistent with serving amounts. I don't mind paying $3.50 for two good sized ribs but not for one meager one. I'm not a cheapskate, I just want a fair meal for a fair price. I guess I got spoiled with two ribs for $3.50. I don't plan on going back anytime soon. The cost to portion value doesn't seem reasonable. In my opinion I think $4.00 for two good sized ribs would be a hit and I bet the ribs would be flying out the door. I hope they consider pricing the ribs differently. $2.00 per ribs is where I would place the cost per rib. read more

Marshalls is actually pretty good for a grilled tri-tip sandwich, the bread is really good. The BBQ sauce are okay, nothing to really rave about. but I only have had the Tri-tip sandwich, so I can't really lay down a hard critic off a sandwich. read more

Stopped by here after visiting relatives, following a recommendation from "the locals" and I can see why it is their favorite bbq joint in town. Ginormous portions, I had their pulled pork - it was very tasty and tender; one of my nephews had their sausage and he raved about that. Always consistent, a true BBQ joint, in my mind king of Ventura BBQ's. I've been hanging out in Ventura this summer and come here at least once a week (for the last 4 weeks). I would stick with my tri-tip lunch special, a great value and adequate. Yesterday I tried the tri-tip dinner and it's just a little more meat, 2 sides, small garlic bread pieces, and a salad. in my opinion, skip this and all the carbs from the sides. Not a value and not worth it as opposed to the sandwich and drink and one side special. Dickie's is OK (local competition) but Marshall's is the best in my book. read more

Came by this weekend after we found out Just BBQ was out of ribs, so we gave this place a try as we had heard it was worth a shot. We arrived 5 minutes before closing and damn was the Tri-Tip and Dibs on point. The service was great and very well priced. Came back today for lunch and once again, it was damn good... I just wanted to add... where else can you go and watch them cook your BBQ over an open flame and not in the back room where they're probably cooking over a stove top.
