Ask the Community - Marshall's Jewelers

Do they do ring resizing while you wait?

Hi Jennifer, Richard from Marshalls here. I have a saying this for many years....No good jewelry repair is done while you wait... To do the job "right" the item needs to be…

    Do they replace watch batteries?

Update, May 2025. We no longer change watch batteries. Thank you

I had gone iin and had a watch battery replaced. All went will until about 2 - 3 weeks later the watch stopped. I thought maybe it was a bad battery so i brought it back. Joseph said he could put in another battery but it may be something more wrong with the watch. I did not know what to do since he was indicating that i would have to pay for another battery. And then he kept pressing about the watch probably needing a repair so another battery would just be a waste. I did not want to pay for another battery to see if it worked. He never said he would replace it for free and we would see what happens. So I left very disappointed and thinking that i didn't really want to pay for a diagnosis and repair. I really liked the watch so i decided to bring it somewhere else and get a new battery and see what happened. Well it has been a few months now and the watch is working fine. So it really was a bad battery that Joseph put in. It was poor customer service for him to not offer to replace it for free. That should have been the first step. After going there for years I probably wont be back.

They were kind and clearly wanted to make our experience personal and welcoming. We walked away extremely happy with our purchase and through the years, I barely go a week without someone commenting on how beautiful and unique my ring is. Though we moved away from Boston, we still have purchased jewelry from them remotely because we want to support their amazing business. If you're looking for reasonable prices but no hassle and a wonderful experience, I encourage you to visit Persona before anywhere else. They're the best of the best.

Gary inspected the ring in great detail and made a recommendation to remove some of the shank and rebuild it, as well as to place tension springs to prevent spinning and slipping. He took his time to measure my finger for the optimal fit. I was told by another jeweler that all of my prongs needed replacement and I wanted a second opinion. Gary again took his time to inspect all the prongs and reassured me that they didn't need replacement. I was very glad for his honesty. The next business day, Gary fixed the ring in 3-4 hours and it came out beautifully. I was so nervous previously to entrust someone with my ring, but I felt at ease. Gary offered that I stay and watch the entire process. He told me to inspect my gemstone carefully after his job was complete as general good practice after having my jewelry worked on! I am so happy with the end result and strongly recommend this jeweler. The key factors that impressed me most were honesty, trustworthiness, attention to detail, patience, mastery of his craft, and sharing of knowledge/providing an understandable rationale for his decision-making. I will absolutely be returning for intermittent ring checks!

I let him know what the initial quote was he said "she was wrong and I'll fire her". I said, I don't want that but let me tell you what the plan was (as I wanted to switch my current thicker yellow gold for a smaller white gold), he said wouldn't let me speak and instead said "take it somewhere else, we're not the jeweler for you". I at no point raised my voice and again, asked please let me explain what the plan was. He had no interest in listening to me and was extremely dismissive. Poor customer service

As I'm reading over the reviews posted by others on this site, I find myself rolling my eyes,…read morewondering what store they're talking about (and whether any of them have even the slightest idea of either the differences between fine quality and junk jewelry, or what's involved in creating the jewelry that they see in showrooms or wear on their bodies), because as a formally trained and certified silversmith (a long time ago, in a former career) I actually happen to know both, having not only designed, hand fabricated and sold fine jewelry before, but actually competed and won an award for it at the national level, 30+ years ago. From that perspective, what I can tell you without hesitation is that the jewelers and sales staff at Vallee's Jewelers not only DO know very well what they're doing' but they know it a whole lot better than many of their competitors do. (In fact, their in-house bench jeweler/goldsmith is a 3rd generation Master Jeweler and certified Master Watchmaker with more than 50 years of hands-on experience in the trade, which is an incredible rarity, nowadays!) Not only that, but the store's sales professionals are also top notch, with decades of experience under their belts, as well. What most people don't understand is that better than 80% of the jewelry they see in stores and online is made in low rent sweatshops, where the focus is on cranking out volume at the lowest possibly price, rather than painstakingly crafting pieces of wearable art that are made to be worn and enjoyed for generations The difference between the two are not only in durability and in price, but also in the amount of a Master Craftsman's time required to make it happen. The same is true of repairs: in order to give an accurate price quote for the repair of anything more complicated than a ring re-sizing (especially if it's on a piece that was made in a foreign sweatshop), it's sometimes necessary to first spend some time double-checking that the piece is solid, rather than made from hollow tubing (as is sometimes the case). Since broken pieces of solid metal can easily be welded or brazed (soldered) back together again, but hollow pieces cannot, what happens to a craftsman's reputation in the eyes of a customer, if he promises to do something for a reasonable price and then discovers that he cannot? As for interpersonal treatment, I have been in their store several times (including right before closing time on the Friday night of a holiday weekend, when everyone was in a rush to put the long week behind them and get home to the ones they love), and even then, I was greeted warmly and treated well by everyone I met. Needless to say, I am and will most likely continue to be a fan of theirs. 5 out of 5 stars!
