When searching for a bridal salon that wasn't a chain, I came across local business Martellen's. (And later I found out that at least 3 of my friends bought their dresses from here too!) Upon scheduling the first appointment, I was treated like royalty. My first appointment, I had no idea what kind of dress I wanted. The staff was very patient with me. I couldn't pull the trigger right away, so my bridal party and mom went to lunch and came back so I could commit to the dress. Keep in mind, yes, you need an appointment to try on dresses. As they were with other customers, we killed time walking around before heading back to the shop. I went in around Labor Day, and my dress originally came in store in December. As my wedding was not until August, I was happy about this. I had 2 appointments for fittings. I was happy that they offered evening appointments for this so I didn't have to miss work. The saleswomen were gossiping the whole time and our bride was ready multiple times with the consultant nowhere in sight. No, she was not looking for a new dress. I visited Martellen's yesterday to find my wedding dress and I was pretty nervous. It was the 4th store I had been to and my last appointment didn't go so well. I knew I liked a few different styles and I've had trouble finding "the dress." I'd almost given up and I worried that it was me that was the problem, and I wouldn't have that "moment" when I just knew. I arrived for my appointment with my mom, sister, and niece. We were placed in a small area with mirrors and seats. The store itself was very open and airy. The owner, Mary Ellen, was very nice and we visited with her for a few minutes. There was one specific dress I was looking for but unfortunately, they no longer had the dress. When I originally called looking for dresses in March, I had made my appointment for April. Because of Covid, that appointment was pushed to May, and then again to June. They were very apologetic, but I understood completely. My attendant was Melissa, and she was great! I had a "dress guide" with specific styles/dresses I liked and what I wasn't looking for. I showed Melissa some of my favorites and described what I was looking for. I let her know there were two styles I really liked and I wasn't sure what I wanted to go with. So, we walked around the store as she pulled similar dresses. Although there were a few I said no to right away, Melissa definitely got the look I was going for. As we searched, there were a few I saw that I really liked, but they were over budget or a different style. Melissa would let me know that instead of pulling them anyway, which I appreciated! I felt very comfortable while I was there and I had my fingers crossed I would find the one. Toward the end of my appointment, I had 3-4 favorites that I tried on again. As I put the first one on, I knew it was the one. My eyes started watering a bit and I walked out saying, "I think this is the one!" My family was excited and they loved the dress as well. Just to be sure, I tried on the other favorites again. My dress was very similar to another one, but the third was pretty different. I wasn't worried about making the right decision at all. I knew my dress was the one. I put it on for a third time and we looked at some veils and different headpieces. Then, Melissa asked if I said yes to the dress, which of course I did! My dress was under budget (yay!) and I put 60% down. It should be here in about 6 months, which is pretty standard. Overall, my experience at Martellen's was absolutely amazing. After the last appointment I had, I was afraid I was too picky or indecisive. But after working with Melissa and finding my dress, I'm so happy. Thank you Melissa and Mary Ellen! I felt like a bride and I'm so excited to get married next year! I can't stop looking at the pictures of my dress. It's going to be so hard to keep this dress a secret :) read more

I can't say enough about how special Martellen's owner and staff made my shopping and alterations experience. The store is a must-visit for brides shopping in the Chicago suburbs. As an out-of-state bride, I made appointments at three stores shortly after Christmas with my mom and other family members. Martellen's was the last stop that day, but I had a feeling it would be my favorite. The store is cozy, so be aware of that if you have a large group. Bonnie took me to choose gowns in the back room, which was great. But (thankfully) she pulled what wound up being my dress. I didn't feel pressure at all from Bonnie that day, but knew it was the one and another consultant helped take my measurements and placed my order that day. Since I lived out of state, store owner Mary Ellen worked with my mom to pull several veils to try on at my first dress fitting. They all worked with the dress, and I had no problem picking a fingertip veil with lace detail. It was just as affordable as the online options I had considered. I had two fittings with Violet in the store's alterations department. She created a beautiful bustle for the long, lace-edged train. It was complicated and took time to do on the wedding day, but the bustle stayed secure for hours of dancing at the reception. She also took in the strapless dress under my arms to make it fit perfectly. read more

This is a fantastic bridal shop. They are nothing but open and honest and truly want what's best for the bride. When they didn't have the dress I thought I wanted close to my size it was hard to tell if I'd actually like it. They called around to other shops and encouraged me to find a place where I could find it. They were able to ship the dress in for me in a closer size to try on before making a decision. They've been super flexible with me and honest. The owner and one of employees both helped me through the process and were so kind and never pushy which I appreciated. I found my Sottero & Midgley dress at Martellen's and love it so much. The boutique has a great selection of beautiful gowns, and it also has a very nice selection of mother of the bride/groom gowns. My mom found her dress there, and it is beautiful. When I first when and tried on wedding dresses, the ladies at Martellen's were very helpful and helped me select several beautiful gowns for me to try on. They did not pressure me into purchasing a gown in any way, and they also helped me find a beautiful veil that matches my dress perfectly. I went to many boutiques and stores and I tried on many many dresses. When I walked into Martellen's I loved the boutique immediately! All of the ladies were so sweet, helpful and honest. I got the pleasure to have Melissa work with me and help me find my gown! Melissa was awesome! It was like having another girlfriend there with me! I was not having much luck initially at other boutiques, but when I met Melissa I knew I was going to find the dress I never wanted to take off! Once I put it on I knew I had found it! I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Martellens. It was the first place I looked for dresses back in November. I had a few pictures on my phone of dresses I liked, and had a relatively low price point that I knew I wanted to stick to. Mary Ellen was incredibly knowledgable and helpful when showing me dresses based on those pictures, and I ended up finding my dress on my first visit. She didn't show me any dresses over my budget, showed me several highly-discounted dresses, etc. It was really wonderful service, and the store is very cute. I was there twice and neither time was it crowded. Fast-forward a few months to COVID! Mary Ellen was quick to communicate with me about shipping times for my dress (delivered on time), and scheduling a fitting. Mary Ellen and an in-house seamstress were able to schedule my fittings to happen in a single week while I was in town (COVID changed my summer plans keeping me out of town for all but one week), and the seamstress actually worked on my dress after I tried it on the first time, adjusting it while I was there so that I could take the dress home with me that day! They were also very fastidious about COVID precautions (hand sanitizer upon entering, everyone wearing masks) which I appreciated. I completely recommend Martellen's to any bride-to-be. The women there are kind and helpful, and they have so many great options in dresses. read more

This bridal salon is wonderful! They have an incredibly large selection of wedding dresses. Personally, I know three brides, including my daughter, who bought their dress here. Each bride had very different taste yet each of their dresses was truly perfect for them. The staff is very attentive and excited for the bride and her shopping guests, but not over bearing or pushy. Our sales professional listened to my daughter and brought out a selection of dresses based on their email and conversation which perfectly met her wishes for her dress. Martellen's met all of the dates for dress arrival and alterations. The alterations seamstress is excellent as well. I highly recommend Martellen's for a beautiful dress and experience. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Purchasing a wedding dress from Martellen's was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. I purchased a dress in January after trying on the sample size in store which fit like a glove. I proceeded to order the dress in the exact same size. When it arrived in April it did not fit the same as the sample in store and appeared to be 1-2 sizes larger despite no changes to my body. I went for my 1st fitting in June with Ruby. When I told her that the armpits were pinned too tight she dismissed me. I then proceeded to tell Bonnie that it was not pinned properly to my body. Bonnie had Ruby return, Ruby continued to dismiss my concerns and made negative comments about my body (I'm too tall, my breasts too small). Bonnie reassured me that the arms wouldn't actually be that tight and if they were it was an easy fix. When I returned in July for my 2nd fitting my alterations were incomplete. The bustle was incorrect. There were pins in the hips, it had not been taken in. I could barely fit my arms through the holes because the shoulders were unnecessarily brought up (I was told they were cut). The cups were not properly sewn in - they were lopsided and rippling. The straps came off my shoulders and the waist hit in the wrong spot. The clasp in the back was in the wrong spot and created a gaping hole. I refused to see Ruby and was brought a new seamstress, Gina. Gina admitted that the bust had been done all wrong and ripped out the cups. She quickly stitched the hips in so I could see what it was supposed to look like. I left the fitting sobbing with minimal reassurance from the staff. Two weeks later in early August, I came for the 3rd fitting. Gina was able to let out the shoulders a small amount so that I could fit my arms through the holes. She fixed the clasp in the back, but the fabric continued to bunch and ripple throughout the back and bust. She re-pinned the bust. A week later (2 weeks before my wedding) I returned. The dress and veil were supposed to be steamed and ready to go... they were not. At this fitting I put the dress on 3 different times for Gina to make alterations. It was too tight in the arms and gaping in the chest. Gina brought Mary Ellen in. After insisting that this is not how the dress was supposed to fit, Mary Ellen fetched the sample dress that I tried on in January. Once she and Gina saw how that was supposed to fit they deemed my dress to be irreversibly damaged. At that point, Gina stated that the bust had been done wrong and admitted to all of Ruby's faults. Mary Ellen said that this dress had been "difficult to alter" and that they "would stop carrying it". She then decided to take in the sides of the bust and hips in the sample; would clean it, and give it to be at a 50% discount. 48 hours later I receive a call from Mary Ellen saying that Gina was wrong - Ruby had not cut the straps on the dress. She decided to go back on her word and wanted to "try again" to alter the dress she had previously referred to as "irreversibly damaged". I do not understand why the two seamstresses were allowed to go almost 3 months without speaking about the problems with this dress. After refusing to have another failed alteration I insisted they attempt to fit the sample dress. Another 48 hrs pass (we are now ONE week from my wedding) and I again return to Martellen's to try on the altered sample dress. I was given a refund for the alterations and for 50% of the dress. The dress still did not fit properly and gapped at the chest when I sat. I was told to use double sided tape to keep it in place... The worst part of it all was that Mary Ellen continued to imply that this was somehow MY fault. At this point, I decided I never wanted to return to this horrible place, and left the store with my partial refund and a poorly altered discount dress. I do not think anyone at Martellen's appreciates the emotional trauma this caused; in addition the time and money I spent driving from Chicago to Lemont. That night I ordered a dress online from BHLDN, had it express delivered and wore that instead. I cannot recommend BHLDN enough to any bride in a desperate situation such as this. They allowed me to ordered multiple sizes and return free of charge. read more

Everyone is so wonderful and encouraging at Martellen's. I first visited in September and worked with Taja. I had a good idea about the dress I wanted, came to Martellen's to try on a smaller sample size to confirm that it was 'the dress', and knew immediately that this would be the store I buy from. At the other salon I had visited, they told me I needed a 10 and $400+ in alterations. They strongly encouraged me to add belts and other bling to the dress. I was pretty clear that I was looking for something simple and classic with a good fit. At Martellen's, they had the same measurements and told me I was a perfect fit in an 8. I trusted their judgment and here I am 2 months before my wedding with a dress that still fits like a dream -- in a 8 -- and only $150 in alterations to prepare the bustle. They never tried to upsell me on accessories, and were actually pretty awesome when I decked myself out in Etsy's finest. The seamstress, Maria, is great, and everyone you work with at Martellen's is really down to earth and looking out for you. If you're a low-key bride -- or even if you're not -- this is a great group of ladies to work with. There are selections for girls like me, and for those who want to look princessy. This place was amazing! From the moment we arrived Karen was sweet and friendly. She made the entire experience so magical and fun. Shopping here was like shopping with a friend. Karen was able to pick out some beautiful styles based on my conversation with her and there was absolutely no high pressure selling going on. I didn't buy a dress today but did fall in love with a particular Stella York gown that was gorgeous and I'm pretty positive I'll be back! After several visits to other shops, my mom insisted that I try Martellen's Bridal because of a recommendation she received from someone. I was hesitant, because my mom has been MOMZILLA during my wedding planning process, so I was not excited to give in... However, MOMZILLA was right! Mary Ellen was absolutely amazing, and I am not the easiest person to work with! To begin with, Martellen's is not open on Mondays, but Mary Ellen opened her shop for my mom, myself, and a posse of BMs and family. I came in without high expectations, because I have really struggled with finding what I want. Mary Ellen asked me the usual questions about what I wanted and I gave her a very poor description of everything I didn't like... easy to work with right? Mary Ellen just put me at ease and brought me about 8 dresses ranging in different styles and patiently helped me into each one. I am slightly larger than the standard bridal sample size of 8 or 10, but she actually helped me into each dress, tying each one up to allow me to see what each dress would look like. At the 4/5 other places I tried, the consultants didn't do much to help me into the dresses or suggest other styles when I wasn't happy with the dresses they bought. In the end, I was between 2 dresses, and Mary Ellen helped me in and out of the two of them 3 seperate times, veils included, so that I was able to make the best decision. I found the most beautiful Maggie Sottero dress and I couldn't be happier! Mary Ellen called me the very next day to let me know about an approximate delivery date and it was several weeks sooner than we initially thought. I will be returning to Martellen's soon to pick out bridesmaid dresses and all of my accessories, as well as to use their alterations services as well. I worked with Karen and she pulled many dresses that I loved. The store was very comfortable and had a large selection of dresses. I visited stores in Chicago that didn't have many different sized dresses so Martellen's was nice in that there was a bigger selection. Before you go shopping, read this so you don't get duped This dress shop was not helpful to my now wife. The staff are very rude and not accommodating. I personally visited this shop to resolve the issue of alteration work that was performed and try to get our money returned. The shop owner was not helpful what so ever, claiming another seamstress could worked with my wife if she didn't like the one that made the alterations. This information was never communicated, causing my wife to take her dress elsewhere. I returned to get a refund on the alterations that ended up getting removed before the dress left the shop. The owner made it VERY clear she only deals with woman. She would not return the money because the staff member had already been paid. What happened to the day of the consumer being right? read more

Bought my daughter's veil and MOB dress. Veil given to me like it was shipped, folded and smashed in a small plastic bag. Bought the dress everyone thought was perfect including staff and customers. I was so excited when I purchased my wedding dress here. The attendants who helped me were truly amazing and very helpful which is the only reason I gave this boutique a star at all. My dress was supposed to arrive in January 2015 after I purchased the dress in August 2014. I had missed a call from the boutique in the beginning of January and when I called back only a few hours later, I was told they had pushed my dress arrival to later ship date to accommodate another bride. My dress would now arrive at the end of MARCH! When I spoke to owner about what had happened she said she thought she was doing me a favor by pushing it back! I was upset that they made the decision to move my dress arrival without my consent after I'd already paid for half of the dress. When I asked the owner if they could provide any discount or markdown for the inconvenience it caused me I was immediately shutdown and told that they could not do anything about the price. In fact, the Owner hung up on me at one point! So much for customer service!! I have never been treated so rudely in my entire life. They were clearly in the wrong for giving my dress away without my consent and then on top of that they couldn't accommodate me in any way on price. Furthermore, the owner could not be more rude to me on the phone. This was supposed to be a memorable and exciting purchase for me, not one that added more stress to the planning process. I did finally get my dress at the end of March after I emailed them to find out it had arrived 3 days earlier, thanks for letting me know! This all could have been avoided had the owner been understanding and apologetic about her decision to giveaway my dress. A terrible experience! read more

Such a great place. This was the second store I went to and had such a beautiful shopping experience. I went with my mother, sister, and one of my bridesmaids and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The store is really cute, great seating area for the guests, and we were the only ones in there so it felt so personal and private. Kathy was the only one in the store that day and she was so sweet. Very friendly and personable and made me feel so comfortable and attended to. They don't work on commission so the consultants are super patient and not pushy at all. That is important to me, you never want to be rushed for time or pressured to purchase. Regarding dresses: I love the Maggie Sottero dresses, and ended up really loving a Casablanca dress that Kathy suggested I try. Honestly, the dress selection did not look huge but I tried on about 7 dresses and ended up loving 2, so it was a super successful appointment in my book. read more

This review is specifically for their special occasion dresses - not bridal gowns. I currently live in DC and my brother is getting married in October. I visited the shop recently on a Friday morning while I was in town visiting my parents. My mom was in search of her dress for the wedding. She had done the internet searching and found Martellen's. What a find!! Of course, because it was early on a weekday we had the shop to ourselves, which was really nice. We had been to one other shop the day before and were disappointed in their selection of MOB and MOG dresses. Well, Martellen's delivered where the other had failed. They have such a lovely assortment of absolutely beautiful dresses!! I really couldn't believe how many they had that were appropriate for many different styles/kinds of wedding. A lot of the dresses did lean to the very formal, but I think moms could easily find something appropriate for casual or beach weddings, too. We found plenty of beautiful options, not only to consider ordering, but for my mom to try on as well. As we all know, not being able to try on a sample is (a) disheartening and (b) doesn't give you a very good idea of what the final dress will look like. Martellen's had so many samples in larger sizes that my mom was able to try on a wide array of dress and we nearly bought one off the rack! She found a dress that is really beautiful and makes her feel good. I know she'll look fantastic in October at my brother's wedding. And while I was there, I decided to take a quick peek around at other dresses to see what she might have for bridesmaids or other occasion dresses. (There are no attendants in my brother's wedding, so I am not a bridesmaid.) Anyway, I had placed an order for a dress the day before, so really wasn't looking with the intention of buying anything. But - as is such luck I found a super adorable Bari Jay bridesmaid dress that I just had to try on. And once it was on, I just had to buy it. :) We had such wonderful luck at the shop with selection and service I can't recommend this shop enough. Mary Ellen was so helpful in pulling dresses. And she also knew when to step back and let us do our own thing - - this is very tricky, I think, when in retail. If you are looking for a personable, friendly and professional experience, with a small shop carrying a wide selection, this is your place. This used to be All About the Dress and is now under new management. While I do not have experience with All About the Dress, Martellen's staff was amazing at helping me pick out my wedding dress. I came in after being referred from a friend (and visiting several other shops) and was thrilled with everything. The shop is super cute and the ladies, Mary Ellen & Kathy, listened to what I wanted and even came up with some of their own ideas based on what I was telling them. They weren't overly pushy and let me try on and browse dresses at my own pace. This was my first bridal boutique ever visited and my experience was amazing all around. The shop owners and the girls who work here are very welcoming. They answer your every request and were willing to show me all of the dresses I requested. Being that bridal gowns can sometimes tend be overpriced the prices here are reasonable. The quality of the gowns are very good and they have a variety of selections to choose from. I loved everything about this boutique it was small, personable, and welcoming. I recently went to Martellen's to try on wedding dresses, and the experience was really fantastic. I was excited, but a little bit worried about wedding dress shopping because I sometimes get overwhelmed with too many choices. Everyone in the shop was very welcoming, and my consultant Kathy was so much fun. She let me pick out some styles I liked and was very patient with me while I figured out what I liked/didn't like. Most of all, I didn't feel pressured or rushed AT ALL while I was there, even though my appointment ran over. At the end of the day, I found a dress I love and bought it! I hope my alterations appointment goes as well. The shop itself is small, but it has a great selection, and the gowns are fairly priced. Overall, wonderful experience! read more

Martellens Bridal is an amazing bridal shop filled with the most beautiful dresses. Mary Ellen selected this gown for my daughter, and it was perfect. We couldn't be happier with the attention to detail you experience when working with Maryellen and her entire staff. Her associate, Marybeth and Maryellen also helped me with my mother of the bride dress.
