It took 4 calls to get a straight answer about if they were open a certain day with availability for resvered dining. My aunt initially called and got the complete opposite answer from when I followed up. A few more back and forths but I was finally told they were open and I could make a reservation. Once there, everything was wonderful! A upscale setting with lake views perfect for a celebratory dinner. Everyone left full and happy. Pros : - Place has a nice environment for special occasions and dates, with a great view. - Classic Burger is delicious, also their Mushroom soup is super tasty ! - Prices are ok. Cons : - French Fries was super dry and felt like overcooked. - There were many insects on the windows flying everywhere. It doesn't feel clean that much. - Lady at the front desk was super grumpy and bored didn't help us or welcome us appropriately, just because you have a nice place and good food doesn't give you the benefit of acting very unprofessional with customers. - The waiter (Gerard) was being too forward with me that made me feel very uncomfortable. I sensed some weird vibes. I don't know if the vibese were hitting on me or what, but that was definitely inappropriate. Specially that I was with my WIFE ! And anyone can tell that we were on a date for a special occasion obviously ! Gerard talked to me in a flirty way and laughed and jumped in a weird way as I received the receipt and I was just trying to be nice. I was planning to have my sisters' 50th bday. Tried 5 times to make a reservation and kept leaving a message with hostess. After the 5th time the manager just answered very rudely that they didn't have room that day and that they left a message to notify me (not a single message or missed call from them ) I guess we won't be here anytime soon read more

This review is not about the food but about the service. We have a 3 year old and 1.5 year old. We do not go out to dinner much with them because obviously toddlers can be a handful, especially when the day is winding down. Tonight we thought we would give it a shot and our kids were just a little too much so we decided to ask for our food to go. Management sent us home with two free desserts since our "night was cut short". That was very thoughtful. We decided to eat out tonight at the newly opened "Terrace". The menu is limited but there is a full offering of drinks. Plus a few just for the Terrace. The dinners are a salad and pizza, and drinks. The bar and kitchen are right there in the Terrace itself! So no waiting on the main kitchen!! Great idea!! We ordered the Sausage pizza and we're not disappointed! It stared to rain while we're were seated outside. We got a table with an umbrella and stayed fairly dry. As we were sitting there they offered us a feta, artichoke salad with a small loaf of bread. The salad had balsamic dressing and was super delicious! Plus it was free for our patients and endurance during the rain! Our pizza arrived and was really fantastic! The meat and banana peppers were a perfect compliment to each other. This is one of my favorite spots in Kalamazoo!! Everytime I have gone there, I have never been disappointed. I have tried multiple things and they are all always amazing. They used to offer sweet potato as an appetizer with balsamic glaze and parmesan which they have removed. However, last time they were very accommodating and let us order it. The bruschetta is also one of the best I have had. The restaurant has a great ambiance. I would recommend reservations. They have a fireplace indoors which is a perfect to reserve during the cold winter months. And outdoor seating for the summer time. read more

Had my daughter's wedding shower here. FABULOUS! Jessica, the asst general manager, was so accommodating. We were allowed to bring in decorations and our own cake. The chef even cut the cake after consulting me for our preferences. Top notch! With only 15 guests, ordered off the menu for lunch. Wait staff and host were very attentive and helpful. Food was delicious! We had our spot (overlooking the lake) for 5 hours! The guests were enchanted with the entire experience. We went to Martells for the first time and were happily surprised! Our friends had recommended it to us. It was busy on a Friday night, waited about 30-45 minutes to be seated. I would recommend a reservation and we plan on making one when we go again in the future. The food was good, I had the gnocchi and my fiancé had the ravioli. Visited Martell's for the first time last night to celebrate. We arrived around 7 and only waited a few minutes for a table, otherwise could have went to the bar area for immediate seating. I tried a cup of the mushroom soup, which people were commenting about - good mushroomy quality. We each order pasta, off the fall menu, it was also good. Sad they ran out of items to make an espresso martini, I was looking forward to trying. Instead the snickerdoodle was alright. This restaurant has a Beautiful ambiance, a very relaxing view and is beautiful. Our server was very nice. My husband ordered swordfish and it was delicious but the price $42 for probably 8 oz. Is a bit pricey but it's ok because it was good. I ordered the California salad with shrimp on the side. That's was todays special but I don't think there was anything special on that. The shrimp was oily, the California salad presentation and taste was not good. We agreed against my better judgement to try again. My second order was salmon that looked good, but the inside was way undercooked, I was so disappointed. When we wanted to talk to The manager did not appear to be sorry but did correct the bill, he was rude! Sorry, overall I don't recommend this restaurant! Lots of dining space and a cozy bar room for dining. I had a creamy corned beef chowder, which was just the right temperature. I ordered the kids portion of angel hair and meatballs, which was more than enough for me. My teenaged grandson finished it off, after he ate his double portion! We had an issue with the prime rib sandwiches the rest of the group ordered. One was ordered with no cheese, so they didn't put cheese on any of them. One was supposed to be medium and it was well done, so back to the kitchen it went and it's replacement was satisfactory. My husband ate his as served and he said it was good. Our waitress was alittle slow, but I'm sure it was because she had a lot of tables. Seems like all the restaurants are having waitstaff and kitchen help shortages. We were looking for a place to have a late lunch/early dinner, and this place came highly recommended by a staff at the Air Zoo, so we decided to give it a try. Turned out to be a great recommendation! The location is amazing. We sat inside with a window view of the pond, but the outdoor set-up is proper and legit. I got the Gorgonzola Burger with a side of veggies; the burger really hit the spot, especially with the cheese-blend topping, but the veggies were a bit overcooked with zero seasoning. In Michigan for our anniversary, picked martells based off the photos I saw online, and I'm so glad I did! We visited later in the day so atmosphere was perfect to appreciate restaurant decor and the surrounding scenery. Our waitress Courtney was very kind and efficient with her service, a much appreciated show of talent and work ethic(we're from Chicagoland area and service SUCKS)! The last time I had been to this location must have been so long ago because back then it was called The Black Swan. My partner and I were looking for a nice dinner before seeing a play downtown so we made reservations for 5:00pm. This hour seemed to be really light on traffic so it was very quiet and our food came out so quickly. Our server was helpful and friendly. Their cocktails are well priced and well made. I had the French 75. I ordered the Orechietti and my partner ordered the Salmon BLT. They serve you warm, seasoned bread with whipped butter. My office had our holiday luncheon here. I had not been to this place before I found the atmosphere nice, in the summer the view of the lake must be nice. The food was delicious, I have never had sweet potato fries that good. The burger was cooked to perfection and juicy, the bun was fresh too. Every Christmas Eve my family goes to Martell's. They always bring back specials from when it was formerly the Black Swan, including their famous Beef Wellington dish. The best way to start is with their Caesar Salad. The Parmesan bowl is a highlight that my family and I look forward to, and it's a good portion so you're not too full for a main course. The entrées on their menu are always the perfect size. This year, they had crab stuffed salmon. The crab wasn't too overwhelming and the salmon was stuffed just right. Paired with the couscous, it was definitely on the lighter side. This was great from all the other beef and starch I'd been eating for the holidays. They brew local Water Street coffee and have a great dessert and wine menu. The cheesecake always is amazing in addition to their crème brûlée. Looking forward to coming back next Christmas Eve. read more

Celebration, again, of our anniversary...so naturally we go to where he proposed! Martell's consistently delivers amazing food with wonderful service. Our anniversary happened to land on Monday which coincidently is 30% off day for those with a Millennium Card (which is free, and can be used in any of their restaurants for points! Why wouldn't you get one?) My darling husband got the pot roast, which was amazing. I ordered the salmon, which was just beautiful and delicious. I ordered the tiramisu, because I wanted it. Went for lunch. I'm going 5 for atmosphere, cleanliness & charm of the restaurant. Drinks were good. My soup was overlooked & served after my burger arrived. Now for the food. All three of us ordered a burger, with different cheeses on each. I'm not sure if this is normal for this entree, and my husband claimed they were "char-broiled". Neither one of us finished. I tried it off if the bun, my hubs ate with just bottom bun, & our 3rd person tackled with the bun, but cut in half. No one finished it. The meat was lumpy, dry, (char?), grizzly & has sworn me off of beef for a very long time. We probably should have chosen something else. Fries were leftover tasting, dry, crunchy. But the soup! Easy and quick delicious dinner. We usually go to Martell's when we want a nicer dinner but still has a causal feel. We typically eat in the bar area which is a tad more causal and it does have 1 TV. The bar area however is very dark. For June they have a few specials, one was the Mango Me drink that was refreshing. Not too sweet, and had just the right amount of Mango. Another at our table tried the special soup for the month, zuppa. It is a spicy crab and corn soup, they enjoyed it. Best plate at the table hands down was the pit roast!! Starting off with saying the service here is excellent. Helpful, kind, polite, and on it! My five stars went to the service alone. But if I could give another five for the food. I would! The Salmon is hands down the best I've had in town. That light crisp, the balsamic glaze, and the pesto & pepper accents. My stomach begged for more, but that's what dessert is for. The tiramisu and crème brûlée were just mouth watering! They were also so considerate! They made sure foods I am allergic too, never made contact with my plate, nor me. My husband and I came here for our 1st wedding anniversary in late September 2012. We made reservations and we sat in the dining room that had a fireplace and low-lighting glow. I remember looking out toward the windows to water as well. It was a lovely restaurant. I know I had wine from Argentina and my husband had a Chilean beer. We had steak dinners and one of my coworkers surprised us with our tiramisu dessert. It was a lovely night out--I only wish I took more pictures! We no longer live in Michigan but maybe we'll be back again someday to have another lovely anniversary dinner. We highly recommend! read more

Really nice place for a 35th Anniversary Dinner, with some really strong pluses, but a significant couple gaps. Busy and noisy for a Monday night, but there was some special deals, so more crowded and slower than I expected. Pluses: Super luscious smooth-as-butter scallops appetizer (and main with pappardelle). Really top shelf. Very nice & reasonable wines and drinks. Consistently "always order" mushroom soup. Shortfalls: So-so prime rib, which the table knife would cut, but the steak knife wouldn't (?). Over-flamed brûlée with crunchy cold granular sugar under layer. A secret gem! My son was moving and we decided to take a break and get some dinner. I have food restrictions and so wanted to find a place we could go and not be too challenged. I saw the good reviews and with my restrictions, I knew we had to stay away from chain restaurants. This place is nestled in the woods on a lake.
