So I think the opinions of this ice cream establishment is all about preferences. It all really depends on what kind of ice cream you are looking for. The flavors here are many and they churn their own ice cream which gives it a thicker and denser consistency than your typical creamy and smooth ice cream. I got the vanilla with fudge swirl and it was very good and my wife got the M&M one and she liked it yet thought it was a little too thick. We really didn't get a chance to see what the service was like as they were very busy but they were quick with all the people ordering. Lastly there isn't a lot of room to sit and chill and eat your frozen treat but you can go behind the building to play some putt putt golf. Also it is a little pricier. We got two small one scoop cups and it was $12 but that is to be expected with OOB and Funtown Splashtown right around the corner. Drove over here on a hot Saturday afternoon for some mini golf. Had no idea there was an ice cream shoppe here as well which was a welcome surprise. Opted for the Peanut Butter and Maple scoops on a large waffle cone ($6ish). The peanut butter flavor is great - intense all the way through, going well with the cone. Maple is more subtle but sweet forward. Cone is thin, so it can melt through the bottom a bit if not finishing quickly. On the plus side, they also let you eat the ice cream on the course. Service can take some time as they do get a bunch of orders on a hot weekend. Good place to try if wanting to play some holes too. read more

It's hard to mess up ice cream in my opinion. Martels doesn't mess it up, but I wasn't impressed. I had high expectations as it always seems busy, but the texture was... too ice crystally. Like it had melted a bit and refrozen. Lots of options, maybe I'll try again. I had cherry vanilla. Inclusion of cherries was great, but there weren't enough in my opinion. My husband and I were on the hunt for some ice cream. I was surprised that so many ice cream places were closed or closed by around 8. We probably drove around for an hour looking for ice cream. We passed this place and drove up about 9:02. All the lights were out and we figured we missed this one by a hair. Turns out they closed at 9. Well as we had drove up to look, someone from the inside motioned to us to come up and that they would still take our order. The ice cream was good. Most of all we were impressed by the kindness to take us even though there was no question that it was closing time. I stumbled upon Martel's when driving my youngest son to work at Funtown. Martel's can often look crowded from the front, don't let that steer you away, there is plenty of room! The ice cream Martel's makes their ice cream in house and it is VERY good ice cream! They have a variety of special flavors, like the vanilla packed with rainbow sprinkles (a kaleidoscope for the eyes!). If the line on the front porch is too long, go inside and order! The food Martel's also sells a small but mighty menu of sandwiches, which has come in handy a few times! They have various Maine italian sandwiches, tuna, and blts (to name a few). Their sandwiches run around $5 and are fresh and filling. They also serve sandwiches all through the day, until they close at 10. Thank you! The shop/super cool jukebox If you walk in on the right of the front porch, the inside of the shop has a large counter for ordering, and small tables in the back. There is also a bathroom, and the COOLEST 1958, fully functioning juke box! 25 cents will get you 3 plays. The choices are old school, BUT you get to watch the record and needle come out to play your tune. My ONLY (small) complaint about the juke box is that the volume is turned down so low, that it can be hard to hear the music! The mini golf Don't know. Great ice cream with mini-golf out back. Its hot out there so beware. The 18 holes are showing their age a bit, but for the most part are well maintained. Its an easy course and fun for everyone. The woman working asked if he'd eaten any... he hesitated then his mom said "no" (so he probably had),then she took the sundae and put it in her freezer next to the ice cream they serve. Martels is one the first and best signs of spring/summer in southern Maine! I love their ice cream and make it a point to go every year a bunch of times.
