I have been going to Martha's for over 20 years. I use to go every week. The last several times our food was cold and came out very fast,so I knew my food was being microwaved. Today,I ordered a certain wine,we got what ever the waitress wanted to give us,no check back,no extra napkins,no extra limes I asked for. So everyone has a bad day,but this was the 4th time. Mom found one scallop in her dish and shrimp tasted old. WE felt ripped off for $65 for lunch. I'll have to find a new place. We tasted a little chemicals in the desert we shared. Food from old Mexico never tasted like this. Everything is pretty bland. The Seafood Enchilada is supposed to have shrimp and crab in it. My friend and I ordered it and the crab was invisible and tasteless. My friend ordered a margarita. It was the worst either of us had ever had. Truly undrinkable. I ordered Sangria. My wife and I went here for lunch, after reading some good reviews. I ordered the fried mahimahi fish wrap and my wife ordered a regular chicken burrito. Our food came. My roll was cut in half and I could clearly see the fried fish was still raw inside. I sent it back. Meanwhile, we were out of chips. No refills. The second attempt at the fish wrap was great. We both finished our drinks and the waitress never asked if we wanted a refill. She walked past at least a dozen times. I've been coming here for well over a decade, since I was just a kid and Martha's was my family's first choice when they wanted higher quality Mexican. I've never disliked the place. Everything has good flavor and their free apps--bean dip, salsa, and fresh chips--are killer. Ambiance is festive and colorful, and there's a pleasant little patio out back for warm weather dining. Their tortillas have the perfect amount of char and overall presentation is beautiful. Prices are not outrageous, but are a bit steep for what you get--$5 for a child-size plate of rice and beans for example. At El Mariachi in Occidental, you can buy double that amount for under $4. I mean, at the end of the day, this is Mexican food, a cuisine famous for utilizing incredibly cheap ingredients. In the past, service has always been quick and professional, but lately I've noticed a definite carelessness emerging. For instance, I was recently left waiting for my change a good 20 min. while one of the owners chatted--right in front of me, no less--with what I presumed to be a group of her friends. Another time, I saw a worker in the kitchen filling to-go orders and she wrapped a burrito in a completely split tortilla--didn't bother to get a new one, just continued wrapping. The thing probably fell apart as soon as it was opened. I've noticed this often happens when a restaurant becomes too successful and popular; standards fall because they know they already have a loyal customer base. It's still a decent place, though, and well worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

We get there at 5 o'clock and there's a group of customers waiting to get in. A good sign for a good restaurant. The service is prompt and courteous. I love the furnishings. Always neat and clean and very creative. This is some of the best Mexican food we've ever had. We live in the Sacramento area and have a home in Bodega Bay. It's easy to miss this place from driving past, so slow down and find a close place to park and enjoy a Sebastopol favorite. Super efficient service and a large menu. I had the carnitas, and the plate came with the traditional rice and beans, but also a little salad with a spoonful of guacamole on top. The tortillas were corn and flour. 2nd time going here... seems like they use frozen rice (peas, carrots, corn in it) and overall their food is pretty bland and unimpressive. Should be noted that the seasoning on the chicken is stuck on with flour, a gluten free member of our group ordered a salad with chicken and got sick unfortunately. I rarely order anything other than their fish tacos when I come here. They're just damn delicious and when I find something good, I'll keep coming back. Pro Tip: If you like spicy, ask them for some of their roasted salsa/hot sauce and some of the mango habanero sauce. They're both super hot and I like them a lot more than the salsa they bring out on the table. Their salsa isn't bad, it's just a little mild for my tastes. A GREAT FIND IN SEBASTOPOL! While travelling through town after picking up some apples, we stumbled across Martha's looking for a place for lunch. Took a chance and peered inside, which consisted of a small eating area along the kitchen and there were no diners there. The staff asked if we wanted to sit in the patio and what a surprise! The patio area is beautiful and added a wonderful ambiance to the lunch. Now for the food: ordered the carne asada and the quesadilla. Both were excellent. The carne asada came with a generous portion of steak with grilled vegetables, beans, guacamole and tortillas. The meat was tender and seasoned nicely. The quesadilla was also served with generous portions of beans, vegetables and it was very tender and tasty. The chips are fresh and the salsa and bean dip added to the snacking before the main event. Overall this is a great place for a very nice Mexican meal. read more

Marthas is hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Bay area-- and I've lived throughout the Bay Area all my life! My favorite dish is the Demon Delight ( prawns, chicken or steak) and the Macarena Enchilada-- the sauces taste fresh and made from scratch, meats are lean and not gristly, portions very generous...I love this place! read more

We walked in and were seated immediately. It took 40 minutes to be greeted by our waitress and have our order taken. We hadn't received drinks, only chips and salsa at the time. We placed our order and after waiting an hour we finally received our food. The to go pickups were in and out like crazy but everyone dining in had to wait. We can hear other families complaining about the wait that were seated around us. The waitress never acknowledged or warned us about a delay in service. Granted it was Cinco De Mayo though no dining-in customers should have to wait nearly two hours for their food to be served. Food was mid, nothing special to make up for the long wait. Another Sebastopol eatery going downhill. Customer service was awful, every employee seemed confused when we asked where our food or waitress was. Never offered chip or drink refills either during our two hours sitting there. read more

Sofie and I ate there several days ago. My outstanding memory is that while the food is fresh and delicious, but it was over salted. I hope that was a fluke. We will try it again. It was an interesting chipotle/spinach soup with bits of tortilla strips in it. It was a little sour with good flavor. The soup was not over salted. I had the enchilada cancun. This is a shrimp enchilada. It was very tasty - but too salty. Sofie had a burrito - which was over salted. I like the cheerful atmosphere - bright colors and stuff tastefully hung on the walls to give the place the atmosphere of what I expect it's like to dine in Mexico. The two things that annoyed me is the bathroom and the wall at our table. The men's bathroom has no ventilation. How could that be? I don't know the building codes, but I expect there has to be something about ventilation. The wall? I have this habit of looking at the walls while I'm waiting for food. I started doing that years ago when eating at a Chinese place and was amused to see particles of food stuck to the wall from past feeding frenzys of earlier customers. I suppose on a scale of 1-4, where 4 is food stuck to the wall and 1 is none, I'd give this place a 3. It's easy to see where the liquids were splattered. I personally have a 3 right at my computer desk where I knocked over a glass of wine and splattered my wall a couple of weeks ago. It's such a pain to go find the correct paint and repaint the wall, but I'm not running a restaurant and it's my wine stains. I don't want to see yours. Martha's is close to the theater. We've been going here for years, and shame on me for not reviewing it sooner. Every time we're in Sebastopol we make a point of eating lunch here; we even went out of our way to eat here on our way home from camping once, and let me tell you that after three days of burgers, hot dogs, and s'mores, Martha's was a godsend. I like sitting outside in the covered area in the back; the whole place is charming, but out back is definitely the best place to sit. First, the chips and salsa are great. They also give you this fantastic bean dip. I don't know what's in it, but it's great mixed with the salsa or on its own. We finished an entire basket of chips, which we never do. If you're dining with someone who doesn't like that bean dip, dump the basket of chips over their head. Seriously, do it. The food is great; it's kind of Mexican feedbag--which I love--but better; big portions, lots of beans and cheese, great meats and salsas. And the ingredients are good; for instance, you can tell the cheese doesn't come from a massive plastic bag of flavorless stuff pre-shredded in the factory. On our last visit I had the chicken burrito grande, which I didn't finish. That NEVER happens. But I think I'd filled up on chips, salsa, and bean dip. One of my sons had the beef quesadilla, and he told me after one bite that he was not going to share it with me. Little bastard. I finally intimidated him into sharing, and it was great; lots of bits of roasted red pepper in the meat. And the meat/cheese balance was perfect. Maybe the best quesadilla I've had. Service is good; always friendly and attentive. Martha's will continue to lure us to Sebastopol. read more
