After seeing the reviews we came to this place to strictly try the bakery items. We enjoy trying bakery's around the city to see which ones are worth returning too. This morning we got some concha's and several other pastry's to try. They were all over baked, some burnt, and had the strangest texture. I'm a newbie when it comes to Mexican pastries, and this bakery had a lot of different sweets to choose from! In case you were looking for something more than a place to satisfy your sweet tooth, they are also a restaurant that serves up burritos, tamales, and a lot more. The worker there was extremely nice-- we were browsing the breads (obviously newcomers), and he asked us if we needed help and to let him know if we had any questions. The breads and pastries aren't labeled (which would have been really helpful!). I think we picked a Concha bread (brown ones are chocolate, white and yellow ones are vanilla). The bread was ever-so-slightly sweet, not as soft as I thought it would be, but a satisfying treat for two people for a mere 65 cents! ^^ I'll come back to try other, more sugary-looking treats :) read more

I kept seeing people going in and out and that was advertisement enough for me. I went inside and ordered two breakfast tacos.First, I was pleased that the woman allowed me to order in my limited Spanish. Second, the tacos were exactly what I want in a breakfast taco. The tortilla was obviously handmade and just thick enough to hold the plethora of ingredients but thin enough to not overpower them either. The eggs were fresh and cooked through; the ham and potatoes had the perfect balance of crispy bits and tenderness; and it was all topped off with a spicy salsa/sauce that took the taco to another level. I really wanted to give this place a four or five star rating but my primal need for credibility overtook me. I've been here a couple of times in the past to get sweet pastries. I was never impressed. A neighbor recommended this place for breakfast tacos which I love, so I came. Their tacos were good but I've been spoiled by Fuzzy's across the lake. I don't understand whether Fuzzy puts cocaine in theirs or what. It would seem like anybody could make good bacon, egg and cheese tacos (except Torchy's) but Fuzzy's are better than others. If the breakfast tacos here had been as good I would have given them 4 stars but nobody's are. I repeat this place's breakfast tacos are good. I also got a cream horn to go. So I love me some taquerias you know. I saw this little spot and had to give it a try. Stepping inside I did not feel very welcome. They don't really have a menu with prices and such and they were not helpful at all. I went with a chicken Torta since it was lunch. It was a little pricey. The bread was super fresh and the ingredients were not bad. I found a couple of chicken bones in my Torta though.The whole time I sat there I felt the staff and patrons were giving me the stink eye for some reason. They have a huge selection of Pan Dulce but I was not clear on the prices or how to help myself. Of course no one offered help. Fresh-baked bread! You can't go wrong. Pan dulce (sweet bread)!!! This small hole-in-the-wall panaderia serves all sorts of goodies like conchas (mildly sweet round-shaped Mexican bread topped with sugar...I usually pile up on these babies), empanadas de piña (pineapple...and other flavors too!), cookies, and cakes. Each is only 50 cents (including tax). Just walk right in, grab a metal tray and tongs, and then go hog-wild & pile your tray with whatever you want. Then drag your goodies to the counter. While you're at it, grab some Nescafé or Abuelita (hot chocolate)....I usually dip my conchas in these. There's also a small menu on the wall for lunch items. I should have paid closer attention to what it actually said, but I was too busy watching the tv playing Spanish shows. I usually grab my stuff to-go 'cuz it's a tiny place with only 4 tables. And besides, I usually get there just when they're about to close (9pm). read more

I went to this panaderia excited to find sweet bread close to where I live. They have a decent selection and a variety of pastries. I was really excited when I came home because I haven't had sweet bread in a while. Well, I was highly disappointed in the quality and taste of the bread and will not be returning. I got a few types of bread and most were stale. The conchas that I enjoy crumbled when I split them in half. It had the staleness of a 3-4 day old piece of bread. I also got a square of pay de queso. It seems as though they may have forgotten to put sugar in the mix. It did not have any flavor and was not even sweet. I got a coconut cookie too and it was the best one of all. It needed a bit more sugar but the toasted coconut was tasty. I'll be looking for another panaderia. Even the HEB conchas are tastier. read more

Come here for your extremely affordable and yummy Mexican pastries. My mom and I would come here together before New Year's Eve and pick up a bunch of gingerbread pigs to share at parties. I love the style of the pastry here -- sweet but not cloying. Highlights for me include the pumpkin empanadas and anything with sweet cheese inside. Expect to pay about fifty cents per pastry. (That can make for a lot of pastry buying!) However, don't expect that bag of baked goods you bring home to last for very long...these things are wont to go away mysteriously once placed on the counter. read more

The tortillas here are excellent and available for purchase. The barbacoa tacos are very good as well, fresh, not greasy and hearty. The salsas are made from scratch, and have just the right amount of kick. This is a hidden gem in Clear Lake and definitely recommend checking it out. read more

Love Martinez bakery! Usually come here for breakfast, either for the family when they visit or to share at work. Their breakfast tacos are good, but get the flour tortilla - so fresh and homemade! I like steak and egg, but also get bean and cheese for the vegetarians, and those are very cheesy. Skip the coffee, though. Gorditas are good. Their soups are amazing and will heal you when sick - I prefer the shrimp soup, but their caldo de res is very home-y. We've also tried the chicken plate, and it was delicious. The red salsa is flavorful without making your nose run. And their fresh squeezed orange juice - again, can't beat the homemade taste. They have a huge pastry selection. My favorites are anything with a cheese filling. I also enjoyed their churros, which have a cajeta filling, and the marranitos. You'll find the standards, like empanadas, and a few other things I don't recognize as I'm mostly used to Mexican bakeries, and I believe the owners are Central American. They had some French-looking pastries, too. Truth be told, you can't go wrong with your selection, and I look forward to trying something new every visit. There have been a few changes here since my last review. The good news is they have expanded the dining area, and now there are about 8-10 tables, giving the place a more "diner" feel. I still usually get things to go, but now it's not as cramped. On the minus side, they still don't have their prices up on the wall, and they've raised some of their prices. Also, the torta I got today doesn't compare favorably to previous ones I've had, maybe they're cutting back, but there was no avocado, grilled peppers or refried beans on my torta today, just meat, lettuce, onions and mayo. The bolillo was still top-notch, which you would expect from a panaderia. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could, since there has been a small dip. read more

This is a great Mexican bakery! The prices are very reasonable, the quality is outstanding and everything is very fresh. I love this place and make a point of stopping by during almost every visit to Houston (explaining the sacks of fresh baked goods to the TSA is always fun). I visited this place quite a few times since I live right down the street. The last time I tried them I called in an order for 4 burritos. Total of 20 something dollars. I picked up my order about 15 min later and brought them home when I realized that the order was wrong. I immediately called them back and they told me that I could bring them back and have them exchanged for new ones. I drove back to the bakery and walked to the front. The clerk came to the front and told me that they were making new ones but I would have to pay extra because they had to make it again. I told him that I wasn't going to pay a dime more! He insisted I pay to which I replied "just give me my money back!" He said "oh, well I can't give you your money back!" I told him that he could and would give me my money back and that it was ridiculous that I would have to pay more to remake an order that they messed up! He then offered to wave the charge, but by this time I was already upset and just got my money and left! I will never be back to this place. Los Ramirez is right down the street and treats their customers a lot better. They will get my business from now on. read more
