NOTED. I'll come back. Fast forward to an early August Thursday when my Lancaster Adventure Day brought me back within striking distance of Lititz. I remembered my unfinished pretzel business from the year before and worked a visit into my afternoon. This time, I did my homework first! The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery is more than just a place to buy pretzels. Founded in 1861, it's America's first commercial pretzel bakery, and the Sturgis family is the oldest pretzel-baking family in America. The historic building itself dates all the way back to 1784, so you're walking into a legitimate piece of Pennsylvania history. Even better? They offer interactive tours! I was able to reserve my tour online ahead of time, selected the 3pm time slot and received a confirmation letting me know I'd pay when I arrived. For only $6 for an adult tour, this felt like a ridiculously inexpensive addition to my adventure day. Supposedly, I was also going to learn how to twist a pretzel. An interactive food experience AND some Pennsylvania history for $6?! Heck yes! Let the countdown begin! Traffic getting into Lititz was a bit challenging that afternoon, but I pulled in right on time for my 3pm tour. I found metered street parking within a short walk of the bakery and paid about $3 for an hour and a half, which gave me plenty of time for the tour and some shopping afterward. I checked in at the desk just inside the door, paid my $6 and headed directly into the tour. Our guide was energetic, engaging and really good at keeping both the adults and the little kids interested. The tour lasted about 25 to 30 minutes and covered the history of Julius Sturgis, America's pretzel-baking history, the original ovens and how pretzel making has changed since the bakery opened in 1861. Then came my favorite part...WE GOT TO TWIST PRETZELS! Everyone received a piece of practice dough and our guide walked us through how to roll and properly twist it into that iconic pretzel shape. Learning the history and meaning behind the different steps of twisting the pretzel was probably my favorite part of the entire tour. One important thing to know ahead of time: you aren't actually making an edible pretzel during the tour. The dough is strictly for practicing the twisting technique and gets discarded afterward due to food safety regulations. I was a tiny bit disappointed because I had visions of proudly eating my handcrafted masterpiece, but once I understood why, it made sense. But what DID I get to keep?! My OFFICIAL PRETZEL TWISTER CERTIFICATE! Listen, I'm a kid at heart. You give me a certificate announcing that I have successfully learned how to twist a pretzel and I am going to treasure that thing like I just completed an advanced degree in carbohydrates. I'm absolutely framing it. And I'm absolutely hanging it somewhere among my legitimate professional certificates. After the tour, everyone received a small bag of Julius Sturgis hard pretzels and was encouraged to explore the bakery store. They had all kinds of pretzel goodies and souvenirs, including pretzels, shirts, aprons, magnets and other fun little mementos. I found the prices surprisingly reasonable for a tourist attraction. Since I couldn't eat the pretzel I twisted, there was really only one responsible course of action...buy a soft pretzel. And it was fantastic! Their soft pretzels are baked fresh on-site using Julius Sturgis' original recipe, and mine was fluffy, warm and generously covered in salt. It was my first Julius Sturgis soft pretzel and a pretty fantastic way to finish the experience. For $6, I thought the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery tour was an awesome little experience. It's interactive, educational, inexpensive and extremely family-friendly. There were some very young kiddos in my group, and our guide did a great job keeping them involved and entertained. Would I take the tour again? Probably not, simply because I feel like I got the full experience the first time. But should you do it once? Absolutely! It's Pennsylvania history you can touch, twist and then celebrate afterward by eating a completely different pretzel someone else professionally made for you. And you'll have the certificate to prove it!

At the end, they give you a small bag of hard pretzels. The storytelling was good and the workers were friendly, but I wasn't too impressed. It's a small, cramped space, and I'd recommend the tour for kids 8 and up. Our group had several kids ages 2-5, with lots of crying and screaming, making it hard to hear and very difficult for the storyteller. You can reserve your tour online, and they start on time, so keep that in mind. There is street parking and a few spots in the back, and we had no trouble finding a spot. There's a gift shop available and fjeu also sell soft pretzels and other snacks. Overall, it's a cute and cheap activity if you have an extra 20-30 minutes.

They're all certified Kosher, too! When the hubs and I knew we were going to be in the area, we made sure to call ahead to make an appointment to take one of their free tours. Our tour guide was Ms. Vera, and she was super informative and sooo sweet! We got to see the making of the dough, how it was kneaded by the machines, how each pretzels were all made by hand (super impressive!), how they were put in the oven and baked, and then saw how the pretzels were seasoned and packaged in the bag. We also had the chance to try a hot-out-of-the-oven extra dark pretzel - super crunchy, but a little too 'burnt' for me, but it would be super delicious dipped in hot spicy mustard or some type of cheese! The hubs and I bought a bag of extra salted pretzels and the garlic, so can't wait to dig in! Just note that this is a true pretzel factory, very no-nonsense, and even the sign is hard to miss. Candidly, I had never in my life heard of Mr. Sticky's. Naturally, I immediately went to the internet to investigate. Within approximately 30 seconds I had one very important question...HOW HAS THIS AMAZING SUGAR-FILLED ESTABLISHMENT ESCAPED MY RADAR FOR ALL THESE YEARS?! Clearly, I had some lost time to make up for. I worked Mr. Sticky's into my adventure schedule and stopped by their Lancaster location shortly after lunch on an early August Thursday. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to find this cute little building tucked into a shared parking lot with a few picnic tables outside. Even better, there wasn't anyone in line when I walked up to the window, so there was absolutely nothing standing between me and my impending sugar rush. The menu was shockingly simple, and I mean that as a compliment. In a world where I sometimes need 20 minutes and a flowchart to order dessert, Mr. Sticky's basically says, "Here's the good stuff. Pick one." Cinnamon rolls. Regular stickies. Walnut stickies. Iced cinnamon rolls. Regular icing. And...PEANUT BUTTER ICING. Well, hello there! Being myself made of approximately 63.8% peanut butter, there was no way I was leaving without investigating that situation. But I also wanted to try one of their classic stickies, so I decided to see if I could break the universe and ordered a regular sticky with peanut butter icing. Success! Even better, the peanut butter icing came in a little container on the side, allowing me complete control over exactly how ridiculous I wanted this experience to become. I collected my box and headed for one of the picnic tables in the shade. It was approximately 95 degrees outside, so I was grateful for every square inch of shade available. Then I opened the box. This sticky was HUGE! It was beautifully golden, covered in glistening glaze and smelled absolutely incredible. I was already thrilled, but there was still one very important test standing between Mr. Sticky's and greatness. The peanut butter icing. Listen, I'm particular about peanut butter icing. If you're going to invoke the sacred name of peanut butter, I need you to COMMIT. I don't want something light, airy and vaguely peanut butter adjacent. I want thick. I want rich. I want peanut butter icing that looks me directly in the eyes and says, "Yeah. I'm peanut butter. What about it?" It was time to find out if Mr. Sticky was going to become my future husband. I took one little forkful of the icing by itself. And audibly squealed. Cold. THICK. Rich. Punch-you-in-the-face peanut butter. OH. YES. Mr. Sticky understood the assignment! I knew there was absolutely no chance I was going to finish that enormous sticky in one sitting, so instead of dumping the icing all over it, I went bite by bite. A little sticky. A little peanut butter icing. Repeat until happiness occurs. And happiness absolutely occurred! The sticky itself was soft, sweet and generously glazed, and adding that ridiculously rich peanut butter icing pushed the entire thing straight over the edge. Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was that a problem? Have we met?! I'm still not sure how I grew up in Central Pennsylvania without Mr. Sticky's entering my life sooner, but I'm glad somebody finally corrected this terrible oversight. My only complaint is that the closest location is nearly an hour from my house because I can already imagine these becoming a holiday breakfast tradition. Thanksgiving morning with Mr. Sticky's? Christmas morning with Mr. Sticky's?! COME ON. Holiday made! So I'm passing along the same advice my friend gave me. If your adventures take you anywhere near Mr. Sticky's, don't just consider stopping. Make it a destination. Get the sticky. Get the peanut butter icing. And maybe don't make any legally binding matrimonial decisions until the sugar rush wears off.

It was kind of kitchy in that Pennsylvania Dutch style that you see in farmers markets at all of the pick-your-own orchards everywhere. I ended up buying a "double chocolate bread" to serve as the snack that I missed because no pretzels. It was cake, and it was uninspired.
