Leaving Umi a 5 star review is years overdue for me. I have been coming here, probably 1-3 times a year for at least 10 years. It's the perfect spot for consistent service and sushi. I always love the rolls we order and a couple of favorites are the kissy kissy and geisha. Love how you get salad and soup with a sushi roll order, not just hibachi or any other main course dish. Everything is super fresh, you can watch them prepare your rolls at the counter and then they are brought straight to your table. We have ordered hibachi chicken here. It's good but we prefer the rolls . With the other Japanese places in town I feel this one gets overlooked. I've always been able to walk right in! So if you want delicious sushi and don't want to have to wait forever or make a reservation, Umi is the place for you! read more

Really nice atmosphere. The food is good, but I wouldn't say great, except for the crab poppers which were amazing.

Our party of five was super high maintenance and I appreciate the fact that our server assisted us with a smile anyway. We had two celiac, one vegetarian, and one shellfish allergy. We all were able to order successfully and everyone survived the experience, including our server. LOL! The sushi is fresh and the rolls are pretty good, but basic. I was also discouraged to find that they are unable to make rolls without rice. It takes great skill to slice a cucumber long ways to use in place of nori so that you can make riceless rolls so I understand, but this is a skill set that all sushi chefs should learn at some point I believe. They do have an appetizer of hollowed out cucumber stuffed with imitation crab mix, but it's kind of a clunky dish and not that great. The tuna tartare was seared too hard for my liking, leaving a fishy taste. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the tables are well spaced out. We like the ambience here. 7/10 read more

What a delightful find this little restaurant was! I was in town to see my daughter in college and we were both in the mood for sushi. Oddly, in the Springfield area, Asian restaurants close at 2pm and then open later for dinner. Umi was about 5 down on Yelp recommended that is even open through from lunch until dinner so we gave it a shot. I LOVED the cozy ambience with warm & welcoming dim lighting, which would be really great for a date night. My daughter and I wanted time to visit and the waitress was very polite and accommodating with our "slower" pace. We started with a sampling of small plates (gyoza, a sushi roll, and shrimp tempura). What an amazing restaurant! We were seated right away, the feel inside the restaurant is upscale, but comfortable. The food was delicious! When I crave a specialty sushi roll, I come to UMi! My favorite are their infamous Geisha Rolls. Its a huge roll, a combination of everything that are Amazingly Deliciousness!!! You just got to try it out and see! Won't be disappointed! They also have good variety of sashimi! I only like to eat Ahi Tuna or white Tuna! Its very fresh and the slices are just right!! We were in Springfield for the long holiday weekend looking for new experiences. We saw this restaurant after missing the eatery we were seeking loosely. All I can say is "Wow!" We enjoyed the atmosphere, our server was top notch, and the food and attentive service was exceptional. Could not have had a better overall experience. We started with the gyoza, which was wonderful and presented quickly. In addition, we also discovered we received a salad (typical Japanese salad with Asian dressing) and miso soup. The wife loved both. Then we rolled (pardon the pun) into sushi. We enjoyed the Kissy Kissy roll and the Oh Yes Roll. Everything was yummy and while it was too much to eat, we did our best to complete it all. Do not hesitate to try this restaurant out and we will certainly revisit when we return to Springfield. I've been going to Umi for 15 years now and have never left disappointed. They're all about sushi and the quality of their fish is top notch. All of their sushi is great, but where they really excel is with the more elaborate sushi rolls that are fried, flaming, or just fancy in general. If you can handle a little spice, you have to try the Ninja Roll. That's the one roll we always order even if we're trying new rolls with the rest of our meal. I've been coming here since I was little and it has remained my favorite sushi restaurant in the area and better than anywhere I've been while traveling! The staff is always very friendly and the food is usually delivered quickly. We typically get sat immediately. We usually start with the Crab Poppers which are like a sweeter Crab Rangoon that's served with a sweet sauce. They start you off with a classic ginger salad which always has plenty of dressing and miso soup. I really like their soup because many restaurants just give you a miso broth but this is a bit richer. My absolute favorite roll is the Kissy Kissy Roll. If you like a cream cheesy, fried, sweet roll, this one's for you! I've never found anything like it anywhere else, and it keeps me coming back time and time again. I also really enjoy the Kiss and Cry, it's perfect if you like a little spice but not too much and the fresh avocado is always a nice touch. Who doesn't like avocado? On this trip we also tried the Ninja roll which was delicious, it was similar to the Kissy Kissy roll but with different fish and a spicy sauce. We also usually get a simple roll when we come, either a spicy crab or spicy tuna which is always well made and refreshing with the other heavier rolls. I've been here with large groups in the past and everyone has always enjoyed it. I've also been for my birthday and they do a birthday treat which is nice! The food is good not great. The service is lacking. I would have gone 4+ stars had the service been any better. We did not wait for a table but we waited 70 minutes for our food after ordering. Even the wait staff of other tables looked confused as to how a family of four had waited so long. No consolation offered. If you're going to charge 5 star sushi prices like Haruno you better deliver more then food eventually: you need to deliver the experience as well. read more

We came here around 5:30pm on a Saturday and to our surprise, it was very empty for dinner hour; only 2 party of couples were seated inside.. not that I was complaining then. Our waiter seated us, took our drink order & brought our drinks to us 15 minutes after. I don't know long it take others to get 3 hot teas but I don't think it takes 15 minute to pop 3 tea bags in a cup with hot water.. BUT, proceeded on with a happy mind, believing that it'll be different with the chefs. I was wrong again. Put our orders in & the wait-game began. We waited, waited, and waited! (For what feels like FOREVER.) After 30 minute, I finally got my appretizer: Octopus Seaweed Salad. After another 10 minute goes by, our dishes started to come in one by one & that was the worst part! While my friend & I had our dishes, my sister sat there and watch us eat as she waited for her dishes. FINALLY after some time passes, one of her sushi roll came through!! She was so excited to eat it but fell into disappointment as it was served cold when it's suppose to be "deep fried." Her second order took another 20 minute & it was only EEL NIGIRI!? 2 pieces of Eel nigiri took 20 minute?!?! Ugh. SLOWEST SERVICE ever, considering that it was SUPER empty & also saw three chef in the sushi kitchen? So I don't understand the slow service on their end. By the time we left the restaurant, it was already nearing 8. -_-" I want to give Umi a good review for the one sushi roll I ordered but the slow service really got to me at the end of dining. Needed a sushi fix on xmas eve and Umi fit the bill perfectly. Called in a carry out order of gyoza and a philly roll. It was ready in ten min fast fresh and boy was it good. They are also open xmas day if you are wanting some great tasting sushi. The staff is friendly, large dining room with a full service bar. There are alot of sushi places in town this by far one of the better ones. Like I said cant beat a place thats open on xmas, people need sushi then too. read more

We were treated very poorly. I reserved a table for 8 people for my husband's birthday. Our reservation was at 5:00 pm on a Saturday. Around 6:15 pm or so someone told us they had another reservation at 6:30 and those people had arrived early and they needed our table. They essentially asked us to leave. There was an empty table beside us which was the same size and a couple of smaller ones. Unless 30 people were showing up...there was no need to kick us out. On top of that, when our checks came they had already added 18% gratuity....so we had no control over how much we wanted to tip. We spent a lot of money on food and drinks and they kicked us out. Okay so this will probably be the most gushed over review I will ever give in my life. This place is AMAZING! Everything from start to finish is utterly beautiful and amazing. The only thing that I wish they would implement is a tatami floor with a low table and some kind of tea offering before or after your meal. That In my opinion would make this place purely epic. Besides all that forced nit picking for nit picking sake, You have to come here. Not because the food is fantastic but because the service here is A freaking plus. I wish to god I got the name of our sever but I forgot it. If you want to seek him out he's the gorgeous one that will make most men question their sexuality. Seriously. ANYWAYS.... His service was above and beyond. He gave awesome recommendations, he knew the menu, he wasn't your typical "hovering server" he was just perfect. When you enter through those doors you are greeted with a warm smile. The love in the air is easy to catch on to. Most sushi places I go to it feels like the servers and cooks are judging you when they speak their language directly in front of you, but here I get the sense of pride. Now, I don't speak Japanese but I do speak body language. And their body language says it all. It screams welcome home. This is the first review I have ever written and for good reason. I took my fiancé here for our 5 year anniversary and wanted some quality sushi. Instead we got a plate full of sushi that was absolutely smothered in sauce. By far the soggiest sushi I have ever eaten. And the worst part is it was also the most expensive. We paid 60$ for a few rolls and an appetizer and when I complained to the waitress as politely as I could she walked away to avoid us. Had a great experience at Umi yesterday and had to come on and rave just a bit. First off, the atmosphere is pleasant, enjoyable and not forced. I felt comfortable the moment we sat down. Then it was time for the main event, the food! I, of course, went with some sushi options for my lunch and my lady friend had the teriyaki chicken lunch. Both meals were spot on good and prepared well. My sushi (the kissy kissy roll and some tuna nigiri) was flavorful and beautiful! The sides on my lady friends plate were also excellent! My husband and I have a tradition of sushi for Valentines Day. We absolutely love Nakato but they don't do lunch hours. So this year we decided to give Umi a try. We have found a NEW favorite sushi place!! The inside is beautifully decorated, it felt fancy but in a relaxed way. We did have our youngest (11 months) with us, they have high chairs and were friendly with him. We ordered the valentines special which was 4 rolls that you selected from a group of rolls. We got the Kissy Kissy, Geisha, Touchdown, and Oh Yeah rolls. We liked the Geisha and Touchdown rolls the best. We also ordered a shrimp appetizer called Shumai, it had an interesting texture that I wasn't sure about but a wonderful taste that made me want more. Our meal came with soup and salad which were both wonderful. I can't wait to go back and try some of their other rolls and maybe next time I'll have room to try the tempura ice cream!! read more

Just left this place. Have eaten here before but won't be back after tonight! The rolls were delicious and it went straight downhill from there. I had the veggie dinner, but it was not "veggie", it was a few noodles and huge chunks of onions, two tiny brocolli florets, a few pieces of carrot, ONE mushroom and ONE tiny piece of zucchini. When I told the waiter he just said " sometimes it just comes out that way ". My husband had the scallops, I love scallops! When his plate arrived, he offered me one......I couldn't get up from the table quick enough, headed to the bathroom to spit it out, it was off and I told him if he ate them he was most likely going to get sick.
