I've eaten at Marugame on Sawtelle many times, and if you're craving udon, this is the place. For me, Marugame has the best udon -- consistently flavorful, perfectly chewy, and always satisfying. I've tried other udon spots, but nothing compares to theirs. It's simply the most delicious. If you want a reliable, comforting bowl of udon, Marugame never disappoints.

Food: - Freshly made udon at a good price! - Kake udon: Light broth with udon noodles - Nikutama: broth is more of a dipping sauce, with stronger saltier flavors, beef is tender but a little fatty; poached egg is delicious, udon noodles have QQ texture and bounce Ambiance: - plenty of seating inside and outside the restaurant - cafeteria style: order udon at the counter and walk through the line to pick up any tempura then finish at the cashier

Originally I was not a big fan of Udon. It grew on me after I had it for a couple times. Ordered classic dashi udon with beef and piece of egg. Udon was fresh and meat was tender. I went there on off peak hour so not a lot of people there. Plenty of tables and clean inside.

I've been to this location 15-20 times over the past 7 years, and it has always been a consistent spot for a quick meal. However, during my most recent visit in April 2026 the regular portion size has become so much smaller, for the same price. Basically the size of my hand and I have small hands (see photo)! I remember the bowls being bigger, and I'd never think about ordering a large size because the regular was plenty for me, but now the udon portion is barely enough to make me feel full. A bit disappointing and honestly makes me less enticed to go back.

Delicious food. Quick service. Friendly staff. Reasonable price. Good ambiance. Worth revisiting.

4/10 was cold and probably sitting out too long.

Amazing! But not all amazing... The udon was amazing! Tastes of a value which costs twice of what I paid so score there! But the other accompaniment food was almost horrendous. The chicken was cold, tough, and unpleasant overall. Don't recommend it. The gyoza was cold and also taste like it's been sitting. I think as whole the food experience is a mixed bag but just come here for the udon and Maybe the other stuff if you know it is fresh. Otherwise the other stuff is likely sitting out for longer than it should be. Definitely coming back but only for udon!

Although I am DEVASTATED that the fish cake tempura is no longer available, Marugame Udon remains a solid choice for a comfort meal. I used to come here a lot during my college days, and the line would be out the door. However, on this Monday night, I was able to waltz right in. Ambiance is casual and quick. In addition to udon, they also have other options such as tendon and curry, but I've only ever gotten the nikutama udon. A regular size is enough for me because I always go overboard with the tempura. After you order your bowl of udon (or whatever you got), the tempura are laid out for you to grab. Be careful, although each piece is only around $2, they stack up quick if you have hungry eyes (like me). My favorite piece used to be the fish cake tempura, but it's no longer there. I live down in OC, so I would usually go to the South Coast Plaza location, which also didn't have it. I thought that the Sawtelle location might still have it, but the girl at the front said they discontinued it over the summer (so sad!) please please please bring it back. But aside from that, the imitation crab tempura was very good and similar. The taste is the same as the fish cake, but the texture is different. Stringier instead of condensed and solid. My bowl with 4 pieces of tempura cost around $25. It'll be cheaper, obviously, if you don't take as much tempura. But in my opinion, the tempura is the best part. There's so many fun ways to eat it. On its own, it's slightly crisp. Dipping it in tempura sauce makes it a little sweet. And letting it soak in your udon broth gives you a satisfying, soggy, soup filled bite. The udon itself is decent. If you've never been, it's worth a visit, and even if you have, Marugame is a solid choice.

love marugame! the vegan tantan is always solid, but i do wish they would introduce more vegetarian options!! perfect if you're looking for a quick bite to eat that's still delicious

Casual cafeteria-style chain serving udon and tempura, perfect for larger groups with different tastes. 4/5 Beef tomatama curry udon (seasonal) - Not spicy at all! The thin beef slices, stewed tomato, and egg ribbons pair wonderfully with the fresh udon. Reminded me of Chinese tomato egg stir-fry. I usually skip the tempura as the regular bowls are a substantial meal, but I am a sucker for the shrimp and veggie tempura. Students can also receive 15% off with their ID.

Basically, the order process is that you tell them what number you want and then you grab tempura and other add-ons. 24, Beef, tomato, egg: 9/10 5, Creamy tonkatsu chashu: 7/10 (chashu tasted weird) in terms of quality 1. mitsuwa 2. marugame 3. yoshinoya in terms of seating/atmosphere: It was very clean and they had seating both indoors/outdoors. It felt very ambient and I liked the water/sauces station they provided.

Marugame is always solid, but I feel like the menu has changed a lot over time, and I miss the old tonkotsu udon. Nowadays, I think the $10 deal with kake or bk and tempura is more worth it than the other options. The line is also always long in Sawtelle, but it goes fast and there's always seating inside. For a parking hack, park at the Marshalls and get validated there for 24 hrs and walk over!

Marugame Udon offers a good variety of broths, sauces, and toppings, making it easy to customize. Fried chicken and udon was good. Lines can get long.

Ask the Community - Marugame Udon

Can you bring outside food and drink?

You can sneak it in. There's also an patio seating area that you also eat at if you plan on bringing outside food.

I don't see the uni udon people are mentioning. Do they still have that here?

Nope. Haven't seen it offered in a long time.

    Do they take reservations?

    No reservations

I'm allergic to peanuts - is there anything with peanuts in it?

Do any of the broths contain MSG?

    Do you still take Bruincard?

I believe they do. There is a sticker at the counter saying we accent bruin card

Does the broth contain MSG? Are there vegan options? Thank you!

Is there dairy in any of the food (butter/milk)?

I don't think so unless your dish has some porched egg(onsen egg) in your udon. Good part is it's like the cafeteria style that you can request the staff members on site that you don't any of that. Udon noodles are home made and have no dairy food.

Does the tempura batter have egg in it?

Tempura batter is normally made with egg.

I do not eat beef and pork, but chicken and seafood is fine. Do any of the udons chicken broth based?

Some dashis are fish based but I'm not sure if theirs is. I think even their curry chicken udon is beef based. It is probably best if you call the restaurant and ask to be 100% sure! I wouldn't go off anyone else's opinion unless the restaurant… Read more

    What are the vegan options?

They have a Japanese mountain vegetable udon that is vegan I believe, but I would confirm with them on the broth.

    Is outdoor dining open again?

Yes! They have two tables out front and a few more in the alleyway to the left of the restaurant.

Are there any gluten free noodle options?

Unfortunately, no. I believe the broth is made from soy sauce as well (as opposed to tamari).

Is this location closed? They were closed last Saturday.

They are remodeling and will reopen after Thanksgiving.

What is the difference between the nikutama beef curry and the other beef curry udon?

The curry nikutama udon is a curry based soup that has beef in it, and is topped with more beef and an onsen egg (poached egg). It is similar to the regular nikutama, only instead of the kake sauce base, it is curry. The curry beef udon is just the… Read more

    Do you have inaniwa noodle?

No, the noodles made here are Sanuki style udon.

    Are you open tomorrow?

    Yes

    Open on Thanksgiving Day?

    Yes

What sort of broth is it?

Hi there Meghan! Thank you for your question. Our broth (Kake-dashi) is created each day by hand. We create the stock by using fish, such as Sardine, Mackerel, and Bonito. We also add Japanese Kelp and Soy Sauce to further balance the flavor. We… Read more

Is the soup vegetarian for the original udon?

Unfortunately not. I've asked and the only true vegetarian item on the main menu is the tofu salad.

First visit to Emporium Thai and I already know this won't be my last…read more I walked in solo with a tight window between shows, which meant I had to be strategic. No leftovers, no over-ordering... a true test of discipline at a place like this. Started with a Thai iced tea that hit exactly right. Balanced, not overly sweet, and generously poured. Service throughout the meal was excellent. Attentive without hovering, and the pacing was spot on. I never felt rushed, which is rare when you're clearly on a clock. For my appetizer, I went with the Phuket wings. As someone who takes wings seriously, I can say these stood out. Crispy, flavorful, and coated in a Southern Thai curry sauce I hadn't experienced before. Rich, slightly sweet, with a depth that kept me going back for "just one more." For the main, I took the server's recommendation and ordered the Thai beef salad to balance things out. Smart call. The dressing leaned creamier than what I usually expect, but it worked. Bright, flavorful, and layered. I'll be honest, I couldn't quite finish it, but the beef didn't stand a chance. Every last bite. Dessert sealed the deal. The mango sticky rice, now famously known as the Cardi B Mango Sticky Rice, lived up to the hype. Perfectly ripe mango, warm sticky rice, and that coconut sauce tying it all together. Simple, classic, and done right. The space itself tells a story. Walls lined with photos of the owner alongside celebrities from all over. But what stood out more than the photos was the man himself. He made his way around the room, greeting guests, checking in, bringing real warmth to the experience. No hierarchy, no pretense. Everyone gets treated like they belong. Twenty-six years in and I'm just now discovering this place? Better late than never. Next time, I'm bringing a group and ordering everything family style. That's the move.

We all gobbled up 2+ plates each and had a ton of leftovers. They definitely do not skimp on portions when ordering catering. All of the food tasted fresh and flavorful. You could taste all of the spices and seasonings well while not having to get through a ton of grease and oil. I really think they nailed the balance of everything in all of the dishes. If I did have one minor gripe, I will say that this stuff might not travel the absolute best. I'm not completely sure how much time passed between it getting piked up and consumed, but a lot of the items, especially those with noodles, were sticking together when trying to serve which means if you wanted a small portion...you got a big one. I know that's more on us for not eating right away, but I would've also hoped that with a catering order they would have accounted for this a bit more. In all, Emporium Thai was a fantastic lunch to break up a long business meeting. I absolutely cannot wait to go to the actual restaurant and try their dishes fresh out of the kitchen (& whenever I do find myself there I will update my review accordingly.

No. But if you're a 'by the books' pho eater, you're going to notice that right away & might have your own opinions based off that choice. As far as the broth goes, which is how I judge pho, it's good. It's not great, but it's good. I think it could use a little longer time simmering to really build some richer flavor. The broth is light which I appreciate, but I feel like it didn't offer the complex flavor profile other Vietnamese restaurants I have been to offer. Staff was friendly and helpful. Went early to see if anything opened or if walk-in would be faster, surprisingly they actually had something come available sooner. We opted to sit inside and loved the ambiance. Food - amazing! I read reviews first and watched a couple IG videos so I knew a general idea of what we wanted to order. Glad the server suggested the orange chicken over the walnut shrimp when we were debating it. Chil wontons, absolutely a must get, different from DTF, not crazy spicy but full of flavor and richness. XO fatty noodles, perfect chewiness on the rolled noodles and the flavors were well balanced, we enjoyed them with a little chili paste and the orange chicken as the protein. Orange chicken, soooo much more flavorful than your average Panda Express orange chicken, good sized nuggets of chicken that were crispy and tender at the same time, and the zest livened it up. BBQ pork shank, our server did warn us it's not the easiest to eat, but it's worth it, hard to see cutting it off the bone because it was so dimly lite in the restaurant and your hands will get sticky but once you get chunks off the bone and your bao bun built it's delicious especially when you get the lacquered crispy skin yummm! Only skip for the night was the mango sticky rice. Much rather would've spend $8 on something else. The mango was tart/sour. The sticky rice was too wet and mushy. It was a pass for both of us. When asked about dishes and proportions, she was very knowledgeable and honest. Food: (4.5/5) We ordered the Mapo Tofu and Meizhou Special Fried Rice with chicken. The food came out within 10 minutes and the portions, as I saw on previous reviews, were generous enough for us to share and be full. The Mapo Tofu came out on a hot ceramic bowl. It wasn't as spicy as I thought, not overly spicy but just enough where you get that numbing kind of sensation in your mouth that leaves you wanting more. The beef wasn't like the ground beef you see in other mapo tofu, but more of chunkier pieces which I wasn't a big fan of as it didn't seem spread evenly. The Meizhou Special Fried Rice with chicken was probably one of the best fried rice dishes I've ever had. You can tell it was made from a wok and the flavors were just incredible. The chicken seemed to have been friend separately and added on top afterwards but the saltiness of the chicken didn't take away from the fried rice at all. Instead, it added to the flavor and made it all so enjoyable. For the ultimate experience, I'd recommend eating both together to maximize your palette!

The space feels worn -- menus tattered, décor dated, the whole interior overdue for a refresh. For a restaurant positioning itself at the higher end of Chinese dining, Meizhou Dongpo is sleeping on the finer details. No complimentary tea service, and rather than offering a pot for the table, they serve individual tea by the mug -- a comically oversized Western mug at that. Chopsticks arrive without spoons, and when you ask for one, you get silverware instead of the porcelain you'd expect at Chinese restaurant. The Peking duck accoutrements came with a little plastic spoon on the tray. Small things, but they add up.The fried rice was a letdown too and looked nothing like the menu photo. Spots like Din Tai Fung and Lunasia Signature are operating at a different level and the gap shows. Meizhou Dongpo has the bones of a great Chinese restaurant. The duck alone proves it. But until they invest in the experience around the food, it's hard to recommend at this price point.
