If you are looking for authentic Japanese home cooking style restaurant, this is the spot. Sushi is NOT ALL ABOUT Japanese food. And this place serves all the lovely home cooking style Japanese dishes. Grilled fish, noodle soup, stir fried vegetables, Japanese curry... Their service is friendly and precise. And obviously, their sushi is awesome as well. Highly recommend this Japanese restaurant. Make a reservation, because it is always packed!
The restaurant is in the strip mall just west of University Drive and east of Pine Island Road on the north side of Sunrise Boulevard. It's in the Publix shopping center along with a lot of other eateries. There is plenty of parking but it is a very packed strip mall. The restaurant itself is small. I didn't take note of the exact number of seats but it doesn't hold a large amount of people. It's very plain. Our server was very attentive and asked questions about my raw-onion allergy to make sure all the dishes were safe for me. We had a party of 4. We ordered the smelt fish and skewered squid appetizers; the scallops and mushrooms and the pork, tofu, and bitter melon meals. The entrees were not accompanied by rice. It was $4 for a small serving. (What Asian restaurant doesn't offer rice with its meals?) We also got three sushis: the ceviche, the fantasy, and the crunchy spicy tuna (without raw scallions). The smelt was good, but they were so tiny (the size of a pinkie but not as thick). My Chinese mom often fried smelt when I was growing up and they were small but at least the size of a Sharpie marker. The squid was decent and even better with a squeeze of fresh lemon. The scallops and mushrooms dish was divine. It was a favorite at the table. In the other entree, the pork was scarce, the tofu was crumbly, and the bitter melon was the most bitter I have ever tasted. The three sushis were a hit. The ceviche had a wonderful cilantro flavor and melted in your mouth. The crunchy spicy tuna had tempura flakes and a soft spicy tuna. The fantasy had shrimp tempura, avocado, and some of the same crunchy spicy tuna. All these were topped with teeny weeny crunchy rice balls that my daughter and I loved. Two appetizers, 2 entrees, 3 sushi rolls, tax, and tip totaled about $113.
Love that this place is open on Christmas Eve! We thought it would be super busy, but we were still able to call in like 30 min beforehand to make a reservation as we got on our way. The menu here is EXTENSIVE. A bad thing if you're not a big decision maker, but a great thing if you just want to order a bunch of random dishes for the table and try a bit of everything. I feel like the entrees are pretty fairly prices, but the appetizers seemed to be on the expensive side. Some stand outs for me were the Hokke fish, which was not dry at all and came with a delicious dipping sauce (although you have to pick out the bones yourself) and the Kabocha tempura. I would get the agedashi tofu again too, but I would want to eat it faster because if you let it sit in the sauce, the crispy outside gets all gummy. Whereas I don't think I would order the crispy shrimp with mayo again. It wasn't necessarily bad, but just not worth it and didn't really leave much of an impression on me when there were other things to be eaten. I also thought the kake udon was okay. The broth was just different than what I had expected - it was more like sour. The volcano roll itself was kinda eh but I liked the topping a lot.
While aimlessly looking for a dinner spot we ran into this location. It was a Saturday evening and we were asked if we had a reservation which we did not. However, there were a few open tables so we were sat immediately. This restaurant serve plates and a family style so they are most of them meant for sharing . They do also have daily specials rating on a board which they put in front of your table. Our server gave several recommendation and she was super sweet and made modifications requested. I had the seafood ceviche to start which tasted so fresh and it was absolutely delicious. We shared the Japanese fried chicken which was steaming hot but so tender and juicy. For mains we had a sushi roll and the seafood ramen with udon noodles as requested. Everything we had tasted fresh and was absolutely delicious. For dessert we ordered the fried cheesecake which was ok. We did notice that most of the patrons that came were Japanese or from some Asian country which is how you know the place is legit. 100% recommend
Maybe I ordered the wrong things, but the Sashimi and Seafood Vegetable Hotpot were subpar. Presentation of the Sashimi Combo B was nice, but something tasted off about the sashimi. The seafood vegetable hotpot had a freezer burn taste. The eggplant nibitashi that was on the specials board; however, was very good. Cool, slightly tart, and a natural creaminess from the eggplant itself. Service was good, but the 2 waitresses were definitely running around taking in-person orders, on the phone for to-go orders, and running drinks/food to the 10+ tables this busy night - so it took quite a while to get our check from when we finished our meal.
I've been here several times and it's become my favorite Japanese Izakaya type restaurant in Greater Fort Lauderdale. It's a small, casual space in a suburban shopping corner with loads of free parking. Marumi serves excellent sushi but the real unique standout is the rest of the large and varied menu. The sandwich-board specials menu doesn't change daily, but where else does a restaurant offer a variety of whole fish priced by the pound and cooked 3 different ways? Izakaya restaurants offer many shareable small tapas-like dishes. Sharing almost everything is the way to go here. (Don't share your soups. The Clear Mushroom Soup is deceptively deep with earthy mushroom flavors, and many of us order 2 bowls for ourselves!) The 5 Live Oysters are really super fresh on the half shell. The crunchy Wasabi Octopus will open up your nasal passages. The Crispy Needle Fish is also a great shareable appetizer. Eat the whole tiny fish, bones and all. Without a doubt, my favorite must-try recommendation is the Angel Hair Pasta with Uni and Ikura. I'm not even a big fan of uni (sea urchin), but this dish is fantastic. Rich buttery taste with Ikura (fish roe) to add a pop of seafood flavor, and a dab of wasabi for heat. Divine! There are so many menu items you can return 8 times and still have items you haven't tried but want to. Service has always been friendly and prompt. Alcohol is the weak point with room for improvement. The sake is very good, but there should be a larger variety at different sizes and price points. Ditto draft and bottled Japanese beer. The weakest link is the cheap Australian wines that do not do the food justice at all. Hopefully they can get help with that and expand their selection. Even with its weak points, Marumi is a fine and fun adventure in ethnic gastronomy, especially for around these parts.
I've eaten here twice so far. I love how their menu is creative and a little experimental. I have liked the sushi rolls I've tried so far. (No pics, sorry) I can't say I loved them, but I want to try more. Their specials have sounded good too. However, I'm disappointed in the fried cheesecake. Before ordering, I asked what it's like because the name is Fried Cheesecake Rolls (1 pictured but it comes with 4). The waitress didn't know how to answer my question so I just got it. I was expecting tempura cheesecake like most Japanese restaurants. Be aware: it's NOT tempura. These are fried rolls like avocado rolls or similar. You can tell from the shape in the picture. Inside, they were only about 1/4-1/3 full of cheesecake. The rest was empty space. I'm sure frying them, the cheesecake melts out somewhat. Not a lot was left. And it was strongly banana flavored! It didn't say banana cheesecake. I assumed it would be plain cheesecake. So honestly, the cheesecake filling tasted kinda like mushy bananas with a slight cheesecake texture as far as creaminess. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't what I wanted. I would say this dessert is only semi-successful. I'll still return for sushi.
I really like this restaurant. It's been years since i used to meet a girlfriend who lived nearby here for dinner. Having been here often way back when, I was surprised I hadn't done a review. But I guess it was before I was a yelp elite and didn't write reviews as much as I do now. We were joining two other couples for dinner. And I was thrilled when they selected this location. As we were a party of six and it was a Saturday night, they'd made reservations. They were packed! I'd highly recommend reservations for quick seating. This is one of the more authentic Asian restaurants. They have lots of items that the standard Japanese restaurant do not carry. In addition to their extensive regular menu, they always have a whiteboard with daily specials. Try to get something from this board, if you are a bit adventurous. We ordered two different fish dishes from the board -- a crispy needlefish (tiny whole fried fish) and a dish called kisu fish tempura. I had to google the "kisu" to find out what it was. Both fishes were delicious. The kisu had tail on but no heads. The crispy needlefish reminded me of fried baby smelts. In addition, my husband got some salmon sashimi. So fresh! And I ordered a shrimp and eggplant in miso sauce dish that was very very good. Our friends got an assortment of dishes from crispy bok choy to ramen; vegetable tempura to gyoza; enoki mushrooms with bacon; and a sushi roll. The only negatives I can recall was a bit too much mayonnaise topping on one of the sushi rolls. This is a unique restaurant to south Florida. And I'm so glad we got to try it again. Now if only they were closer to my residence as I'd be here much much more often. And I'm planning on returning soon.
A Japanese restaurant that offers a very large and wide variety of items (from sushi, to curry, to hotpot, to ramen and more). There's also a separate menu that lists daily specials, so you'll never be lacking in choices to choose from. Service is great, the lighting is dim at night to give visitors a late-night comfortable meal (they close at 1am!) I would come here due to regularly craving their uni pasta (keeping in mind this is MP). The uni pasta is definitely my favorite dish: So soft, buttery and when you mix the uni with the Ikura (fish eggs) and angel hair pasta, you taste a dish of utter perfection. Occasionally I'll stop by for a quick udon soup, which is very comforting to eat at night. Not pictured - their grouper head is very flavorful and freshly served.
Came here around 630 pm on a Monday. Its on a big shopping plaza with Ross, Five below and some other stores and restaurants. I decided this would be the day that I tried a fried sushi burrito that i had been seeing on tiktok. Lol! It was pretty busy inside. Families were there enjoying dinner. It was my first time. I was able to place a quick take out order. Waited about 15 minutes. Food dlcame with eel sauce and I had to pay $.50 for spicy mayo. I got the Salmon and Cream cheese roll. Once I opened my m food , I realized that I forgot to tell them not to cut it. But Whatever. That was my fault. Roll tasted good. I just feel like it could've been fried more. As usual Marumi always supersedes my tast buds. My husband and I have been coming here for 16 years and I can consistency is so refreshing. Everything is always fresh and certain items are based on availability. Newest recommendations if available on their menu is the Cuttle fish, Kisu fish, Eggplant shrimp miso and Striped Bass carppachio. read more
Dining at Marumi Sushi for tonight's dinner made me wonder why I haven't tried this place sooner. My girlfriend and I were seated within seconds of entering the restaurant, the server we had today was prompt and efficient, and the booth was spacious and comfy enough for two. Marumi Sushi has a wide variety of menu to choose from sushi to cooked food from the kitchen. We ordered different appetizers, small portioned food, some ramen and seafood & veggies hotpot. They literally have everything on the menu even the ones I didn't know I was craving for until I saw them on the menu. My girlfriend loves uni (sea urchin) so we ordered two pieces (1 pc per order) at a reasonable price. It was good for the price of ($14.50 may change due to market fluctuation). It wasn't Japanese uni, it looked and tasted like the ones from California. Nonetheless, it was good, especially with uni being scarce temporarily. We also tried their grilled shishito peppers (nice mini app to snack on), fried tofu with chicken sauce (very hot inside so be careful, but it was tasty and light enough to enjoy other dishes), spicy salmon roll wrapped in soy paper (very simply roll and tasty, you don't get tired of it after eating couple pieces), nato beans and rice with Ikura and quail eggs (tasted little blend but couldn't complain for the portion and quality), seafood hotpot (will satiate your hotpot craving until next time, and Michelle ramen (which was mediocre at best). I got the impression that the place is neat and well kept. I will definitely be going back for the second and third time. There are plenty of free parking spaces in the plaza. I heard so many good things about this place mostly the uni pasta! We went on a Saturday night very busy, if you are a bigger party than 4 I recommend you call and make a reservation. The staff was amazing and very attentive. Since then I've been there over 5 times, they do not disappoint!! The food is always consistent and so delicious. I got the eggplant miso cheese w/ seafood, so flavorful and the cheese was just perfect. I did not know what garlic stem was, it's similar to string beans but more crunchy but when we order the garlic stem with beef it was a perfect stir fry dish, definitely recommend! My go to entrees has go to be the mentaiko (spicy cod roe) pasta wow amazing! It has a bit of kick of spice but so delicious, I would recommend this if you're not a big fan of the uni pasta. I am not that big of a curry eater, but their chicken curry with egg was so smooth, it does not contain any dairy. Every item is packed with food, and the price is great. I love love this place! Totally recommend if you're ever in the area! read more

The food is always good. I've been here so many times and I am addicted. Everything is so fresh and delicious. I love that the specials have variety, I always get to try something "unique" like monk fish liver which 1 was delicious and 2 I've never seen on a menu anywhere else. The staff is always AMAZING and so helpful and friendly. Definitely one of my favorite places to go to. read more

Open from 5pm - 1:30AM daily, Marumi gots the sushi, sashimi, wasabi and the uni !! My siblings & cousins love coming here for their uni pasta. A 30-40$ dish that I feel is an acquired taste LOL because I could not enjoy it (sorry) . But if you like sea urchins and things that look like mini bobas (fish) all you!! The other pasta was more Americanized a little kick and Parmesan cheese, so it was more bearable. Aside from that, I come here to mostly vibe have a quick beer and for the other menu items. For instance, the sashimi platter, which everything was good besides the white fish. The big oysters cut into smaller pieces which was a fan fave especially with that sauce, and the fish jerky which was bomb! Service was great. Place is pricey but that's what you pay for quality. read more
Food was incredibly tasty. Maybe it's just me but It's the closest to authentic Japanese food I've had in awhile. It doesn't try to be that fusion with Thai, or Chinese food that you'll find most Japanese food in. It's an all Japanese menu with workers and decor to match Service was great! Always my go to for authentic Japanese food. Food is always consistent. I love the Uni and ikura Angel hair pasta. Uni is so fresh always. Mixed with the pasta, it tastes like butter. My husband loves the eggplant with miso cheese. That's his go to. He has to order it every time he comes. Weekends can get packed. They don't take reservations so it's first come first serve. They have a couple outdoor seating tables now which is nice when the weather is nice. They have multiple TV's inside so you have some type of entertainment. Other than that, it's usually a quiet ambiance inside. Would definitely recommend for people to go. read more
If you haven't had uni pasta, this is your sign to come to Marumi and order it. I wouldn't have found this spot if it wasn't for my cousin being obsessed with the dish and it lived up to the hype! With that being said, it usually sells at market price of the uni and could get pretty expensive. The staff will let you know how much it is before ordering it so you can gauge if it's worth it to you, but I think it totally is. Funny enough, I'm not a huge uni fan but when it comes with a creamy sauce on top of pasta, it was a complete game-changer. Of course, they offer an array of different dishes and classic Japanese cuisine. From natto to onigiri, you can find what you're craving here. My last visit, I ended up ordering onigiri because I honestly have to everytime I see it on a menu. It was pretty good but, as expected, came with more rice than filling. Probably wouldn't order again unless I was craving something carb heavy. The inside is cozy and this restaurant is situated in a plaza with tons of parking outside plus a good amount of seating that I'm sure gets packed when there's a dinner rush. read more

This was my 1st visit even though I live less than 2 miles from this place. It is located in a basic shopping plaza with plenty of parking. There are a few tables outside and table or booths inside. Just outside the door is a dry-erase board with the current specials with prices and a 2nd dry erase board mounted inside with the sushi and sashimi offerings with prices. I went solo at opening on a Friday and was greeted by a hostess who asked if I had a reservation, and if not, I would have to be done eating in 1 hour. I assured her that I understood but felt it was a little rude since only 1 other table was occupied, and when I was done, there was still about 40% of the restaurant not occupied. I also felt a little off put, as I was only given the standard menu when other tables got to look at the special board that was brought to their tables. Service was good though not very friendly. The food was fresh, and it was reasonably priced. I actually felt that some of the things I ordered were better after it sat on the plate for a few minutes and not eaten immediately. I also felt that most of what I ordered would be very good for sharing. I started with the fish jerky. It came out piping hot, and when I let it cool, it was actually much crisper, and the japanese mayo sauce was nice to dip it into. The big oyster was not very big, but big enough to cut into 4-5 small pieces. It sat in a fermented marinade of brown fish sauce. The Crispy Bok choy was delicious and had a nice Japanese salt on it. I ordered the Calamari "hot hot" salad. The spice level was minimal from the sliced chili peppers. It would have been hotter if the chilis were marinating in the dressing. The Calamari was fresh, and the sliced cabbages and dark leafy greens were very fresh, but it was better the next day after it wilted from the vinegar dressing. I really felt that if they knew you as a "regular" diner, then you were treated much better, but for me, I am not sure I will return so quickly as there was no wow factor for me at this place. read more
Small hole in the wall spot but definitely did not disappoint. Walked in a on Friday night with no reservation and was told they were packed for the rest of the night. We scooped up spots at the bar thankfully with no wait. The fish is super fresh, and came out quick for how busy it was. We had to try to toro nigiri set along with some of the smaller shareable items. Would definitely return again for quality sushi and Japanese dishes. read more
Came here for the first time with a friend who is a regular. Very authentic Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu of sushi, ramen and seafood. Their specials menu was huge. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. I tried the miso soup ($3.00) and tuna cilantro roll ($8.00). Both were fresh and flavorful. Seemed to be lots of locals when we were there. Will definitely return to try more items. read more
I don't know if I'd call or authentic, because I'm not sure what an "authentic" Japanese restaurant is like. However, it IS different, kind of confusing, but very good. It's not very big, but our group of six had a reservation for 7PM on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly, and provided with 4 copies of their very extensive menu (more on that in a few), and they rolled over an easel with a large whiteboard (thanks to Julie F. for the photo!), listing the many specials. The menu had many sections, each listing a category; sushi, ramen, teriyaki, rice & noodles, appetizers, soup, etc., etc. it was huge, and each section had many selections to choose from. The daily specials were handwritten, in both English and Japanese, along with their prices. The staff, although seemingly a bit harried, did not hesitate to answer questions about what some the more confusingly labeled items were. Things like enoki-bacon, crispy needle-fish (delicious by the way), and umezu octopus. We tried some new (to us anyway) items, as well as some old standbys. All dishes are brought out as soon as they are ready, and that allowed us to share some items with our dinner-mates while other items were still being prepared. As more plates were brought out, the empties were whisked away. I think most of us enjoyed our dinners. Some of the less adventurous amongst us were a bit less happy. I would enjoy going back, but my wife will need to select from the more familiar items on the menu. read more
Um what an amateur Yelper I was before. Marumi was absolutely amazing. Although we waited for about an hour on a Friday night around 8, that was mainly our fault. We really came for the uni pasta that I had saw on the menu the last time I was here & then a friend of ours posted it on social media and that's all it took for me to come. The uni pasta was everything you could think uni pasta would taste like. It's actually Uni and Ikura angel pasta, and personally too much Ikura for me but the uni was A1. We had the age tofu, which was not pictured but definitely a must-order. We tried the Special Needle Fish, which I could eat as a snack if it came in a bag. The shishito peppers were yummy and some even had a kick! And the grilled squid is a classic. Definitely not your average Japanese but worth the experience. read more
