Maruyama is such a hidden gem when it comes to a nursery. From tons of plants to choose from to providing the best soil to their bonsai trees, this business does not take shortcuts! Not only are there a bunch of plants to choose from, the owners there are super kind and helpful! I went to buy bonsai trees for my mom's birthday and there were tons of options. I asked the lady for advice and she was able to help me narrow down which plants were best indoor, which were best outdoor, and how much they were. As others stated, prices aren't listed so you have to ask the owner how much the plants are, but they are fairly priced in my opinion. The owner was also helpful when it came to giving advice on how often to water the plants, where they should stay to get the best light, and answered all our questions. I ended up getting a ficus (left) and a juniper (right). When our ficus wasn't doing so well, we brought it back into the nursery hoping for answers on how we could better take care of it or plants like it in the future. Not only was she able to examine it, trimmed it, and showed us how to water it, she even went ahead and repotted a new one for us! We weren't expecting to even get a new ficus, but she went out of her way to find us another ficus, teach us how to take better care of it. This is one of the best shops I've ever been to as they truly care about their plants and their customers. We were just expecting to receive advice on how our ficus was dying and we ended up getting a new plant to start our journey again. No matter if you're a beginner or an expert, definitely give this place a go for some good service from the owners and some pretty plants! read more

Every city should be so lucky as to have a Bonsai Nursery like Maruyama. They have an incredible collection of trees at very fair prices. They also sell Bonsai soil for much less than Any other dealer. They have specialty bonsai, soil (for Azeleas) and bonsai pots as well. Well, some of the major specimens may not be for sale. They do have very large trees for sale that are one of a kind. Ask them what you're looking for and they may be able to find it. The Sacramento community is lucky to have this Nursery. This is a great little spot! There are so many varieties of bonsais to choose from. They do kind of have odd hours though. They have a tons of different kinds and different sizes of bonsai. I ended up with a gingko bonsai tree. The people are super nice and knowledgeable. I ended up also buying some akadama soil for my aroids - I mix it in with with my other soil accoutrements. They even offered us little tangerines and provided us with tips what water to use on our plants. They have a large selection of bonsai starts, potted plants, and bonsais. Conveniently located off of Blair Avenue & Belleau Wood Ln, just West of Freeport Blvd, Maruyama Bonsai Nursery is Sacramento's premium Bonsai nursery! For the Bonsai enthusiast, finding a store that has the gear you need to care for your Bonsai tree/plant can be difficult. Personally speaking, I was limited to purchasing supplies online through retailers, such as Amazon & Etsy, due to being unaware of any local Bonsai nurseries nearby. This was frustrating because when choosing Bonsai one must be able to inspect the Bonsai for things such as: growth, liveliness, size, and shape. These are things you are unable to do shopping online. Another drawback of online shopping is you run the risk of the Bonsai dying during delivery. Further setbacks of online shopping include the inability to determine the right equipment you need such as: pots, soil, wire, & cutting tools. These problems are no longer an issue as Maruyama Bonsai Nursery has everything I need from a variety of Bonsai tree/plants to Bonsai equipment. The nursery is small but still manages to have a good selection of Bonsai, which include: Juniper, Maple, Crape Myrtle, & Zelkova trees, to name a few. The Bonsai are reasonably priced. Prices range from $15 for young Bonsai and over $1,000 for mature Bonsai. These prices are reasonable, considering the amount of time and effort spent on the care of Bonsai - which can span many years. As for equipment, the nursery has durable wire, cutting tools, soils infused with fertilizer, & pots! You can freely ask questions about what equipment is needed for care, which allows you to properly determine what is and isn't useful. What I love most about this nursery is that no one is selling a product, the product sells itself. What I mean by that is, you can leisurely and peacefully walk through the aisles in search of the perfect Bonsai without anyone asking you to buy something. When it is time to purchase your Bonsai or Bonsai equipment, you can do so with cash, debit, or credit. To be more accommodating during this pandemic, and for the post-pandemic era, they also accept my favorite payment method, APPLE PAY! The only two issues that I have with this nursery are as follows: the unmarked location makes it easy to miss (there needs to be a sign up) and the lack of store hours. The nursery is only open from 8am until 12pm, Monday through Friday. I would appreciate more availability. My final verdict? This is a great Bonsai nursery that is close to home for Sacramentans & Elk Grovians. I recommend everyone who is interested in Bonsai to visit this store at least once to see the beauty of it for themselves. read more

Y'all! Bonsais are my new obsession and Murayama's Bonsai Nursery is my new favorite place! It's 5-10 minutes away from where I live! This beautiful Japanese Maple will be changing colors soon and I cannot wait to witness it. The nursery is small but makes up for what they have inside. They have beautiful bonsais that caught my eyes but sadly most were not for sale ! I saw a few I was ready to buy until I saw the tag it they weren't for sale. If you have time today, stop and buy some bonsais! The owners were very nice and they are around trimming, caring, and making more bonsais. Hidden Gem. Very hidden. Truth...I had a hard time finding the location, but when I did, I was so pleased! Located Off the beaten track and semi-hidden in an industrial area off Freeport "around" 47th, it hides behind other businesses (on the side and behind FWC for example) but has been around for years. Maruyama was recommended to me when I was searching for a particular type of bonsai tree. Having never heard of it, but driving through the area many times, I was luckily able to find it on Yelp (always handy). After driving past it, oh...about three times, I found the gravel driveway that led to an area behind, and snaking around the side of two buildings. When you drive in, you will see a greenhouse to your left and in front, a small shed. This is a smaller family run nursery, but with a nice selection. There is a large indoor, and outdoor growing area filled with plants, shrubs, trees and pottery. The woman showed me around, and guided me to the potted plants and trees that were available to be taken home or replanted. The selection of smaller bonsai trees (5 yrs and younger) had so many shapes and variations, so I had a hard time picking just one. I finally selected a 4 yr old Japanese pine varietal, perfect in shape and ready to grow come spring. It was already in an adorable ceramic pot, with a large rock and moss. They have everything you need to start your bonsai project or hobby, from tiny seedlings to very old trees, and the pricing will reflect the type and age. There are also extra "accessories" available near the main potting shed. Everything in this nursery has obviously been carefully nurtured! My bonsai tree quest fulfilled, I happily thanked the kind and helpful owners. I did not see the entire layout, but the variety is stunning. I would give this place two star if I could from my own experience. The owner's character is so weak it's almost like not happy being there. I've been to so many different bonsai nurseries and by far this place is the worst. If you ever visit SoCal try to visit Fuji Bonsai in Sylmar, CA. Roy Nagatoshi is very friendly guy. He's got lots of different materials like olives, junipers, black pines, chinese elm trees and many more. Roy would answers all questions you have about bonsai specially if you are new in the bonsai world. Complete opposite of this place. I would also point that all plants aren't priced so you will have to go back and forth to ask questions. Some plants are tagged if it's not for sale, but some aren't. Like if they decide not to sell the plant, they would say "it's not for sale". Well if it's not for sale, separate it from the rest and lock it up! Seriously you would have to go back and forth back and forth hoping that that's the one. It is very annoying! You just have to deal with the fact that the owner is not very friendly, not very welcoming almost. So if you are new to bonsai and try seek knowledge, I wouldn't expect much. But if you just wanted to explore and don't ask a lot of questions, this place is the right for you. read more

Another hidden gem in Sacramento. Just remember to follow the guidance of the other yelpers and look for the red fence as navigation will lead you to somewhere else. Their hours are early in the morning so don't complain if you get there at 1p and they're closed. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Ask questions if you have any and they'll lead you in the right way. The nursery itself is small but very umm tranquil, with the exception of spring spider webs everywhere. My boyfriend and I were looking for a small bonsai for our place to keep because we just recently lost our dog and slowly learning to care for something again. After not finding something at Home Depot and a few local plant shops, we were looking online and yelp and found there was this place that specialized in bonsais. We got there and it didn't really have a sign at entry but I had read on yelp a lot of people mentioning how to enter the business etc so wasn't hard for us to find. There are lots of options to choose from the workers/probably owners were helpful and helped us choose the right one for indoors. We chose a little jade plant which was kind of pricy for a little one. I did like how the worker/probably owner helped up wire the plant so that it can grow and shape as desired. This is exactly the kind of local business that everyone should support and it was a joy to purchase our bonsai tree from them. There were so many options of my specific type of bonsai and sizes, that it took me quite a while to choose one. Variety and options are my favorite thing. Local businesses who obviously care about their products and are happy to be helpful are my even more my favorite thing. Conclusion: I meant to order a bonsai tree on Amazon but forgot and when the date came that I needed one, I was so glad I had been so absent-minded and was forced to look locally because I had no idea a place like this even existed in Sacramento. It means so much more to actually pick it out yourself and get great advice as well. And it feels great to support local, of course, but even moreso when they are legitimately nice people. 10/10 would bonsai again. read more

I have been going here for my bonsai plants and supplies for about 5 years. Normally, I'm never approached by the husband and wife owners if I need help. I don't mind. When I find something I like I get their attention and generally they are helpful and offer me a slight discount from their asking price. My visit today was different. Asked for help and it was received indifferently. No effort either in showing me options or pricing. In effect, I was given a price and told to go look over in that direction and he walked away. About 5 minutes later I watched him direct his attention to a couple and he talked to them at length and also offered discounts for the plants they were interested in purchasing. After seeing this I walked out and decided I'm not coming back again. Really unfortunate. Just did not see the need to be treated poorly as a long standing customer. read more

I came here to buy myself a bonsai, but have been coming here every time to gift my family & friends bonsai. Mrs. M is the most knowledgable and friendly person! She helped me pick out a juniper bonsai and introduced me to the other bonsai's around. I've been here twice and plan to come everytime I have a birthday or a holiday coming up. I now have a juniper bonsai & an olive bonsai that has been growing the last 2-3 months. The bonsai soil they use already has fertilizer, so you don't need to change the soil or make any changes. Keep the bonsai outdoors and water it 1x a day in the winter & spring and 2x a day in the summer & early fall. Morning sun & afternoon shade in the summer & early fall. Learning how to care about a bonsai felt extremely daunting to me, but Mrs. M made it straightforward and less overwhelming. My olive & juniper bonsai have been thriving! I'm exciting to see how big they will get in a year. I love coming here! The bonsai's are taken care. The quality is exceptional. read more

Came here looking for a Bonsai as a graduation gift. The place is a little hard to find as there is no sign stating what's what in the industrial area it's located in. Parking is behind a red metal gate. Once parked we walked toward a semi entrance unclear of who works there as we weren't greeted. We walked around the nursery - it was chaos nothing is labeled there are plants all over m- on top of tables, on the floor, in the aisles, needless to say we weren't impressed. We saw a small Bonsai that was just okay looking and it was $40! Wow. Seems like a money grab. We did not purchase- and don't plan to return. read more

I have been meaning to visit for a long time and finally made it, on a weekday. You have to remember, they close at noon. Other reviews were right, it was hard to find. I found the marijuana dispensary and I found several towing companies and other car part stores, etc, etc. So I went down and asked one very nice tow truck employee. He laughed and said, yes, the bonsai place is one of their hidden/secret nursery. The place is more on Belleu Woods Lane than 47th St. There is a very distinctive red metal gate. Parking is inside. I will post some pictures. The place is run/owned by this nice couple. It's beautiful inside, so peaceful, humid, and just filled with bonsai trees and plants. The couple worked quietly and kept to themselves so, you have to ask. Bottom line, she was able to help me with everything I wanted. Bonsai soil, pots of all kinds and not expensive, nets, plastic pots, wires and cutting tools. I asked for a smaller starter bonsai that I can practice with and I got one. She didn't try to sell me stuff even after I told her I was a beginner. I plan on going back again and again. I'm for patronizing locally owned stores. read more

The Maruyama's have been doing bonsai for years. There isn't anything they do not know about these trees. I've found them to be incredible sensei, They are totally honest and with quality information and product. They are not there just to sell a tree. Their trees are all works of art, with both Maruyama's being artists. If you are looking for praise, or a sales pitch, do not come here. If you are interested in bonsai, this is the best place in this part of the country. I've been coming since the 90's and as I've moved further away, I miss not being here more often. They can fit you with trees that will fit you as a person, not just a "customer". Just watch and listen, and be astounded at the trees they have available to fit your needs. read more

There aren't a lot of recent reviews on this place, so I thought I'd add another entry for 2020 . This place is a bit out of the way, I was coming from Folsom, but it looked like it had a lot of variety and options, so I came. I agree with previous reviewers that the items are not priced individually. The tables are sorted by the age of the plant and therefore, pricing is based on age. If you like to take your time to shop and browse everything before making a decision, this is the place to go. Trying to find a bonsai that has a decent trunk, leaf growth, the right shape, decide on wired/non-wired, etc, took a lot of time for me. The sales people were available to answer questions and pricing, but they weren't necessarily "on the floor" circling or waiting for me to make a decision. I will say, it's definitely a family ran business and if all you want are a lot of options, with no frills, this is a good place to go. When I found the bonsai plants I wanted, the price she quoted me on one ($75) was different from the price she ended up charging me. As she rang me up, the gentleman she works with, told her it was only $45! Earlier, she told me that a similar (in size and shape) but a little older plant I was considering was $200 (I obviously put that one back), so I asked her "are you sure the other plant I originally wanted isn't less than $200?". She assured me that it was $200. =( I wasn't going to complain that the plant I ended up taking home was less than she quoted. I give this place four stars for the large inventory available and everyone I talked to was very kind, but there are ups and downs to not having all items individually priced. read more
