OK, my rating should REALLY be 4+ stars, not quite 5. The old Marx had consistently excellent bagels. Then, a couple of years ago, the exccentric founder retired and sold. The new owners, who I have never met but view as well-intended, pledged to maintain the great tradition. At first, I think the quality of the bagels was not consistently maintained. It seemed to me no one was paying attention to the consistency of the product. Some bagels were very bready and almost unrecognizable as a real bagel except for the shape. But then two weeks later I would find excellent bagels again. Despite this, I didn't stop visiting Marx. I frankly knew of no better alternative. I also think the folks there really were trying to get it right with consistent quality and to also please more modern and youthful customers too with a few new products. I am very pleased to say I think the Marx folks are more consistently delivering good bagels again. Maybe not every order I have placed for the last few months was great. I have had maybe one or two bagels there even recently that I don't think are as good as they should be. But these probles now seems far less frequent. So I think the Marx folks deserve credit for addressing 'consistent-quality' issues (not that I really know whether or not they read these comments). In any case: good for them! They are a really nice bunch of folks working there too. So I look forward to many more visits there for fresh - and hopefully consistently excellent - bagels. read more

I have been coming to see "The Bagel Man" for as long as I can remember - well over 20 years. John the owner is a hoot, he is known for speaking his mind and his wife Deneil is a sweetheart - you don't see much of her but she is just as involved in the business from behind the scenes. All food there is blessed by a Rabbi and is Kosher. They are open everyday from 6am-8pm. Know what you're going to order when you get up to the counter - it can get very busy in there. First time trying this place today. it wasn't crazy busy, but it took 15-20 minutes to place my order. I was about the 4th person in line. When I placed my order, they were out of coleslaw a little before noon (no big deal...I just subbed with potato salad). I placed my order and went to the register to check out. I was the only person waiting at the checkout. I waited about 5 minutes for someone to come to the register. (I literally stood right at the counter waiting for someone to make eye contact.). When the lady came to the register, she rang two people up ahead of me that had just walked up, even though she could clearly see I was the only one who had been waiting at the register. I took the bagel sandwiches to my wife's office to join her for lunch. When we opened the container, both bagels were burnt and so dry we could barely chew them. read more

Went on a Sunday morning around 9:00 am. Order at the corner and then pick up. We ate inside and there was plenty of seating. We were a party of 4 and had two bagel and egg, one chocolate chip with cream cheese, and one combo (everything) with butter and jelly, and 2 coffees. All were good and prices are really reasonable. They have more than bagels but my focus was all bagel. They have so many varieties, I think I stood there and looked at them all for over 5 minutes. I decided on strawberry, blueberry and raisin. I also bought cream cheese of course. It was the creamiest! In the car I broke I to the strawberry bagel. It was so delicious I got out of the car to buy another. My knowledge, understanding, or appreciation of bagels doesn't extend beyond store-bought stack-packaged bagels in a bag like a loaf of bread, or even one tier up from that, national chain bakery bagels, such as Einsteins (which I thought were pretty good with the shmears and what not..), Given that preface, I never really cared much for bagels. Till one day, a co-worker brought bagels from Marx in for the Friday morning breakfast roundup. Man! These bagels are palm sized, thick and crunchy but chewy and just the perfect consistency. The toppings are amazing, and the combo leaves your breath smelling like garlic and onion the entire rest of the day. Their creams are hearty and delicious and their sandwiches are amazing. Craving lox and bagels? This is your place to get them. I had to go and try them for myself after I've eaten them out of the brown bag and tried to slice them with the flimsy plasticware. They've got what seems like a gazillion types of bagels of all different flavors and sandwich combinations are sizable but limited. Had a simple scrambled eggs on a combo bagel and really, the bagel outshined the eggs, but still delectable. I only wish I lived within walking distance of this place. Their bagels, like most bagels, taste better hot and toasted, and after a day, it's just not the same. I don't know if they're like "New York" style bagels or wherever else bagels are popular, and I could never tell the difference between a regular bagel and Vincent's famous bagels in Montreal, but these are damn good. Just want to say, shame on you for putting every individual bagel in styrofoam container. Was just in and ordered two jalapeño bagels with jalapeño cream cheese. First of all we got one with regular cream cheese which I noticed and kid offered to remake it but I just wanted to get out of there so I took it. Honestly, glad I did as as the jalapeño cream cheese on the other one was terrible. Very salty and red in color?? Shouldn't it be green?? I normally buy these bagels at a stand in Findlay Market in OTR. But I wasn't in the mood for going down there, and I was already in the area so chose to go straight to the source. It was pretty empty on an early Sunday evening. Come to think of it, I rarely see people in here. I came in not quite sure of what to do so I stopped out the counter and waited. Took a few minutes before anyone acknowledged me but after that, I was in and out in less than five minutes. The bagels ended up being more expensive than going to Findlay but they were nice and tasty. I might come here and try something for lunch since I work in the area, but I think I will stick to Findlay Market as much as possible. read more

Marx Hot Bagels was a place that I normally noticed on my way to Penn Station, but never went too because I was never just looking for Bagels. That all changed when my friend said he wanted a light breakfast and yelp popped up Marx. The claim to fame for Marx is they are the best bagel you can get outside of New York. No surprise, they are also a traditional Jewish bakery with no pork products. So no bagel, egg, and cheese bagel unless you get a veggie patty sausage. Bagel variety is amazing at Marx, they also have a few bakery items and a wild selection of drinks you can grab and go quickly. I tried a whole wheat bagel with my favorite (veggie spread). The bagels was good, but I wasn't a fan of the spread. The flavor was just lacking for me and it was an over abundance of spread. It was actually pretty pricing at 4.25. I realized it's because you get so much spread. But it's 3.25 if you get plain spread. Overall, my recommendation would be to get a bagel, spread on the side. More of a treat yo self splurge, but a nice local business. read more

My daughter's response to the antiseptic remodel, "They destroyed my childhood. I sent an email to them before about the lack of character in the new store and was told that some of that would be returned. i don't see it. it looks like another chain along the interstate. I complained about the tuna salad before and was told that nothing had changed. I don't believe that. I used to drive home after a long emotionally trying day at work and dream about a tuna on half and half. it cured all the hurts of the day. the tuna I had today was nothing to dream about. I had high hopes for this place.... I had NYC bagels and Montreal bagels... I would say Montreal has a 5 out of 5 star bagel shops - they are fresh and top of the line in my opinion. NYC a 4 out of 5 and Marx maybe a 2 out of 5. They do have a variety but the bagels were similar bagels I would get at the store and toast myself. We ordered 3 things. Regular with cream cheese, a Leo which is lox with egg and tuna melt. The tuna melt was the best with the tomato, onion, and lettuce Overall the bagels are sub par. If you get your own can of tuna for 99 cents or lox for $8 and an egg you could make your own and have it be much better. I was hoping the bagels would be better but they are similar to ones you could buy at the store frozen (just more variety) Also the people at the counter just seemed unhappy maybe because of the owner...when we ordered I just was more scared or wondering if it's okay to order.... It wasn't a friendly you can order... Let me help you feeling. I think that's more sad than a negative so my rating is more regarding the food quality vs value and experience and the food was just so-so. Not sure what the hype is about. read more

Marx is a classic kosher bagel shop located in a little strip mall on Kenwood Road. They've been slinging bagels since 1969. Their bagels are the style I prefer - boiled in water, and baked. However they also contain no butter or oil which IMO make them less delicious but yay for being healthy! They also feature 30+ varieties of bagels, sandwiches, soups, salads, vegetarian options and pastries. Their best-sellers are mainly their tuna, egg salad, and lox and cream cheese. I loved the atmosphere of the joint. It really reminded me of the delis in NYC. Which IMO we need more of! It's the thing I find myself craving the most. However you should no Kosher is Kosher and that means no meat whatsoever. I'm still trying to find that spot that can do everything (insert sad face emoji). I ordered up an everything bagel with half chive and half garlic smear. I really LOVED the garlic. It had whole chunks in it and I was in heaven. The bagel itself (sans butter or oil) was kind of dry. IMO their bialy's are the star of the show. The bagel for me was forgettable. But if you order up a bialy and lather that thing in butter or cream cheese you will be addicted. You can find Marx at local coffee shops throughout the city, or make a trip to the shop. A fantastic variety of bagels in a kind of funky little store. Service is no frills, order at the counter. I got a sesame bagel with lox and cream cheese and iced tea. Everything came out quickly. I usually like to eat lox bagels open face but they only put cream cheese on one half of the bagel. Luckily there was plenty to redistribute to both sides and plenty of lox as well. After the rearranging, the bagel was great- authentic, tasty and not too expensive. I would love to come back to try some of the other more unique bagels and spread options. If I lived in the area I would definitely pickup bagels to go regularly as well. read more

I keep coming to this place because there's a 50-50 shot that I'll actually enjoy my experience here. It's also one of the only options really. There is no attention to detail, no one really tries, but at least the food is okay. I think it's a little small, but when they actually get your order right, it's a pretty good experience. I've had new employees, slow employees, and some that just don't care. They do have some employees that really are great though. A lot of their issues could be avoided if they just wrote down peoples orders. I'm just amazed that I ordered a bagel with cream cheese to go and my bagel had NO cream cheese on it when I got back to the office and finally saw it. I really don't know how you can forget that. There was what seemed like garlic butter (no idea what it really was, but it was lathered on and had turned the whole thing an uncomfortable color of yellow). I gave it to one of my co-workers and even he didn't like it. I just watched him throw the whole thing out. I keep trying to like this place, but I've just never had a great experience here. If you're looking for bagels in the Blue Ash area though, I would still say its worth checking out. Marx is the real deal. Kroger, Dunkin donuts, grocery store freezer bagels, Einstein, etc. are all OK but Marx from the store itself is the real deal IMHO. Their packaged bagels are just OK but for the real thing you gotta go to the store in Blue Ash. My only complaint is when you go to the store and get a bagel sandwich, the fillings overflow the small bagels and require a fork to eat. That's hardly a shortcoming but beware if you go there. read more
