I haven't been in Mary Coyle's since the 80s and Michael Trecaso's since the 90s. It was really awesome to find them together, Mary Coyle's still in its cool, quirky Highland Square location and Trecaso's having moved in from the old Akron U location. Our waitress told us that's been twenty years. Time has flown. Happily, though, Trecaso's mastery of sauce and crust has not gone anywhere. Neither has Michael Trecaso, on hand to personally feed and entertain guests. We had spaghetti with meat sauce, with lots of meat and deep tomato flavor. You can't beat good sauce. The tuna with melted provolone, toasted on a hoagie was a hit and the garlic pizza was perfect, the crust and toppings balanced so perfectly that you didn't think "crust" and you didn't think "sauce", you just thought "pizza". The cherry boston cooler was really good and of course save room for 27 flavors of ice cream and five flavors of sherbet. This is, after all, Akron's classic ice cream parlor since 1937. The decor is kitschy/old timey, the cost with ice cream was moderate and it comes unreservedly recommended. read more

My wife left a review but I feel the need to do so myself. We were excited for ice cream so we decided to support a local business in this tough time with this coronavirus mess. We saw the sign as we approached the front door for one person at a time. We figured that we were married and live together so we would just go in together. Rather than explaining nicely that only one at a time, we were rudely scolded and told one at a time. We attempted to explain that it made no sense since we're married and if you get one, you get both . The older "gentleman " and the woman both said 1 only. They had less people skills than a disturbed hornets nest. We will never return. read more

This is a great local spot for ice cream. My husband and I shared a cookies and cream shake and a classic vanilla sundae with hot fudge, both were generous portions and they tasted great! We will go back to try some of the other flavors and options on the menu. read more

They are most famous for their cold creamy treats but I only go there for their spaghetti. I would order a large (small is also an option) spaghetti with meat sauce which includes a small salad and bread and butter. Mr. Trecaso's meat sauce is delicious, better than any other I've had in the city. Also, don't bother asking for meatballs because they don't have any. I've tried their ice-cream but that did not "wow" me as much. Their service is unremarkable, but does the job. Their kitchen closes at 8pm as Mr . T told me one night when I called in an order just a fee minutes before. Stopped for ice cream and it was very busy on a Friday night. We were able to order right away and our order did not take long. Always great treats here, never disappointed. Very nostalgic place and also brings back my fond memories of Trecaso's Italian restaurant when it was near The University of Akron. Rude!! Will never go back. Our band kids wanted to go there after their concert. When a couple of them walked in and were excited to see their friends (there were only 5 of them) the owner came over and yelled at them to be quiet and said he did not want to hear them again. He was nasty. My husband approached him and asked what the kids did wrong and he said they were too loud (they were not!). My husband said 'after tonight we will never come here again' and the owner said 'you can just leave right now...' Mind you it was 9pm and there were only 2 other tables occupied. I've Been here several times and each time I've thought my portions were abysmal. I got the large portion of spaghetti and it would have been a small anywhere else. I had been wanting to try this place for awhile. Stopped in for my first visit and ordered a Strawberry milkshake to-go. I was extremely disappointed. It just wasn't good. The ice cream tasted cheap and almost a little freezer-burned. At first I worried that there was no way the tiny straw would suck up a delicious $5.25 milkshake. But I soon found out that there was not a single strawberry in the milkshake; they use a fakey-tasting strawberry syrup. Maybe other things are better? Another Akron Landmark owned but the Trecaso Family. They used ot have the Trecaso pizza place by the University campus but when that closed they moved the food to this place. I've never been a fan of the food, (I got sick once after eating their pizza, proably not the pizza's fault but the memory was enough to not eat it again). The service here is awful. As others have said, you really do feel like you're stepping back in time when entering the restaurant. Overall, the atmosphere is quite nice, but the bathrooms could certainly use some attention (no locks on the doors. really?). My date and I picked a booth in the back corner and had only dessert on our minds. However, "The Dad" was rather persistent in convincing us to try his special pizza. "But it's REALLY good", he insisted, even after assuring him that we just finished an entire meal only minutes before. Our waitress was more well-behaved and happy to take our orders for the ice cream we had come for. She ordered the Cocoanut Fudge Showboat and I picked the Mint Fudge Showboat. Both were delicious. Despite the (somewhat uncomfortable) experience with "The Dad" (or as we now call him, "Creepy Pizza Man"), it was an enjoyable experience, and we will definitely be making a return. read more

The very best meat sauce in town!! The owner likes to promote his pizza but sorry, I just really love your pasta! Their salads are also good. The dressing is light and it is a nice compliment to the spaghetti. You can also substitute it for apple sauce. But who would go here just to eat ice cream ya? I absolutely love their Italiano spumoni (i might have spelled that wrong). It's a nice blend of nuts and fruits in two delicious scoops. Never had a bad experience in terms of service. I usually get served by the same waitresses. They're quite attentive too. When I realized I didn't have parmesan cheese on the table all I had to do was make eye contact and she knows immediately what I'm looking for! Fantastic service and food. Located in the upscale Highland Square district, this may well be one of the more unique restaurants in all of Akron. It may look like the average diner, but it is definitely worth checking out! There is a nice variety of Italian food on their menu. However, their primary specialty is ICE CREAM! They have many different flavors of ice cream and they create all types of savory ice cream treats. Great place for dessert, or simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. Good for date night! ;) I ordered a Buckeye (Showboat). Great dessert, large portions! In a previous review, someone claimed that this place only serves bottled water; yet when I was here, I had a complimentary glass of water to go with my cup of coffee and ice cream treat. As a bonus, they have tons of Akron postcards available for purchase! These postcards depict local scenery from places like local parks, Akron Zoo, Cuyahoga Falls, Canal Park, Akron Art Museum, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and a few others. This small pizza and ice cream place was recommended to me by a friend. I came here two times, both during my weekend night call, and I really enjoyed the ice cream they had to offer. One time I got mint oreo, the other time peanut butter fudge, and I really enjoyed both flavors. I've never tried their meal food before, and I may do so in the future. We stopped by there to get ice cream. The sign on the door says only one customer allowed in at a time. My husband and I both walked in because we're obviously together, live together, sleep together etc... We were rudely told that only one of us could be in the store at a time! Seriously???? Yet the old man and the woman working were in there together and neither one was wearing gloves or a mask!!! How does one of us walking in at a time make a difference if we go in back to back?' I went to this place recently when hanging out with a friend who grew up in the area. There were many things I enjoyed about the experience, but gave it 3 stars because the quality of the ice cream didn't impress me as much. What I enjoyed about this place: - the crazy bright pink sign - the fact that it's an ice cream place and an Italian restaurant in one - both with their own names (couldn't tell you if the Italian food is any good) - outdoor seating - variety of flavors, including my favorite maple walnut It's definitely worth checking out if you're in the area and from what I understand, it's a local favorite. I personally found the ice cream flavor to be on target, but it wasn't as creamy and rich as I would've liked. Mary Coyles is one of my favorite places to go in Akron. I no longer live in Ohio, so I only get a chance to stop in every few years. I'm always so excited when I walk in and see literally nothing has changed--same wood panelling, same soda fountain set-up, same red tables & molded-wood booths, and same AWESOME, FRESH BANANA ice cream! This place is an institution and for good reason! The ice cream is great, homemade, and made with fresh ingredients. I wonder about the others that have 'yelped' about tap water, bad service, etc. I think you get what you put out there. Today, we were greeted as we came in, immediately served a round of tap waters, and served our sundaes and showboats with ice cream substitutions (without any extra charge) all by a perfectly lovely 80-plus-year-old woman. It feels like some 'yelpers' look for reasons to complain. But really there is just nothing to complain about with Mary Coyles. So if you're an uptight a-hole, maybe you should go to Menchies or Ben & Jerry's. Enjoy your carageenan-filled, artificially-flavored ice cream served by bubbly, vapid teens. Anyway, even if you don't think you're a banana ice cream person, go for it! It's made with fresh banana, not banana liqueur. Banana hot fudge showboat with crushed nuts is definitely the way to go. I want to support local business! Took my father here for his 80th birthday as he used to go here was a kid. The plus is the nostalgia. It was wonderful. Brought back great memories. The food and ice cream were just fine. Nothing remarkable, but no complaints. But we were served by the grumpiest woman. She was older and we suspect was the owners wife. She was so unpleasant no matter how we tried to engage with her. My Dad flew thousands of miles to come back to his hometown. This woman clearly has no interest in being in the service industry. I've been here a few times, and on all the occasions for different reasons. First, for their Italian food. It's okay. I'm sure the way my family makes it is a lot less healthy for you, but the sauces are thin and it would seem like the cook is afraid of spice. The second time I visited was just for their shakes, and have been ever since. Their shakes and creams are great! So much variety and the portions are great! Each time I've gone, the service was always cool. I wouldn't know what excellent service was, but this was good enough. They were nice and courteous. I should probably mention that it was just me and my date in the place at the time, but that shouldn't matter too much. What I would suggest is that, if you can, eat outside. Inside looks a bit drab with all the dark wood paneling and old-timey chairs and booths, which are the dark earth colors also. Mary Coyle is a little Italian/ice cream restaurant in the heart of highland square. My girlfriend and I have been there several times and our experiences there have been good, but inconsistent. Their ravioli is excellent, the ice cream is good, but the pizza is ok. They go for an old style ice cream shop vibe, that kind of works, but not fully. They also give you tiny weird bags for leftovers instead of a box, which got messy when you put sauce covered entrees into them (such as pizza or pasta). They have diverse selection of ice cream and Italian entrees. I recommend this place for a casual dinner or lunch. read more

This local institution has stood the test of time with it's retro interior and homemade ice cream, in fact when you walk in you get the feeling that you just stepped into a 1950's ice cream parlor... which also serves up excellent Italian dishes from Mr. Trecaso himself. If you're hungry and need to get full, you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu, but the pizza and pasta dishes are especially gratifying. Conversely, if you'd rather have something to satisfy your sweet tooth, the ice cream and candy selection is as good as it gets and the milkshakes are thick, rich, and served the way they should be - with a tin container - so none goes to waste. Wow! How awful!! Not even worth one star. Took the kids to get ice cream after their band concert and they got yelled at for being loud. We were only there about 3 minutes when the owner did the yelling. We had a group of 10, 5 parents and 5 kids. The kids were talking and laughing as you would expect in an ice cream store. They were not rude or using profanity. When I asked what the kids did wrong he was NASTY to me and said I could leave now if I wanted. Michael the owner had 4 other people in his shop and should have been grateful for the business. He should stay in the kitchen or retire! Definitely not good for groups and not good for kids. I will drive farther and pay more money before I spend another dime at Mary Coyle!!!!!!!!! read more
