2 days ago went to Trecaso's, me and my husband's first date 40 yrs ago. Location has changed but the good feeeling and great pizza has not. Although it's not a sit down restaurant at the moment, the interior was still nostalgic with old pictUres and memorabilia . They have tables outside and it was a perfect day! Holy wretched food! Meatballs were homeade I suppose, but then over-microwaved and served in a bowl of its own grease with sauce on it. Disgusting. I so wanted them to live up to the hype, let alone be edible/worth the cost. Pizza was next on the chopping block..." I don't understand some of these negative reviews. Trecaso's/Mary Coyle is a wonderful old-time ice cream parlor that also has Italian food, and it's a gem of a place. First of all, the guy who said that they don't take credit cards told a complete falsehood. We have gone to Trecaso's two or three times a month for years, and we ALWAYS pay with a credit card. Why would anyone say that? For what it's worth, I read that person's other reviews, and he doesn't seem to be satisfied with much of anything. -Take him with a grain of salt. Actually, it sounds like he's describing Luigi's. Rarely do you find old-time ice cream parlors like this any more, although Canton still has a couple. However, where this one is CLEAN, most other places like this are not. Even though I'm not old enough to have been in a 1940's soda shop, Trecaso's must be what they were like! It's like a fun trip back to Happy Days. The Mary Coyle part is the ice cream & candy shop. They make their own premium ice cream from scratch using expensive ingredients, not chemicals. Their sundaes are absolutely incredible, the homemade ice cream is REAL, and my goal is to try every one of them. Yes, they charge an extra quarter to substitute this or that. SO WHAT?? This is NOT McDonald's folks. Trust me, you get more than your money's worth! If the quarter means that much to you, then go back to the golden arches, spend a buck, enjoy your fake ice cream McCone, and live large! Sheesh! As for the Italian food (Trecaso's Restaurant), I like it. I have eaten pizza all over Akron, and Trecaso's rectangular pizza is my favorite. Everyone has his own preference, I know, but this pizza is IT for me... homemade sausage, old-world pepperoni, and yes, I love his pizza sauce! Yep, you pay an extra buck for cheese on your salad, but you get a LOT of cheese. In all fairness, I do wish they'd offer a few other salad toppings beyond cheese (Parasson's lets you spend a dollar to add nice antipasto toppings). However... Trecaso's Italian dressing is the BOMB! Plus, this is one of the very rare places that offers RED clam sauce... and it's excellent. Originally, I also thought their portions were a bit small. However, most dishes come in a small and a large size, and I learned that a large doesn't leave me room for ice cream. The small dinners are more filling than you'd think, and God forbid I don't have room for a sundae. Now- I want to address the comments that refer to Mike Trecaso as a curmudgeon. Yeah, in a way he is, but he's a loveable curmudgeon... When he comes across as cranky around us, he's ALWAYS joking, and it's because he likes you. He's a lot like a grandpa, folks, and you might misinterpret that. Although Mike might want to dial the crabby kidding back a little, he is really a sweetheart. You can give it right back to him and have a good time. Mike is old school: his employees have a dress code, are always neat and they stay busy... I've never seen one on a cell phone. The place stays clean and it's kept in good repair. Good luck finding that in a restaurant that old anywhere else. Mary Coyle/Trecaso's is an Akron treasure... go and appreciate it for what it is, and leave room for a Showboat! read more

Good late night option, especially if some of your party want Italian food and some want ice cream, since it's combined with Mary Coyle's ice cream parlor. Service was slow, but we were catching up with old friends and weren't really in a hurry. Pizza was good but not great. The flavor was good, but the crust was soggy in places and the cheese fell off in big chunks. My companions seemed to like their shakes and stuffed eggplant. read more

The food here is mediocre at best. The chicken parm was rubbery, and the sauce tasted old with a disgusting aftertaste. The worst part is the owner. He treats people terribly, even customers. You better improve the food quality if you expect repeat customers, because it's not good enough to offset your disgusting behavior. There are so many restaurants in the area that are far more deserving of support as we try to get back to normal. read more

What a nice surprise. Definitely like the old school Sunday dinners with my neighborhood Italian friends growing up. Pizza was solid. Sauce was good and the crust had nice chew with some definite crunch on the edges. Lasagna was nice and balanced with a very tasty meat sauce. Chicken Alfredo was slightly broken but still had good flavor. Meatballs were a little dense but extremely flavorful. The sausage in the sausage Parmesan has a touch to much fennel for me but that is just my opinion. I would definitely go back. read more

Wonderful diner with interesting decor. Very tasty pizza. I'm surprised with the low rating but decided to give it a try anyway based on family member's fond memories of it and its old location. I was not disappointed. We had mushroom pizza, stuffed mushrooms and meatballs. If you like robust homemade meatballs, you gotta try their meatballs. I have had a few good stuffed mushrooms before but theirs are the best I have had. The pizza sauce is really good too. No wonder it's award winning. read more

Great pizza, and try the linguine with their awesome red sauce! They also make a mean banana boat for dessert. Before you leave grab a pouch of chocolate candies, our favorite are the milk chocolate covered peanuts. read more

Trecaso's is a hidden gem in Akron, mainly over shadowed by the ice cream they sell under Mary Coyles. Everytime people are meeting me there for dinner, I end up telling them to go to Mary Coyles and they know right where that is. The Italian food is great from spaghetti to gnocchi to lasagna. I would say their food is as good if not better than Luigi's. read more

SUPER DELICIOUS ICE CREAM- Yes! AMAZING PIZZA- Yes! Yes! Yes! (seriously the best around Akron) PASTA SAUCE- Delicious! Candy- The peanut Butter creams are the best! Italian dressing- So yummy and you can buy a bottle! Cute old-timey atmosphere- Yes! Love it! This place is perfect for kids and families! My only complaint is that the meatballs could use a little more breading, but that is because I am Italian and I know the way meatballs should be made! Sorry guys. Really not sure how this place is still open. The owner demanded that I tell him where I was born before I could get my food that he brought to my table. He was yelling at a different customer while my daughter and I ate lunch. Food was bland and nothing special. I will never go back. Please do not support a business where an owner yells at his staff. Why is this place still open?!? It has fallen so far from what it once was - an Akron institution known for its great ice cream and nice location in Highland Square. It is a sad shell of its former self. The staff, the building, the food, the owner/manager - all look worn out and depressed. Just a horrible experience all around. Great pizza! Really nice place, very clean. They have a lot of different items on their menu. Everything is great and is the same as it was when I used to go to their other locations, it was favorite spot for lunch when I went to Akron U. The owner is very friendly and seems to genuinely care about his customers. They have a great selection of ice cream desserts too, loved the old fashion soda. I wish I would have read these reviews before dining here. My food was ok, but nothing special. The prices were higher than I would expect for the portion and quality. The menu clearly stated bread and salad with the dinners. The salad was 50% cheese, and we had to ask for the bread. We were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink besides water. Desert was good, but charged a $1 for not including an ingredient? Whatever... We just wanted out at that point, but my wife was looking forward to ice cream. read more

I'll start by saying the ice cream is always delicious. But the owner really ruins this place. They're very set in their ways on weird issues. Such as not having sprinkles or whipped cream toppings. Any time you substitute an item there's a large up charge. Even if you are removing chocolate sauce and added hot fudge. If you ask for something on the side such as nuts instead of being charged they just tell you know. The owner is rude and strange and the servers never return to the table. It's a shame because the food is quite good. Hope that is enough to keep this place going in the modern world. read more

Went in for lunch looking for hot soup on a cold day. Hoped to get the Italian wedding soup, which I remembered was really great, and was disappointed it was not on the menu the day we were there. Our chicken noodle was pretty good. Suppose the real reason we were there was to get a bowl of ice cream, and it was good as usual. I enjoy the vibe of the place, seeming as if it has just been there forever. The candy counter, ice cream area, and the window from the kitchen. Formica, naugahyde, glass, and chrome. Displays of Akron postcards and books, as well as a blimp or two. I enjoy the banter with the proprietor and the wait staff. It's not all new and spiffy, but I don't need that everywhere. Still a comfortable and traditional Highland Square place. I need to return to try the pizza again. I haven't had it for a while, but remember it was good last time. read more

Go here only if no other place is open! The food was marginal and portions small. The service was fine but the policies stink! Do you want cheese on your salad? It's $1 extra and they don't tell you. We asked why we were charged. When we said they should have told us about the extra dollar, the waiter said "that's your opinion"!!! Really? Charge us and not tell us and that's just an opinion? It's not the dollar, it's the principle. Ice cream anyone, not here. The ice cream is just okay, they do give huge portions, but they charge too much too. If you want a listed sundae with a different ice cream, $.25 extra for a substitution. Really, are they pre-made and they have to take out one to put in another? Don't they just scoop one or the other? Why is that extra? Also, don't expect your favorite topping free as we expected. The favorite is an extra $1 also! So a hot fudge sundae is $1 more to have hot fudge! Don't bother. Other places have better food and better prices. This place is a big disappointment. read more

Great pizza! We ordered the black olive pizza and it was delicious! The sauce was incredible and really made a difference! We also had phosphates (rasberry and strawberry) which were flavorful and a great blast from the past. The ice cream we had for dessert was excellent as well. Our waitress was extremely friendly and the proprietor engaged us in conversation for at least 15-20 minutes. We didn't find him to be a curmudgeon at all as stated in another review. I've always liked the ice cream here, and my roommate and I would go rather often during the summer. It turns out we were lucky enough somehow to always wind up there on days the owners weren't around, and it was only the younger staff -- the food is good, but the owners of this restaurant are some of the rudest people I've ever experienced in a restaurant. The owner came up and sat down at my table without a word just to give me a lecture on I was sitting and if I would kindly not sit like that in his restaurant (??? i don't even know what he meant by this). When we were leaving our carryout bag broke, and we were instructed by the woman there not to let it happen again, coupled with a massive amount of groaning and sighing, as if getting a new bag we would need to carry our food home was the worst thing. The younger staff spent the entire time silent, awkward, and staring at the floor - i can only guess because they dislike the manager as much as I've come to. We won't be returning.
