Needing new refractory panels was the diagnosis from Danny, of Mary Poppins Chimney Service, for our wood burning fireplace. Basically the linings inside that can crack over time. And unfortunately Danny no longer handles those panel replacements. But he did give us a referral he highly recommends. And while some will charge you over $100.00 just to come out for estimates, Danny does that for free. But Danny and his unique and personable personality, along with the most amusing van, is every bit worth a 5 star rating just for the show he puts on. His chimney topped van even blows smoke on command while playing a tune from the Mary Poppins soundtrack. A great advertisement gimmick while driving through busy areas, like our local Central Park where my wife first spotted him. Without much knowledge on chimney, I authorized the replacement work. During his work, I noticed that the metal cap was in brand new condition. All I need was a new chimney cap as the original one was a bit small. A simple cap replacement would have been suffice. Instead, the owner took out a brand new metal crown and cap. I'm sorry but I have to change my review. I thought he was great. But not now. He came out to my place three times. I manage a building... I have nine chimneys. Including mine. Originally, I called him because I realized water was getting in around my chimney somehow/ somewhere and had caused a huge mold problem (water had seeped into a nearby bookcase attached to my chimney.) The first time, I explained to him the issue in my apartment with the water and the mold and my fear that some thing was wrong with my chimney. He looked at my chimney from ground level outside & inside but did not inspect from the roof. He told me just a few of the mortar joints needed to be re-pointed and that my handyman could do it. After doing some research... I thought maybe the problem was on the roof and he never went up there. I asked him to come back out and inspect my buildings chimneys crowns and all of the flashing. I asked him to especially focus on my chimney which I suspected definitely had some type of an issue. After his 2nd Inspection: He told me my flashing was fine. He said all the chimney flashings were fine. He came back with estimates on putting rain caps and dampers on all of my buildings chimneys... (easy money makers). I had asked him to inspect the crowns and the flashing specifically. I did not ask him to tell me about rain caps and dampers. I already knew which apartments have them and which do not. That was not what I was asking the inspection for. He told me the flashing was fine on all of them. Including my place. He said one place needed a slight crown repair and I agreed to do that and add one rain cap onto that chimney. He did that during his 3rd visit. Thankfully, my handyman did go up on the roof and inspect the chimneys after this guy left for the 3rd time. And he discovered my chimney actually has NO flashing: Wood and chicken wire are exposed and this is clearly how the water was getting into my place and causing the mold issue. . See photo. And as far as the crown he repaired... It seems he just put some type of a rubber sealer wash on it and did not even fix / fill the crack first. So. If you need any actual repairs. Don't hire this guy. First review after first visit: I called him with what I thought was a disaster of a chimney. He came out within a few days with his assistant... His son... Evaluated the chimney and also a brick wall. He told me how to fix it. He was exactly on time, very nice, and very honest. And I love that this is a family run business.
