I'm a General contractor and one of my clients bought a house with 2 fireplaces in it. The house is so old that both fireplaces had a lot of issues. Probably the previous owner didn't even use them for 20 years. It had so many problems starting with the gas line and all the way to chimney caps. It's such a specific job that it was not that easy to find a decent contractor for it. I'm glad we went with The Chimney Guy. Chimney Guy installed a log set back in the winter and it worked fine. After leaving it off all summer I tried turning it on with the wireless remote & it wouldn't start. After changing 4 AA batteries, it still wouldn't catch. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called the office last Friday and they put me in touch with Louis, the man who installed it (and also did an excellent job)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] He came out the next day and checked everything. He found there were 2 B batteries that were weak, so he put in new ones and now the logs light very quickly. He was in and gone in 10 minutes. I'd give 4 stars to LOUIS, the installer, but the company, BAD BUSINESS. I called this company because I needed an expert to inspect my chimney and tell me exactly what was needed to install a gas log system. They charge $200 for the inspection and said it would go toward whatever services were needed. Louis came out, inspected my chimney, said it was in excellent shape and that all I needed was the gas log system and he could install. He told me it costs $250 to install but when I talked with the office 4 days later, the price went up to $350. I said okay. I had $200 already invested, I could pay another $150 to get Louis to install the gas log system. Louis returned, installed the gas log system in about 45 min. I paid $150 since they already had the $200 from the inspection. The office sent Louis to return to collect more money--Wow! That is so unprofessional. Make your installer do your dirty work. I called the office and was rudely told that was not the arrangement and that I needed to pay the entire $350. That's so wrong. I refused, of course! Louis by the way, a complete gentleman, asked that he hoped I could put all grievances aside and continue to work with The Chimney Guy. I thought, this guy works and represents like he owns the company. He was so very nice. I feel like they took advantage of me. No posted prices for various services. No documentation to explain what is covered for the $200 evaluation fee. A clear hourly rate, that mechanics offer. There was no real transparency with this company. I never like to feel that I didn't pay what I was suppose to pay for something. I feel horrible, and yet they are at fault. read more

I hired The Chimney Guy company to do a rebuild on my chimney, and they were, all in all, excellent. The rebuild looks excellent and appears to function just fine. They hit the timeline and pricing that we agreed to, and the rebuild staff (led by Antonio) and inspection and planning team (led by John) were all great. I definitely had a number of pretty rough communication issues with other members of the office staff, hence the four stars rather than five, so be aware of that. I would certainly recommend to write everything down and limit your communication to one staff representative (and I mean one staff representative only!) But again, the final quality of work appears to be excellent, they did the job on-timeline and at the quoted price, and I was very happy overall. I would definitely recommend working with the folks at The Chimney Guy if you plan to rebuild your chimney! read more

When I called The Chimney Guy last month, they quoted me $200 for an inspection, saying that a chimney cap would cost $450. Then they came out and said it would be $650 and they would have to reschedule. When I called for a new appointment, they said it would now cost $800! Ridiculous!!! Then I looked up prior times I had actually called them years ago to repair one of my tenants chimneys and again they charged me $200 inspection fee and told me it would cost over $10,000 to repair the flue! I paid these crooks to come out and inspect my chimney. They told us that it needed to be replaced and it was going to cost $55,000.00! Wow, that was unexpected. They later changed their quote to say it would be $40,000.00 to replace our chimney with a "rough finish" and another $40,000.00 if we wanted the brick veneer finish, which is what we currently have. So now it went from $55K to $80K!!?? I decided to get two more inspections as I didn't trust these guys. Well, I'm glad I did because BOTH of the other two companies said I in no way, shape or form need a new chimney. They said that the "360 degree crack" the Chimney Guy saw was actually just an overlay of the brick, which is perfectly fine! The honest guys I ended up going with put on a new chimney cap, sealed the crown, replaced the flashings, cleaned the smoke chamber and sealed around the entire brick veneer, all at a cost of $760.00! That's a lot better than the $55K-$80K the Chimney Guy told me. If these guys try to tell you that you need a new chimney and try to scare you into letting them do the work, do yourself a favor and get another company or two to come out and give you their opinion. EDIT: In response to the response by Mike R., I'm not sure what you're talking about because there was NOT a contractor present when your inspector did the inspection. Also, there was NOT a previous inspection done by another chimney company. Our potential buyer had their homeowner's inspection done by a home inspector. He was NOT a contractor and he was NOT a chimney guy. He was simply a home inspector and was neither a contractor nor a chimney specialist. We have since had our chimney inspected by a licensed contractor who ONLY does chimneys and he assured us our chimney is perfectly fine. So take your quote (that ranged from $40K all the way up to $80K) and throw it in the garbage, where it belongs. read more

I have two indoor gas fireplaces that for YEARS would not work! Other companies came out to my unit, inspected the fireplaces were unable to fix them and quoted me high prices to comeback and repair them. Had The Chimney Guy inspect a gas fireplace on a home we were buying... CG inspector had a look and sent a review saying the fireplace needed a little over $400 in general updates like sealing the firebox, expanding tile to the hearth etc. We moved in a month later and have never been able to get the fireplace to work... had another company come out to inspect and they said the electronics, valve and pilot assembly are shot- which are $1,800 to replace and not mentioned at all in the Chimney Guy's inspection report. I asked CG to refund their inspection fee, as they missed these major components' poor condition, but they said "no, the inspection was thorough and proper". Imagine failing to notice very expensive parts of a gas fireplace are going bad and then trying to pass off your incompetent review as "proper"... The Chimney Guy properly sucks, they don't stand behind their work. Don't waste your money on this business. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]I called The Chimney Guy and scheduled an appointment w/Chloe to have my chimney treated for creosote and chimney sweep.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Louis Coates who arrived at my home was nice however hard to understand. He made every effort to avoid explaining the details of the cleaning and kept repeating what I would ask leading me to believe it was a strategy to not answer questions.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] He said when he looked up into my chimney from the firebox, " It's not too bad." In the two part cleaning, the second visit he got up on the ladder and removed the chimney cap and swept inside and came into the house and said, "it's bad." He proceeded to vacuum the firebox. After he was done, I asked Louis what was so bad and he said, you are going to need to have work done on the chimney, replace the cap, back wall inside the firebox costing $5500, and would I like to make a deposit of $2500? I said NO! I knew it was a money grab immediately. I paid $500 for the two part chimney sweep. The Chimney Guy is licensed thru the state of California CSLB not sure if Louis is, and it is a good idea to check with the CSLB who is on this CSLB because Louis is not supposed to work on properties without a CSLB or mason license. I know he kept it under $500 so he must not have a CSLB license. Additionally, Louis did not provide a written invoice with an explanation of what was done, and the deficiencies with the fireplace he just offered a MONEY GRAB!!! It is best practice in the state of California to provide customers with invoices when a service is completed. CA regulators want to know what companies do not provide invoices for services, and they will visit companies who do not. I asked Louis, "can I use the fireplace?" he said, you did not use the fireplace enough so I could not clean it as good. Louis never gave instructions on how long I should keep a fire, and he said to go on and use creosote logs to loosen it, and also said it may not be safe to use the fireplace. Which one is it Louis?!? [[HIGHLIGHT]]Louis was very confusing and not confident with his words.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called Chloe on the same day and she said I would receive a quote for the repairs needed within 24-hours, which never arrived.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is why I am leaving a one star review. I hired a new company and licensed and provided a written quote with the repairs needed at a much lower cost, and mentioned it does not cost $5500 to repair the wall inside our small firebox, or the work this guy Louis said needed to be done. In fact, the licensed company said if Louis did not perform an inspection using a video into the chimney he could not be certain if all the work he has proposed to do and cost is needed. read more

Eddie T did an inspection on our chimney for the buyer of the property when we were in escrow selling our house. His report stated the following: "the only solution I see is to demo the chimney down to the ground, remove the existing foundation for the chimney, and then pour a new foundation and install either a new masonry base, new firebox, new smoke chamber and then follow the LA plans above that with metal flue and metal framing, etc., OR one installs a prefab fireplace and prefab pipes inside a chase enclosure. Or one removes the chimney completely and doesn't replace it with a new system, ending up with no fireplace." The buyer ended up backing out of the sale after using that report along with some other shady reports to try to knock $200,000 off of the agreed purchase price. We did not believe the report so had a different chimney inspection done on our own. The outcome was a recommendation to fix a small crack and clean the chimney. Total price $300 Since then we have had another buyer go into escrow who hired a different company to do an inspection on the house and the chimney inspection came through with flying colors, no problems at all. Two different Inspections post "The Chimney Guy" came back with no issues. My son had been living in the house for several years and had no issues with the fire place. The neighbor said the owners before that made a fire almost every night for 10 years, no problems. DON'T TRUST THIS COMPANY. In my opinion "The Chimney Guy" (Eddie T) either made up work to try to make more money OR was paid off by the buyer to give a bad report so that she could try to get the price down drastically.
