First, the receptionist always greets me warmly when I walk in. They let you know how much you'll end up paying--if anything--upfront, and you electronically sign forms consenting to payment, cleaning, etc. Because I crave staining food and drinks, I try to stay on top of brushing, flossing, and my dental checkups. When I first started going here, the dentist informed me I had the beginning of periodontal disease. So I tried to step up my oral hygiene game (do you know how long 2 minutes is? Whether it's brushing your teeth or running on a treadmill, it's forever). Anyway, this place is fantastic because they had me coming in every 3 months for a cleaning to slow down my periodontal disease. Then they informed me I now only need to come in every six months since this past year. That saved me money and made me trust this place even more. They have also repaired a chip on my tooth, and everyone from the receptionist to the dental hygienists and dentist is very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. The only downside is that I need an itemized receipt for my health spending account. While I understand they can't provide it immediately, they informed me they would email me a copy the following day or the beginning of the following week. This rarely happens, and I have to call them to email me the itemized receipt. Although I understand their busy schedules, three calls on the same day were necessary before they finally emailed the promised itemized receipt from the day before. I plan to keep this original, pearly white set of chompers with the current owner as long as possible. Thank you, Main Street Dental, for making that a reality - so far.

I found him to be arrogant and disrespectful…read more He humiliated me in front of his staff by shrugging his shoulders after I asked him what could be done about the ill fitting bridge he placed in my mouth! When I explained I had been biting my tongue and my cheek, he told me "that's a soft tissue issue" and told me to go to a periodontist! From the minute he placed this bridge, I told him it was too big! It was uncomfortable and I felt like I had a wad of gum behind my front teeth, and it even flew out of my mouth at a Christmas party last year! I waited six months to see if it felt any better and when it did not, I went to another dentist for a consultation. He agreed the bridge did not fit well and even contacted Dr. Babbitt to see if he would refund my money so it could be done properly. Dr. Babbitt refused to give even a partial refund and believed his work was perfect. Now, almost one year later, I need a root canal on one of the abutment teeth because the bridge does not fit right and bacteria made its way inside. I have been in excruciating pain for two weeks now as I try to gather the money for a root canal and another bridge. Lastly, my roots were exposed and I noticed they were discolored. I was told by Dr. Babbitt this was caused by brushing too hard and that it was just discoloration. I was NEVER told that what was actually happening was that my roots were decaying due to dry mouth caused by daily use of Flonase! He even said that because you couldn't see my gums when I smile, it isn't something that needed to be fixed. Had he emphasized that my roots were decaying at an alarming rate and I would need to fix the problem sooner than later, I would have made that priority and NOT gotten the bridge that I really didn't need. Base your decision to see this dentist with whatever information you have, but beware that this could happen to you too, so choose wisely.

"CT scans product more radiation than simple x-rays and we don't want to expose our patients to any more radiation than absolutely necessary." I didn't consider that, but it opened up my eyes to the thoughtfulness that the Doctors pay attention to when treating their patients. For context: I have avoided the dentist for years (regrettably and stupidly) and decided to finally come in to get an exam, to which they made me aware of the many cavities I had. The estimated services as well as my first examination, were definitely pricy, even with insurance. After the initial consultation, it made sense to me to hold off to try and save up for all the work I needed done. Once I eventually came in, Dr. Kane proceeded to interrogate me on why I did not schedule an appointment sooner, basically telling me I need to get my finances in order to get the work I needed done (which all makes total sense!). I explained that I am only working part-time at the moment since I am also going to school, so saving up takes a little longer than it would if I was only working--Dr. Kane was not satisfied with this response and continued to pry + lecture me. Although his intent seemed good, the delivery felt invasive. I did not appreciate him prying into my financial status, then proceeding to lecture me on finances/getting dental work done and then telling me I need to get my parents involved to help me pay; he even had the front desk give me a HIPAA form for my parents to sign and offered to call them personally. I understand the intention with wanting to help but Dr. Kane made me feel ashamed for taking a few months to get the funds needed for very expensive dental work. I am uncomfortable with making my parents fork over money for my self-inflicted issues, yet Dr. Kane was very insistent on getting them involved. I liked the practice up until this point. I don't deserve nor appreciate being shamed for not having an extra couple thousand dollars on hand! Additionally (and unrelated the previous experience), the front office has the tendency to call upwards of 5 times, with voicemails and texts to follow in one day just to confirm an appointment. I think a single call, with a single voicemail would suffice.

I was in desperate need of a cleaning, so I made an appointment at JFD's Ventura location as a new patient. In addition to the 25+ pages of documentation I had to fill out and sign online, a total that is beyond absurd, I had to sign another 10 forms in the office. This included multiple pages of paperwork affirming I would actually pay these guys when I was done. That means they must get stiffed on payments by patients all the time. That's not my problem. I showed up early for my appointment, and the guy at the front was as friendly and welcoming as a dragon from Game of Thrones. This guy must hate his job because he has the personality of an unflushed toilet. After waiting for 15 minutes (also ridiculous), I was taken back for X-rays and an exam, and then was told I had TO RETURN ANOTHER DAY for my cleaning. Seriously? I have never been a new patient at a dental practice and NOT received a cleaning on that day. To the office's credit, office manager Jennifer Valadez arranged for me to return the following today at 9:00 a.m. for the cleaning. Fine. And I did, but guess what? Even after arriving early for my appointment, I was kept waiting...and waiting...and waiting some more before I was taken back for my cleaning. Mr. GOT Receptionist asked me to pay for my portion, and then blamed me when the office's credit card reader malfunctioned. Really? He actually expected me to wait there while he fixed it. That's a hard pass, so I suggested remitting payment once my appointment had concluded. Then the hygienist did a very poor job on the polishing of my teeth, spending literally 45 seconds doing it. I asked her, "That's it? You only spend 45 seconds polishing patients' teeth?" Give me a break. When I complained to her, she reluctantly agreed to spend two minutes polishing my teeth. Geez. Worst cleaning ever. Finally, after signing even more forms, I paid and got out of there. I've never seen a dental practice conduct business this way. It boggles the mind, and it was such a miserable experience, I seriously doubt I will return. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID...AT ALL COSTS! UPDATE: I discovered after the fact, following the posting of this review, that Johnson Family Dental is NOT a local dental practice at all anymore. It is owned by Smile Brands, a multibillion-dollar medical conglomerate which has acquired hundreds of local dental practices across the country just like JFD. No wonder patient treatment and quality of service are so dreadful.

Dr Hahn and the team provide exceptional care and are super gentle, thoughtful during all the procedures, cleaning, x-rays and exams. Sugar Family Dental is everything I have been looking for - the staff and dentist are super kind, welcoming, gentle and honest! My previous experiences at other offices involved being told that I had multiple cavities and needed expensive deep cleanings. But not here - Dr. Sugar assured me that my teeth were in great shape :) COVID protocols are followed here to a T. They encourage filling out the forms online or through a link sent through a text message, which cuts down on the time filling them out on paper in the office. Once you park, you call the office and come right up with no wait in the waiting room. Everyone is fully masked and gloved, and there is hand sanitizer right at the door. Each room also has its own air purifier machine. Mary was my dental hygienist. She has an incredibly sweet manner and I could tell she knows how to deal with dentist-anxious people, haha! I have a small mouth and active gag reflex so I dread getting X-rays taken, but she was so fast and efficient. What was also great was that they do the X-rays right in your room, so you're not coming in contact with others. You also see each X-ray pop up on a TV screen right in front of you, which I thought was cool. After that, she did an oral health screening (I know this since she talked me though each step!). She checked under my tongue, my throat and felt gently around the lymph node area of my neck. I've never had that done at a dentist office and really liked the extra step in checking! Then came the cleaning. She used a fancy scaler tool which shoots out a tiny stream of water (like a Water Pik) that she said gets into all the crevices of the teeth. She combined this with using the regular metal tools to scrape all the gunk off. My teeth definitely felt EXTRA clean! Oh I almost forgot - during the cleaning she put a pillow under my neck! Such a small step but it made me so much more comfortable. I almost fell asleep at times. Next, I was checked for gum recession (you know when they poke your gums and call out the numbers?). Mary was very thorough, checking multiple spots on each tooth along front and back. After that was the polishing and flossing. I love when they floss for you because I don't like flossing and that's why I have to be good about going to the dentist, lol. Then Dr. Sugar introduced herself (yes, that's really her name!) and checked my teeth again, went over my X-Rays and asked me of any concerns I had. I had already gotten the gentle reminder from the hygienist to floss more so I'm glad Dr. Sugar focused on my concerns (specifically, teeth whitening and the extra clenching I started doing during Covid). I didn't feel rushed or lectured to, which I have in prior offices. She has the kindest demeanor and assured me that me teeth and gums were looking healthy, WOOHOO. No upselling whatsoever! The last part, which I have never before experienced, was that I was offered a HOT TOWEL to clean up! It smelled like lavender and made me feel like I was a celebrity VIP :) THANK YOU Sugar Family Dental. Now I don't have to dread going to the dentist!
