The breakfast was delicious and our waitress was friendly and joked with us. I had the egg's florentine Benedict with homefries which was really good accept the hollandaise wasn't very flavorful. My cousin and dad got the strawberry banana French toast (good but VERY sweet/more fruit than toast) and the biscuits and sausage with gravy. I used to come here all the time when I lived in Derry. It was always amazing. The last time I was here, Yelp and review sites didn't even exist. I was so happy to see it was just as I remembered. The place is very very busy. However, every person moved with a purpose, no one was standing around, the food was great and fast. Suzanne (with 2 N's) made me a killer Bloody Mary, was very polite and attentive. The nostalgic ambiance and many years of found memories may even have caused a tear to fall. Music from the 50's and 60's is played as you look upon neon signs and pictures of Elvis, The Beatles, The Beach Boys And Pink Floyd just to name a few. The tables even have a neat design as advertising sits underneath the glass. A definite lively place. Also check out all the presidential hopefuls as you exit...this is a MAJOR stop in the New Hampshire primary season. Food itself is usually good. At times I wish the serving size could be slightly larger depending on what you order but they have so many to serve here. Price range is good for brunch. I have had some weird family mishaps/moments here and so maybe that affected my rating. It's not entirely on them. Business wise this place is 4 stars. Definitely recommend if in area. read more

The coffee is emblematic of "diner coffee", so don't get your hopes up very high-- it will be hot and has caffeine, but will not be a bold-flavored coffee. Would give ZERO stars if I could. Salem location is MUCH better. Ordered takeout. A very simple 2 meal takeout order for breakfast. We were missing the following. -Toast for both orders that came with toast -Side of home fries completely missing -No syrup for an order that had pancakes and French toast and specifically asked for syrup This wouldn't be the end of the world, it happens people make errors, but when calling , the girl on the phone was so rude, I was kind of in shock. She literally said "Uh-Huh" when I mentioned this, as if like, yeah well what do you want me to do? Instead of literally any other customer service response to rectify the situation. Even a simple "I'm sorry that happened" would have sufficed. It's not like I even asked for a refund or something....... MARY ANNS DINER GOING OUT OF BUSINESS (Derry Location) Sad to see this place go downhill. I've been going to this place for 7 years. For a few years I often went 3 times a day. What I often saw was a waitress named Linda rubbing people the wrong way. Then I found out she was at the diner since it opened in 1989. Lately I overheard other waitresses complaining about how she complains about everything and then stands around all the time. I saw this myself. She was rough around the edges and many times I heard her say things to others in a way that made me loose my appetite, but thankfully I have a strong stomach. She smokes a lot, I mean like every 15 minutes, and that may be the reason she's so uptight. The staff has stated that business has been sliding downhill since September. I've also noticed the quality of food isn't the same, my cats won't even eat the leftovers as they used to. There's locations in Windham and Salem that will still be happy to serve you. The only way to keep the Derry location in business would be to fire Linda, if possible, I think she owns part of the restaurant. There's no other reason to keep someone that none of the staff likes. Today was the last straw. I was invited to demonstrate virtual reality in the back room to 4 waitresses for showing how the Birthday parties would go. Two minutes into Chrystal trying it Linda comes back and says "Hey, what are you doing ?, pulls her headset off, get back to work!". I said "what?". Linda says "She's on the clock she doesn't need to be doing this virtual reality stuff". It was so condescending. I had enough, said she was being a "bitch", packed up and called her a "bitch" again as I left. I bowed saying "I'm glad I was strong enough to say it for everyone else". I will never be back unless they fire Linda and pay me $2,000 up front. But since the place is going out of business it doesn't matter anymore. I came to MaryAnn's pretty excited about a 4 star rating after 40 + reviews, past the level of statistical significance and usually a good indication that something special is going on here. Unfortunately however, not special enough for me to give it anything more than a passing grade at best. I am just downright disappointed. When a business gets 4 stars after that many reviews, the fake ones and family and friends have been pushed to the margins so you generally have a good chance of hitting a real gem. So not the case here, now don't get me wrong, MaryAnn's is perfectly enjoyable with the period decor and 50's kitsch, even the waitresses hairstyles, visually it is great fun but culinary the food is just , well, ordinary. The Build Up: I love diners, diner food and diner ambiance, Diners, IMO, are the most authentically American culinary experience we have after apple pie and the Dollar Menu. Happy Days, Alice, and the use of popcorn tubs to get close to your date have no equivalent outside of the USA. Let me wash down that burger with a shake. So a Yelp 4 star nostalgic throwback in NH had me expecting plenty of home made yumminess covered in lots of gravy and cheese. Could not wait to see what the fuss about, I was hungry and happy to be here! I am not going to trash the place and say how bad i it was, it was not horrible, it was OK, passable, nothing special. Food wise, it was EXACTLY as 2 stars indicate, "Meh. I've experienced better." Here are my beefs... 1. Canned corned beef hash? Why bother, just use Alpo 2. Frozen pre -cooked chicken fried streak, just like a Banquet TV dinner, you can get them at 7-11. 3. Fake ( from a mix) Hollandaise sauce. OK, To be FAIR, I have never had real Hollandaise sauce in a diner anywhere but the long since closed Blue Diner in Boston and Eggs Benedict is not really a diner staple, but it would have justified the 4 star...but mix? I'm sorry Knorr is Knasty! BUT the KISS OF DEATH, watching the waitresses 'marry' old ketchup bottles and fill the old, almost empty Heinz bottles with bulk from a #10 can, and then wipe off the orange smudges to make the bottles look less used. LIFO KETCHUP ACCOUNTING! Ketchup is not like salt, you just don't re-fill the old bottle, ( well, you can, but just THINK about how gross it gets after a few years, never quite making it to the garbage to be replaced with a fresh bottle, just add a bit of new stuff on top of the old, room temperature, unrefrigerated petri dish contents, YUMMY!! Soo MaryAnns is like most of the other diners out there in pretty much all diner aspects, but it is sure not worth 4 stars! That's like getting on the honor role for a B- grade average. read more

I've been here about a dozen times and have tried enough food to make an informed review at this point. It's really nothing special. The fact that it's one of the only 50's style diners in the area is the hook, but I come for food, not nostalgia. The best thing I've had on the menu is the Black Raspberry steak tips, they are expensive, but worth the money, being cooked perfectly both times I've had them. The eggs are fluffy and the majority of the food isn't greasy like in a lot of diners. Most of what I had is average including the pancakes, waffles and home fries and most of our staple breakfast foods. The lines to get in on the weekends are unbelievable, a lot like Maddie's in Salem, NH and it's just not worth the wait for some place so average. For some reason, they can't do french fries properly. They are always wet and undercooked, even when I ask for them to not be, they will always come out like that. Old fashion diner, generic old fashion photos, with old fashion music music playing in the background - my mother was in love! The girls wearing poodle skirts were a cute touch and though parking could theoretically be a huge pain we managed to snag a spot just out front no problem. We sat quickly, then the vinyl gods of bee bop took over and the service took a cascading decent from 75 rpm - 16 within minutes (I wonder how many young people will get that reference). A hair was the first thing I saw when my food was put in front of me, BLAH! I'm pretty understanding (for the most part) and totally get that stuff happens (I suppose), and because I will never (EVER) send food back with a complaint and I was so stinking hungry I cut off a large enough portion around the hair in question away from my food and prepared myself for a less that satisfactory meal (don't judge me!). So what did I see when I took my next (first) forkful? More flipping hair!! I don't know who they have working in the kitchen (sasquatch, chewbaca, the hairy guy from the Adams Family), but I had a great time thinking about it on the way home unfed and hungry. This is a 50s themed restaurant that apparently prides itself on quantity over quality. My wife and I had to fill up before going off in a hike and climb. Driving north on 102, we spotted MaryAnn's and decided to stop. The waitresses all played the 50s part wearing long poodle skirts. Kind of cool atmosphere. I ordered the hash and cheese (cheddar from a selection of four) omelette. My wife wanted blueberry pancakes and was ready to order three. Our server quickly noted the pancakes were huge and that two would be fine, if she wanted a third afterwards they could quickly bring one out. My omelette was huge, stuffed to the gill with hash. There was a large amount of home-fries on the side. I ordered wheat toast. The toast was the tastiest part of my meal. The hash was primarily diced potatoes with some corned beef that added little if any flavor. The home-fries were hot, but bland. Would have liked some seasoning and maybe some onion mixed in. Large order, little taste. My wife's pancakes were equally disappointing, if not more. Yeah they were huge as our waitress suggested, and two were enough, but the blueberries were extremely sour/bitter. I understand they may be out of season, but these were unappetizing and should not have been used. They were also also clumped in the center if the cakes, not distributed throughout the cake batter. It's like they poured the batter on the grill and threw a handful of bitter blueberries in the middle. Our waitress was terrific. She deserves a star herself.
