I an a diner guy. Mary's is a diner. It was just a matter of time. Yesterday the stars aligned, and I made the 48 mile trip. Huge parking lot fairly full but, surprisingly, no wait time. Interesting list of specials by the entrance. The affable and efficient Karen was my server. I opted for Mary's omelet (when in Rome...). 3 eggs, with tomato, spinach, and feta; w home fries and rye toast. Coffee came quickly. As I do in many diners, I asked Karen if she could get me a ballpark figure of how many dozen eggs they go through in a typical week. She came back quickly. Converting to eggs, Mary's goes through approx 4,320 eggs / wk. Wow!!! The hens are thinking of unionizing and the roosters, although they won't admit it, are exhausted. Back to the food. The omelet was eggggcellent. Just the right amount of feta, which popped w each bite. HFs lightly spiced. Service (Karen) was excellent, as was food and value. Recommended. 4.5 stars read more

Yesterday was a very big day, and I have several reviews to catch up on. To start it off, let's take a trip to Mary's Diner for breakfast and see what this diner is all about. This was the only business I visited yesterday that was in the state of Connecticut. This is because this is where I wanted to have some breakfast before I caught the 8:45 am train to go to New York City, so I made my way here around 6 and got there maybe about half an hour after I started walking. There was a regular who got there less than a minute before I did. When I got there, we were actually the only two customers in the diner, so I decided to take my seat in the same stretch of the bar area as him, about three seats away. This is important to note because this gave me the chance to actually meet the owner, and I liked this because it gave me an introduction to what the owner's life is like, both in and out of the business. Later on in my visit we as well as that regular talked about New York City and Metro-North transportation policies which was pretty cool. And yes, Mary is quite friendly. Finally, regulars here get treated like family, so I can definitely see family becoming friends and friends becoming family in this diner. The interior of the place has a very elegant look to it. While Waterbury itself may be one of the least safe cities in this state to live in, you have to admit that Waterbury is not shy about having business that at least have the look of being on the fancier side of things. There's a patio that gives it outdoor seating as well as an atrium that overlooks that outdoor seating if you prefer to eat away from the dining area. The pictures on the way provide a window into not only Waterbury's past, but also some landmarks else in the world like the Eiffel Tower. My order was pretty simple. I did the Belgian Waffle with a side of bacon as well as two cups of coffee. I did also get to see what the other guy ordered (he didn't really need to say much about what they wanted because he'd been coming here a long time). If my taste buds were different then I could see myself ordering something to what he did because the presentation looked nice enough. This was some oatmeal with blueberries on top, a few hard-boiled eggs, and toasted English muffin. What can I say? You eat with your eyes first. Going back to my order, I put some syrup on my waffle and bacon. and ate away. It was a fluffy waffle, very easy to cut with a knife so that I can eat. It's an overall good, filling breakfast that would have no problem tying me over to when I get lunch once I got to Brooklyn. The coffee was good as well. The price wasn't bad either. I was charged about $18 for what I got which is about on par with other diners in this state I've been to not named Elm Street Diner. Honestly, rating this diner is a tricky because it could go either way between a 4 or a 5. I did round the last diner I had this conundrum with down to a 4, so this time I decided to do the opposite and round this up to the full 5. This is a very good diner that I think those passing by in Waterbury should definitely try out. read more

This diner gets high marks because the staff is always friendly. And no matter how packed the parking lot is, I've never had to wait for a table. I may drive around looking for a parking spot but I've yet to have to wait for a table inside the establishment. This says a lot because their parking lot is big. The inside appears small but they have a patio with an enclosed or outdoor option. I came at brunch time 11 am on a Saturday. It was packed hut not overcrowded. This is a diner that is friendly for children. They have a kids breakfast and lunch menu. With many side items you can order. They have specials that they offer. I opted for the soup d'jour with a sandwich. The soup was the star of the day. It was manhattan clam chowder which o haven't had in quite some time. It was a nice reminiscent meal from my childhood- oh how I loved when my mom made me manhattan clam chowder. I finished every bit of my soup and could've ordered more to go. It was savory with a bit of spice. I did not add anything to it. The chunks of clam were not big and honestly they didn't stand out, but it was still an amazing soup just because it was unexpected. The sandwich was boring - roast beef with options of lettuce, mayo, and tomato ( and thread choices - white, rye, Italian). I hot roasted Italian bread. The toast was a bit browner than I'd have liked- not their fault everyone is different. To add onions would've been an up charge- I considered it but I was heading to a basketball game I didn't want to pay extra for stinky breath. They did allow me to have horseradish instead of mayo. And I had coffee that my waitress made sure was full at all times. My boys loved their food. One had the chocolate chip pancakes from the kids meal with sausage. The other had the Caesar salad wrap from the regular menu. The portion sizes were huge. Our bill was less than $50 which is saying a lot for all that we had to eat. And everyone ordered what they wanted without being limited by the time of the day. I love this diner and will head back often. Mary's is comfort food at its finest. My go to order is a grilled cheese w/ bacon & a cup of fruit as the side. My waitress was sweet as the pie they serve. She was on her A game & took care of me. My grilled cheese bread was buttered up & crisp in all the right places. My bacon was crunchy & the cheese was cheesing. My fruit was very fresh & refreshing. Inside is cozy & comforting like a grandma's living room but w/o the plastic covers on the couch. It was very sparkling clean including the bathrooms which honestly deserves its own round of applause. read more

I will not return to that diner again and will let my friends know! Older ppl do not eat that much and do like to split their food! No place should charge a fee to share food! Got a to go order if today's French Toast and a Western Egg sandwich w/,hash browns. The French toast was cooked to perfection with a creamy filling. Thewestern was loved by my hubby. A hearty home style sandwich with lots of Egg mixture pile in and a ton of flavor. Both meals were delicious, filling and reasonably priced. The diner was immaculate, bright and spacious. Majority of the tables are booths so it was a cozy setting to walk into when it was cold and rainy outside. Our waiter was polite and attentive and stated his recommendations when my dad ordered the Chicken Souvlaki and wasn't sure about its ingredients at first (he can be picky) our waiter stated that 'you won't regret it' also he and two other people (that I noticed) are Greek so of course we had to trust his opinion lol. I do not recommend coming here while it's busy. The place its to crowded and the staff are running all over the place. I waited to get a coffee refill for over 8 minutes, I also asked other staff to help me out and they didn't. I understand they ate busy and thats good for them but if the waitress is gonna ignore my table then they should hire more staff. They also got my son's order wrong and i waited for the waitress to come back to exchange it but it took her a while and my 5 year couldn't wait. I had to ask for water 3 times until I finally got a cup of water. Also the food it's kinda expensive. I was here yesterday on election day 11.3.20 and the place was pretty packed. I ordered but after sitting there for about 10 minutes and studying the entire restaurant I realized I had to leave. The social distancing wasn't being adhered to. Not being enforced. There were too many people almost on top of each other. Yes, a little exaggeration but you kind of get the picture. There were too many people in the restaurant at one time. It was over the mandated 50% capacity. The staff was nice but extremely busy. I got up and paid for my order and told them that I needed it to go which was a great call. I'm not jeopardizing my health just to sit and have breakfast in a restaurant. They recently moved from down or up the street to a different building that used to be called Jimmy's ll. This move to this different location happened at some point between September 2020 & October 2020. Today is election day November 3rd 2020 that I'm here. This restaurant was remodeled from an existing breakfast and it's in very good shape. It looked clean from what i saw. Downfall. Big Downfall - waitress bright me a cup of water and delivered it to me with her hand in top of the cups rim where i would normally drink from and put my mouth on. But not today. Even though she left me a straw. I pushed it over to the other side of the table and left it there. The omelette that I took to go tasted good. Decent amount of cheese. There were a bountiful amount of home fried potatoes which were also good and fresh. The wheat toast was also good. They also gave enough of most of the condiments in the to go bag. Downfall- they didn't give me any jelly for the toast. Been coming to Mary's for about 10 years or so. This place is your typical small-town diner with a popular floor layout and interior design. Food was about average, despite having it later in the day due to an unexpected change of plans. Where this place excelled was service! The staff was terrific and completely understanding after I grabbed my coffee and breakfast! The server seemed very peppy and seemed to enjoy her job! Everything I ordered is the hungry man special and a sandwich which came out to 19.50 before tip. I don't think this place is good for band for your buck but as a once in a time place it's ok. Just left here, HATE leaving bad reviews but this was a complete s*** show! We and the 3 tables around us waited well over an hour -(first strike). My poached eggs finally arrived like tennis balls, the home fries were a plate of mush despite asking for well done. (2nd strike) It gets worse, as we we're going to pay, which I was going to make them take my part off the bill, the one that's always at the register with the perpetual scowl was calling the elderly customer a BITCH!!!! because she was expressing complaints of her own, she also laughed at her as she was leaving. She only took a small portion of my breakfast off the bill because I had already gone out to the car and my husband was paying. I'd like to say that this was just maybe a bad day but according to everyone around me this place is a nightmare! Now they always fill the to go orders before dealing with the people that are eating inside, the phone was ringing off the hook constantly. I have a small business, I never do this, never, ever but they more than deserve this, I'd rather starve then go to this place again. I will however say that the wait staff was very nice and she felt bad. Worst experience I've had eating out in I don't know how long, do yourself a favor and keep going. This spot is a little gem. Took my wife out for breakfast and I was not disappointed. I had Mary's omelet and it was delicious. You can tell the spinach and Feta were fresh. Corned beef hash was very food and the home fries were delicious. Waitress was very attentive and staff were polite. Definitely has a nice vibe where people of all ages can enjoy. I was looking for a liver, onion and bacon lunch special which I usually eat at Jimmy's Restaurant in Watertown but because they closed early today I decided to keep on driving down rte. 63 and through Oakville, looking for another diner. I took a right onto Watertown Ave. and was happy to find Mary's Diner. I was pleasantly surprised with the food, especially the cleanliness of the place and they had liver on the menu. The service was good, I ate, and then the check came. I have a habit of checking prices and totals so I did what I do and noticed I was being charged an extra buck for my lunch item. I walked to the register and simply brought it to the attention of the person who was at the register but unfortunately was met with resistance. After a few mins. of not being acknowledged I dropped it and asked if she was the owner. She said yes. I then proceeded to tell her how good the food was and how clean her restaurant was. She chose to withdraw and ignore. I looked over at the 8" of checks from today's patrons and thought, 'apparently she doesn't need my business." So to sum it up, the food was good diner food and the restaurant was clean, but the owner needs to work on her customer service skills. I give her an F in this category. I used to love Mary's when they had their smaller establishment. It was always on point with good customer service food and ambiance. Ever since their expansion all of that has been left behind. Especially their customer service. I recently ordered out from here and I had to repeatedly shout my order over the phone and even after going over the order several times I still received the wrong food. The first time they gave me double of two meals and I didn't notice because I had ordered a lot and trusted they gave me the correct items. Not that there is even space to check your food as there's always a cluster of other customers in the cashier area. Still I let it go at the chance it was a one off mistake. On another occasion I made sure to check and came to find that one of the boxes was missing it's bacon. When calling, the woman on the phone lied about what the kids meal came with and told me to come back 20 mins in a storm for one piece of bacon in an attempt to address the mistake. To me it's never really the food it's the principle she didn't care it wasn't the first time they lacked attention for take out orders.It just seems as they are relying on the fact you won't drive all the way back to fix their mistake.
