If this store relied on customer service and kindness, there would be no business. As mentioned in the reviews, the woman who runs it seems to be the most unhappy person and it reflects in your interactions with her whether buying or consigning with her. This place is a gem for vintage and second hand fashion...and I would say - sure, it may be disheveled at times but the smallness of the place and great pieces (all range of vintage and designer) make it totally manageable. The owner knows what to buy/consign. I went into Mary's Exchange on a whim 5 years and ever since, I've found some thing cool almost every time - from rare vintage dosa to the more stylish Patagonia pieces to avant garde Japanese denim to reliable boho Ulla Johnson to quality Acne Studio etc etc. The owner let you be when you go in - she may not be chit chatty all the time but aren't we all. read more

Disorganized, cluttered, not clean. When I was there the owner didn't acknowledge me the entire time. The place is small and there were only 2 customers there. Then a customer came in. She wanted to exchange or return some boots she bought last week that were damaged. I would recommend to check the quality of the items before you purchase. Had a great first experience consigning and buying at Mary's today. She thoughtfully went through all the items I brought in and nicely explained what she was looking for and what she picked and why. You have 60 days for your items to sell and just need to come back into the shop to get your check. I shopped around after and got an adorable linen dress for under $30! I have 2 MAJOR complaints. I think I was told to leave the store today after still going there periodically for leaving a poor rating on Yelp awhile ago. I also want to warn anyone who brings clothes into consign to make sure you get paid then they sell your valued clothes. This is what happened to me in the past and today. 3 months ago I brought in about 10 items of clothing that the owner liked. I checked in the store each week out of curiosity to see if anything of mine was sold. After less than a month, all the items of clothing that I bought in (except 1 skirt) was gone. I asked the owner if they were sold and she told me "probably" and I would soon get a check. I NEVER got a check for the items that were sold. And, I know it wasn't long enough for them to be donated! So, in fact, they ripped me off by keeping whatever proceeds they got for themselves. I should not have let this go, but I did. Now, I occasionally browse the store when I'm in the neighborhood - like today. Just a few weeks ago, I found a nice pair of ankle boots that I liked which I bought despite the Consignment Issue. Today, I stopped in while taking a walk in Noe Valley, and while I was looking at the clothes, I think it's the daughter of the owner who approached me and said "I'd rather not have you shopping at this store". Huh? I had no idea why and so I asked her. She replied, it's better not to discuss it. I insisted upon an explanation, but got none. The only reason I could possibly think of was she recognized me on this site after giving a poor review. I was very insulted and left. I was going to dismiss writing a review about stealing my consignment money, but not after this. I've never done anything wrong in this store - just give them business and clothes. And, the store still smells funny! read more

Within 5 minutes of browsing I had found a sexy red Free people silk dress for $30, a gorgeous floral Betsy Johnson for $30, a soft, edgy Anthropologie tank top for $20, and a HOT HOT HOT black and white vintage baby doll dress in mint condition for $20. I actually grabbed my goodies and ran to the checkout counter, afraid of what I might find next. I finished my transaction, turned around to leave, and hanging in the window saw a cream Hanni Y jacket that was calling my name. I tried it on and felt like a fashionista...the jacket probably cost $500 or more when originally purchased...I got it for $60. Who knows - maybe I got lucky. But I think this is my new favorite store! read more

GREAT finds of VINTAGE and MOCK-UP coats. They have jeans and other miscellaneous items, but it was cold, I didn't have a coat, and I was up for a little FRIVOLOUS spending. As I perused the racks, I saw the coat of my liking. The only problem: a pregnant lady with another baby attached to her by a sling had it in her hands. My thoughts: "Damn she didn't waste any time with kid #2" and "That's MY coat" and "It's SO not going to fit you, put it down!" I kept a sly eye on her as I picked up a few "okay-looking" coats off the racks. Sure enough, the coat did not fit her, and she draped it on a hanger and replaced it on a rack toward the front of the store. As I tried to look casual in my continued scan of other coats, a few new patrons entered, and I was NOT about to lose that coat to someone else. I abandoned all pretense and SNATCHED that sucker off the rack and headed for the tiny dressing room in the back of the store. As luck would have it, it fit! My one concern was the fact it had SAMPLE written in thick letters on the inside of the lining. The sales person explained this coat was a SAMPLE MOCK-UP made by the designer. It had never been worn before, and carried similar quality as the final product. This coat, I was told, would normally retail for about $200, but as it was a sample (that that conspicuously written on it) they were selling it for $65. After vacillating for about 5 minutes, I went for the SPLURGE. I knew NO ONE ELSE would have the coat, and no one would see the writing on the inside unless I showed it to them. I have now had the coat since November 2006, and worn it as my main outerwear since. It has held up pretty well. The material is wool, so it's pilling in the areas that get the most friction. In addition, the stitching around the button holes came out, so that needs to be redone. I'm very happy I know how to SEW. Overall, I think the PRICING could be lower for items such as what I bought - but then again it is located in NOE Valley. Otherwise, interesting selection and occasional JEWEL finds. read more

Like any other consignment place, you definitely have to invest some time here since the space is tiny and it's packed. More modern stuff, but some great true vintage (50's - 70's) as well, mostly in excellent condition. Particularly good selection of handbags. My last trip scored 5 items for $130: pair of jeans, pair of cropped black pants, 2 pretty blouses, and a pair of leather sling-backs. While I like the selection at Kris' on Polk better, I can at least afford Mary's Exchange! read more

Weeellllll. It all began once upon a Friday eve when my Gentleman callers drinking buddy came back from his summer of Love in Paris. Yes, as all fine summers in Paris do, this one ended with a romantic engagement of the best kind, which in turn led to a night of drunken debauchery with my handsome fella, and that, well that let to said fella engaging in dialing while drinking to a certain gal, that gal being me, 5 times in row, between 2 and 4 am. I, being Russian and fiery, had to yell and make all manner of a fuss over the loss of my beauty rest. Needless to say, I woke up the next day a very unhappy girl, and set up my phone to wait for an apology that I was SURE was on its way. 3 hours later and no phone call, I was forced out onto the streets of Noe Valley, a lass in need of a rock, a weeping willow in need of a cool breeze, a lady in need of a fucking cell phone apology call. Enter Mary's exchange. Oh my. Cheese on peas and knock the white off rice this was just what the doctor ordered! The owner was there and she knows her stuff! I bought the most wonderful pair of green velvet 60's pumps, all done up with chunky heels and matching bow. This amazing jacket, bright green with polka dots, cinched at the waist just so with a peter pan collar, very Stepford Wives meets french tramp, and then, because I was having so much fun I completely forgot phones even existed, much less refused to ring, this darling pair of imitation jade earrings that matched my eyes like a pair of dyed prom satin pumps. $115 dollars made me feel like $115 million. Ah! I tripped home, banged through the door of my bunny hutch, and wouldn't you know it, just as I was imagining myself cruising the singles ads again, lonely but well dressed, guess who calls and announces he'll be showing up on my door on 30 minutes. Well. Mary had mellowed me, and what could I say? Ladies, you know how the story ends. In the door he sweeps, lays those lovely eyes upon me and says, ' Hey Babe, I'm so sorry, are those new earrings? They make you look beautiful'. I stared, tough like, and said, firmly, ' You owe me $115!'. And I got the most wonderful I'm yours smile, and c'mon, whats a girl to do? You find a fella in this town who likes the ladies and will watch how you twirl in your brand new cuter than cute stepford wife meets french harlot coat and appreciate every bright green dot, every inch of the cinched waist, even lets you try on six different shoes to see which one matches only to settle on the aforementioned beribboned green velvets? Plus, he's so darn handsome I could swoon. So yes. I adore Mary's. You try, you'll see! read more

Amazing selection of knit wear! I purchased a long cardigan (Vince), black cashmere sweater (Theory), and precious knitted top (Margaret OLeary). Prices ranged from $30-60, which is incredibly reasonable given the quality of each item. I've sworn off buying cheap knitwear from retail stores and will be going to Mary's from now on to get high-quality luxurious designer knits at affordable prices. There were lots of dresses (Theory, Nanette Lepore) that I had my eyes on as well. I walked out feeling like I had shopped the closet of a fashionable (wealthy) friend who dresses in Eileen Fisher. Hello, I work at Mary's Exchange and just wanted to give a few tips on consignment and general info...a FAQ list, if you will. Q: What kind of clothes do we have? A: Mary's Exchange prices start at about $15 and go up from there. As the review said above, we always have new samples in- right now there's a lot of cute cropped jackets and vintage-inspired lightweight coats from Sashimi and a rack of new Flax samples. There's definitely a mix here of hip, trendy clothes (Marc Jacobs, Anthropologie brands, Michael Stars, tons of designer jeans like Seven, Paper, Citizens of Humanity, Paper, Denim & Cloth, Joes...etc), brands like Flax, Chico's, Eileen Fisher and J. Jill, and work wear from Theory, Banana Republic, J. Crew, and Tahari (yes, there is a suit section.) We also have items from great local designers like Weston Wear, Rebecca Beeson, and Margaret O'Leary. In the winter, we specialize in cashmere. Q: What are we looking for? A: Clothes that are three years old or newer and are in style and in season. If you want to unload a bunch of 80's suits with shoulder pads or stretched-out baby tees, this is not the place. However, if you have cute stuff that you know you won't wear (You know, that cute designer top with the tag still on it that's lurking in your closet) but would like to make some money off of, consider consigning! We also accept vintage, bags, shoes, and non-costume jewelry. Q: What are the consigment hours? A: Drop-in hours are Sunday- Friday from 12:00 to 3:30. (If you can't get in during those hours, please call for an appointment.) Q: How should I bring things in? A: No more than 20 items should be brought in at a time, and please make sure they're clean and pressed and in good condition- meaning, please don't throw a bunch of your old dirty clothes in a garbage bag and expect us to sift through them! (The better they look, the better they will sell.) Bring them in straight from your closet on hangers instead- we'll give them right back when we're done going through the consignment. Q: Why consign instead of selling your clothes outright? A: You make a lot more money on them- the split is 50/50, unlike at all those buy/resell places where you often leave wondering why you just received $4 for something you paid $140 for. read more

I have been to Mary's Exchenge several times..........Typically there is a good assortment of clothing and accessories to choose from. Today I found a cute top with no price tag and a pair of jeans to try. I asked for a dressing room but Mary was busy so I waited until she finished what she was doing......After she finished with the client she ignored me and started pricing new clothes that were brought in........ I found this really really RUDE! I went to ambiance instead and paid more money but at least I wasn't ignored. I will never shop here ever again and I will advise my friends to do the same. read more

I recently cleaned out my closet and had two huge bags full of clothing and shoes. Most of the items were from Banana Republic, Gap, J Crew, Nordies and the such. As well they were still in season, clean and in great shape. I just didn't need any longer. I took them to some "big name" consignment shops and they basically dug threw the bags and took nothing. I went to Mary's as her shop is in our neighborhood. She took everything and sold it all. I was happy that someone got the things that I use to love and I made $200. It may be a little dismay but she has a GREAT selection of clothing and shoes. As well if you are patient and show a little kindness, she is a gem to work with. read more

I really don't understand reviewer (typical crazy yelp person) Trudi N's vitriol. For me Mary's has always a been a great place to find unique and reasonably priced vintage items. I just bought a 70s sweater dress from them a couple months ago and get quite a few compliments on it. I have also consigned with them years ago and the owner was very professional about it...And you actually earn some good money from consigning your clothes here, unlike when lug a giant bag of crap to Buffalo exchange and they pick out a single dingy New Kids on the Block shirt and give you 50 cents. Oh Brother don't!! messy-unkept--rude behavior to consigners. Didn't know about there strange-not fair description of consignment. consign here!! brought in some clothes-jewelry-Expensive perfect Gucci purse..etc they gave me a list but refused to put prices on that the items would be sold for.I didn't like the idea of leaving my things without prices because it can be sold according to whatever the owner wants & who says what you get!!!!Especially a perfect Gucci purse worth thousands of dollars. This business practice is not what I am use to & went back three times where I could not get them to write in the price. Today I went in the owner screamed & hollered at me for wanting the prices- Also, was yelling & so rude I decided to not leave the other things I had for the store. The whole time she was yelling calling me a nut for wanting the prices listed I decided to take all my things out of the dirty dingy store. She was going to make me wait while she waited on customers to get her money but that was not going to happen. I did sell one item that was left there. I must say it is such a relief to bring your decent clothes to be consigned and not be treated rudely as in the chain second hand stores in the city. I love this this is a neighborhood store and the owners know my name. I also think they have a great selection of clothes from vintage to current. Being in my 40's I have outgrown the other hipster clothes of the other stores. Mary's has a great selection for all ages, not just the 20 year olds. I have found many unique (mostly modern) pieces that I have worn a lot and I have brought in many clothes for consignment without ever having had a problem.
