Food was good but took a bit to come out. When we walked in we were not greeted, more so ignored. Waitress walked by and never said anything. We were expecting a "someone will be right with you" or a "Hey welcome in, I'll grab the hostess". Instead we stood waiting until the hostess came out from the back and saw we were there. The whole place is very dated but not in a bad way. It gives a very homey feel and I was surprised that it was very clean because usually older restaurants like this that still has curtains from the 80's are all nasty and dusty BUT this place was clean and well kept! Great service. Pecan Waffles excellent! All you can eat friday fish fry - excellent. All you can eat was haddock. They also have perch. Fries were coated(not a fan of coated fries. I was there at 7:55 ish, on a Friday night. I was in the mode for fried / Broasted chicken. The open sign was on, the door was open and the dining room was empty. A guy met me at the host station and he asked me I was there to pickup to? I told him no, I wanted to dine in. No, he said, kitchen is closed, but the lettering on the door and the web says 8:30 close. I walked away and then went back. "So I don't do this again. Your open till 8:30, correct?", "Well, not tonight. Can I get you something To go?" "So, the kitchen is not closed? and maybe you would serve food to me?" I presume you are a manager." "Well, I'm sorry it is closed." It was a nice attempt. I heard from a friend that the chicken was signature level and the soups are as well. So, I can't write about the food, or service. Do I plan to return to a sit down place a couple of miles from my home? Ah, no. Turn off your open sign if you are not open. We came on a Sunday around 1pm. It was still busy and there was a line of about 15 people in front of us however it moved quickly. After around 15 minutes, we got seated. The server was quick to take our drink and food orders. The specials were a great deal price wise. The dumpling soup was amazing. The broasted chicken was freshly made and some of the best I've ever had. The ribs were also good and fell right off the bone. They do not serve any alcohol. The decor was of an old school diner however was very clean. When you get your check, you pay up front. They have a refrigerator near the front where you can buy prepackaged soups to go. I have eaten at Mary's several times, and always found it enjoyable. However my recent visit was horrible, and bears review. I arrived at 6pm on a Saturday evening, expecting to order Tenderloin tips and they were already out. I realize it's a popular item, but it was still early and they should not have been out of them. A good restaurant anticipates, and prepares extra of popular items. After looking at the menu, I ordered a turkey club sandwich and the waitress brought me a BLT. When I reminded her what I had ordered, she insisted I had said BLT. So now, I've been disappointed twice but being hungry I opted to eat the BLT that was brought to me. It was horrid. The bread had not been toasted in a toaster, but just tossed in the oven to toast, and it was hard as a rock. Also, I asked for hash browns instead of french fries, and they were greasy. When I went to pay, the hostess asked me the standard question if everything was OK. I told her no, it was terrible. She didn't even care. Just gave a curt "I'm sorry," and took my money. I asked her "Don't you want to know why it was terrible?" Without going into the other things, I just mentioned how disappointed I was that they were out of the Tenderloin Tips. I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant today. Recognizing that it was a busy Saturday morning, and we were a party of six (3 adults, 3 toddlers), still the level of service was far subpar. In fact we really didn't get any service at all. We were seated for 10 minutes, and had to ask for a server to help us. A few minutes later a server came over and took a drink order, and another 10 minutes passed without getting our drinks, and without getting to place a food order. Meanwhile, there was another group seated next to us that got served immediately. Very much seemed like nobody wanted to help us because we had three kids with us. Would not recommend coming here with kids, and I personally will probably never come here again. Not impressed. The place could use new carpets and furniture, but more importantly it could use a good cleaning. The server was friendly, but the person at the register was surly. I picked at the food because it just didn't look good. What little I ate was okay, in a greasy spoon kind of way. The coffee tasted as though it was sitting around a while. Ok, well I got the chicken Caesar salad, it was piping hot, which was very strange, & very unappetizing (except for the sliced boiled egg, that was cold). I also had the cream of cheddar & broccoli soup, which was also strange, it tasted ok, but when my husband reached over to try it, he had his fork & took a fork full of the soup & nothing dropped from it... We both started laughing. So we (kinda) had a good time at that expense. Also, it had the biggest chunk of broccoli I've ever seen in it, & that tasted ok, but it was literally the consistency of opening up a can of Campbell's cream-of-whatever soup & eating it straight from the can. My husband had the broasted chicken with mashed potatoes & sage dressing, & when he tried each item I would ask how it was, & every time he gave me a look where he'd would wrinkle his face in disappointment. He ate less than half of his food, & I ate about a quarter of mine... One other positive was that we didn't have to bother having the left overs put in a carry-out container, so we didn't need to carry that into the house when we got home read more

This place is exactly the same as when I was a kid... in a bad way. The booths, decor, and menu are so outdated. It's a shame, because the food and prices are decent, not great, but decent. A nice overhaul would do this place wonders. Dinner is the weirdest. They let you choose from about a hundred different side items for each entree. Things like canned pears and cottage cheese. Just... strange. There are some gems on the menu, however, like the broasted chicken and chicken dumpling soup. Their chicken dumpling soup is still one of my favorites in the area and I crave it when I'm sick. Maybe it's the soup or maybe it's nostalgia. A friend and I tried the AYCE fish (pollock) on Friday. Service was very good. Fries were good and a generous portion. Coleslaw was excellent. The fish was flaky and of good texture, but reeked and tasted of ammonia - a sign of decomposition. We should have refused it and gotten something different. When I come home, there are two restaurants I could easily eat at forever and ever--even if I get fat. Mary's is one of them. I have never had a single bad meal when I've been here. That isn't to say all the meals are the best I've ever had, but none of them have been outright awful. The food ranges from meh to outstanding, and a lot of that depends on what you order. Mary's signature dish, which, in my opinion is the best thing they've got on the menu is the Chicken Dumpling Soup. Many a dream have been had about this food while I've been away at Madison studying. It's just--perfect. Now, when you get to dishes that are common, middle of the road (like hamburgers)--meh. You can get these anywhere, why would you want to get them here when they have things like the Chicken Dumpling Soup or their Wild Rice dish? They're also the only ones in the Fox Valley that make a good broasted chicken (I'm looking at you, Van Abel's--sit down and take notes). I love Mary's and having been there was the single best gift my ex gave to me. I loved it so much I kept it as a favorite even after the split. read more

I love Mary's. It is my favorite Appleton Diner. Usually I get the all you can eat soup and salad. And of course the soup I always go with is the WORLD famous dumpling soup... Wait? It's not World famous? ....well it should be! The dumplings are all different sizes, and plentiful. Most of them you need to cut up with your spoon. The broth is hot, and light and full of that "comfort food" flavor that we all love. The salad comes with cheese and tomatoes on top, or you can get it without, apparently, since they always ask me "are you ok with the cheese and tomatoes on top?" Absolutely! This is Wisco...you better not skip the cheese. I also have to rave about the cinnamon Apples for a minute. Hot. Bubbly. Cinnamony soft apples. It is like eating an apple pie without the crust. So it makes me feel like I am being healthy when I am probably, actually, pretty far from it. But speaking of pie... They have that too. Lots of different kinds, in a spinning case. Another of my favorite meals here is the broccoli chicken dish. It is loaded with fresh florets of Broccoli and large chunks of chicken, smothered in a cheese sauce with a cheese and bread crumb top. It is really delicious... And very filling. What I love about Mary's is that the food reminds me of having dinner with my Grandma when I was younger. Even down to the decor that has definitely not changed...like ...ever. It is a great place to bring the kids and eat a nice, no flair, but still delicious meal. read more

We will not be back. Everything is obviously from a can or frozen. If you want to advertise everything as homemade, it should be. I was obviously served boxed mashed potatoes, boxed stuffing and my kids were obviously served Bushs baked beans. While I have no problem eating those things, I do have a problem with eating those things when the sign out front says that everything is homemade. And I certainly do not like paying almost $35 for two adults and two kids to eat. Especially when the kids meals were only $1.99. This place is outdated and dingy and old. The service wasn't even that great. We were sitting waiting for a long time for pretty much everything. I do not understand the appeal of this place, I do not understand why they're always a million cars in the parking lot, and I cannot understand why before my review it has four stars on yelp. My brother and I were in town for the day and thought we'd stop and get a good breakfast in a family style restaurant, as we like to support local businesses rather than the big names. We got sat quickly and the gentleman who sat us was nice. But then we sat there for at least 15 minutes and never got waited on. Meanwhile, 5 other tables came in and got service right away. 3 of which were near us. There was a man who appeared to be an owner or manager that made eye contact with my brother as he was serving the table next to us and didn't bother to check to see if we'd been waited on. One of the servers also made eye contact and just walked on by as she took a ticket to the table next to us. Now living away from Appleton, I don't go as often any more. We usuually make it there for breakfast...which is really good. Today I went with my mom, son and daughter for lunch. My mom and daughter got omelets (they have a huge kids menu now including cyo omelets). My son got the chicken tenders. I wasnt sure what I was going to get, but they have a new (since I was there last) all u can eat soup and salad. I jumped at that because I love the beef vegetable soup but never get it because it's only offered on certain days and I'm never there those days. That soup is the best beef vegetable ever! Families with toddlers evidently not welcome. I visited Mary's restaurant on Richmond St. in Appleton on Saturday November 6. Our party of 3 adults and 3 toddlers arrived at 10:40 AM and were promptly seated. After 20 minutes we had to ask for a waitress. A few minutes later a waitress arrived and took our drink order (all waters) then walked away before we could order food. Another 10 minutes passed and she did not return. So 30+ minutes in our booth with no drinks or opportunity to order food. Meanwhile I table seated after us already had drinks served and order placed. If there is ever a restaurant you want to take someone to give them diarrhea, this is the place. The place is older then dirt, the carpet was filthy. There was dust everywhere and the food was disgusting. One good thing about the place was the server was very nice, attentive and seemed genuine. To start off, the menu items were old fashion and nothing seemed appealing. I ordered the fish platter...My big mistake, when I cut into the fish, water squeezed out of it as if it had been frozen and they warmed it in the microwave. The hamburger was tough as a hockey puck. The 1/4 pound steak was a hamburger patty with mushrooms and gravy on it. The chef salad looked like bag salad with a slice of ham and cheese ripped apart into the salad. The salad dressing was really bad mayonnaise with season salt. The tartar sauce was mayonnaise with sugar because it was sweet and nasty. Yeah, never again....I got sick after eating here. I have eaten here several times and the food is always good! Yesterday we got our order of Broasted Chicken and a Belgian Waffle with Strawberries as Carry Out for a Picnic with my 91 year old Mom. I was very impressed with the food and the care they took packing it for us. The Chicken was Hot, Fresh and Juicy without being greasy at all. It came with very good Cole Slaw and Mashed Potatoes. My Mom LOVES Strawberry Waffles. She used to just get them on special occasions, but now we get them for her whenever she wants. They packed each component in its own separate container so things wouldn't get soggy. We assembled things for her and she ate almost all of it, except for a small piece she gave to my sister's dog. read more

Here's the thing: I love broasted chicken, and usually just the dark meat. White meat has always been dry but I think the way they have mutated chicken for meat has made it much dryer. In any case, I love chicken that is broasted. Any other way is okay, KFC regular, JJ's, other great places I like.. but broasted is the king of chicken. Mary's has the best broasted chicken in Appleton. They have the best cole slaw in Appleton. They have the best baked beans I've had ANYWHERE. I wish I could give a review of the food here. I was so looking forward to a bountiful breakfast but it was not to be. Unfortunately I am TFTF which means "TOO FAT TO FIT". Like many restaurants the tables of the booths were attached to the wall so the space between table and seat is non negotiable. We tried the chairs at a table but they were unpadded and hard on the backside. We took our coffee to go which was very tasty. It seems to me that restaurants would want their larger clientele to be seated comfortably as we generally eat more therefore they make more money. read more
