My Wife had been here for lunch with one of her co-workers and said that I had to try it. She loved how cheap it was and said the food was "fantastic" and "cheap!". She must have been at a different place because.......this place felt like a soup kitchen. This was way past "hole in the wall". This was more like "sh*t on the floor". Was the food cheap? Yes. Mary's Lucky Dollar Mexican Restaurant blends into the street so well that I've driven past it dozens of times without knowing it existed. But, one day a couple of weeks ago I noticed this small whitewashed building sitting on the east side of 10th Ave., and had to check it out. I did some online research and learned the "go to" breakfast item is chorizo, 2 eggs, beans, and papas (potatoes). That is what I ordered and I was glad I made that choice. The chorizo had a perfect sweet-spot flavor of heat and mellow flavor. When blended with the papas, and tortilla, this dish had me smiling as I ate every bite of this breakfast. The available salsa to add comes in what looks like a ketchup bottle. Ketchup it is not! I'd call this salsa a "Goldilocks" salsa; not too hot, not to mellow, just the right heat. Previous reviews described old school plastic chairs & tables inside Mary's Café. The current furnishings are solid, regular tables and chairs, no plastic in sight. The interior of Mary's was surprisingly bright. While there are only small outside windows that seem opaque, the bright interior shows a very clean restaurant. I'm not sure if the walls have been freshly painted, but the walls looked bright. The waitress was friendly. She took the order after giving me a menu to check out. Food came to the table in about 10 minutes, and it was piping hot. The flavors, smells, and taste was perfecto! I ate every bite and waddled out a happy diner. Next time I go to Mary's Lucky Dollar Mexican Restaurant I will probably try the huevos rancheros. That will be a good taste sample of a classic Mexican breakfast. read more

OK, I have to admit, I'm the queen of the dives. This is one of Tucson's best kept secrets. Does mostly a huge take-out business. It was Sunday, 03-20-2016. Myself and a fellow officer stopped for lunch. Looked at the menu, and ordered the Carne asada burro with side of rice and beans. We were very hungry.. the food came and we dug in. The rice was good, the serving about a 1/4 of a cup. The beans were very tasty, less than a 1/4 cup. Very small quantities on plate. Plate was small and there was all kinds of room for food. The burro fit in the palm of my hand. The shoe leather was so dry and covered with black ash. We both ordered the same meal $14.00. Lots of salsa. We ate it all we were do hungry. I was very disappointed. Been there once before and I was not impressed. My partner has been here several times and likes it. Today she did not. This place was truly unforgettable... Unfortunately not in a good way. I was taken here by a co-worker who told me it was a "hole in a wall" place, which I love finding places like that, but this was a hole in a pile of dust! It was plain filthy... How the health dept. has not closed this place down is beyond me. There is a difference between ugly and dirty. I don't mind an ugly place, but dirty... Come on!!! Mary's lucky dollar is awesome , I had the chili relleno and they were some of the best I've had , ( I have a home in Taos NM ) where some of the best chili relleno plates are found . And I would consider theirs on par . The next time I went to Mary's I had the enchilada plate , again it was delicious and very filling , This is not a fancy place , it's where working class people go to eat great food for a good price . I had got married on the 29th of March and had a little less than 200 people or at least 200 people. we were supposed to get food at 5:00pm for all of our guest Marys lucky dollar didn't come until 7:00pm. My guest where upset hungry and some even left because they couldn't wait any longer to eat due to them being elderly and needing to take medicine. Mary's lucky dollar decided to give my Mother in Law their pots and pans and said to give it to Gabby at Balloon Land that they didn't have enough room and didn't want to wait to finish serving everyone till the food was completely gone. They had called my phone asking for their pots and pans I informed them my mother in law has them. she then stated can you call her and have her drop them off at the balloon land. I did do this and informed my mother in law they needed them that night for a job the following day as soon as they called me. I tried talking to them about them being two hrs late and they just pretended they didn't know what I said and said we just need our stuff you talk to gabby then hung up. The lady didn't call back nor gave me her name when I asked so I assumed it was taken care of. Two weeks later she calls back again stating we haven't given them their stuff back. So I responded and said Why was the stuff given to my mother in law in the first place it's not our responsibility to have your stuff that is your guys job to have all of your stuff and be responsible for it at all times. And another thing I would like to know who I speak to about the dinner service you guys where 2 hrs. late and I had guest who had left because of this. She immediately said YOUR A LIAR!!! WE WHERE A COUPLE OF MINS LATE AND THATS IT. You owe us money if anything because we made food for 275 people. I said excuse me???? We catered from Mary's for a 90-person wedding for two middle-class families, so we did not want high prices or expect silly gourmet food. Mary's provided food of high quality at a reasonable price. (We've had the Mexican buffet at the Ritz-Carlton) Mary's beans, rice, beef, tortillas, sauce and condiments were fresh and tasty. Mary's food was ample. Everyone got filled up. I've been coming to this little restaurant for years, but after the new owner(s) switch I was concerned that it was not going to be the same, but surprising they didn't change the menu or the prices, the interior did change for the better, no more plastic chairs and no wobbly tables, they painted the inside, and the restrooms are cleaner, but what really count is the food, the best tacos in town, I'm always bringing family and friends over for lunch and we are never disappointed, the price is so reasonable that I always pay for everyone since is not going to break my bank account, the best thing now is that they now take credit or debit cards, longer hours and they are open on Saturday that is something new, and Rosie, the waitress always greeting everyone with a smile.
