First time here, and it definitely won't be our last! We were pleasantly surprised to find parking right up front on a packed Friday night. Even better, we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and we were greeted right away by a friendly server who helped us get settled. My husband was starving, so we placed our order as soon as we sat down, and the food arrived within 15-20 minutes. The service throughout the evening was outstanding. Our water glasses were kept full, and our server checked on us regularly without being intrusive. We started with the smoked beets, which were absolutely incredible. I'll honestly be thinking about that dish for days! We also ordered the seafood platter with shrimp, crab claws, oysters, and three slices of sashimi. Everything on the platter was fresh and beautifully prepared. The oysters and sashimi were rich, creamy, buttery, and absolutely delicious. The steak frites was another standout. I was pleasantly surprised to see it featured picanha steak. It was packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and incredibly tender. Great location and plenty of parking! We ordered some bavette sirloins & skirt steaks to cook at home and cannot wait to try them. They looked absolutely mouth watering and were about $20/lb. We also ordered a Steak Frites to go and it was honestly perfection. The most perfectly medium-rare steak with so much flavor along with the perfectly crisp French fries. The baby bleu shallot sauce was just okay. The taste of fat was stronger than the other ingredients. But the fries were so beautifully cooked that you honestly don't need any sauce at all. Just enjoy their tallow fried goodness! Customer service was okay. Our order was handled quickly but our friend who placed the order felt uncomfortable in the space. Some of the young staff members were repeating her name and then would laugh and she felt a bit self-conscious because of it. There were also a lot of people in the food prep area laughing and hanging out, which didn't feel super clean. Wow. I couldn't decide whether a 4 or 5 star review is appropriate. The reviews on this place are spot on. Walking in, it's a bit confusing. There's no one to greet, nor a sign to state to wait to be seated. I saw a server and asked her and she lead me to a table. So, 4 stars for walking in. I was waiting on friend to show up. Our water glasses were filled and our server (Cory) asked if i wanted something to drink other than water (no). The place has a very industrial vibe and is very noisy (4 stars). Friend showed up and we looked at the somewhat limited menu. Cory took our orders. I ordered a (swordfish) fish sandwich with no bread and a side order of frittes (fries). Friend ordered the steak sandwich with condiments on the side. Looking around, one can see through the clear door as the butchers are breaking down the meats. There's a spot to shuck fresh oysters. There's a cooler with sides of beef and pork hanging and aging. along with cuts of meat, fish, and seafood. They had poke, different kinds of fish (amberjack which I've not seen outside of Florida)! There's a lot of wait staff, all in black with no name tags. The food arrived after about a ten minute wait. And the wait was worth it. The swordfish was done perfectly, juicy and tender. The swordfish was served with tartar sauce but it wasn't needed. The steak sandwich was just that, with the meat being steak worthy - tender and flavorful. The fries were AMAZING!!! Cooked in tallow, they were soft on the inside with a crusty outer shell. We ate every last one of them ((5 stars on the food). And 5 stars for Cory who was very busy but kept our water glasses filled and answered our questions. We talked to the owner for a bit. Might be one of my new favorite spots. Forbes Meat Market is a really unique place. It's both a butcher shop and a restaurant. There's a bar and they also have coolers where you can grab a drink like a soda, and they'll just add it to your bill if you're dining in. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Busy spot south of downtown. Locals know the history of the business and the building. I guess it is or was a butcher shoppe. Small and busy. We had a Rez which was honored. Three of us had sandwiches. They do not plate or serve sides, you have to order and pay. The sandwiches looked very lonely on the plate. Everything was good. Attentive service. A lovely patio lunch at Forbes. A bit chilly so they graciously lit the heater near our table which was lovely. Steak frites, steak sandwich and beet salad was the order and it was delicious. If we could give Forbes six stars + we would! I've been following this business since the beginning on social media and we have had numerous friends say it's absolutely amazing. Ben Forbes and his crew are crafting culinary magic, and in my opinion, is one of the best restaurants in Tucson, and that's saying something for a city of gastronomy. I especially appreciate the local meat partnership, supporting area farmers and meat that is more healthy and sustainable. My husband and I parked easily in the neighborhood, paying attention to signs, and walked through the Barrio Viejo area. We approached the patio which had numerous gas heaters, looked cozy and classy. We walked around to the entrance on the south side of building and we were greeted by an employee shucking oysters which was super fun! I've lived in Seattle, DC, and have spent a lot of time eating/drinking through Portland, and that's the first time I've experienced that when walking into a restaurant! We were then escorted through the restaurant and the vibe is a mix of meat market, classy restaurant, and wine bar, with a nod to Anthony Bourdain (which I loved!) The patio is romantic, cozy with classy touches including the beautiful (maybe mesquite?) wood tables in various lengths. Our table for two was perfect. Our server was excellent, and helped us decide on all of our choices. The oysters were rich and a great starter. Their house made tartar sauce was excellent. We added the sashimi, which included salmon, tuna and yellowtail, all outstanding. I was craving mussels, so I ordered them and they were perfectly steamed. The semi-spicy sausage was delicious and the bits of corn added a lovely crunch. I paired the frittes, which were crispy, with just the right amount of salt. My husband ordered a buttery, cooked to perfection, NY strip with bone marrow mash potatoes. Just incredible. The finale to our amazing meal was some of the best cheesecake I we've ever had, orange, honey cheesecake, which was light, full of flavor and addicting! Hubs and I shared everything we ordered -- the strawberry salad, fish sandwich, and steak sandwich -- and they were so kind to cut everything in half for us, which we really appreciated. Really cool place that has a casual yet dressy vibe with quality food and excellent service. I've been here twice and was drawn to the steak frites both times. This spot has been on our list to try for awhile and it didn't disappoint. We went for a special occasion and it felt like the perfect spot for it! Our server Nate was both knowledgeable and welcoming, with quick service and the correct orders coming out. We didn't feel rushed and really enjoyed the patio ambiance and taking out time to enjoy the food and the vibe. The food was delicious - we each got a steak, ribeye and tenderloin and the miso carrots and fries for sides. The carrots stole the show for the sides, beautifully caramelized and flavorful. The steaks were on point, the crust on the tenderloin was incredible and the quality of the meat was great. I brought an out of town guest again, knowing they would be amazed by the steak. I ordered Picanha he had the New York, and another friend had the steak frites which is the most exceptional steak bargain in Tucson. The service was stellar as always. You know you have found a good spot when there is a healthy mix of regulars and new diners.. that and their staff are super cool. Even if they are not your server they are friendly ( not to say our server wasn't- she totally was) and we had at least 2 other staff stop by and check how our food was and about our overall experience. We had the steak frites and Tonkatsu Pork Chop as well as the Butchers board. I very rarely order a pork chop but this one sounded interesting and I was not disappointed... a very unique take on a pork chop. If this place didn't have so many other other options I want to explore... I'd order it again. The Butchers Board was lovely with a good blend of meats and cheeses (the duck confit was so tender and tasty and tangerine olives.. yes tangerine olives... well I'm no olive connoisseur... but if I was one I'd say it's a must). Service stellar. The tables are large and clunky for the space, especially with meat freezers behind and adjacent to diners. The layout is strange. Went to brunch Sunday. Got the peach French toast, took one bite and sent it BACK. It was undercooked and nasty. Told our server who was gracious and she investigated what happened. Apparently burner wasn't on :/ huh?!?!? Got the chilaquiles which were good. I would get again. Everything was balanced and you got cheese quesadillas instead of chips. Chicken sandwich, which our server recommended, was a HARD PASS. All you could taste was sweet honey and a little chipotle spice. Barely any salt or flavoring. This needed way waaay more. It was a huge piece of chicken however the bun ratio was off so it was messy. Also, waaaayyy too much breading on the chicken I had to break pieces of it off. Both a market and a restaurant - they offer a great selection of high quality meats and seafood to bring home or stay and dine in to try their menu as well as weekly/seasonal specials. My favorite meal is their steak frites - the steak is cooked perfectly, and the fries are amazing and cooked in beef tallow. You can choose any sauce - we like the garlic aioli and chimichurri sauces which go really well with both. You can also get their fries as a side. We've also had the Forbes burger which has an amazing beef patty - not fancy but you can taste the high quality of the ground meat. Always be on the lookout for when they have their lobster roll special! It is packed with lobster including a huge claw and is buttery goodness in a brioche bun - I get it when they have it on the specials for the week because it is so good. There is seating at counter tables and at the bar. You can grab drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) from coolers in the market, and they'll bring you a glass. read more

Obsessed with the butcher shop!! I've had steaks from here so many times and finally got a chance to dine in. It took a few tries to get it in though, the first time we showed up we were turned away for indoor seating because we didn't have a reservation. The steaks we ordered were perfect and everything came out perfect! I love that there was a mix of beef, poultry, seafood on the menu and someone mentioned to me that the menu rotates. I tried the oysters that were available and they were excellent. I was a little disappointed about the tables inside - some of them are TINY. We ended up right by the door and it felt so WEIRD. Well cooked to medium, well seasoned and the mustard sauce wasn't too overpowering. The brioche bun was lightly toasted and kept everything together. I think they should try it with a sourdough bread. They have various drinks available and non-alcoholic options in their cold cases. Only negative was that it took awhile for someone to see that the couple across from us that sat down hadn't gotten any water or menus. Also, the waitress asked if I wanted a glass with ice for my canned soda; I said yes...I never got it, even after she came by to give us our bill... I absolutely love this place. The food is great. I loved the chicken thigh sando. I also like the buy meat here. We got a big brisket prior to Xmas and it was melt in your mouth amazing. The service is great too. Knowledgeable and cool. As far as how bigh this place is, it can def seat more that it appears to be able to. We eat at the bar and it's always good. Our brunch was absolutely amazing! I love it when you are eating food and every bite gets more and more delicious. The food was so good I even had to tell the chefs how much I enjoyed it. I had dinner here yesterday with two friends. One friend ordered a lobster roll special ($33), which she liked, but it was small. The other friend and I shared two dishes: ceviche ($28) and lamb merguez mussels ($24) with some extra toast ($2). (These items were from the appetizer menu; the entrees are more expensive.) The food and service were both excellent and the ambiance is nice, though it smells like the butcher shop that it is. I am so sorry, but it's a no for me. I really don't understand the hype for this place (although I will give the caveat that I am a pescatarian, and therefore am probably not their target audience). That being said, there options for pescatarians look really promising- lobster rolls, fish sandwiches, salmon plates for dinner, etc. Unfortunately, after three visits I feel like I have given this restaurant a fair chance and it's just not good for fish and seafood options, especially at an elevated price. The lobster roll I ordered was soggy, where the bun just fell apart. The meat was flavored well but I also found several shell pieces, so I don't think it's being processed properly. The salmon entree I ordered came on a salad with some beets and carrots, and a dressing. The salad part was good, but the salmon itself had absolutely no seasoning and was over cooked. The lunch Cajun sandwich was fine, but again lacking in seasoning which is disappointing especially for a Cajun style dish. For the prices, I can't justify the food being average to bad. I have also found that they are frequently sold out of one or more dish on their limited menu, although I understand they are likely sourcing ingredients regularly and changing things around based on fresh options. My dining partners usually rave about their meat entrees, so this review may not be helpful for the majority of people looking to dine here- but if you're looking for food for pescatarians or vegetarians, I would skip this spot. Service is friendly, I will give them that! It's not enough for me to return. read more

We happened to be close by at Barrio Brewing for a birthday and rather than eat dinner there, the hubby tells me that he'd rather take me over to Forbes. Say less, my dude! At around 8 on a Friday night we were able to get a duo but we did arrive too late for me to order the catch of the day. I know, why would order that at a butcher shop? Cuz this California girl crossed her fingers that she might get decent fish at an inland restaurant, that's why. We started off with an interesting take on steak tartare. We assumed that the egg was mixed into the tartare which was served on either the smallest and cutest round of pita or naan. Very yummy. Hubby got a nice cut of rare ribeye with mashed potatoes that had bone marrow mixed into it. They were the richest, melt in your mouth mashed potatoes ever. Highly recommend. I got the diver scallops, buttery and deliciously seasoned along with a side of the sautéed mushrooms. While we were waiting for our food, we perused the refrigerators of cheeses, pates, craft beers, and interesting non-alcholic beverages. With Dave taking care of us we thought we'd had the best dinner in Tucson so far. Dave was friendly, the Goldilocks of accommodating, not hovering and seemed genuine with his recs. On our way out I ordered a couple slabs of Chilean sea bass to cook for dinner the next night as well as a small bottle of cold sake to give as a gift. This was hubby's second time eating here, 1st dinner. We will definitely be returning and bringing friends.
