Sushi quality is really low for for the high prices , fish quality is literally equal to all you can eat restaurants. Prices are comparable to Katsuya and Sugarfish, actually my bill at Katsuya it's even cheaper. Def wouldn't recommend. It's a mix of traditional food and the trendy American style rolls. The decor is simple, a bit eclectic with photos of friends and family, traditional heirlooms, to typical findings at a sushi restaurant. While the food is good, but I've been spoiled living in the big city of LA with it's multitude of sushi places. A few bucks overpriced. The WORST dining experience I have had in my life! I don't usually write negative reviews for places, but I am so appalled at the experience we had tonight I can't stay quiet! I realize that I may have made some mistakes this evening, but my overall experience tonight has felt almost unreal... Mistake number one: Going to sushi on a Tuesday night. I really think that any night you go they should have fresh fish and good service, but that was NOT the case tonight. Mistake number two: not turning around and leaving the minute I smelled the incredibly fishy odor when we first walked in. It was such a strong smell, but since I've been told by more than one person that Masa Sushi was good, I decided that I'd ignore it. Things got even worse when we sat toward the back and they decided to use some super strong chemicals to clean the back room and they overpowered us in our chairs. We thought about moving toward the front of the restaurant, but wanted the privacy of being in the back... Leading to mistake number three: We got to the restaurant around 8:30 and there was a decent crowd. The waitress was so busy that when we tried to order some appetizers, she told us that she had to help others, but once we finally ordered she came up to tell us that they were taking last calls on orders, and we hadn't even gotten our food yet! My fiancee and I both love Sushi, and being the son of a chef I know what fresh food looks and tastes like, and what they brought us was not fresh at all. Even the dinner salad was soggy and wilting. I tried to like the rolls and fish we ordered, but this was not good food at all. As we were trying to eat our really bad food, the waitresses were hurrying around and cleaning up, making us feel as if we had to hurry to get out of there. They forgot to make our gyoza, so we asked about it and the waitress made a fit about forgetting to get it ordered. As she brought the appetizer, after all the other food (should I even call it that... I'm not sure) was on the table, she took our drink away while it still had some sake in it. I was so disappointed that I had suggested this place to come on my date night with my fiancee. Finally to my mistake number four: Even though I've heard some rumors about Masa and his attitude, I thought I would politely let him know that our food and dining experience were not so good this evening. That's when things got really bad! Masa tried to explain to me that all the fish was prepared right and since it was cooked it was just as it was supposed to be. I wish I had taken a picture of this food... So BAD! I told him that instead of writing a bad review somewhere I just wanted to let him know and I walked back to my table. He proceeded to come over and try to convince me that there was nothing wrong with the food and that I was the one at fault since we had eaten more than one piece of each roll before saying anything about it. He kept trying to explain that his twenty-nine years of being in the business allowed him to know that the food was all just fine. It's pretty easy to know when something doesn't taste good! No explaining can fix that... Finally I had to tell him that I didn't want to talk with him about anything any more... Niether my fiancee or I have EVER had such a bad experience in a restaurant! And now, she's pretty unhappy that I am taking the time to write this down. It's a bummer, because we both really wanted to like this place, but I am pretty confident that I will NOT be going back to Masa Sushi again. Too Bad! read more

My cousins and I were thrilled to see a sushi place close to our hotel so we blazed over one evening. Everyone seemed to be *so* excited about their food, but I stuck with the miso soup and edamame...two things that are really hard to mess up. First of all, I do not enjoy eating at a sushi joint that reeks of fish. And I do not want to *eat* sushi that reeks of fish, which mine did. That means it's not fresh, plus, it's just unappetizing. I must say they have an extremely adventurous menu - tons of creative-sounding rolls. I ordered the gyoza, and to my amazement it arrived deep fried - the first time I've ever seen that. The staff seemed extremely friendly (even though they booted us out at 9 p.m.) but for discerning sushi-eaters I can't say I would recommend this place. If you're sticking to vegetarian dishes, you'll be okay, but be forewarned on all the fish. read more

I am only writing this review because my doctor insisted I do so, as she is reporting the restaurant to the state. Let me first start off by saying this was for lunch, and as any of you really big sushi people know lunch is the worst time to get sushi as they save the newest catch for the evening. That being said, I had the Spicy Tuna and California rolls. After eating about half the Tuna rolls I tasted something that did not set well with me so I did not eat any more. Before you think that I am just one of those snobs please know that I eat everything including most the food off my co-workers and friends plates as well. For me to stop eating that is not a good sign, but I have eaten enough seafood to know when something is not right. That evening about 1 am I woke up with cramps and a massive headache. I felt ill and should have thrown up, but just drank some water and went back to sleep (big mistake). The next day I could barely move off the bed with these cramps. Now I know that food poisoning usually last 24-48 hours tops so I figured no big deal I'll just rest a day and that will be that. I am not the type to complain or write these types of reviews, I have better things to do with my time. However, after 3 days of hardly any sleep and constant pain I went to the doctor and because it had already been so long after I had eaten the Sushi they went straight for bacterial infection from bad fish and had me tested via blood and other means...The results came a week later and turns out I had a fish born a foreign bacteria in my body from either the raw fish or the treatment of the fish by the employees at the restaurant. My doctor said that there was no way this type of bacteria should have been there unless there was unsanitary conditions or the fish was allowed to get warmer than room temperature. Either way, she has reported it to the state and I am doing the same on here. My co-worker who ordered a different meal, but was served by the same employee also got very ill, but she did not eat the fish and was fortunate enough to throw up the first evening and was only ill for 24 hours. I was not so lucky. It took me over 8 days to get back to normal even with the prescribed medications. Please think twice before you go here especially for lunch and trust me when I say I am not just a hypochondriac. This is the first time I have actually been sick from food like this and that is why I am tasking the time to get this review written. A generally rule of thumb is that if the Sushi is cheap then most likely it is old. read more

it was pretty late for me to go, Got there at 9:40 twenty minutes to close I was the only costumer In there. Dude behind the bar looked bummed I was there, which I get but if you don't wanna serve me tell me right there. I asked twice if they're still open and if sushi can still be served. He was like "yeah just not at the bar" which is understandable, so I sat down and got my order taken. when the sushi chef read it he laughed out loud and made a joke in his language to one of the waitresses and right there I knew I was being made a joke. Started to eat my tuna rolls and they tasted gross, Come to find out there's a good amount of wasabi laying under my tuna. And I'm no sushi expert but that's not how tuna rolls are made that's bullshit. I asked the waiter if that's regular and when he asked the chef he looked shock that I had discovered his trick. And just said "yes there's wasabi there" like what. Idk I think he did it on purpose cause he didn't wanna serve me and I got my "baked" eel roll in 5 minutes and of course it was cold. But I ate my food and left a $5 tip because I'm not a shitty person but I didn't feel to good being there. Definitely not going back. Update* about an hour after posting this review and eating my UNDERCOOKED "BAKED" Eel roll. I am now on the toilet. Can I say diarrhea on Yelp? Why not. Thanks masa! read more

I don't really know where to start. First of all I started eating sushi in the late 70s when there was only one place in all of Ventura county that served sushi and California rolls hadn't been invented yet. Bearing that in mind over the years I have learned to enjoy top notch authentic sushi and my favorite place was Hanami in Hueneme which unfortunately closed down. Since then I have been searching in vain for a good sushi bar. Finally after years of searching I decided to give Masa a try, I hadn't eaten there in ten years but I knew he was good. When I sat down I discovered that Masa had retired and sold the place so I wasn't sure what to expect and I didn't expect much because most sushi bars are now terrible. Well, to my surprise the sushi tasted just like sushi ! I could actually taste the sushi su in the rice ! Most bars have, for some inscrutable reason, stopped using su or using so little that it is virtually undetectable, but not here, this was genuine sushi rice ! Next the fish was fresh, very fresh and I could taste the sweetness of the fish that was supposed to taste sweet. I ordered aji, one of my favorites, the entire fish was traditionally prepared with some of it used for sushi, some for sashimi and the bones deep fried to a browned, crisp delicacy, wonderful ! The yellowtail was fresh and melted in my mouth as it should. Each presentation was a delight to the eye. In short, Masa sushi was a wonderful surprise, finally a sushi bar that actually serves sushi ! Who could ask for more than that. Domo arigato, Masa Sushi, mata neh ? My husband and I decided to check this place out after I got a coupon in the mail. I've seen it a million times, but have never stepped in before. After reading some reviews we decided to try it out. The place is small, but it's definitely a good "hole in the wall. We sat at the sushi bar and got our drink orders taken care of immediately. We decided to order the Firecracker and Crunch roll, it did take some time for the rolls to come out, but when they did they were amazing. Tons of crunch and flavor, especially on the Firecracker roll. Overall, we were very pleased. All of the waitresses were super nice and attentive. We will definitely be coming back! read more
