What a Gem!!! This is truly a hole in wall family owned restaurant. Owner is Japanese and they only open 3 days a week. Came in with the family and everything was delicious and fish was so so fresh. You know the food is good when their special menu has many times sold out. Will have to wait for next Thursday to see what their catch of the day is and order what we missed out on. This is a small husband and wife run Resturant. It's one of the best hidden gems in all of Southern California. In Ventura /oxnard! The sushi chef only buys enough fish for the 3-4 days it is open and that's it. They are also only open during dinner so there's such a limited number of sittings. The fish quality is so good. And you will come away knowing you've had one of the best sushi meals in your lifetime. Service was impeccable and the ambiance brings you back to a small town Japanese feel. When I want to eat sushi, I always go to sushi restaurants that the Japanese own, and I have been to Koba Sushi many times. All the people working here are Japanese, including the sushi chef Toshi. When Americans ask me where to recommend sushi restaurants in Ventura, this is one I recommend. Their sushi is good. Also, they have some Japanese sake. The only thing that bothers me is that the restaurant is small and has few seats, so it fills up quickly. They and a few don't take reservations, so you must go before opening. There is no parking lot, but you can park on the street. read more

This place was great! I usually never leave Yelp reviews, but there isn't as much info available online for Koba as a lot of other places. They open at 5pm and fill up quickly. I arrived at 4:45 and there were already 7 people lined up in front of me. My friend and I got the last two seats at the sushi bar (two people ahead of us chose to sit at one of the 4 tables inside). I have tried to go on other days when I didn't show up right at 5 and was told that it would be about an hour wait. We both opted for the omakase. I haven't had a ton of different types of sushi (usually just a spicy tuna roll fan) so I didn't necessarily know what I would be getting myself into. After ordering, we were asked if everything was ok/any allergies. We were first given a bowl of miso soup. It was incredible. Miso soup seems like a relatively simple dish, but this one somehow tasted better than any other ones that I've had. Almost coincident with soup was an appetizer described as "potato." It tasted like radish, with some greens, caviar, and sauce. It was very good. Next our plate of sushi arrived. I thought the omakase would be served course by course, but it came out as all 10 pieces on a large plate. Our waitress told us the ten pieces, starting from the top left going clockwise were: 1. Bluefin tuna (marinated with soy sauce, don't need to put any extra on) 2. Halibut 3. Salmon 4. Skipjack 5. Amberjack 6. Scallop 7. Sea urchin 8. Toro (fatty tuna) 9. Squid 10. Pike The bowl in the top right corner was "baby sardines." I enjoyed almost everything. I wasn't a fan of the sea urchin, due to a combination of a unique texture with a strong seawater flavor. The squid was pretty chewy, but had a good taste. The baby sardines didn't taste like much, just slightly salty? Everything else was great! The halibut had some wasabi and maybe a mint leaf. Very interesting flavors. The skipjack had a bit of a smoked flavor. The bluefin, toro, and salmon all had great flavor and texture. Everything tasted very fresh. While working through the omakase, we saw a different plate that someone had ordered which included the eel roll. It looked great, so after we finished when our waitress asked if we would like anything else, we asked for an order of the eel which was two pieces. It was amazing! The sauce on it was wonderful and it was a great piece to end the meal on. read more

FIVE STAR WORTHY for sure! Why did it take us so long to find you Koba? I'm not kidding! This little hidden gem here in Ventura is AhhhMazing! A tiny place, with only like 4 dining tables and maybe 6-8 seats at the sushi bar...and street parking only. The service is amazing! The gals are absolute dolls! They offer a simple menu, some popular appetizers and very limited roll options but here? it's all about the fish! Honestly? We've tried many local sushi bars but NONE come close to their fish! Fresh and flavorful beyond comparison! Just to give you an example, we tried the yellowtail, albacore, halibut, Spanish mackerel, Japanese scallops and uni (sea urchin) EVERYTHING was awesome delicious! Pretty disappointed in my experience at this restaurant... walked in the other day shortly after 5pm and was immediately met with a very unpleasant odor. Not necessarily like "rotting fish" scent, more like "dilapidated building" perhaps. So not off to a good start. One of the hosts then greeted me and showed to an open seat at the bar. Very small menu, small restaurant (I'm guessing 18 person capacity), but I ordered the tuna and yellowtail rolls, as well as albacore in the traditional sushi style. Quality was good but not great... I had such high hopes for this place because of the reviews and word-of-mouth. Overall I ended up paying almost $40 for ten pieces of fish and a miso soup. And the soup was the best part... What a fantastic traditional and authentic style Japanese sushi bar. I credit Yelp for steering me their way after leaving the Ventura County Fair. My daughter and I were both hungry for a real meal after snacking all day. I quickly poked through some of the reviews and photos and decided it looked like a solid choice and boy was it! You will notice immediate that it is very small, and with limited staff. The night we were there on a Friday, the owner sushi chef and two wait-kitchen staff. They did an amazing job of handling what amounted to a full house. Yes we waited longer than ideal and yes they do close very early, 8pm but the star of the show, they food shown through. Most of their daily catch specials were long gone by 7 when we sat down but I did manage to score the last Uni as it was wiped from the board as soon as I ordered. My daughter goes for the easy stuff, usually Miso soup, Tuna sushi( hold the wasabi) and a teriyaki chicken appetizer. We subbed in gyoza for the chicken as they don't offer it here. All delicious. I got a sampling ( the omikase-chef's selection) was already sold out so I just asked for the best of what they had. From the wild caught Salmon to the Blue Fin, it was all amazing. They feature high quality ingredients at reasonable prices. The aforementioned wait staff was also handling the back and the front of the house and the kitchen. They were working so hard and were smiling the whole time. Don't come here if you are looking for a raucous sushi bar experience, doing sake bombs and eating copious amounts of rolls loaded with mayo and deep fried. This is a very nice place to experience some great fish, prepared and served with excellence in the traditional Japanese way. I can't wait to go back! read more

To be honest, I don't remember the fine details of my experience here... In the best way possible. My newly engaged friends took me here while I was staying at their place, and we celebrated they're impending nuptials with what felt like bottomless sushi and sake. We'd taken a Lyft though the restaurant was a few minutes away so we could drink and not worry about driving back. I can't comment on the parking situation, but we were seated immediately so I'm guessing there's plenty. We ordered a ton of different rolls and nigiri.
