I had a friend visiting from out of town, and I wanted to find a nice elevated dining place in Clear Lake. Luckily, I found Masa! To summarize my review before it begins, Masa is now my destination if I am craving sushi and Japanese food. The atmosphere was elegant, which makes it stand out from other surrounding sushi restaurants. We started off with cold sake and Ahi Poké Nachos, which were crispy and delicious. My friend and I split Sushi Combo C, which features 20 pieces of assorted sushi with California and Spicy Tuna rolls. The sushi was very fresh and skillfully made. The Tamago was freshly made with the traditional chopstick method. This was the best sushi I have had since I dined at Nobu in Las Vegas. Our companions had the chicken katsu Bento Boxes because they wanted an assortment of things to try. The tempura battered shrimp and vegetables were lightly crunchy and delicate. After dinner, the four of us had a round of Ninja Drop martinis, which were tangy and sweet. The owner, Michael Zhou (pronounced "zjoe"), came over to say hi. He encouraged us to try one of his favorite items, the Ahi Tuna Tartare, which was spectacular. To finish, we had a couple of bottles of hot sake alongside some yummy mochi ice cream. Our experience was amazing. Our server, Jordan, took great care of us, and we all had a great time. I was looking for an elevated experience, and I got exactly what I was looking for and more. We went in for Friday dinner and the restaurant was busy but quiet. There was low light throughout and made for a serene atmosphere. The menu options are extensive and varied that makes it hard to narrow down the options. Unfortunately, the dim lighting and the font/color of the menu made it somewhat difficult to read the ingredients on each menu selection. We ordered 4 rolls to share between 2 people. The rolls were large but unfortunately were primarily rice instead of actual sushi meat selection. Flavor was great and unique to each roll. Unfortunately, the disproportionate rice to meat ratio was too obvious. When the rolls are brought out, there is no wasabi paste or ginger brought out but our server immediately asked if we would like some. Lastly, service. Service was great. We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our kids. The food was mixed, some tasted all right, some were dry. The next morning all of us were sick and I got really bad food poisoning that required antibiotics. In this hot weather, it is easy for food to go bad without even noticing or people that prepare them do not keep the sanitary conditions like wash their hands constantly. I loved this place the first time and I was excited to go back and bring my family. It will be a long time before I try sushi again, sadly. Service was good, though. read more

I always thought it was just okay, and my opinion stays the same. the decor has been updated inside and out, and the place looks nice, but the food is so-so. Went for lunch with coworkers recently. they had the bento box, one beef and one with chicken. both looked good. i had the sushi plate. it came out quickly. the first thing to give me pause, was that the sashimi was nearly room temperature. raw fish at room temp is asking for trouble, or some gastrointestinal distress at least. the second pause was the taste. the fish was not the freshest. anyhow, sushi in Houston has always been hit or miss, usually miss, and this place is no exception. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Hibachi with fried rice. It came with soup & salad. I was eating the teriyaki chicken & the fried rice, & was almost done with it. When I scooped one of my final bites right as I was about to put it in my mouth I realized there was a BUG on my fork!!!! A DEAD BUG!!!! I'm not sure what kind of bug it is, looks like some type of beetle or something. But I'm DISGUSTED!! I can't believe I ate nearly the whole plate with a bug in my rice!!!! Man this place is overpriced for the quality. Walking right in, the layout is a bit confusing. There's a lot of space wasted, and a lot of areas where a bunch of seats are crammed together. I was pulling off some of the rice as it was low quality on my roll, and the server comes by to say that 'if I didn't want rice I could have just asked for sushi with less rice.' I had a Rainbow Roll which was delicious and sized well for the price. If you're in the mood for casual sushi, Masa won't disappoint. My biggest ding comes from the ambience. When we walked in there was just a little bit of a smell that was "off" for me. It made me a little nervous since this is a raw fish restaurant. In general everything just felt really sticky, but maybe that's just this persistent Houston humidity?? Lastly, the booth seat was badly torn up. The roll did not stay together. Broke all apart in soy sauce. It was served with no ginger or wasabi. Had to ask for it. The edamame was cold. Should be served hot. The seaweed salad was the tiniest portion. Went on a Saturday at 400 pm. There was only one other couple there with 2 sushi makers. 2 waiters. There was no reason for food NOT to be fabulous and the service wonderful. Reading other reviews stating this place under new management. They had a huge banner outside stating they were hiring. I usually don't fuss about stuff, but Masa Sushi Clear Lake just totally pissed me TF off. I've been going there since I was a teen and found out I had racked up 3,118 points. I go in today to use them and they tell me they got a new pos and it only shows 24 points. CONVENIENT. The manager checks the old system and says it only shows 328. LIES.
