Sips: chai (comped) self service -not bold, nuanced cardamon& milk with black tea. Bites: Bengali style thali (14): chutney, Dahl, potato curry. Fried fish, dessert. Basmatic rice. -Sweet chutney-to mix with rice & entree_ -Gulab jamun-sweet traditional Indian dessert: fried dough soaked in sweet syrups. My family and I love the food at Masala Ferry! You get some of the best desi, specially South Indian/Bengali food at such reasonable and affordable prices. I do want to preface that while the service is quite slow here and it's mostly self serve, the owner seems to really care and puts all his efforts in the quality of the meal so this as well as ambiance can be totally waived in place of stellar food. My parents love the Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani and I absolutely love the paneer tikka masala here. You can tell they've let everything marinate for a while and the spices and flavor really come out of everything so well. On top of that, we never end up spending more than $60 here so it's such deal of a restaurant in the East Bay Tri Valley area. I'm looking forward to coming back many more times in the future with more friends and family who love a good quality, inexpensive desi meal. read more

Masala Ferry is a humble restaurant offering a short but flavorful menu of regional Indian cuisine from Bengal in the northeast and Andhra Pradesh in the south. The thalis were the perfect menu item to order to sample a bunch of different dishes in one complete meal. The Andhra Style Thali came in a veg and non-veg version--the veg thali featured butter paneer (paneer cubes in a creamy tomato curry), dal, raita, rice, a buttered roti flatbread, pickle, and gulab jamun; while the non-veg thali came with a choice of meat curries (I had the bone-in Andhra goat and the dark meat Gongura chicken), along with the same sides and accompaniments. The Bengali Style Thali also came in a veg and non-veg version, with the veg featuring Alu Posto (potato cubes in a creamy spiced poppy seed paste), Chanar Dalna (paneer balls and diced potatoes in a mild curry), Sona Moong Daal, rice, pickle, and gulab jamun. Finally, the non-veg Bengali thali came with a choice of two meat curries (I had the bone-in Kohsa Style Mutton and the Rui Kalia, a curry with boney fish), along with the other sides. We have dined at Masala Ferry twice in the past month and both times were pretty good experiences. Unfortunately, a lot of the menu items we wanted were not available each time. So, it may be best to dine here earlier in the day, especially if you want certain curries or fish dishes. Regardless, I really enjoyed the luchi, chicken tikka kebab, and biriyani. My parents enjoyed the eggplant curry and an okra curry. Overall, customer service was slow and inconsistent and it seemed like the restaurant was understaffed. It is a pretty new business, so perhaps they need to work out some logistics or hire more staff. However, the restaurant itself was clean and comfortable, but nothing too special in terms of decor. We had three meals at Masala Ferry this past weekend. If you are missing authentic Bengali food from Kolkata or you want to try it you have to come here. The Karaishutir kachuri and luchi for breakfast on Mohaloya was so delicious. Mohaloya buffet included shukto, sonamuger daal, aloo posto, jhuri aloo bhaja, echor chingri, doi rui, chicken curry and mutton kosha. Each and every item was mouth-wateringly delicious and of authentic taste. The fish fry and chicken lollipop that we ordered the day before, were also excellent! Masala Ferry is Bengali/Andhra restaurant that replaced Hyderabadi Biryani house. This has recently opened and they owners are still figuring stuff out, so they take orders, serve food and even come and talk to you to make sure you can have the best experience there. We had the Bengali veg and chicken thali. It was very delicious and hugely satisfying. The base thali comes with daal, rice, chapati, chutney, papad, potato fry and one vegetable curry (aloo posto) or vegetable fry (okra fry). The non veg thali has choice of fish curry, chicken kosha or mutton kosha. The chicken was really good and will take you back to the Bengali cuisine of Kolkatta. I had previously taken out their Kolkata biryani (mutton and chicken) and a few appetizers a few times, but this last weekend decided to try their buffet, which they have been running for the last couple of months. Plenty of options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, and I was delighted that they had rui kalia - a staple Bengali rui/rohu fish dish, on the menu, alongside Basanti polau and mutton/goat kosha. The buffet had plenty of tasty appetizers as well, like babycorn manchurian, chicken and paneer tikkas, along with fish pakoras. There was a mixed veg dish, a customary paneer gravy dish, a daal, 3 different rices (including plain white/pulav/goat biryani) and plenty of accompaniments. Garlic/plain/butter naans are included within the buffet and brought to you table-side, as ordered. I don't know how, but somehow they have been able to recreate the flavor of the Kolkata Mutton Biryani exactly! It was light, airy, with a good quantity of meat/egg/ the compulsory and beautifully seasoned alu, all plentifully portioned amidst the flavored rice. The service was pretty quick as well, and Ambarish was very helpful in suggesting good side dishes. The food scene is Kolkata is well known, and I've been wishing for someone to bring well known Bengali delicacies to life and glad that Masala Ferry is finally addressing that gap! I hope that they can keep up the quality. Also, a brief shout out for their fish fry - it was slightly over done, but I loved how they have been able to get the crispiness, taste and flavor of the Calcutta fish fry. Epic! The food was very good even though we were really unfamiliar with the menu. Fortunately, the restaurant was not busy and they could explain it to us and help pick out dishes we would like. The food is regional which was exciting, and I would name our dishes, but I can't remember their names except for the goat biryani. Went for lunch and ordered part Bengali and part Andhra. Authentic Bengali food which is hard to come by in the bay area. Loved the ghugni and the dalna and the bread was fresh. They still new and working through their menu. Our request would be to add more veg options to both menus (Paneer does not count as a vegetable!) - a real pappu, pulusu, koora etc would be great on the Andhra side of things.
