We had a great time, I nearly took a star off for service - to send a message to the owners to add a server. Six of us dropped in for lunch on Wednesday. Raj was the only server, and although he is excellent, it was a challenge for him to support the 20+ customers across 6 - 7 tables. This location has a new restaurant every few years. The lack of foot traffic and lack of nearby offices hurts. However, there is lots of free parking so, hopefully, they have a better dinner turnout. Cleanliness: although the dining area was fine, the rest rooms and passages need work. Okay, now the best part! The food was delicious! We ordered beer, multiple appetizers, entrees, different rotis and desserts. They ranged from good to excellent! The favorite was the badami chicken. The gravy for the tawa chicken tasted amazing, but there was hardly any chicken there. Got a mumbled reply when we pointed that out. The food came out slow and staggered, even with the robot runner. I love that Swaraj opened a branch in the east bay. They offer very good Indian food and has great service at very reasonable prices. We came here to try it out and we were very impressed with the quality of the food and the variety of dishes. My family loved mutton - this place has only mutton, no lamb. Their roti and naan is also a little different from what I'm used to. It's thinner and crunchier, which my kids love. Overall, double thumbs up. "The robot is coming." I have to giggle because it was quite entertaining to see a robot bringing out our food to our table. It made it so memorable. The restaurant has two sides: the dining area and a full-bar area. It's very clean and nicely decorated. The tables are spaced well, probably to give room for the robots. The menu is authentic Indian from a region that I am not familiar with. They had mutton, goat and fish options. I didn't see the usual Indian fare so I was in unfamiliar territory and at a loss as to what to order. Thank goodness for Mohan. He was our server who is not only very polite but professional and charming. He helped up with his recommendations and warned us about spice level. Even if a dish had zero peppers, he said "It's Indian mild." Hahaha! So funny. I very much appreciated that warning. We ordered: GOBI MANCHURIAN - (1 pepper) Good appetizer especially if you want a heartier vegetable dish. Nice flavor. CHICKEN RAJHANS - (0 peppers) Very similar to Butter Chicken. Creamy tomato gravy, a little sweetness. For having zero peppers, it had a kick. Mohan said next time I can ask for it even milder. SUKHA CHICKEN - (1 pepper) Very flavorful. My husband preferred this chicken dish over the Rajhans. This was spicier for me. PALAK PANEER - (1 pepper) Big chunks of cheese and the spinach sauce was very creamy. This was delicious with their naan. They offered us 2 kinds of naan: the traditional one and another one that was rice-based. That was interesting. It was chewier. I liked it! As you can see, I didn't order anything over 1 pepper. If you like spicy, try them out because they went up to 4 peppers! I think my mouth with explode at that spice level! It was also nice that the owner or manager walked around and spoke to the customers. They gave us a complimentary dessert which was a sesame ball with peanut and some kind of spice that they give to friends during an Indian celebration (which was the night we ate here.) I visited Swaraj on a Friday evening. It was not too busy, and there was plenty of parking available, which was a nice start. The restaurant also has a good ambience with a very spacious seating arrangement that makes for a comfortable dining environment. Unfortunately, once the order was placed, the never ending wait began. It turned out they were short on kitchen staff and had many online orders backed up, which completely jammed the order pipeline. It took more than 1.5 hours for our food to come out. The service was unimaginably slow. When the food finally arrived, it was just mid. The sloth like pace of the restaurant completely overshadowed an already average meal. Despite the easy parking and nice atmosphere, the mediocre food and incredibly slow service make it difficult for me to recommend Swaraj or come here again. read more

Went on a weekday for lunch right during prime time but unfortunately it was very quiet and we were the only table the entire time. It was very bright and clean inside and spacious. We noticed that there was a fresh rose on every table which was a very nice touch. We were not familiar at all with this type of indian food and our server tried to explain to us and be helpful. We ended up ordering the kadak chai, Pani Puri, Malvani Mutton, and Chicken Rajhans with Bajra Bhakri and a side of rice. Portions were a bit smaller than we'd like considering the prices. Not a lot of meat in the curries. The lamb was supposed to be 2 chilis spicy and was pretty spicy, even for me who can eat spicy (for reference, I can eat thai and viet spicy). Had high hopes for it but it just kinda lacked depth and flavor and even felt like a thin curry. It was still good, but i've definitely had much better curry. The chicken curry was better, but again, have had better. We didn't really want the bread side but the waiter was really pushing it so we got it, even though we don't really eat carbs like that. The rice was the extent of the carbs we wanted. Pani puri and the chai was good. Might try a different location but prob will not be returning to this one. read more

I had visit Swaraj in Sunnyvale several times, but this is my 1st time in San Ramon location. This place is bigger than their Sunnyvale location I like their decorations of the restaurant because you can learn something from this region of India, such as map. The foods are delicious. We ordered Macchi Curry & Sukha chicken. I like Macchi curry more than Sukha chicken because I think the chicken is a bit (not much) salty. The Macchi curry is a bit more creamy. Swaraj has a dark, regally-decorated interior and a menu of Maharastrian food from the western state of India. The menu was printed on a cloth paper and decorated to look like a royal scroll, and while most of the items seemed unfamiliar, the super friendly staff was quick to walk through it with their recommendations! We started with the Kothimbir Vadi, a steamed and grilled cake made of gram flour and chopped cilantro. The slices were rather dry and flavorless on their own, but were served with an herbaceous green chutney, a spicy red chutney, and a sweet tamarind chutney. To drink, I had the Sol Kadhi, a bright pink drink made of coconut milk and kokum juice. The drink had an intense sour, salty flavor and helped cool down the spices of the food. For our mains, the Sukha Mutton was made of chunks of bone-in, slightly chewy mutton cooked with onions, tomatoes, and spices; and the Malvani Chicken was bone-in chicken cooked in a spicy dark gravy made with coconuts, chilies, and spices. But my favorite dish was the Veg Peshwai, made of mixed vegetables (including cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers, and paneer) in an addictively creamy onion tomato gravy. All of the entrees went perfectly with their freshly-made flatbreads, including rice bhakri (which had a soft yet chewy texture), millet bhakri (hard and dry), and my favorite, the Maharashtrian chapathi, a two-layered whole wheat flatbread with a soft, chewy texture and nutty aroma! I am a regular patron here for their Vadapav (which in itself is mind blowing) but this review is specifically for their Srikhand. It's absolutely delicious- perfect to a T. For those that are not familiar with this dessert; it's essentially strained yogurt sweetened with sugar with some cardamom, saffron and nuts. Swaraj's version is exactly how it should be - creamy, slightly tangy with the saffron adding a beautiful color and aroma. You won't be disappointed! read more

AMAZING authentic Maharashtrian food! Finally found a place that does real regional Indian cuisine instead of the usual generic butter chicken stuff! First off, our server Raj was fantastic. Super friendly, attentive, and really helped make our dining experience special. He gave great recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Food highlights: SHRIMP KOLIWADA - This appetizer was perfection! Crispy, spicy, addictive. The coating was so light and crunchy, and the spices were on point. SAOJI MUTTON with BHAKRI - This is the real deal, people. Super spicy but SO good. The mutton was fall-apart tender and the gravy was flavorful and spicy. So here's my problem no sign outside states that they open at 5 PM when I got there at 4:29. The only thing that they have that indicates that they are not open is a LED sign that you can't even see cause it's so high up that it's almost touching the ceiling. I was just standing around for almost 5 minutes inside of a dark restaurant and I wanted to try the soups they have but I'm probably not gonna be returning because that's ridiculous. This place was amazing. If you're tired of having standard Indian food and want to try something with completely unique distinctive flavors you have never had before, this is the spot. It is Maharashtrian food and the chef (who we met) is incredible. We never had been offered this unique cuisine before and can't believe how delicious it is. Swaraj is a relatively new Indian restaurant opening up in San Ramon, which introduces Maharashtra cuisine, from the western part of India. Its one of the most affluent regions of India and includes the city, Mumbai. The restaurant decor is gorgeous - painted artwork on hanging drapes, nice table settings, servers dresses in uniforms, and yes even a robot roaming around. The food is good and definitely on the spicier side. Indian food is definitely more complex than North and South. Malvani chicken was moist and still plenty spicy despite having coconut as one of the components. Must be all those spices. It had a 2-chili rating on the menu so glad I didn't order a dish with 3 or 4-chilis, LOL. Instead of the usual butter or garlic naan, they offered the excellent Chapati, which is whole wheat flatbread, also known as Roti. For dessert, I got the Shrikhand, a very thick and sticky sweet yogurt with saffron, pistachio, and cardamom. I like this much more than the usual milky tapioca desserts. Definitely recommend giving Swaraj a try, especially if you enjoy spicy foods and want to experience something different. Maharashrian cuisine is probably more common in Fremont, so glad San Ramon has it as well. read more

We visited Swaraj San Ramon on Saturday June 28 with my husband and my aunt who was visiting from LA. We ordered the silver pomfret fry, along with two Bakris made with rice flour and the Saoji mutton and vada pavs. Overall, the service and food quality were excellent. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the service was absolutely impeccable. There was a slight issue with the mutton--it wasn't cooked the way we expected. When we brought it up, the manager explained that the dish was prepared according to a specific traditional recipe, and kindly acknowledged that they should have clarified that beforehand. They handled it very professionally and even removed the item from our bill, which we truly appreciated. We left impressed by their hospitality and would definitely come back! read more

This restaurant was a great find, a new branch opened in San Ramon, and a must try. The food isn't super spicy, so it has a great blend of flavor and taste. We tried chicken sukka, prawns koliwada, whole Pomfret fish fry and malvani jhinga (prawns). My favorite out of all was the malvani jhinga, it was spicy, tasty and rich in flavor. I've wanted to explore more Maharashtrian cuisine and this one was perfect. The cold drink options were great and rich in quality. Butter milk (taak) wasn't very watery, Lassi was thicker and I tried sol kadi for the first time which is a drink made out of kokum and coconut milk (salty, not sweet). I was delighted to try it. Anjeer kulfi was a great way to end the delicious meal. The manager Raj was friendly and treated us very well. He helped us decide providing his recommendations. If you're looking for a change from the regular Indian food, and are up for some non biriyani dishes, I'd definitely recommend this place. Visited here a couple of weeks ago when I took a bunch of work colleagues for a holiday lunch. I have been to their Santa Clara location a few times and love their food. Liked the ambience, decor of their SR location. Not only it's specious, they also have robot carts bringing your food to the table - great techy vibe. :) Here's what we ordered: 1. The soups: Tamda Rassa, Tomato Saar - both were great. 2. Vada Pav: 5/5 I think, arguably, they make the best vada pav in the bay area 3. Misal: 5/5 the best I have tasted in the bay 4. Sukha Chicken, Mutton: 4/5 would have preferred it a bit less salty but still very flavorful 5. Kolhapuri Chicken: 5/5 very well made with some unique spices 6. Puranpoli: 4/5 7. We ordered paneer rajhans, veg maharaja, and pomfret fry with multiple breads. All the dishes were delicious!! I was so happy to see Jowar bhakhri on their menu and they didn't disappoint. Food was decent although oily, restaurant was ok overall. Considering a baby seat to count for 18% gratuity was total greed . The receipt too had multiple mistakes and when pointed out , the restaurant person got annoyed and said "oh let me add another thing to your tab that I had told was complimentary " . I had forgotten about the many Indian festival names, and it felt good to remember them after reading them from the curtains here. I liked the drinks here. One was sweet, based on shrikhand, which my kids enjoyed. I liked the one that tasted like kadi. The sizzler was the best part. I had almost forgotten about Indian sizzlers until I tried one here, and it tasted amazing. Overall, a really nice place. It's new right now, so it wasn't crowded.
