Yelp led me here based on great ratings, and the experience was great enough such that I won't deviate from the great ratings it's received from other reviewers. Masala Kitchen is by no means fine dining, but rather a more fast casual Indian vegetarian street food type experience where food is cooked to order fresh. It's located inside the farmers market building which I wasn't aware of until I arrived. The service (5/5) from the guy taking food orders and delivering food to the tables was super friendly and pleasant, especially for a place which doesn't have formal waiter service. He definitely took pride in running the business and making sure customers were happy, which is a vibe I don't often get from Indian eateries. We ordered the chole bhature, a kati roll, & masala dosa. The chole bhature (3.5/5) was a little watery and wasn't the best of preparations I've had, but it was decent and came with 2 great big pieces of the bhature/bread. The Kati roll (4.5/5) came cut up into 4 pieces and was incredibly flavorful with the paneer and fillings, but some people dining with me found it too spicy while others raved about it and felt it was perfect. The masala dosa (4/5) was a decent portion for sharing and tasted good, but nothing to rival places which specialize in dosas. They have several Indian dessert options...we tried some jalebi (4.5/5) which was a perfect way to end the meal. The prices were very reasonable and food tasty, so rounding up to 5 stars given it's an informal street food type place with friendly ownership aimed at pleasing all dining guests. Drove about 30 mins from west Philly to New castle farmers market to buy some fresh fish and got hungry after all the walking. Walked by this Indian restaurant and did not bother going inside as it looked empty and dumpy from the outside. Checked out the reviews on my trusty yelp and it had a pretty good rating, so decided to give it a try. I ordered the Dabeli and deconstructed aloo tikki. One bite of that aloo tikki, Bam, I was teleported straight back to my favorite chat place in India. Boy was I so wrong about the looks of the restaurant. Flavors were bold and packed a punch. Medium spicy level was perfect for me. Both the dishes were outstanding. Easily the best chat I had in the USA. Then ordered falooda, which was just okay. Found this place randomly on google as we were passing through the area and decided to give it a shot. It did not disappoint at all. I got the dabeli and hariyali paneer and both were amazing. This is an amazing little place located inside of the New Castle Farmers market. After walking the whole circle around the market and finally locating the store, i would like to help fellow yelpers by informing them to enter at the entrance #4 to reach this joint. We entered from entrance #6 but went left towards the other side instead of taking right towards the shop! To tell you frankly, we were hungry already and the detour did not help, lol! So we ordered dahi puri, papri chaat, mix fresh lime soda, uttapam, vada pav, pav bhaji and usal pav. The dahi puris were pretty delicious for Delaware standards! I have had some incredible chaat in Dallas, NJ, NY and the bay area but had no expectations to find this yummy chat here in Delaware.. oh I am so happy they opened shop! The papri chaat was also very delicious, made with good amount of papri, chutneys and onions. They did not skimp on the ingredients and the dish was the best i have had in US! Many places mess up papri chaat by pouring too much yogurt or too much chutneys, but they did no such thing. The usal pav was very spicy, but i loved it. The uttapam was also well made and filling. The mix fresh lime soda was made well and delicious. The vada pav was also very delicious, with the right amount of spices. Pav bhaji was not too great but just decent - more like a 3/5 dish. This Indian restaurant is inside the New Castle Farmers Market and since the market is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, those are the only days this restaurant is open too. Unlike most other Indian restaurants I've been to, Masala Kitchen is a very simple, unpretentious restaurant. You grab a menu and order at the register. I noticed that the food was vegetarian, which may be a plus to some. I had the 7-Item Thali, which is a combination platter with 3 curries, salad, rice, flat bread, and something else I couldn't figure out. It was quite flavorful and spicy but not really the burning kind of spicy. I suspect it's Northern Indian. The only thing they may need to improve on is the rice. I noticed bits of rice that had dried out and hardened in the rice cooker. Menu prices were very reasonable, compared to most Indian restaurants. In summary, for decent, inexpensive and unpretentious Indian food, this place is worth a visit. read more

Ok..I ate my food before I could take a picture of it. I had to laugh because the thought really did escape me. No exaggeration. I'm new at this. Forgive me. Masala Kitchen is hands down one of my all time favorite places for authentic, Indian street/vendor food and snacks. Some quality can't-put-the-fork-or-food-down-between-bites type of food. For those who like to skim, the food is superb, staff is friendly and the place is only open on the weekend. I frequent just about every weekend and at $3 - $8 per food item (with most being $5) you're getting a clichéd big bang for your buck (I'd pay more for sure). Yes, the place sits in the New Castle Farmers market. That said, while many frequent the market for their staple stores - the BBQ ribs, fresh produce, Amish meat and food stations, seafood or that grill where I see everyone walk away eating monster sausage with giant fried onions hanging out the side of the bun (I digress), I lean towards the almost hidden, all vegetarian Indian food take out/dine in restaurant. You could miss this place is you walked fast enough, which is almost impossible to do at the farmers market. The decor is mixed with mainly heavy square wooden tables and what I would consider traditional hand crafted India-inspired, wooden backed chairs. There's a subtle splash of modern in the lit food wall display and you're also almost guaranteed a Bollywood style movie to keep you entertained while you wait...and wait you will, so hang tight and be patient while your masterpiece is crafted in the back. I prefer it this way - made just for me. When I'm in a hurry I call the order in while in route and it's hot and ready when I arrive (suggested). The vada pav is a must try here. A perfect ball of potato spicy goodness in a warm, soft, fluffy bun. On this visit, I had the deconstructed aloo tikki. Deconstructed? YESS!! Who does that to Indian food in Delaware?! I also ordered a mango lassi, and a few pretzel shaped jalebi (Indian funnel cake). And a pair of samosa. And walked away with only handing a lonely $13 for huge bag of food. Spices in the deconstructed aloo tikki were on point, showcasing the hot and sweet chutney mixed throughout. The jalebi was so sweet and the mango lassi, while I hear is an acquired taste for some, was just as good, if not better than a mango smoothie. I bit off the top of one of my samosa but that is a guaranteed treat for me to enjoy later in the evening. If you're in the area and in the mood for a true taste of Indian "nummy nummy street food" and an insane tastegasam, stop by and try a few items. By looking at the rating here, I had high expectations from this place but if you go by the reviews, I would say it's way over rated. Not that the food is bad, but it's just ordinary taste and nothing special given 4.5 rating. The restaurant is inside farmer's market so it was little hard to find but I called them up. The whole area had a very unpleasant meat smell. There are just few tables and chairs lying around which to me doesn't matter as long as food is good. But coming to food, Dabeli was okay but overpowered by chutney taste, probably because it had so much chutney that the whole bottom part of pav became totally damp. Aloo tikki chat (deconstructed aloo tikki) had chole with chutney and sev on top and tikki was lost somewhere so you would have to find it but the overall taste isn't bad, it's just that I've had way better ones. Chole bhatura was the least tasty out of all three with undercooked bhatura and bland chole. The chole they gave with aloo tikki had better taste as it had chutney and sev mixed. Mango lassi was one thing which I liked but that's one thing which has such less chances of going wrong. I would probably not be visiting here again. read more

Looking for chicken tikka masala? You won't find chicken or tikka masala here. Instead you'll find delicious, authentic, spicy vegetarian South Indian street food. This ain't salad: it's hearty fare that sticks to your ribs like pav bhaji (soft bread rolls with spicy veg curry), idli sambhar (lentil/rice dumplings with vegetable stew) and my favorite, chaat (think Indian nachos). There's even a pretty decent felafel pita. It's all tasty and authentic--the sort of stuff my family eats! Try it out if it's new, or if you've had South Indian food before, come get the real thing! Pro: Seriously great Indian food! I admit that I'm a bit leery of any vegetarian cuisine; the idea of a meal without any animal flesh usually makes me sad. However, Masala Kitchen has made me reconsider my carnivorous culinary strategy! The mixed pakora (vegetables battered, served with tamarind and cilantro chutney) were about as tasty as an appetizer can get! Their crunchy texture mixed with flavorful dipping sauces were worth the visit alone. Also, the pair of samosa (potatoes, peas and spices filled in a triangular pastry served with tamarind and cilantro chutney) followed along the same suit of great flavors, but with a flakier crust. The spicy sauce (available upon request) only made these delights better... Con: It's a slight shame that such great food is housed inside of a congested indoor market. I would pay double the money for this level of food in a place of swankier ambiance...and still feel like I'm ripping them off! Also, the falafel was just okay. Given how great the other dishes were, the aforementioned fell short a bit... Bottom Line: Masala Kitchen is a very inexpensive option for great vegetarian cuisine. Very disappointed with the food yesterday. The puri in alu puri was stale and really difficult to eat. We ordered masala fries and in the meantime they had a bunch of online orders. They made us wait for masala fries for 25 mins (probably forgot about the masala fries) and started making it when we reminded them. Then, they served plain fries and when asked if this was masala fries they said it was definitely masala fries. I had spoken to the lady before ordering and had asked her for the description of what it was but when they served it; there was no masala and no cilantro but still charged us $5.75 for plain fries. Delicious home-cooked tasting Indian food! The samosa chaat (aka "deconstructed samosa") was quite saucy and delicious. We also got the thali, which was the perfect blend of veggies, lentils, rice, and delicately thin roti. The mango lassi hit the spot as well. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Excellent vada pav! This is good old Bombay street food, the Indian counterpart of a veggie burger. The most authentic vada pav I have tasted in USA. Had a chance to converse with the owner, they import their spices, and source other ingredients from India too. Try the Gujarati 'roti' typically called 'rotli'. Very soft, fresh and made just like homemade food. We also ate samosa, quite good; but I happen to have tasted the rare better version, hence the 4 stars. The place can be a bit difficult to locate, but call them and they can give you directions. Food is decently priced; remember you are there for food, not ambience.. Enjoy! read more
