I don't get Indian restaurants in the US. They Americanize Indian food too much. We ordered a thali, dhokla, jalebi and dabeli at masala kitchen. Thali was a little above average. I have tried several dishes on the menu and have loved whatever I picked every single time. However my favorite has to be the falafel, mix pakora, or vada pav. The cilantro chutney is also another favorite! It goes well with everything, I even looked up a recipe on pinterest but obviously it wouldn't come close to being as good as theirs. Overall my review might be bias due to my everlasting love for indian food but if you visit you will not be disappointed by the variety of tasty food they have to offer. This is a very simple and unpretentious place. It is a tiny South Indian restaurant inside the decidedly down market New Castle Framers Market. The food at masala Kitchen is 100% authentic South Indian food, except for the level of spiciness. Food in South Indian restaurants is typically extremely spicy. This is especially true in small hole-in-the-wall sort of places, like this. This, however, is not the case at Masalla Kitchen (pace Jennilee D's review). For those who have not eaten South Indian food, this is a completely different cuisine from the food found in most Indian restaurants in the U.S. Don't expect ANY of the same dishes, although there may be occasional overlap. South Indian restaurants are often vegetarian, as is Masala Kitchen. That does not mean that it isn't satisfying, but it is important not to have an expectation that it will be just like that in North Indian restaurants. The owner is very helpful in suggesting dishes and in explaining what the foods are like. If you are an adventurous eater who is looking for something new, or if, like us, you have lived in SE Asia where most of the Indian restaurants are S. Indian and grew to love the food, this is a great addition. It seems that Delaware has become a much more cosmopolitan place than it was before! I love chaats. Being from India, it is very difficult to find the kind of quality I am used to back in India.. Most indian restaurants in Delaware region serve stale or food which just does not make my stomach happy. Then I heard of masala kitchen, I just had to try this restaurant. The chaats we get here are awesome and quite delicious and the staff are friendly as well. Only down point I see is the location, but frankly I do not mind that as well, as I am getting good authentic gujju food!! Loved it They also provide fresh chapathis in bulk. The husband and I were walking around the Farmer's Market (FYI - this is inside the Farmer's Market tucked away in the back corner) and were hungry from some lunch. Naturally, we gravitated towards the new Indian place. We ordered 3 things - we're over-eaters! We started with the Papdi Chaat. Crunch chips in a yogurt based sauce with chickpeas and spices. If you are vegetarian or vegan, you know how hard it is to find a good fast food place to chow down! I usual go to the New Castle Farmers Market for the fruit stores, and Amish section. I've walked past this restaurant many times, always in a rush. Finally after reading a few reviews, I made time to stop in. They have actual plates sat out with food on them so you can see what the dish will look like, as well as picture menus. If you are new to Indian food, you can get a sense of what you are getting. The food didn't take too long to come out. Everything was delicious! My husband and I had some nice spicy dishes, while my son enjoyed his basmati rice. My phone died so I didn't get to take many pictures. There are many tables to sit at and enjoy your meal. My experience was pleasant. read more

On a rainy and cold saturday night, my wife and I didnt feel like cooking so we opted to eat out. While browsing through local restaurants, we came across this vegetarian Indian restaurant. It was also located on a familiar place where we do our shopping for fresh vegetables inside New Castle Farmers Market. Upon entering the restaurant, we saw one employee sitting in the back. We picked up a menu and proceeded to sit down. Not sure how they conduct customer service, but it was quite non existent. Puzzled by the fact that the employee didnt move from his seat in the back, we went to the empty register to order. Only then did he decide to get up. We ordered samosa, vegetable puff and two entrees along with mango juice and mango lasse. He gave us a number and told us the kitchen would call our number when ready. After several minutes, the kitchen called our number, but it was only for our vegetable puff. I proceeded to get up myself and grab the tray. Several minutes later, the samosas were done. Again, I got up to get a tray from the kitchen. At this moment, I realized the gentleman wasn't there to serve us. He never even told us where to get our drinks. I found our mango drinks in the fridge and got them myself. Next, one of our entrees was called up. Again, I went to the kitchen to retrieve it. At this time, it was getting "busier." By that, I mean three additional tables. We were the first ones there around 630pm. As our final entree got called, the gentleman finally brings us our food. I guess one out of four trays isn't bad...Food tasted quite good, but service is basically nonexistent. Not sure if that's the intention of the restaurant. My husband and I go here just about every weekend. We look forward to it. It's been such a great adventure trying our way through the large and changing menu and the owners are kind and love to educate us about the food when we ask. There's a real joy in the food and a pride in it that is so amazing. I was hesitant to try it at first. I love meat and the idea of eating a number of new foods filled with vegetables I may not normally like or eat didn't seem that appealing. I am so thankful my husband was so persistent! There were a lot of things like chickpeas that I used to avoid that I now eat happily. It's been a positive change! The prices are very, very reasonable. We can both eat and leave full with just $10 or less spent on food in total. As in all together. They could raise everything by a dollar or two and we would still consider ourselves as coming out ahead when it comes to price and value. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

The best Indian food spot by far. The samosas are delicious I love the Mango Lassie, it is to die for. MK is located inside the farmers market next to the Treasure Hunt store. This place is by far the best Indian chaat place I have been to (and I actively seek out chaat places every state I visit), and I do not understand how any one can say otherwise. I would even go to say that some of the chaat I had here was better than at most chaat stores in India. Clearly, I'm a fan. On my multiple visits, I have tried their pani puri, dahi aloo puri, paapadi chaat, deconstructed aloo tikki and samosa, pav bhaji, ragada patties, paranthas, chole bature, masala chaas.. all brilliant. Recently, they added Dabelis to their menu (I couldn't believe my eyes, as I have never found dabelis anywhere in the US!), and they were the best dabelis I have ever had. The service is a bit slow, but it is SO well worth the few minutes extra wait. The owner seems like a very genuine and sincere man, who clearly works very hard, and really cares about this place. Nice place, nice owners, good home style cooking. I have tried their Sev Puri and the thali. Both were good. Some of the other reviewers said that this is a South Indian place. It is not. This is Bombay style food in Gujarathi style. So, dishes tend to have a touch of sweet to them. I will ask the owner to cut back on the sweet when I get sev Puri next time. Hmm...this is probably not the place for you if you are new to Indian as we were. Their "mild" killed out mouths and had us all practically crying. The flavor was good, however it was just very spicy. They are very cheap though. We fed 5 people for less than $30 with tip including drinks. It's nothing fancy, just a little hole in the wall, but if you got a thing for not feeling your tongue and are trying to save money, I would totally recommend this place. Love the Chaat items /Indian snack items available. The staff are very courteous and friendly, and super attentive.
