Was craving Indian food and decided to try a new place. Looked up to see which restaurant won "Best Indian 2018" in D Magazine -Chennai Cafe it is. Arrived with a party of 3 on a Sunday night around 7pm. The Restaurant was completely empty. We were seated immediately. Unfortunately, we missed the lunch buffet. They do lunch buffet everyday and for dinner on Saturdays. This is the only place I've been to that does a dinner buffet. We ordered Vindaloo with lamb, Tikka Masala with Paneer, and Chicken Biryani. The waiter asked if spicy was okay, we all nodded "yes, spicy please". Even though we were the only diners the whole time we ate there, the food did seem to come out a little slow. Vindaloo Curry is what I typically order at Indian places. Not sure if it is because I haven't had Vinadaloo curry in a while, but Chennai's version seem to taste better than all other ones I've had before. The only kicker was that there was no kick. It has the pepper symbol next to the description on the menu, but we wanted it to be spicier. Both the Tikka Masala and Chicken Biryani was solid. Nothing to write home about, but no complaints. Overall, the food was good. Great flavors, decent portion sizes. The whole table agreed that the food could have been a little spicier. I'd like to go back during a buffet. I work in an office building a stones throw from Chennai Cafe and come here once a week. There are a couple good Indian places I like in Dallas, but this is definitely my favorite. As someone who has been to India and eaten the finest cooking there, I can honestly say this place is as good as the food I have eaten in India. A lot of Indian restaurants cater to a traditional American pallet, reducing the levels of traditional spices, and in the process, lose the rich cultural flavor of authentic Indian cooking. The first time I ate at Chennai Cafe, I remember the delight I experienced as I tasted that richness and the complexity of flavors I came to love in India, but have struggled to find in America. A final note is that the owner, manager, and employees of Chennai Cafe are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. I am treated like more than a customer. At this restaurant I feel like a friend. I run an organization in Southern India remotely from America, and some of my closest friends and family are in India. I come to Chennai Cafe not only for the food, but because every time I come it makes me feel like I am in India with my dear friends and family I rarely get to see. Quality of food wasn't good at all. I had ordered Saag Paneer which was watery liquid. And very blend, no flavor. I am glad that I didn't order more food, though I did try to order Tadka Daal fem menu and they didn't have it. In fact they didn't have any type of daal! Wow! We first smelled the delicious smells and had to come try the Indian food! We were amazed at the fabulous all you can eat buffet which you can also take home (charge by the pound)!!! I love the seafood curry, chicken Marsala, lentil soup, cabbage, beets, naan bread, chai tea...I could go on and on and on!!! Very clean with a nice and friendly staff!!! Here's what would greatly improve the buffet experience - having actual food. In the 30 minutes that I sat there waiting for the buffet to be refilled the butter chicken tray remained resolutely empty. You'd think that a staple of Indian buffets would get some attention but the manager smiled and told me that the 3 remaining peices of chicken floating in the sea of sauce was a good choice. The only other meat option was refrigerator cold chicken from a tray that wasn't heated. Naan also wasn't available which is kind of the whole point of going to these places. Not going to waste my money here again when there are plenty of other options in 5 minutes drive. Watching another buffet goer rub her hand all over her nose right before picking up the serving tongs really didn't help the overall experience much either read more

I went to this location the other day for lunch and they have a lunch buffet for 10.99. It's really inexpensive for a buffet I admit but I felt like the food selection was not worth it. The service was great and the food was good but nothing too great. They probably had like couple curries. The chicken tikka Masala was the best out of everything but again it wasn't anything special. The kheer was so bland and you could tell they made no effort with that. I've been to their location in frisco and that location is far more superior when it comes to variety of food. I do believe that the customer service here is better but since I've been to the frisco location I was disappointed and won't be going back unfortunately. read more

Went here this evening with my sister and brother. Best Indian food I've had since I moved back to Dallas! We had chicken tikka masala with garlic naan, kothu parotta, and chickpea curry. The kothu parotta was delicious! I had never tried that dish before and it did not disappoint! Chicken tikka had the right amount of spice and chickpea curry was solid. Very Bad service. It took 1 hour 15 minutes to prepare an order for To-go. I was told it will take 20 minutes to prepare the food. I asked for a coffee till the time my order is getting prepared. My coffee came after 40 minutes that also having processed coffee in the cup. They typically forgot my order. I came home and my chicken was all burnt, basically overcooked. Very disappointed in wasting my money on dinning order. My wife ate home-made sandwich waiting for the food. highly disappointed with Chennai Cafe food quality and service. Adding to my review: My order is missing sambar for idli and vada. I especially asked for sambar for both the orders. Man this going crazy ! I found out about this place when they came to my office building as part of Fooda, and was delighted to find out they were just down the street from my apartment! Boyfriend and I visited during a weeknight dinner and ordered an appetizer, dosa, and butter masala paneer. Everything was so good! Worst food I've ever had. I poured out the first rice and there was a wonderful black Indian/ Pakistan hair in it. My finance and I had interesting stomach feelings after. Wow! Their Kara Kuzhambu is one of the best I've had including many good restaurants in Tamil Nadu, which is where the dish originates from. They serve the Kuzhambu in their lunch buffet which is totally worth it! Have become a regular here now. read more

This is the place to come if you want typical South Indian food. A.K.A Kerala style. The favorites are masala dosa, idly, sambar, chappathi, butter chicken. The buffet is great and worth coming in early for. The service is always nice and friendly. Have been coming for years now. Chennai cafe has been one of our FAVORITE Indian restaurants. We're from okc so to find a restaurant that actually serves Our South Indian favorites like a Kerala style fish curry and cuppa and delicious goat curry is hard to find. Also you get hot chai to drink with the buffet for free. They did irritate me a little today because the waitress seemed clueless and irritated for asking for ice with our water. She left out cups empty even though she kept eyeing our table. She just seemed out of it. I'm guessing she may be new so I'm going to just ignore that lack of service. Also today before we came I called and asked if they had goat curry because my husband had been craving it and we were driving out of our way to come there. If they didn't have goat curry we were not going to go. When we arrived , there was no goat curry and all we got was "I'm sorry" Another time we absolutely disliked it was when we ordered food off the menu. I absolutely recommend the buffet over menu order. This place is a gem and I crave it once I go back to okc... I do hope they get with the program though with what's really on their menu and better waiting on patrons. read more
