Not exaggerating: this is the best Indian food I've ever had. Not just in London. Anywhere. Each bite was an explosion of flavors and just-right heat. And no two dishes were alike. Trust the waitress (ours was the terrific Anna, I believe) and order what she says starting with Balla Papdi Chaat and Samosa Chaat, then the Lamb Roganjosh Shepard's Pie (clever!), Chicken , dal to slather on puffy garlic naan, and Kingfish Curry. End with the best thing on the menu: Jungle Chicken, a curry leg with fresh fenugreek. Just amazing. Really disappointing. Granted - I had just been to "The best Indian restaurant in London" a week prior, so I my expectations were high. I got the Gol Guppa Pops starter and the Konkan Veg Curry (pumpkin curry). The puri starters were pretty bland and way too salty. The pumpkin curry tasted like it had been bought frozen and then re-heated and was not very flavorful. The only good part of the meal was the dessert: I got the chocolate cake with coconut gelato. The texture and flavor was fantastic. I also appreciated that they offered a good amount of vegan options. Overall: save your money and go to a different Indian restaurant. read more

I'm an expert in American-ized Indian food, specifically Northern Indian and cooked by those of the New Jersey breed. That said, I've heard things are different in Londontown and I was really excited to try something new. Masala Zone claims to represent many parts of Indian cuisine in one menu - But I was hard pressed to find anything that is considered standard on a US menu minus the tandoori and chicken korma. But hey, I'm up for adventure, so there is an opportunity for trying new things! My group ordered Undhiyo & Lentil Khichdi, Chicken Mangalore, Chicken Saffron Korma, Chole (Chickpeas) Masala, Fresh Baby Spinach With Garlic, and garlic naan. The chicken mangalore was the hands down best dish on the table, with a good amount of heat, bursting flavors, and tender chicken. The Undhiyo was okay, with a good mix of veggies, but no distinct flavors that wowed me. The Chicken Korma served its purpose as a non-spicy dish to ease up on the flavors of the other two. The sides were unremarkable, meaning they were good, but nothing special. The service is good and food is delivered very quickly. Its definitely fun to try many dishes and share with friends. My friend also got a masala coke, which was tasty and made your tummy feel warm from the spices. The location is bright and open, which is great for groups. We came for a late lunch, so I can't comment on the crowds. The value is also okay. read more

I love the thalis here. The flavours please my palate every time, and the small, manageable portions mean I can enjoy Indian family-style dining without leaving the restaurant feeling as if I've stuffed myself stupid or that I've been robbed of my coffers. The decor is vivid and retro colonial. When you pass by the windows on the outside pavement, the place looks packed, as they always sit customers by the windows, likely to affect a high volume of business. Be careful about this when you arrive, however, as the windows can be especially drafty in areas. Perhaps they're not double-glazed. The staff explains the concept of the thalis thoroughly, which can be annoying if you've already heard the run-down but are too polite to interject. After the initial order-taking portion of your visit, the service goes steeply downhill, sadly. Diners consistently have to flag down their servers to get additional drinks and the bill. If the service were better, I would rate this location 4 stars. read more

This was the best Indian food I have ever had in my life. I tried two dishes I have never heard of before- green chicken curry (the Indian version, not Thai) and multani chicken!! I would eat this meal a hundred times over again. We also had garlic and cheese naan... that blew me away! A-OK pretty much sums up my experience here. I went one night before a gig and it immediately struck me as a fan if Indian food, but it had a different feel to it. It seemed somehow cooler and with more of a buzz than some of the lower-key places you see. We were treated to a generous welcome and the menu offers something different, too, by way of the thalis. That said, my meal was nothing special. It filled a hole and I was satisfied, but it wasn't particularly inspiring or memorable. I haven't wanted to rush back to go again, but if the chance came up I wouldn't say no. read more

They have neat little combination platters with miniature portions to allow one to have a number of dishes, and it's not expensive, but it's also just pretty boring. As a lover of Indian food, I was very excited to try Masala Zone which is beautifully decorated and as you may've heard/read, a chain. The wait staff was friendly and helpful, explaining the menu and the thalis. Now I'm not stupid and I can read, so I didn't exactly need the explanation---as a matter of fact, the explanation was a bit more complicated than what I figured out on my own. While the food was tasty and salty, there wasn't that much even with all that came in the thali. The price (and yes, I know about the exchange rate an all) seemed a bit high expecially given what we'd had. Don't know if it's because it's a different region but it didn't seem like the traditional fare was available. Then again, they pride themselves on this being street food. Come on, I just wanted channa masala! Not a fan and wouldn't return---and if you're looking for accessibility, don't bother. read more

The food here is delicious and fresh, maybe a little overpriced but not overly so. I had garlic naan, Saffron curry with steamed rice and a Mango lassi. It was early in the evening and the restaurant wasn't crowded so pleasant atmosphere to talk without shouting. I missed a little the Indian feeling when you enter this Masala Zone. The one in Soho meets more my taste but that's up to everyone else. Staff was attentive and professional, although the manager (?) was quite rude by talking rather loudly on the phone whenever he received a call. It wasn't loud in the restaurant, so I saw no need for him to shout. This Masala Zone is about 5min from Camden Town Station and also easily reached by the buses 272 and C2. read more

But being that I don't want to rate it too high and be called a fool, I gave it an average rating... plus, I like to support independent restaurants rather than chains. But, chicken madras, excellent. The spinach, excellent. Garlic naan, addictive. Cobra beer, perfect. My daughter who is not a fan of Indian food insisted we try some while in London. This place was a hit. The service was excellent. The explanations clear. Our waiter took pity on us as we ravenously order three Grand Thalis and a child Thali. The curries were excellent for our American palates. My daughter loved her Mango Lassi. It's been a while since my taste buds have been tempted by a curry. Don't get me wrong, I am not a curry-hater in any way, but of late my palate has been straying towards Vietnamese noodles, strawberry sorbet and pasta. However, I finally gave in and went here, despite working a few doors down from one for like two years and it's pretty good. The prices are very reasonable and the thali's are a nice little mix of curry-treats. I've yet to try more on the menu, but it's definitely going to be a place I'm going to add on my fail-safe dining lists. Meh. The food was pretty mediocre. I had a chicken tikka dish that wasn't particularly fresh or flavourful. To make matters worse, I found a large piece of plastic in my food. We went there one Sunday evening and experience a "Faulty Tower" moment. Our waitress didn't understand English well, and we ended up with order mix-ups. To begin with, I ordered sparkling mineral water and received still. We asked our waitress what kind of pastry was used for the Vegetable Samosa, and she said it was potato and peas. We rephrased our question, but we still did not get a proper answer, so we gave up ordering it. She then brought us Naan Bread instead of steamed rice. We returned it but was still charged for Naan Bread. Lastly, we asked her what Gulab Jamun was. She said it was hot milk. At this point, we were fed up, so we asked someone else. As for the food, only two dishes were good. Bhel was full of flavour and had a lovely mixture of different texture, and Dhaaba Roghan Josh had wonderful flavour and taste. We ordered one Thali. Mutton (Menu said Lamb, but our receipt said mutton) Kolhapuri tasted like onion gravy and completely lacked flavour. It was really unpleasant. Dhal was tasty, but other two vegetable dishes lacked flavour. Steamed rice was perfectly cooked. Rasmalai was cooked with saffron, and it was overpowering. I personally prefer a simple cardamom flavour. Gulab Jamun was just store bought, and they charged £4.90 for one small jamun and a scoop of ordinary vanilla ice cream. Despite the awful service, they wacked a 12.5% service charge. They really need to up their game. read more

The thali sets are good value for money as you get a great selection of food that is very filling. This branch of Masala Zone has a really nice atmosphere and great decor which makes you feel nice and warm on a winter's evening. The service at Masala Zone really makes it stand out from the rest - staff were very attentive and helpful when picking out items from the menu. I don't know if they can keep this up when the restaurant is at full capacity as it was only half full when I visited with a friend, but it seems like they have all been really well trained and enjoy their jobs so I suspect so. I don't know if I would visit often due to the price outside of the lunchtime thali set deal; it is quite expensive for a meal for two even before you order drinks. This is a great spot for a slightly more expensive outing when you fancy something a little more polished than your usual indian restaurant. read more

This Covent Garden branch has just recently reopened after a major refurb so I was keen to check it out. Between the 3 of us we shared some street-food starters and 4 main courses (yes we were hungry). The Thalis are still just as consistent and tasty as are the masala coke's. I've eaten here twice and to be honest I wasn't very impressed. As far as the quality of food went it was okay but I felt like I could get exactly the same quality of food from tesco for half the price. The service was pretty slow which wouldn't usually bother me but as i was on my lunch break it was a bit frustrating. The main problem with this place is that it has no character at all and no atmosphere. The food is average, the service is ok but not great so it isn't strictly somewhere that I would avoid, if other people want to go there I wouldn't object but I certainly wouldn't choose to eat there. read more

Masala Zone is one of the best Indian foods I have tasted outside of India. Masala zone has various branches; each with its own theme. I generally have the Thaalis at Masala Zone. For those not familiar with the Thali - In parts of north India and west India, there is no concept of a starter, mains, and deserts. It's all rolled into one called a Thali which generally consists of Rice, Chapatti, Lentils, buttermilk, different combinations of vegetables and spices, which may be spicy or sweet. You also get a small portion of Farsan (savoury) equivalent to a starter and a small piece of sweet. I usually go for a Grand Thaali or a Starter and regular Thaali. I tent to rate restaurants on how well they can handle special orders since I have food allergies. I informed the host that I had an allergy as we sat down and he said to inform my waiter which of course I did. Although I had the feeling that my waiters English was not strong enough to understand me. Fortunately when my food came the host saw my plate and removed it right away because of course the waiter had got it wrong. So yes there was a mistake made but fortunately it was fixed before any damage occurred. I did enjoy my food as did the rest of my party but I am hesitant to go back. The price is very reasonable they have a special of two courses for around £8. Everyone in my family ordered a version of the Thali which is said to be an authentic Indian dinner composed of a nutritionally balanced meal. They also have a variety of street foods to try. It is a bit of a different theme to your traditional Indian restaurants so if you are a lucky one and can eat anything then I would recommend it, if the wrong food can land you in the hospital then I would avoid it. read more

When building work started over a year ago at the derelict Rat and Parrot pub next door, we never imagined how much our lives would be ruined by constant building work from dawn til dusk, 7 days a week. When the refurbishment was finally finished in December, and Masala Zone opened its doors, the manager came over to apologise personally for the disruption, and gave us a voucher for a meal for two. So, already pleased by our new neighbours, we went for our meal and were very impressed. The big thing here is the thali - a mixture of curries and sides served on one metal plate and you can choose from any of the main curries on the menu to be included in your meal. We had two different starters, and both were delicious. And our thalis did not disappoint. The restaurant is really nicely done-up, with prints of Indian posters covering the walls and gorgeous coloured glass lampshades. And the staff were extremely attentive, knew the menu really well and made some good suggestions for the food and wine, without being pushy. Overall, it was a delightful meal and would recommend this particular Masala Zone (it's part of a small chain) very highly. read more

Masala Zone is a chain and I have been to most of them. This one is nice because it does not get very full (except on some weekends). This is nice because then you don't feel rushed as in some of the other busier restaurants in the chain. Food overall is nice, but there is a lack of choice. You can only choose from the set dishes on the menu, no alternative with another meat or no meat can be made. However the thali is usually lovely, and I found I could share a grand thali quite comfortably with my boyfriend. Top recommendation however would be the street foods. Pretty crap. The food was alright, I suppose, if expensive (if you have more time than we did, there are lots of wonderful Indian places near Drummond Street that also offer thali etc), but the service was AWFUL - the waitress took our order, and then abandoned us for the rest of the meal. When our thali arrived it was missing a chapatti. I asked about this from the server and he said that I was incorrect, and that it definitely did not come with it, which was a lie. We spent the entirety of our meal trying to catch the eye of the waiter, and failing. Nobody checked up on us, not even to refill water, so we ate our meal without. When we finally managed to get a waiter's attention after we'd finished, we explained, but no real apology was offered, although a minimal amount (£1.50) was taken off the bill. Then another waiter tried to give us dessert menus, despite having ignored us for the rest of the time. And then a 12.5% service charge was added. Would not recommend. read more
