How good is this place? Enough so that I dusted off my Yelp account to talk it up! My family and I stopped in here on a whim on our pilgrimage up I-81 because it sounded interesting and was open on Christmas Eve. We stopped again on our way back, and everyone wants to keep stopping to eat there. The flavors are fantastic and the ingredients are fresh (and many locally sourced within the Shenendoah valley, apparently). Including both stops, we sampled the bibimbap (beef bulgogi), japchae (once with pork belly and once with chicken), chicken katsu, and kimbap. The flavor balances and interplays were amazingly well done and every mouthful was a delight, including for a couple of relatively picky young eaters. The bibimbap was probably my favorite, as the fresh greens and well-made rice enhanced the excellent flavor of the beef bulgogi. I found the portion size pretty much exactly to my palate, but I am not a "big eater"; if you're into huge amounts, you might find you need more, but this was a perfectly-sized lunch for me. The chicken katsu was impressive, being tender on the inside while crispy on the outside with a delicious sauce. I greatly admire the chef for using chicken thigh, which is perhaps why that balance was so well conceived. Katsu I've had with chicken breast is usually either a bit dry or not very crispy, but the thigh meat really lets the dish shine (and both kids loved it). The japchae with glass noodles were fantastic. My wife commented that the japchae with pork belly was her preference because the noodles for the chicken version were just a bit "wetter." I likely wouldn't have noticed myself, but the pork belly dish did seem a bit lighter (and it's definitely worth it to get the pork belly!). The kimbap was a very pleasant surprise. What initially looked just to be a sushi roll with braised pork instead of fish turned out to have a fantastic balance of flavors and textures and was truly delicious. It's hard to say whether I liked that of the bibimbap more. That was a fusion I've never seen or tasted before and I am glad I did. Fantastic. We did try a sake margarita too, and that was a light, refreshing cocktail. The wait staff both days were friendly and helpful. Even the second day, when it was much more busy, they were constantly buzzing around and checking in on how we were enjoying our meal. It appears that the later lunch times is when the rush drops a bit and they aren't as busy. Overall, this is now one of my favorite places to stop and eat. I was truly impressed at the quality and balance of the dishes and I look forward to stopping in regularly for a long time to come. read more

Mashita was absolutely amazing! We got the following in the pictures to share and were full after finishing it. The buns were so soft, and everything was a total flavor explosion! As big city transplants now living in the mountains of Virginia (nearly 2 hours from a Target), was craving Korean food while making a Costco run in Harrisonburg. The ambience inside is very college town atmosphere, rightly so since it is near JMU. Our server Mary Page was on point, knowledgeable and engaging. I wish I could hire her at my restaurants. She recommended the buns, and the pork belly bun was delicious. Nice sponginess on the buns, and the pork belly was pretty decent. Like a BBQ joint, the choices of sauces at the table was cool. Itbwas as good as the ones I had Momofuku, so kudos to them. Washed down with a local pilsner, so far so good. Next course was the gimbap. We opted to go vegetarian without protein on it. The carrots in it were raw, and not sautéed. As a result, the taste was odd... I would pass on the gimbap. Too bad, bc it is one of my wife's favorites. For entrées we had the bibimbap and chicken katsu. For the bibimbap, it is a safe bet at almost any Korean restaurant. You can't really mess up a bibimbap. Surprisingly, The veggies were raw, and not sautéed. More of a salad than bibimbap. No namul on it. It works for a small college town fusion bibimbap. Server checked in on us, and was engaging. I had hoped for a traditional pork katsu, but chicken is the only option. Chicken was crispy, moist on the inside. Topped with generous amounts of scallions. The sauce is not the traditional katsu sauce, more of a sweet soy sauce. But good. No banchan offered, or on the menu as an extra. Would we come back? Absolutely. Just dont expect traditional Korean food, and ask for Mary Page as your server. read more

Ran to about $80. 3.5 stars, but my vote outvoted my partner's. maybe it deserves more for being a Korean restaurant in a city where there are not many choices for Korean food, but being from Northern Virginia, it's hard to give it more stars. Loved this place! It's a quaint spot in downtown Harrisonburg and a must try if you are in the area. Their menu goes beyond a typical Korean bbq menu and has a variety of appetizers and main courses. I ordered the fried gnocchi start and it was phenomenal. For my entree I got the steamed buns with bulgogi and pork belly which are two of my favorites. One of the best restaurants in Harrisonburg. Fun, friendly atmosphere and delicious, unique food. I've been many times and I'm never disappointed. They've recently expanded, and offer both indoor and outdoor seating. The japchae with chicken bulgogi, spicy, is my go-to, but the other regular menu items are equally good--I love the kimchi fries, dumplings, burrito, and of course, the steamed buns. There are always several in-season specials to choose from, and we often opt for them. I'm not into wings, but my husband says they're about the best he's ever had. Mashita's is the best Korean food in Harrisonburg. It is an excellent blend of authentic Korean food and the Chef's creativity. There are combinations on the menu that you might question, but only until they hit your taste buds. The pork belly or brisket are so savory. Love their new physical location. One of our top 5 fav places to eat in Harrisonburg! The bulgogi bibimbap was perfect as was the brisket burrito. The three house sauces (sweet soy, gochujang, and house sweet and savory) are key, taking both dishes to the next level. Staff are super friendly. If I were to make a suggestion it would be to remove the extra dollar charge for grilling the burrito. Just seems weird. If you must, just add a buck to the total price. Our dessert had room for improvement, unlike the rest of the meal. The fried doughnut holes with hot apple compote were fine, but just that. They were a little over done and in our opinion should be bigger in size to allow for more "doughiness" to add some contrast in textures. In any case great experience. Great restaurant! I got the Japchae which was incredible. Also got the two sorbets- a cherry mint and a lime one that was SO good. The atmosphere is very nice, especially if you sit outside where there is a large mural and lights. The service was good and our waitress was very nice! The food was okay, but we will never go back because of the TERRIBLE experience we had with Mikey and the management there. We rented the back room for my son's rehearsal dinner for $300 for two hours, and our guests purchased well over $1,000 in food and beverages. However, the server neglected to tell us that they charged us over $200 gratuity, so my husband added $275 gratuity to the credit card receipt when he signed it. When we got home and realized what happened, we called and explained the situation to the owner, and asked if he could give us a gift receipt for some of that duplicate charge (not even asking him to return the money to us). Mikey then emailed my son (on his honeymoon!) to threaten that we better just let them keep the nearly $500 gratuity or he would charge us an additional $500 because we were there an extra half an hour. During that last half hour, the room was open and other people came in and were served. So, consider yourself warned: they will lie and cheat you out of your money, and then threaten you if you dare to ask for their cooperation to work out a compromise. The lack of business acumen and customer service is astounding. One star - do not recommend. UPDATE: My son and new wife just returned from their honeymoon which was ruined by Mikey emailing them ANOTHER invoice for an ADDITIONAL $550. My son will pay it just to end this nightmare, but I am truly stunned by the level of just plain meanness from the management here. read more

Came here a few days ago and got the bulgogi buns combo with their sweet and spicy Mashita sauce and a side of kimchi! The buns were nice and soft and the meat were so flavorful! I didn't think the sauce was needed. Their kimchi was a pickled kimchi. It's not bad, but I prefer my kimchi to have that deep red color. Just personal preference! Quality food, quality business We used Mashita's to cater our rehearsal dinner. We were a little worried that some of our picky eaters wouldn't like it, but everyone absolutely loved the food. The beef bulgogi and steamed buns were a hit! Everything had tons of flavor and the meat was very tender. The restaurant easily accommodated our guests with gluten free restrictions.
