But Mason Jar isn't just a bar, it's a BBQ joint. And if the team didn't just have lunch, we probably would have devoured some ribs. The spot was spacious, and was pretty empty because it was a 2pm on a Friday. I see this spot getting rowdy for a happy hour, or during a big game. The last time I had BBQ was in Texas. It will be tough to beat what I had there. But the second I walked into Mason Jar it smelled like I was back in Texas. I still smell as I type this. I'm sad I was so full. Anyways, the guy behind the bar mad sure we had coffees and for me a ginger ale as we worked away for an hour or so together. We came here as a group of nine on a Thursday night and were seated right away, which was such a great start to the evening. I ordered the Braised Short Rib with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms, and it did not disappoint. The short rib was incredibly tender, falling apart with ease and practically melting in your mouth. The garlic mashed potatoes were soft, fluffy, and absolutely to die for, with just the right amount of garlic flavor coming through. The sautéed mushrooms added that perfect umami richness and paired beautifully with the dish. Personally, I would have preferred for the mushrooms to be served on the side rather than on top of the short rib, but that's just my style. The atmosphere was exactly what you'd want from a lively sports bar, energetic yet still comfortable. This was a decent sports bar to visit in the city. They had plenty of TVs showing all the New York teams, which made it a fun spot to catch a game. The service was excellent, the waiter frequently checked in to see if we needed napkins, water refills, or new plates. Kudos to the staff! For my entrée, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. I was pleasantly surprised,it was much better than I expected. The buns were nicely toasted, and the sandwich was packed with pork that wasn't dry, offering a good balance of fatty and lean pieces. My only complaint: the sandwich came without BBQ sauce or any sauce at all, so it was a bit dry. I ended up using the ketchup from the fries to help. I've gone to Mason Jar a handful of times over the years, and it's a consistent option for good southern style food. The wings have been a personal favorite, smoky with plenty of flavor every time. And they have a great drink menu, with plenty of good beers on tap. The space itself feels like an upscale saloon, with lots of bar seating and nice wooden tables toward the front and in the back of the restaurant. I almost never write a review but I haven't had such a terrible experience in a long time! Once we were seated there was a terrible smell that made our party gag, we asked to be moved and there was no smell but my plate was dirty not once but twice! To their credit they were pleasant and accommodating with this but it was a bad start. The pulled pork egg rolls were really good but that was the only thing I enjoyed, I wasn't a fan of the deviled eggs or the buffalo chicken dip but I'll chalk those up to personal preference (thought the dip had way too much blue cheese and thought the eggs were bland) I had the brisket platter but I thought it was a bit overcooked and dry. Mac and cheese was really good. The main problem was the absolutely horrific food poisoning I got right after I left the restaurant, I barely walked 4 blocks before I needed to find a bathroom or a deserted corner. I haven't been that badly food poisoned since China. I absolutely destroyed the Whole Foods bathroom before I made it home. But for the price point, I don't think I would go here again. It was $35 for a brisket platter that I would have maybe comfortably paid $20-25 for. The service was great and the atmosphere was good too--they had a person singing live music which was lovely, albeit a little loud so it's maybe hard to have a conversation. Call me what you will but never been a fan of being able to see staff eat or break while on shift. We were running late so had to choose a closer restaurant for dinner. Mason Jar had American barbecue and here we are. What a surprise for us!! Back of the restaurant is where you'll find tables and booths with the waitresses. The menu is simple but covers all. I ordered the taco salad with brisket and both my son and husband had brisket sandwiches husband with fries son with tomato soup. Now in all my years and I have lived in many places but no where have I lived where they made brisket this delicious!!!! I don't eat it with any BBQ sauce but the men do. The meat was cooked to absolute perfection!!!!!!! Soft and tender yet moist and easy to cut. Fatty within being overly so. After dinner I went to the manager to make him aware of what kind of food he had. STUPENDOUS!!!!! I said if he ever decided to sell online I would be purchasing weekly. My school made a reservation for us to eat out all together (roughly 20-30) people. Once we arrived at 7:30, we were seated promptly but the business was under staffed for such a large group. They only had two waiters and one bartender for a busy evening with a known reservation. Like normal, people trickled in on different time schedules and they wanted to get everyone's food out at the same time (btw not very practical for a large group). So by the time food came out it was around 9:30 pm. Two hours of waiting for food to arrive when some of the guests had ordered around 8 pm while others ordered around 9. Because they were understaffed customer service was subpar. We barely saw anyone for food, more drinks, or anything. It was better to just go to the bar if you needed anything to be honest. It wasn't a great plan for an event. Now to the food- I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and mac n cheese for my sides. Everything was very tasty and seasoned well. The gravy that comes with the mashed potatoes was golden, and I wish mine came with more of it then a spoonful of it. I also ordered the MJ Lemonade without mint, and it was a refreshing drink for the evening. This place is also a well-known Gamecock Club where all of the alumni and students come to meet up whenever people are in town. My friend Maria had the crispy chicken sandwich and the chicken was very dry. The salad was mushy. The espresso martini was horrible and her maker's mark bourbon tasted anything but bourbon. I almost felt like I was in the south...in a bad way, like, I felt like a black man in the wrong neighborhood. Not that this is their intention in any way, it's just what I felt. Weird because it's smack dab in midtown Manhattan. Anyway, I pay and pick up my order. The pulled pork egg rolls were incredible. Not as crispy as I' hoped, but that pulled pork was seasoned and flavored very well! The bbq sauce was divine! Nice and sweet and tangy, and loaded with what I'm pretty sure were the seeds of cucumbers. They added a nice texture to the sauce. It was done right! It's funny because I also ordered the pulled pork eggs Benny, and the pulled pork that was served with it, didn't have as much flavor as the pulled pork in the egg rolls. Perhaps it was different. In town from Columbia, SC for the NY Giants game so wanted to find a place to watch the USC game. First time going here & was very impressed! Started with the bourbon maple wings/Alabama white sauce wings & both had great flavor. Highly recommend the pulled pork egg rolls & brisket - both had excellent smoke flavor & reminded me of BBQ from down South.
