First of all it wasn't an hour, it was 45 minutes but I paid for an hour. Second, Eric, the masseuse was hurting me and when I said it hurt he didn't stop and kept pressing harder. The massages themselves are generally good, but the timing issues are a recurring problem that I can't overlook. A 50-minute massage should mean 50 minutes on the table--not 40 to 45. Yesterday was yet another frustrating experience. My massage was scheduled for 5:00 PM, but I wasn't called back until 5:05. By the time I changed and the massage actually began, there were only 45 minutes left on the timer (she started the timer while I was changing). To make matters worse, the massage ended with six minutes still showing, and the therapist quickly flipped the iPad around--clearly cutting the session short. This isn't a one-time issue. I've brought it up in the past, and nothing has changed. When I mentioned it again to the receptionist, she just said she'd inform the manager. That response felt dismissive, and frankly, it's frustrating to pay full price and repeatedly get less than the full experience. Customers deserve the full time they're promised. First of all, I paid for a 60 minute massage, but it was only about 50 minutes. Other than the shortened length, the overall massage was fine, except the masseuse sometimes grabbed my neck and put too much pressure on my lower back, which hurt. She used her elbows on my back more than using actual technique, indicating lack of skill and experience. Then when I went to the front desk to pay, the front desk person told me that since this was my first time at massage envy, the massage was at the member rate of $95 instead of the regular non member rate of $155. I was confused by this price difference because it didn't say anything about a special first time rate when I booked the massage online. Then the person at the desk asked if I wanted to tip the masseuse at the full rate price of $155. I felt pressured to say yes. Most places direct you to a tablet to click on independently for tipping and it's not an awkward conversation with the front desk person. I thought that this was a tactic to try to get more money out of people. They also offer a 15 complimentary mini facial if it's your first time there, which I declined. Had a really relaxing 90 minute session with Lemareye. Immediately walking in, I was greeted and offered water. Super quick check in process on an iPad to go through your preferences for the session. Everyone was very professional and nice. The 90 minutes flew by and I left feeling so relaxed and rejuvenated. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Everything can be improved. The predatory membership hunting is off putting. The massage rooms are freezing. I've been to other Massage Envy locations, but this is the closest one so I joined the membership here on the recommendation of a friend. If you follow directions on Google Maps the location is a little hard to find (but if you use city common sense you'll be fine). There's nothing remarkable about this location, but that's okay. The front entry area is kind of small, but there's a separate relaxation lounge you can sit in once you've checked in (just keep the brightness on your phone low, it's a dark room)! I've had massages with both Gabby and Tiffany at this location and both were great. I like Tiffany a little bit better just in terms of personal preference for pressure and technique, but Gabby was good too. I like on the website when scheduling an appointment that you can indicate what type(s) of pressure you like (and it'll also show what pressure(s) each masseuse uses so you can schedule what works for you. This location has a deal where if you do a certain number of day appointments during the week you can get a free massage, which is nice if you can get away during the work day. I like the idea of the membership, though I've only had it for a couple of months. I have found it a bit hard to schedule appointments, they seem to book up pretty fast and pretty far out so I haven't been able to use the membership as much as I'd like (at least I don't lose the credits). I'll just have to plan farther ahead, which I'm learning. I do like that they can put you on a wait list though for last-minute appointments-I was able to score an appointment for this weekend that way. Overall, if you're looking for a true spa/relaxation experience, this won't be it. But if you're looking for a decent massage, this will probably do it. read more

The receptionist or personal who answered the phone commented in a sarcastic way that I was calling to late because they close at 7 PM. I explained to him that thier website amd google maps shows they are open until 9. I suggested that changing that to prevent future disappointments would be a good idea. Then an our before the massage they text me that the person giving the massage does not do hot stone massage. So I called to cancel. They told me too bad that they will be charging me anyway! They said the massage could still be done just not hot stone. I said I did not want a regular massage and that was not what was confirmed. They said tough. I thought I'd review by comparing Pause Streeterville to Massage Envy a block over on Ohio St. I had massages at both places within the past 2 months. Here is my review in terms of ambiance, price, and people: ~ambiance- neither place was up to par for me. I paid extra for aromatherapy and it was forgotten until 20 minutes in at ME and added-on upon entrance at Pause because I didn't think the room smelled good without the added purchase. ME had a lounge with low lighting and clam music which I couldn't really enjoy because the other customer in the room was on her phone despite the sign. This lounge is separate from the lobby where you pay. Pause is very bare-bones. One entrance with a counter where you pay and also wait, taking in the frenetic energy of downtown Chicago just outside the window. Bonus points for ME for that lounge. Bonus points for Pause for selling cute, original products and providing warm apple cider. ~price- both are quite pricey and every minute counts. I paid for a 60 minute massage at ME and was picked up from lounge at 3:16. The walk back to the room down a long corridor, consultation, and underdressing, took up another 10-15. TIme on the table in an actual massage was more like 45 minutes. I paid for I believe the same length at neighboring Pause then asked my therapist to add on more minutes (I know, that is probably not supposed to be done but luckily I got away with it). ~people- I am a straight female with a beautiful figure and above average looks. My therapist at ME was male so I felt slightly uncomfortable. However, innuendo is an occupational hazard when your line of work entails your patient undressing. My therapist at Pause was a female. I felt more comfortable with her. They had different techniques and I liked hers better. I am an English teacher so I listen to words people use - she used more language of a trained professional and gave me more commentary on what she was feeling in my muscles. I really liked that. She also targeted the areas I requested more than ME. My suggestions for both- provide employees with a uniform that smells extra good and is changed into union arrival. Assume someone buying a massage wants at least medium hard pressure. Don't include consultation with the price. Aromatherapy is more than just scented cream so burn some damn incense or light candles well in advance of appointment. Overall, I am more likely to return to Pause, but I have one more ME gift card to use. I plan on requesting a female therapist. read more

My first ME experience was in Arizona after getting a gift card, I loved my first massage there and I was happy to see that they had a reasonably affordable subscription as well. The nice thing about this company is that it has a lot of locations across the country so you can sneak in a massage on your monthly amount just about anywhere (and it's more enjoyable to get one when travelling). This location was a little hard to find right away but I got there and got in quickly, got the perfect massage that I needed for a generous time. So I was on vacation and over did it at the gym trying to work off the carbs I accumulated at the Taste of Chicago. Couple that with my 22k steps a day for the last 3 days and I was screaming for someone to rub my feet and body!! ME was across the street from our hotel and i called last minute for massages. It was a weekday so they were able to accommodate me and my sister in law for that afternoon. We came in and were immediately greeted with warm smiles and excellent customer service. Our therapists were professional, attentive and excellent. They even honored a free 30 min stretch session if I checked in via yelp. I had the stretch the next day and it was great! Yes, it's not a spa. But I don't need a sauna, steam, free products,etc. all I need is my back and feet rubbed the right way. I was a former ME member in California but I signed up again because this experience reminded me that we need regular self care. Plus you can't beat the membership deals. Got my girlfriend a massage here. The masseuse did not listen to her needs. She needed firm but she did less than light, basically rubbed lotion on her for an hour. She passed gas during the massage, coughed the entire time, and said "oh shit" under hear breath halfway through the massage. The masseuse should have called in sick. My girlfriend left crying I got a massage with her at the same time. Both of our massages lasted 49 minutes. Started late and ended early. read more

Not a good experience... on sadly two occasions. 1.The first time I went to get a massage here I was surprised by the lack of relaxing ambience. It felt cold and sterile like a doctors office. The massage was average at best, I personally prefer the $28 massages that you can get all over the city. Once the mediocre massage was over, I walk out to the girl at the front desk trying to sell me stuff. The last thing I want to be sold after a relaxing massage is a annual massage pass. 2. I go in to book an appointment today, all seems fine. I go back a couple hours later and I've been told my spot has been booked to someone else. They blamed a faulty system. I had an appointment booked for myself and husband at this location and let's just say I would not recommend and I would never frequent again. We paid for 2 one hour massages and only one of them was actually one hour. When I explained to the male after we had been serviced, who I believe is the manger, that I got a 45 min massage (not to mention there was no pressure at all during the massage) he told me that the masseuse has an iPad with a timer so Basically that's impossible. I then told him that I had not only watched the clock in the room, and the one on my phone, and asked him if those were also incorrect his reply was "possibly"...however the minutes still add up the same, 45 mins- he agreed. He proceeded to go to the back to double check with the masseuse who lied and said she brought me into the room at 12:03, it was her word against mine. The best he could offer was the intro price at the next appointment. HA like I would Ever come back to this location. I heard about Massage Envy through a friend. Needless to say as self proclaimed spa addict, I was leary however ive been increasingly frustrated at the level of service for the price at most Chicago area spas. The format of Massage Envy ensures that you treat yourself monthly at a reasonable price ~$60. So I signed up. The massage I received at the location where I signed up (Glen Ellyn) was sub-par but I credit that to the masseuse. The place itself was very clean, organized, and somewhat relaxing. Anyhoo, after a particularly tough workout, I went to the new Streeterville location for my first monthly massage. The waiting room leaves a bit to be desired but I was only there for 3 minutes. I was greeted warmly by my massage therapist, Stephanie, who gave me one of the best massages Ive had in quite awhile. Heavy pressure without being painful and she gave a great foot and face massage which were a treat. I was warned about this business and at the end they really showed their true colors. So everything was fine until I decided to cancel my subscription and not to my surprise when you call the corporate number from their website they direct you to contact the individual location you called and then you have to deal with incompetent staff at that particular location. But in any event, I called and cancelled my membership at the end of January and asked the woman who I spoke with if I will get a cancellation email confirming that the account is cancelled, she said "Yes". Of course I never got a cancellation email and I knew I had credit left for at least another session or two. So I go on with life until April comes around and I see another charge popped up on my bank statement. Called the location only to get the lame excuse that they had some confusion on their system and errors have been occurring today and also to find out that the 2 hour credits I have just expired 2 days ago because I had 60 days to use them after I cancelled my membership!!!! Excuse me! Why wasn't I told by anyone that my credits expire in 60 days??? Why didn't I get some sort of reminder or warning of the expiration of my credits??? A guy by the name Brian rudely said to me that I should have read my contract when I signed up to know that I have 60 days to use my credits and that now I am basically SOL !!! I want to make sure that everyone knows how rude of a customer service the Streeterville location has and also telling all my friends NOT to go there. read more

I initially reached out to cancel a massage appointment and monthly membership. I had to contact via email because I am out of the county and won't be back for awhile. I get an email back from Gabbi saying they canceled my appointment but wanted to know why I want to cancel my membership. I advised I am out of the country. I get no response. Waiting 2 days and no response so I wrote back requesting confirmation of membership cancellation. Still nothing. So I wrote again today and hoping management will get back to me promptly to confirm membership cancellation. It's ridiculous on how hard it is to cancel and why I even have to give a reason to cancel. Just cancel like I asked and confirm you did it. Reading from other reviews I see that management is a problem here. I do not recommend here at all. If they charge me again for the monthly membership and I don't get a response soon I will definitely be filing a formal complaint with BBB and state consumer affairs. read more

I had a credit transferred from a family member, which we do a couple of times a year. the agent informed me that the credit was not on my account, despite having called our home location weeks before to transfer it. the manager, gabby, then informed me that there was "nothing she could do" and that it wasn't the fault of her location. this is understandable, but she could've offered helpful solutions. she told me I would be charged today and could "call back to get a refund after my credit transferred". not once was I informed that I could call and have the credit immediately transferred now, which is what I did. now I will need to go back to the store or call them to have the total removed from my card. the staff was not kind or helpful with the situation. I do not typically have issues with massage envy, however Gabby's lack of customer service makes me question returning to this location. read more

I canceled my membership 4 years ago bcs I had to have 2 spinal fusions due to a horrible car accident and canceled my membership. However shame on me for not recognizing this earlier but it's been a long road to recovery for me. They are absolutely unresponsive regarding a refund despite the fact I haven't been there in 4 years. Do NOT sign up for a membership. My therapist was extremely knowledgeable, listened when some parts were too firm, gave recommendations on various stretches to help with soreness, and was generally very sweet. Massage Envy was able to make a same-day appointment for me right after work. The location (or really, the chain in general) doesn't have the day spa feeling that I typically look for when booking a massage, but it was fine because this massage was more about lower back pain relief for me. Curtis was excellent for a firm pressure massage. I especially appreciated that he asked and seemed to really listen to what I was looking for. Knowing that I was having lower back tightness, he actually stopped before working on arms/shoulders and asked if I would prefer to use that time to go over my problem areas again - heck yes! I don't love the sales pitch at the end of the service for their membership (had so say no four times - I counted!), but that's something I've come to expect at any location in the chain. read more

Terrible massage!! I was tense before the massage but now I am left with shooting pains through my left shoulder blade. The girl at the front desk suggested I didn't understand my own massage needs and that my masseuse used a "pressure point" technique. Actually, he jammed my muscles against my bones and it was very unpleasant the entire time. I enjoyed maybe 5 mins of a 90 min massage and even left 15 min early it was so awful. I am both a frequent traveler and a message envy loyalist. While this clinic has good services overall, watch out for the "market adjustment" fee. I've been to several other Massage Envy clinics in the downtown area and none are charging this ridiculous fee. I guess this clinic doesn't have very many home members and gets mostly out of town visitors to find this necessary... The staff has always been extremely professional and polite to me. The therapists I have seen here are all effective and good at addressing the issues I walk in with. Usually travel related neck and back pain after endless weeks of travel. The locations is very convenient to where I usually stay, so when I am really in need, I find it worthwhile to suck it up and pay the fee since an uber/lyft to another clinic would be about as much (but it still prevents me from going as often as I otherwise would). Overall a very solid message envy clinic compared to the dozens of others I have visited... but extra fees prevent me from giving 5 stars read more

I experienced an encounter with a massage therapist that I have taken to corporate. This review is solely based on my encounter with the front desk staff. On first arriving I noticed multiple signs prompting about memberships. I had felt discomfort in my trap area and needed a quick massage and this place was the closest. I had a traumatic experience in the room during the massage. But what led after was infuriating. I am super aware of my surroundings. I walked up to pay for my massage. I just wanted to get out of there. But then came a 1 minute spiel of how I needed to join. I kindly said no but she kept pushing. The man sitting next to her who I assume was the manager was pacing around and eyeing me like a hawk. He even went to the extent of knocking on the door of the bathroom to get my massage therapist out. At this point It was me in front of 3 people staring at me to join this membership. I felt so uncomfortable and vulnerable. I understand you need to make money and keep your business thriving but the whole experience wasn't even worth a dime. Please stay away from this location. The reason for my 3 stars has nothing to do with my massage, I would like to say my massage from Ronald was WONDERFUL- if you like a deep massage he is your guy. I left my appointment and signed up for the monthly membership, however, I recently had to cancel my membership. When I first signed up I was told it would be no issue to freeze or cancel. I initially called and spoke to a woman named Yesenia who was extremely rude first of all, and unhelpful when I inquired about cancelling my membership. She first told me I can't cancel in the first three months which i found odd because that is not what I was told when I signed up. After explaining that she (with attitude) told me I would have to speak to a regional manager or something and that they would call me back that day. I never got a call. A few days later I called and spoke to a woman named Gabby, what a difference! She was so polite and answered my question and solved my issue immediately. Thanks Gabby. Whoever is management should check in with Yesenia and inquire about her attitude as she is not acting as a great ambassador for Massage Envy as a company. read more

Pretty dissapointed. I got a last minute appointment which is great but I guess that says something too.... The front desk was quite nice. My therapist on the other hand seemed like either she hated her job or just didnt want to be there, or even both. She wants rude but not as friendly as she should be. She asked how i wanted my pressure and I said hard. and what did i get? barely touched. She barely dug into my body. Yes it was relaxing but not what I wanted. My boyfriend gives me better massages (sorry envy) Then in the room there is a sign that reads "how much should you tip?" and it give you "suggestions" on how much to tip. A little unprofessional. I felt awkward. Most places when you ask them how such you should tip they say "it is up to you" this was just odd. So after all of this I go up with the person I was with (they were paying) and they asked if you wanted to pay cash for the tips or on the credit card. They decided to put it on the card and they asked how much. Since our massages were $50 each, 20% is $10. Makes sense. So she says "$10" and the lady behind the counter (a different woman then before) give her an odd look. and my friend says "what?" the lady then proceeds to tell her how she should tip. "well you are getting a $100 massage for the price of $50 so you should tip $20." excuse me, im getting a massage for FIFTY, so why the hell should we tip for $100. If you wanted a $20 tip you should have charged us 100. its funny. on their window they have a YELP sticker saying they get great reviews....you guys might want to take that down :) read more

By the morning after my massage here, I had three new bruises on my body. Not cool. This is not what a deep tissue massage means. I think I already expected no frills and no pampering at this place. What I didn't expect was the super aggressive $ solicitations. As I was getting ready for my massage, the place for my stuff was a table with a sign giving suggestions on how much tip to give you masseuse. The thing hasn't even started! Mom and I came on the first-time-customer promo. The price is good for this, $50 for an hour, but the thing is anything after will be crazy expensive (almost twice as much) unless you get a membership -- pay a rate, get a certain number of massages a month at a reduced price. They offered this to me and my mom after our massage -- mom declined, she's from out of town. When I declined, they were very aggressive, asking me why I didn't want to join and giving me their sales talk. It was so awkward. How do you say "It's because you give BAD massages!"? It's like they wouldn't take no for an answer. If you're looking for a reasonably priced massage, I would recommend one of the student massages at Cortiva over this place.
