This place is hit or miss, mainly due to getting a time slot . Hardest thing is signing up and then trying to get a session when you want it. All the spots seem to get booked up well in advance so make sure you book upfront. The therapists are friendly and the setting nice, however I think some therapists are much better than others. Everyone knows about the sales pitch for memberships immediately after the massage. That's lousy, but not a deal breaker. I scheduled a couples massage with my gf and booked two female masseuses. However, we got one male/one female masseuse. The male said "Somebody should have called you"...of course, this never happened. The explanation from the guy at the front desk was "Sorry, I'm new here and I thought Michael was Michelle." Evidently, more seasoning at the front desk is needed to effectively determine gender. Still, that didn't completely ruin the experience. I took the massage from the male masseuse & it was easily the wrost massage I've ever had. This had nothing to do with his gender or even the pressure he used. His movements/techniques were just bizarre - lots of poking, pulling, and strange shaking motions. Anyway, moral of the story is that this place features bad sales pitches, a front desk that isn't capable of booking the correct gender of masseuses, and poor massages. The only way it's worth checking out is if you find a good masseuse that works there (not easy) and want to purchase a membership (prices without memberships aren't close to worth it). read more

After reading some of the negative reviews posted on this site, I decided to join Yelp and post a positive review of Massage Envy. I work downtown so I was excited when Massage Envy arrived. A couple of weeks after they opened, I decided to see if I could get a massage during my lunch break. The introductory rate for my first massage was $49, so I thought I would give the place a shot. The front desk associates were friendly and not too pushy with the memberships. They were able to place me with a massage therapist within 15 minutes. I don't know if the other reviewers on this site just had a bad therapist, but I had a wonderful experience with mine. I've had a few massages in the past of varying degrees of quality, so I know what I like in a massage. My therapist was a polite young man named Brandon who was able to adjust his massage style to meet my expectations. He is great finding all my knots and has been helping me with a few of my muscles that have been bothering me. He even has taught me some stretches that I can do on my own that help me when I'm not on the massage table. After my first massage I decided to get a membership since I've always wanted to get monthly massages. I have been able to schedule an appointment with Brandon every time since and each experience has been great. I usually go every two weeks if I have time. Massage Envy itself is somewhat plain but the lobby and rooms are always clean and comfortable. I would rather get an inexpensive massage of equal quality at Massage Envy than go to an expensive spa where the only extras I get are a fluffy robe and an air of pretension . read more

Well since their staff can't book an appointment on the appropriate day, I'm not able to review the massage therapist. M I will say I woke up at 715 for an 8am appointment that was actually not for Wednesday it was actually for Thursday. Appointment booked on Tuesday. I will say that the staff at the desk this morning was very trying to be helpful, they earned that second star. I have'nt been to this location,just the one on Diversey & Halsted.I called to make an appt.after I received a gift card for Xmas.I get there the day of the appt and they have no record of me.The young lady I made the appt with never asked me for my name,(which I didnt realize till I got off the phone).Needless to say they had no one available to take me at that time so I had to comeback 2 days later for my 2pm swedish massage.When I go back for my massage the receptionist tells me they have me down for 3pm,I said "are you sure,theres no way i would've scheduled it for 3". She proceeds to tell me thats the only time we have u down for.She apologizes profusely even though it isnt her fault.I leave to do some grocery shopping then come back @ 3.The massage was lovely and I may even go back for another. read more

I'm not a member here. I am a member in a different state and these folks were incredible. Front desk was accommodating and very friendly. We got a free upgrade, foot scrub, and it was excellent. I have been a member of ME for several years and been to spas all over the country. Your massage is always only as good as your masseuse/therapist and finding one that is right for you is a pretty subjective and individual process in my experience. What does set one spa/clinic apart from another is the front desk staff. Most MEs are poorly run and have a revolving door of employees. This one is the exception - they are great! Always friendly and knowledgable and they get my billing correct and are helpful when booking appointments. read more

I've been a member here on and off since this location opened, and there have definitely been ups and downs. The expansion of the space was generally a good thing. The facility is clean, but definitely not super high end. It is what it claims to be - affordable massage therapy! Most of the therapists I've had are good. Some have been terrible. Few are great. It's just like finding a doctor or hairstylist - try a few until you find one you like. Tiffany is that for me. She really helps me open up my back and pecks, focusing on stretches just as much as massage. That combination works well for me, but might not for everyone. In general, I'm happy with the facility, the price, the location, and how I feel afterward, and will continue to patron this Massage Envy. read more

BUT, the customer service has been great and rectify any issues I have had including comping an entire massage for small complaints. I'm surprised by many of the reviews here. If you have experience with massage therapy in Chicago, you know that the going rate really is in the $100 range and only places labeled as "spas" have additional facilities such as showers, steam rooms, etc. I've enjoyed several massages here from different therapists. One was so good I'm not going to mention her name, because it's hard enough to find a spot in her schedule as it is! But even the fine-but-not-fabulous therapist gave a worthwhile massage. I've had enough experience with therapists elsewhere who were well trained and experienced and yet were no better than the therapists here, and every single one of them cost more than the Massage Envy price PLUS 20% tip. I suspected what another reviewer has reported, that the Massage Envy therapists are receiving less from the company than most therapists do. That just makes me want to give them a few more dollars; after all, even 25% gratuity plus the introductory or member rate is still less than the going rate in Chicago. The massage tables are top of the line: they have a hydraulic lift so the therapist can adjust the height quickly and quietly, heating pads, well-constructed face cradles, fitted covers for everything (excellent for hygiene purposes), and they're the full (wide) size rather than the cheaper and narrower version that many places have. They could make it easier to deal with clothing: it seems that only some of the rooms have a hook and hanger available. It's very quiet and dim, so once you're in your particular room you don't have any sense that you're next to other occupied rooms. This place is for people who know they want to have regular monthly massages but also like to have the flexibility to be able to call up on a particular day and say "I need this worked on now: who do you have available?" read more

I recently moved to Chicago and a Co-worker recommended Massage Envy on Ohio St. I called in the AM and was able to have an appointment that evening with a very nice young woman, Chely. When I walked in I noticed it's a clean and friendly environment. The prices are reasonable and I was able to add aromatherapy to my massage. They had me fill out paper work and was promptly greeted by Chely. She took me to her room, which was nice and clean, and we talked about my problem areas. Chely has great, hard, even pressure and didn't talk except to ask if her pressure was okay. Once she was done she left the room so I could get dressed and came back with water. She made the aromatherapy lotion in a little bottle for my massage, which I was able to take home. Also she gave me some good tips on how to help my problem areas. We visited Chicago for a girls/sisters weekend and needed something to do other than shopping before we flew out. We decided to each get a massage. They were very accommodating and got two of us in at 9 and two of us in at 10 which was great considering we decided at 8:30 the night before. My massage was probably one of the better ones I have gotten before. There were only a couple reasons I gave it four stars. One was the lobby area was not very large. She was helpful and patient considering I had to call her 3 times before I could book an appointment (had to coordinate with my boyfriend). When I arrived, she was just as professional, helpful and courteous in person. David did my massage and he was excellent. i've received the best massages at this place. They're the only thing that would make me let go of my precious Shiatsu at home massage machine. i had been to Cortiva once and it was utterly disappointing. i couldn't feel any pressure, i got no relief. At Massage Envy, i requested the deep pressure massage which i went to weekly in the evenings. My, oh my.... i had J.R. who is fAAaaaaAAAaaabulous !!!! i constantly suffer from pain in the neck and lower back and he is great at listening to you to find out which area is the most painful, and providing you as much relief as possible. Believe me: if he succeeded with me, you WILL be happy. But i am talking about deep pressure only. He also taught me how to stretch my back more efficiently. The atmosphere is very relaxed (duh) but i mean reaaaaally relaxed, you watch and listen to ocean waves on the big screen while waiting for your therapist. Massage was okay. I asked for firm pressure, but didn't get anything close. I was also turned off by the multiple solicitations for tip money. I tipped 20% of the $49 I paid, so $10. I was taught that 10% if it is poor service, 15% if it was satisfactory, and 20% for outstanding service. I thought the service was poor, but somehow I still felt cheap tipping 20% with all those damn signs. They try to make the place look fancy, but the signs just make it ghetto. Otherwise, it smelled nice, rooms were comfy, maybe a little on the warm side. Strangely, the toilet seat was slanted, something I had never experienced before. Felt like trying to dump while on the side of a mountain. Oh, well, nice to try, but I am going back to my old place, even if it is $60 per hour. read more

I went into this Massage Envy in Streeterville last week to use the GROUPON I purchased last year. It was easily the best 90 minute massage I've had in a really long time... and I usually get at least 1 or 2 a month. The therapist was spot on with her technique, and was able to work on the problem area I told her about at the start of my session. The overall experience was beyond what I expected, the staff was friendly and they even had a VIP lounge I was able to wait in before my session. So here's the part I'm most surprised at though... I normally don't join membership programs like gyms but this was impossible to resist! I signed up for their plan and I cannot wait to get my next massage!!!! :-) read more

Happy with the massage but not its marketing technique. One would expect an hour massage session gives you 60 minutes of massage. The ad says "1-hour Essential therapeutic relief," "1 1/2-hour Complete therapeutic relief." Never mentioned (well, until you bought it, or in smallest font hidden deep down somewhere in the leaflet) it would be cut down by 10 minutes for consultation and redressing? I never knew that I need to pay for redressing myself after having a massage. Not that that 10 minutes or the money is substantial, if you tell people that it is a 50 minutes massage that comes with extra 10 minutes for consultation and redressing, It would be considered bonus time that makes the experience better. If you sell people these 1 hour or 1.5 hour massage session, and disappear for 10 minutes, it is called robbing. read more

I think the description, the "Starbucks" of the massage world is a little too nice. I really enjoyed the price, but as far as the massage it was at the very best ok. I asked three times for a deep tissue massage and told her as many times she could go deeper. She continued on with what I guess is the standard head to toe Swedish massage, not to hard not to soft. If I was being charged a normal rate (I only paid the introductory price) I probably would not have wanted to pay. I really like a good massage and don't mind paying for it, I went to Massage Envy in the hope of a good massage are a great price, I was disappointed. I think if you are not really picky about your massages and just like to be rubbed this might be the place for you. I think they get their people straight out of massage school so you'd probably do just as well going to the CSMT or another local massage school as the quality is similar and the price is lower. My husband reserved a 2 hour massage for me as a birthday gift and after an hour, I wanted to leave. The room I was in was FREEZING COLD and half of my massage was done in silence. The music stopped and no one bothered to turn it back on. I asked my masseuse if she could turn the heat up but she turned the heat on my table up. So my stomach was on fire while my back was freezing. I also think it's pretty tacky to put a sign up explaining how much you should tip. When I asked about that, they said that it's because customers often ask what is appropriate. I think that if they ask, then you should tell them, not post a sign in every nook and cranny about how much to tip. The front desk staff was very nice and even offered to pay my meter while I was getting my massage. Other than that, it wasn't a massage to write home about. I continue to be unimpressed. Was a membership client a couple years ago but cancelled due to lack of time. I have gone back for solo massages here and there and find them to be extremely overprices and the massages are underwhelming. Had an appointment Friday where I rearranged my schedule, then 1hour before received a call that it was cancelled. I was nice about it but this is super irritating given that if I had to cancel, I would have lost my credit. Regardless, I rescheduled for that evening and left feeling like I received no massage at all. It was an hour of push and hold maneuvers and didn't hit any trigger points. My iliac crests were sore from constant pressure in the same spots. My last handful of massages have been disappointing. The staff are friendly the facilities are nice, but the massages are lack-luster especially for the price. I will not be returning. read more

I came to this location for my birthday. I scheduled a one hour massage and one hour facial. I got there, filled out my paper work and was brought back to the "relaxation room" (a dark room with a fake picture of a fireplace) I had my one hour swedish massage with Patricia. Honestly, I couldn't wait for it to be over. She was way to rough. I felt like I was getting body slammed into the table. She asked if I like the pressure, told her no I like light pressure but nothing changed. She also moved the table up and down about 15 times in the course of the hour - not relaxing at all!! I left that massage feeling beat up and un-relaxed. The walls are also paper thin. You can hear anyone walk down the hall and you can hear conversations from the rooms beside you. Front desk staff is also very unprofessional. I could not wait until this experience was over. read more

I received a free 30 minute massage voucher in the mail yesterday. I am new to Chicago and thought it would be a great place to check out. I have never had a massage before but I've had other relaxation spa treatments. When calling, I talked to Jillian who asked if I wanted to upgrade to a 60 or 90 minute massage. I declined, as it is my first massage I wanted to see what it was like before doing a longer one. I was then given another excuse, "the 30 minute massage actually translates to a 20 minute massage." Ok, misleading, but that's fine. I was put on hold several times throughout this conversation and then Laura picks up the phone like I had never talked to Jillian and starts over again. Ok, so I gave her all of the same information and she also proceeded to put me on hold. I was now on the phone (mostly holding) for over 10 minutes when she finally picked back up and suggested a time next Monday. Sure, great. When she found out I only wanted a 30min one, she said that wouldn't work and put me on hold again. This is getting a little ridiculous, this is my fourth time holding. She clearly didn't want me scheduling a 30 minute massage with this voucher. Finally she suggested another date next week and I agreed. She then proceeded to ask for my credit card number. I have a voucher therefore the only payment I will be providing is gratuity, so why exactly is a credit card required? She had no explanation but simply "that's our policy" I had been on the phone for 18 minutes and clearly got the hint they didn't want me to schedule if I wasn't going to pay. Their professionalism was clearly lacking. If you don't want me to schedule, don't send me the voucher. At least let me come in and have the massage and then hound me to buy something. There was absolutely no way I was giving these people my credit card number. At this point, I didn't even want a massage at a place like this. There are many other options here in Chicago and I refuse to waste my time being treated like this. read more

They auto billed me for a massage, then when I went to use it, they claimed that it "expired" (3 months later) and kept my money, while refusing to deliver the massage they charged for (Sergio, manager). I SO regret having a membership. Terrible customer service. it is always difficult to find appointments, and even when you schedule weeks in advanced, they cancel on you (this happened more than once, and they are not even apologetic when they cancel your scheduled appointment). Some of the front desk staff are nice, but some are very rude (including management) . They switched therapists on me a few times after I made the appointment. If you are thinking about a membership, I would think twice. You will have a bunch of hours that you can't use (because they never have appointments) and feel trapped because if you cancelled you will have to use all of your hours within 60 days or you lose them. I went in a little over a month ago to receive a massage and facial. My massage with Manuel was fine; however, my facial with Jeanette was another story. I broke out on my forehead badly. I called to speak with Jeanette in which she stated with the treatment I received it happens to "everyone" since I received a strong treatment for my face. I told her I was nervous due to the bad breakout on my forehead and asked if she can further look at the issue and she stated she would not; the only way she would is if I book another appointment and receive another facial. She will not do a consultation. She also stated I should have used "their products" and should have followed a "home regimen" (in which I have and I have not broken out as bad as I did). I am glad I did not purchase any products due to my breakout. I am unhappy with the way this situation was handled, the facial was not good (in fact, she kept wiping off my face about 8 times for 20 minutes while this could have been done more seamlessly had I just used my makeup wipes in my purse) and I will not only cancel my subscription, but schedule a dermatology appointment with someone else. read more

Awful experience this morning. The sole purpose of waking up early was for an 8:30 massage that was booked. It was scheduled for 8 am, they called me and said they needed to do 8:30 then I walk in today and they tell me the person booked the wrong date. The response I got was "well it looks like we booked the wrong day I dont know what else to tell you" You would think after 4+ years they would say "we are very sorry and the next time you come in we will add a half hour" but it was an "O well" approach. I've been a customer off and on for a period of 4 years. I was lucky enough to have the best massage therapist in Chicago over that time period. I was never thrilled with the front desk due to their overall snootiness but my therapist was so good it didn't matter. Unfortunately, my therapist left the company and I was referred to a different therapist. Let me just say my back still hurts from that massage from 6 weeks ago! She literally dug her elbows into the small of my back to the point of me screaming out with pain. I then cancelled my membership a couple of weeks later. This is where I need to warn you all. I still had 2 1/2 hours of credit on my account and tried to call to make a booking to make use of them. However, I was abruptly told my account had been deactivated. The front desk then said that someone must have tried to call me. They didn't. She then said someone would call me the next day. Nothing. I tried calling back and was put on hold for 15 minutes before I hung up. Bottom line, they're scammers. By skimming customers this way they are able to remain profitable. If you plan on "exiting the building", use all your credits first. Then again, when I did that a couple of years ago and cancelled they found a way to charge me for an additional month. Buyer beware. They lure you in but then they spit you out. I will not be back for more! I'm hoping this behavior will eventually catch up with them. read more
