I was forced to pay a "market adjustment" because evidently the monthly membership in Chicago was significantly more than the Fee I already pay in Atlanta. I experienced debilitating back spasms for three months and a hemiplegic migraine episode that landed me in the emergency room back in October. I had to go through three months of physical therapy (2-3x a week) just to be able to move freely again. After finishing physical therapy, I was desperate not to regress (because not being able to look down at your cutting board while chopping vegetables or your notes at work without searing pain is seriously awful), so I began looking for a place to get a massage regularly in addition to doing the exercises that helped rehab my neck and back. Initially, I was reluctant to try Massage Envy because I had read a lot of mixed reviews about the services and complaints about billing practices and upselling tactics. I'm so happy I bit the bullet and just came in for an initial session because the membership and service this locations offers have been a total godsend for my neck and back pain. Like with any place, it requires a bit of trial and error to find the right therapist, but it's been well worth the money in my opinion. Make no mistake, it's not a luxury/froufrou spa but it's clean, relaxing and provides outstanding services for reasonable prices. I'm very happy with my membership and would recommend it to anyone who works a desk job or travels a lot, or anyone in need of massage therapy on a regular basis. read more

I've been going to this Massage Envy for a little over a year and overall I've been pretty pleased with the services I've received. Everyone here is professional and pleasant. Massage Envy is like the Walmart of massage places and hires therapists out of massage school, so you shouldn't expect the best massage you've ever had right off the bat. This particular Massage Envy has been around a while now and has therapists that have been there for a few years, and those therapists are very good. In particular, I've gotten fantastic massages from Robin and Roberto, along with some other therapists who have now left. My advice is to ask the front desk who is good at the particular therapy you need, try a few people, and stick with the ones you like best. Also make sure to try and communicate exactly what you want. I know I've had some therapists who I'm sure do great massage, but I was not clear as to what I needed, and so didn't get the best results from my massage. With Massage Envy, you usually sign a contract to pay $59/month for a membership, and with that membership you get a one hour massage, with the option to have more massages at the rate of $49/hour, so it's a good deal. Having such low prices means that therapists here are not making as much as therapists at regular day spas - they start at $15 per hour massage, as opposed to starting at $25 per hour massage. And they only get paid for the massages they do. Massage therapists cannot work eight solid hours like the rest of us; massage is difficult and grueling work. So many do about four to five massages per day, if they are lucky. Many people here are complaining about the signs suggesting proper gratuity levels. I think that's BS. Those signs are essential to these people getting paid properly. They are doing massages for half the price of a regular massage. Why should they get paid half the tip? You are saving money by getting a massage here. I don't have any clue as to why you would skimp on the tip. This should be the same type of guideline as tipping at a restaurant when you have a coupon - you should always tip on the full bill before any discounts. And you should always tip at least the suggested amount here. Making excuses as to why you tip less...well, sorry, it's not cool. Knowing what I know now about the way Massage Envy operates and pays its employees, I would not have signed a contract to get massages here. But having done so and coming to the end of my contract, I have to say I have been satisfied with the services I've received here. read more

Due to my high stress levels lately, my fiance got me a 3-month gift membership. This review is only for this specific Massage Envy. I went to other ones and had MUCH better experiences. The staff was somewhat snotty. My masseuse was sucking on a hard candy during the massage and I could hear her crunching, it was gross. The massage wasn't very relaxing. She worked a lot on my neck, which is very tight, but I asked for an overall relaxing massage, not work on my neck. The suggested tip price is $20 here, at the ones in the suburbs it's $16, plus it's a little weird to have the suggested tip price in multiple locations throughout the store. read more

I really like the fact that Massage Envys will usually take me if I make a day-of appointment. I'm a member, so I don't know if that makes a difference, but if I have a rough day, I need a massage THAT NIGHT and massage envy usually delivers. It was walking distance from my hotel, and I managed to snag an 8PM appointment. Perfect. I go, and they usher me right in, no filling anything out or anything. [I find out later that they thought I was someone else, and even gave a wrong chart to my massage therapist, which resulted in a funny little mix up.] My therapist was Cynthia, and she was pretty awesome. I've gotten a TON of massages, and she did a few things that I've never had done before and they felt pretty good. It was exactly what I needed. I always wonder what good therapists are doing at Massage Envy, since I have a vague inkling that they are seriously underpaid compared to other spas. My only issues were that she was pretty talkative, and at first I responded out of habit and politeness, but eventually just zoned out. I really don't like it when therapists talk but I find the awkwardness of being blunt and telling them not to talk more uncomfortable than just dealing with it. The thing that really surprised me was that she asked me how I got my scars, which i found to be shockingly rude and made me feel pretty uncomfortable. Even when I go to those ghetto Asian places and they don't know I speak chinese and talk about me behind my back, no one brings it up. Maybe people are just more open here. Also, I think they read the reviews here because when she walked in, she announced the start time and end time out loud, which is pretty cool because I've gotten robbed of several minutes at other locations a few times. The room was also super warm and the bed was REALLY warm so I think they fixed the cold room problem. I tipped her $21. I literally cannot believe people writing that they feel it's okay to tip $10 - I hope it's because they don't know any better and not because they're ignorant. [uh oh, I feel the rant starting...] If you just used your brain for one second and think about what's going on here - you're getting a dirt cheap massage. The company keeps a lot of the money, and the therapist is making barely anything. Then you are adding further insult to injury by leaving them coffee money instead of a real tip. For someone to say "if you want me to tip $20, charge me $100" is idiotic. Really, is that what they have to do, charge you more money, for you to give a fair tip to your masseuse? Every time I go, I always overhear someone leaving like an $11 tip or a $10 tip and acting like they're all generous and I always want to just smack them. A lot of the people here do just as good a job, if not better, than the masseuses at other spas and tip should service. Tipping based on price is just a starting point. I went in an agreed to the 1 year package. My therapist was Bridget and she was GREAT. A++ She was the only reason I committed to a membership and the only reason I continued to go back. After 11 months of going to every appointment and being on time, I ran into a work issue. I called at 8:30 to reschedule my 2:30 appointment and was told I couldn't reschedule on the day of and that I would still be charged anyways. Needless to say this made me irate. First off, the therapists there are good and friendship and that's the 1-star is for. The front desk staff, on the other hand, are horrible! I had extra credits from my annual membership, so I wanted to transfer one credit to my husband. That was the second time I wanted to do that. I made the appointment successfully on the phone and they told me that the credit has been transferred. I also scheduled my own session on the same day as my husband, just 2 hours ahead of him. When I showed up for my appointment, the staff member told me that I could not transfer the credit for my husband's session because I could only transfer credit to the same person every 6 months. I already transferred one previously to my husband within the 6 months period. I said: I didn't know this rule and when I booked the appointment, the person I booked with did not let me know. And the appointment was made successfully. The staff member said: Yes, whoever booked that should have let you know. I said: well, can you make an exception for just this time then since I was not notified? He said: No, we really can't! I thought it was so rude of him and unreasonable to make me pay for their mistake. My husband ended up have to pay full price for his session which is $99. Just to clarify that it wasn't the money that made me upset, but the way they handled my case and made me, the customer, paid for mistake that made by them was poor customer service. With a place that I supposed to go in and relaxed, this really defeated the purpose and I really had a hard time letting it go. So I've decided to cancel my annual membership when the term is up and be vocal about this experience whenever possible for a very long time! I'm really confused by other people's reviews. This is a membership-based clinic, NOT a spa, and they're really not trying to fool you. They do not call themselves a spa and their atmosphere is clinical. They let you know that you're coming in at a "member rate." If you go into a gym at an introductory rate, you expect them to try to sign you up for their program. There's really no difference. As for the massage therapists, I wouldn't call it "hit-and-miss." Not every therapist is a good match for every client, so you do have to find one that works for you and stick with them. That's normal. I read a marketing article recently that said that traditional "spas" take many factors into account when hiring, aside from the talent of the therapist. The biggest one is appearance. They want to hire hot therapists and estheticians because they think that makes the experience better. Maybe for some people it does. It's weird that people think they only got a massage worth $50, because if Massage Envy didn't exist there would not BE any massages in Chicago in that price range (regardless of the quality of the therapist). So you'd tip on the full amount if they charged the full amount, but not when they give you a discount? You can't explain away your stinginess, folks, and people like you are the reason they have those tip signs posted everywhere. Just tip the therapist $15-20, depending on quality of service, and stop whining. I'm a waitress and Chicagoans tip low for food service too, especially people with Groupons. God, we hate those Groupons. Seriously, Chicagoans are so stingy. Must be a midwest thing. read more

Horrible!! Horrible! Horrible!! I've tried it more than 5 times (i was a member). All they care about is money & not the customer service they provide. My friend gifted me a 1 hour massage ( gift card saying 1 hour massage) & when I went to get it they said I need to pay extra 40$ which is the difference between the member rate & the non member rate since I wasn't a member !!! I told yhrm its a gift card saying 1 hour massage which is already paid for, what difference does it make if im a member or not?????!!!! The most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. And today I went to get another 1 hour massage since my neck & shoulder were really tight. I added the foot scrub & the lady at the front desk said it's 15$ extra & I had no problem with that. Once in the room my therapist asked what I was looking for today & I told her "back,shoulders & neck mainly" and she added " otherwise it's a total body" & I said yes. Of course she also said I'm getting a foot scrub at the end. I thought it would be at the end of my massage. Which made sense. She worked on my body, foot scrub & decided to SKIP the NECK. And when I asked her why she said there is no time!!!!!!!!! She took the liberty to decide for me what is the least important part in my body that is best to skip without even asking me. None of the employees there said that you getting a foot scrub, which you're paying extra 15$ for, is going make your massage session shorter or that the therapist will not be able to do total body. They keep their customers in the dark on purpose. Bad bad bad customer service. Hopefully will convince my member friend to go find another place to spend her money at rather than wasting it there. read more

The problem is I'm in more pain today then when I arrived at Massage Envy yesterday!! The main reason for the 2 star review is this: My appointment was for 6:30. I arrived at 6:15, as requested, to fill out paperwork. I was seated in the waiting room by 6:20. I was called back by my masseuse at 6:35, the actual massage began around 6:45. My 'hour' massage was over at 7:25. That is NOT an hour. I paid A LOT of money for an hour massage and didn't even get an hour massage. read more

Mediocre in every way possible. Came here over the summer because I was lured in by the $49 deal. This is a no frills massage. You walk in, fill out the basic paperwork, wait. Go to the room, undress, get oiled up and massage, get dressed and leave. Notice, there is no where to rinse off because they don't have showers, just a bathroom. The massage was lighter than I would have liked, easily one I could have gotten from a friend. When all is said and done, only the first massage is a deal (and that's if you luck out and get somebody good), after that, it's $$$ and I would rather pay elsewhere so that I could get the full spa experience. read more

I had been a member of Massage Envy for over 2 years when this happened to me. And until then would have given it 4 stars but now it will be a very long time before I get a massage again. And while I appreciate the efforts that are taken by the owners when hiring massage therapists, the fact of the matter is this massage therapist had a criminal record and they took a gamble on him and they lost. He not only assaulted me on their property during a massage which is supposed to be a safe place, but when he finished, he offered me personal massages in my home and gave me his personal phone number on a Massage Envy card. So something in their efforts failed, they missed a red flag somewhere and I am the one paying the price for it now. read more

Was a member for almost three years and thanks to the TERRIBLE customer service I received two Friday's ago I finally opened my eyes and canceled my membership. Word to the wise you shouldn't hang up on people because you have the manners of 5 year old. Therapists are always hit or miss here. If you get lucky and get one of the rare therapists with experience you might walk out feeling your money was well spent but that is few and far between. This was pretty much my first massage therapy experience, EVER, so I ain't gonna lie, I was a little bit nervous. However, everyone at Massage Envy, from the girl at the front desk who scheduled my appointment to the massage therapist that worked on me, was fantastic and really made me feel comfortable. Granted, I have no basis for comparison in terms of the quality of the massage, but I will say that as a student who spends a good amount of time studying and who has accumulated pretty bad back problems, I felt much much better after my session. My roommate is already a member and I am seriously considering joining as well. For $59/month, and considering how convenient the location is for me, it seems really worthwhile. There is a 12 month minimum committment for these memberships, and a 6-month one as well (which includes a $29 start-up fee). I had to literally drag myself out of the place before agreeing to join right then and there! read more

called in the morning and got an evening appt. have had lots of massages and this was average for even the $49 pricetag. nothing fancy, music was distracting, no pampering, but a good hour long massage for cheap. this is probably best utilized for your basic swedish massage. they politely asked me if i was interested in their monthly package but no hard sell. considering that they mandate a $20 tip for a 49 dollar massage i will likely go to a place where i pay a little more but get a better experience overall. in this situation --- you get what you pay for! read more

I went in for the 30 minute rapid tension massage. I was taken to the room at 11:37 for my 11:30 appointment, and after a 5 minute consultation we began. We ended promptly at 12. The massage therapist didn't seem to be too knowledgeable about the service or the machine. Went here last Friday afternoon and it was pretty good. The receptionist was nice and so was my masseuse but it wasn't fantastic like I've had in the past from other massage places. She worked on the places I asked her to concentrate on and I felt sore the next day but I wasn't in pain or anything.
