I'm not sure if you can say a bad thing about a good massage. I've been going to Massage Envy for almost a decade. I've been loyal to a few therapists during my time there (until they leave) and have loved their work. Monica is my current therapist and I'm not sure if this page could fit all the wonderful things. I've had back issues since college and was hurt additionally at the chiropractor. I was hesitant to go or do anything that could leave me in more pain. My working theory was that massage would be a gentler option. This was definitely the right path. I'm sure when I leave Monica is exhausted from all the surprise knots my back has in store, but she has always done an amazing job. I personally require deep tissue and she's the girl for the job. Massage Envy has an array of therapists for each level of need so there is someone for everybody. For my purposes, Massage Therapy (and Monica for that matter) are essential to me living a less painful existence. read more

Never thought I'd join a massage franchise, however, I'm really glad I did. I used to bounce around between various massage therapists, occasionally finding a groupon deal, but never really went to one person consistently. I happen to win a gift card to Massage Envy at a work fundraiser and became a member after my visit. I have serious tension and knots in my upper back and the monthly massage basically reminds me that I need to have it worked on regularly. The one negative is finding a staff that is the right fit. In just over a year of going there, I have seen 5 different massage therapists. Three were excellent, one was terrible and the other was just average. Two out of the those 5 left/quit suddenly, including one who was literally the best! So it's a little bit of trial and error finding the right one. Although that's the risk you run in going to a franchise. Also, they all work various schedules, some have limited hours, etc. Overall, though, I enjoy my sessions and the facility is very clean, welcoming and the staff are very pleasant at this location. read more

The massage therapist are good, but this business lacks sound policies and an intuitive app/system! They've recently changed appointments last minute on me to a time that didn't work for me so I had to cancel. Nothing was offered for the inconvenience until I asked about it many minutes later. Before this I had to cancel an appointment as the therapist reached her limit of deep pressure. This should be tracked in their app or system somehow but no, they waited the week of to tell me and it's damn near impossible to reschedule in a time less than 2 weeks out for my preferences. I was told this was an app limitation, yet their recorded message directs you to book on their app. FYI - My app profile list my style of pressure! After needing something more consistent due to our busy work schedules, the wife and I elected to cancel. I picked up her firm and turned mine in. Cancellation was processed in less than 30 minutes as they processed my payment that I owed! Turned in my wife's cancellation two days before she rolled over to a new credit. They conveniently waited to process cancellation after the payment was drafted. She already had 6.5 or so credits which she has to use ~70 days after cancellation, so let's give her more Credits to crunch in to an already depleted staff and lack of appointment availabilities. My wife already tried to make her appointments on the app coming back from our vacation in anticipation of having to use quickly but the app didn't allow her to look beyond Mid-November. I asked for the refund but no one but the owner can make this decision so why should I talk to Cortney (manager) or Brittany (front desk help). They're worried about their bottom lines and it's a money grab business so not surprised now that they had to change their hours due to staff shortage. I've enjoyed the odd massage now and then, and this weekend I decided I wanted to unwind with one. After googling for local massage places, I decided on Massage Envy. They were able to work me in the next day, which was a definite plus. The location is a little tricky to find - I drove past it once before seeing it in the back left corner of the shopping center that houses Jo-Ann fabrics. Inside is an elegant, contemporary lobby and courteous staff. They were extremely professional and immediately made me feel welcome. The pre-massage waiting area is well stocked with naturally-flavored spa water and various snacks. I waited there for about 2 minutes before meeting my massage therapist. We discussed my goal for the session (eg: relaxation, sports injury rehabilitation, stress), then I got to totally bliss out for 50 minutes. Heated massage table, relaxing music, and somebody else kneading my cares away . . . If this isn't heaven, it's pretty darn close! That introductory massage was just $49.99 since it was my first time at a Massage Envy. Otherwise they are $99.99. There is an option to sign up for their wellness membership and get monthly massages for $59.99/month for a full year. I have been a member of Massage Envy for about a year now. This is by far my favorite Massage Envy location. They just opened up recently and they have a beautiful facility. They have a great relaxation room, that members go to so they can wait in for their Massage Therapist or Esthetician. I can tell the owners care about their members because unlike other locations, they stock their relaxation room with snacks, teas, flavored water and regular water. Not to mention the super comfy chairs they have. I also love the fact that the sons of the owners work at the front desk and ensure that all of their members are happy. Speaking about the front desk, the staff are very welcoming and just make it a pleasure to go there. The massage therapist that work at this location are also very good. You can tell the owners treat their staff well, because the massage therapists are happy and treat their clients great! They specialize in all types of massages from relaxing to deep tissue. Maryah is the best at facials. Hands down. I recently moved to the Hamden area and was hesitant about going to a new location however I am so glad I did. She was so gentle with extractions and made sure to ask me along the way if there was anything I needed or wanted her to change. I am so used to getting facials and having longer periods of waiting while the product sinks in, however she was massaging my face and arms throughout the entire appointment. Went to this location for my first facial. Parking was hard to find, it is in a plaza with a Walmart & 24/7 gym, so be prepared to circle around for a spot. The staff are all very friendly, informative and professional. The warm neck wraps were so relaxing and the wait was very short. I am not a person who gets regular massages, but I was under a lot of stress and was feeling the effects in my shoulders, neck, and upper back. I was desperate for a massage and looked around and remembered that massage envy was close by. They were not able to get me in that quickly, but my schedule is limited so I understand that, no biggie. I had never been to a massage envy so I didn't know what I was getting myself into. But I was pleasantly surprised to see how relaxing the place was. Kayla(I think that was her name) did my massage and she did an excellent job. I really wanted her to focus on my problem areas and she didn't push to more and I really appreciated that. I purchased my girlfriend a gift certificate to get a facial with intentions that she would have a relaxing time at Massage Envy. In brief, her facial started 20 minutes late and ended 5 minutes early. A 60 minute massage was really a 30 minute massage, 25 minutes of the employees trying to cram product down her throat, and 5 minutes worth of questioning as to why she wouldn't buy any products or sign up for a monthly membership. I'm sure not everyone has experienced this sort treatment at Massage Envy in Hamden, but to hear that it happened was shocking and quite annoying considering it wasn't cheap. Lastly, avoid contact with the receptionist. I believe her name started with a "T". Very pushy and unprofessional. read more

They cater to my needs, especially since I made it clear that I did my research prior to coming and I decided to go with them because they had the best reviews and most understandable membership program. I'm completely terrified of massages, I thought they hurt, but my doctor told me I need to get massages on a monthly to bi-monthly basis. Massage envy in Hamden listened to my needs and recommended Linda to give me my first massage. Linda listened to me and adjusted the pressure of the massage to my needs and comfortability. I felt so much better after the massage and knew that I had to sign up as a member. The facility is absolutely gorgeous and relaxing. The setup is beautiful. They give you a nice tour. The complimentary gifts and items are top notch. I recently had a problem between this branch and the other location I now have to go to because I moved. Massage envy assisted me and found a valid solution to my problem. I called to re-book an appointment on a Monday (in March) to reschedule an appointment from the following Sunday to Friday. When my fiancee and I arrived, the person at the desk (David) informed us that there was no such appointment. We were polite and booked an appointment for 2 weeks later. He made no effort whatsoever to wrong the right or to offer any complimentary services. On the morning of the rescheduled appointment, David called us less than an hour before the appointment to say that one of the 2 therapists was ill. I told him that this was the 2nd inconvenience and he stated, "Oh, I remember supposedly you had called to make an appointment that never appeared on the books." I interpreted this as him accusing me of fabricating the story. He had an attitude with me on the phone and again made no effort to right the wrong, try to book us another appointment at another location, or offer complimentary add-ons to our next massage. I told him we would start to book our massages at another location. A few days later, Massage Envy called to ask us to book another appointment (wanting our business of course.) I informed the woman who called that I was unhappy with this Massage Envy location and that I would be booking at the Milford location from now on. She was very apologetic and offered to have me speak with a manager. I spoke with the manager Melissa Nelson, and explained to her the entire story. I was very polite. She was very apologetic. I explained that as a PAYING MEMBER monthly of their company that I felt that we should have been treated better. I explained that we both understand that things happen, but we were looking for some type of small compensation (not a free massage, perhaps complimentary aroma therapy) for our next massage. She asked me to please email her a detailed description of the events and of the desired outcome. The email is below: "Hello! We just spoke on the phone. About a month ago my boyfriend and I booked a massage. I called to reschedule (from a Sunday 1pm appointment) to the following Friday. Something happened and the Friday appointment had never been booked. Mistakes happen, not a huge deal. When we came in that Friday evening David was working and made absolutely no effort to right the wrong. I could be incorrect in my perception, but he really did not seem to care too much that we had been inconvenienced. He of course said sorry, but made no effort to compensate for the inconvenience. We re-booked for this past Sunday at 11am. Less than an hour before the scheduled massage time David called to inform us that the therapist was ill. Again, I understand that these things happen. I felt that was not sufficient notice as we were about to head out the door to come. I asked if there was anything he could do for us since our previous appointment also did not occur. David said something to the degree of, "oh I remember, supposedly you had called [to book an appointment that never occurred]." I remember specifically that he used the word "supposedly." I did not appreciate that as it suggested that I made up that story. At that point in the phone conversation I got a bit short with David, which I of course am sorry for as I generally do not conduct my affairs in that way. He said there was nothing he could do and was not at all apologetic nor did he make any effort to right the two wrongs. In my and my boyfriend's experience with customer service, we feel that he should have called other local Massage Envy locations to attempt to find an appointment for us, or offered some sort of discount or complimentary add-on the the next massage. We both feel that when you are a member, like we are paying members at Massage Envy, that implies that we are treated a certain way as we pay monthly, and that issues get fixed. I also feel that David should have informed you or another manager of our unhappiness with 2 messed up appointments, and we were hoping that someone would call to try and fix the situation. We are both teachers, we understand that things happen that are out of people's control. We however are unhappy with the way the situations were handled, and are willing to go elsewhere if they cannot be fixed. I am willing to apologize to David for my tone, as it was rude and unnecessary. Thank you so much for your time!" She ASSURED me on the phone that she would call the NEXT morning. I received no phone call from Melissa. However this morning the Hamden Massage Envy branch called AGAIN to ask if we wanted to book an appointment. I asked the woman to please never call my number again as I would be booking at another location from now on. read more

However, recently a physical condition prohibits me from going and they have refused to give me my money back for a month that got charged (even though I never used it and won't be able to use it). They simply state every time that it is impossible to give me my money back given company regulations. I have asked if they can give me credit to buy something in their store and they have refused. For a company that claims to cater to your physical needs (which I really believed before), they are certainly being unaccommodating. I will not be using massage envy in the future. read more

I became a Massage Envy member because I was laid off, started a new job, and my mom moved across the country, so I inherited all of her "long lost attic bins," all within three weeks and in the middle of my wedding planning and intense fitness routine! To say that I was carrying a lot of stress in my neck and shoulders is an understatement. I'm so glad I decided to address my stress levels and get pampered at a great price and with excellent service! Stephanie spent a lot of time on my neck and shoulders, and sacrificed some time elsewhere like my scalp or hands, because she knew my body really needed the extra attention in certain areas. Unprofessional. Feels more like a school or training facility than a professional business. I went in with an open mind, filled out a profile, waited to meet my esthetician, only to be kicked out after telling her I had used a mild retinoid in the past week. Apparently this is their policy, yet it's not on their website or mentioned when you make an appt. This means they have the right to kick you out, no warning, right there in the treatment room. The most upsetting part was the complete lack of humility or concern from the staff. They took no responsibility for failing to relay their policy when I made my appt. Had they done so, I would not have cleared my schedule, travelled to Hamden, & wasted my time that day. I especially do not recommend Maggie. She shrugged her shoulders about the entire situation. These people don't value the few customers they have. The manager, who I had spent 20 mins talking with before the appt, wouldn't even look at me as I was leaving. I was the only one in the store. He kept his eyes down until I said, "OK, I'm going," at which point he gave me a hurried goodbye while still looking at his computer. I've been getting facials all my life, and I was looking for a hydrating facial, nothing harsh, which is absolutely possible even if you've used retinoids in the past week. The bottom line is, these people aren't professionals. If they were, they wouldn't be at a franchise massage chain, they'd be at a real spa. You get what you pay for.
