I've been going to Elm City Wellness the past year for both Community and Private Acupuncture...mostly seeing Dr. Stephanie Carey-Northrop. Having previously experienced the benefits of Acupuncture outside of CT, I was excited to once again have access to Community acupuncture. I can't imagine my time in New Haven without Elm City Wellness. I ended up doing a handful of massages with Adonis and community acupuncture with Ed, and both were great. Adonis is really chill and accommodating and really helped me with shoulder and neck tension every time. I'd definitely recommend him! While ECW has been my only experience with community acupuncture, I can definitely say that Ed put my mind at ease. He was gentle and kind and good at setting expectations for the session. You could see that he can work with lots of different types of clients, even five at a time in the community setting. I was in the market for a massage due to a big event coming up and decided to book my visit for a sixty minute Reiki massage at their Whitney Avenue location since my regular therapist had retired. They offer many amenities like candles, incense and CBD products. You sit in the waiting room next to the front desk while your therapist gets ready for your appointment. It is comfortable but I was nervous because there is a lot to take in and it was a bit of sensory overload, which is the opposite of what a relaxing experience is for me. They have hand sanitizer in every room and are COVID compliant with mask wearing signs and touchless payment. I felt the customer service was fine but a bit lacking for the following reasons: 1. You can fill out your intake forms prior to arriving to save you some time, but it is highly likely that no one read it because they asked me questions that I had explained on the form in detail. I wouldn't have bothered if I was going to be asked as though they heard it for the first time (not to confirm information, which would have made me feel better). 2. If it is your first time visiting a practice, it's nice to feel welcomed there. They weren't unfriendly, but they weren't that attentive. Maybe I am biased because when I went to a dentist appointment earlier that week everyone (the front desk, assistant and dentist) explicitly welcomed me to the practice. You really remember the little things and taking the extra 30 seconds to acknowledge something can make a huge difference in how you feel about a business. At the beginning of the massage, I was asked the standard questions: if I was comfortable, if I had gotten massages before and what type of pressure I wanted but wasn't really asked for feedback about the massage during it. We were very quiet and I wasn't sure I was allowed to tell her she could add more pressure, especially since she seemed kind of hesitant to touch me. That is totally a me thing, and I am not blaming the therapist for this. Overall, it was an okay massage and the therapist was nice but I still had a few spots that needed to be done, including my arms, which were missed entirely, so that was disappointing. Maybe the style was not what I should have gone for but I wanted to healing element of the Reiki to calm me and perhaps should have booked a longer massage length. My body felt somewhat better than when I got there, but I know how it could have been. Maybe if I could read the dynamics a bit better I would be able to advocate for myself. Again, not blaming the therapist for this, sometimes you don't vibe with your therapist/location and that's okay. It is a beautiful space and it's not bad, hence the three stars. read more

I highly recommend Dr. Stephanie Carey-Northrop who I've been seeing at another location for a number of skeletal and muscular issues. She sees you as a whole person and will suggest a number of strategies and treatments accordingly. I have had acupuncture for years with a number of different practitioners and none have gone beyond the standard acupuncture and included other facets of Chinese medicine. I just think so highly of her and feel like I've found a practitioner who can work with and augment traditional medicine with Chinese medicine to provide the best care. read more

My daughter gave me a gift certificate for Christmas for a massage and I chose a deep one in order to get at those knots in my shoulders and upper back. Adonis was my therapist. He carefully asked me to respond to his touch, which I did throughout. He was artful in his touch. I could sense that he knew what he was feeling with his hands. I left feeling completely restored. This is now 24 hours later and I am still feeling so relaxed even though I have been working on my computer all day. Adonis is a masterful therapist. I would recommend him to anyone. read more

Best place to become human again. Period. Ed is a magical guru who can help improve any malady in a quick session of community acupuncture. Back is out and you can barely walk? Ed will fix you right up. Migraine? He knows where to place those needles and transform you back to human form. Ankles, knees, shoulders? Yep. Ed approaches each client thoughtfully and crafts a personalized treatment to get you feeling better. I was terrified of needles and after a 3rd knee surgery, finally gave it a try. After one session, my knee felt better than it had in YEARS. Since then, acupuncture served a critical part in recovery from 2 traumatic ankle injuries enabling a return to full motion well ahead of the doctor's prediction. I can't say enough about how thankful I am for Ed's treatments! If massage is your thing, this is THE place. All of the massage therapists are extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Today I'm going to rave about Annie. Wow!! I had a completely blissful 90 minutes with Annie today. She listened to my concerns and worked through the many knots plaguing my body after a weekend full of painting and yard work. She found spots I didn't even know were hurting, gently addressed the healing ankle, and dug in deep to release fascia. I also want to give a shout out to Alyssa, who expertly and politely manages reception, juggling phone calls, intake and check out. Ive been going here for years now and I highly recommend it. Sharon & Taryn are my top favorite massage therapists, although in the past i also saw Shanon, and several others whose names I cant recall but all were great. I live in East rock, and tbh when it first opened i didnt even bother checking it out, assuming it was yet another overpriced establishment catering to the upperclass. I was surprised to learn how reasonable their services are, and how many types of services they offer. Fromwhat I hear, they treat employees well and they love working here. Perhaps this is why they attract such talented therapists. Each time I go for a massage, i feel healed physically (and educated) and also like i've been genuinely cared for by an emotionally healing person. I am so grateful for these people. read more

I went twice over the summer. The first time was for a therapeutic massage for my shoulder. The therapist took the time to listen to my needs and understand what I had been feeling and came up with a hypothesis of what she anticipated it was. Only after we talked for a bit did she decide to tell me to get undressed and she would get started. When she came back in she got right into the area of my shoulder to see if it was indeed what she thought it was and she was right! She worked it so so well. I left feeling pain free and just so great. I loved that she really listened before getting started. Best experience I've ever had. The second time I went was for a 90 minute deep tissue. A different therapist, but still a complete rockstar. She applied the appropriate pressure to each area and really took her time in places that needed extra attention. I was in HEAVEN. Excellent location. And the atmosphere as a whole is wonderful, calming, and relaxing. Every member of the staff I interacted with was amazing. From calling to make the appointment, to changing my time the day before, to walking out of the building. So great. read more

I loved my massage at Elm City Wellness! The woman at the front desk was inviting and helped me with the initial background paperwork. The massage therapist, Ross, went through my form with me to make sure he had all the information right. The massage room was relaxed, and they already had the massage table warmer on which was great. Ross was thorough and worked on my back pain. It turns out it was from a hip imbalance I had developed from carrying my kids! I would have never figured that out without his insightful approach to bodywork. After the massage, we spoke about things I could do by myself to help address my discomfort. I felt well taken care of at Elm City, and will definitely be back! read more

In my hunt for a decent spa in New Haven County, I tried a 60-minute Swedish massage at Elm City Wellness. There are a number of things I look for in a great spa experience: the reception ambiance, the room ambiance, and the actual service. He latter two were excellent. The massage bed was heated, the lighting very dim, and there was a faint smell of essential oil. The walls also went up to the ceiling, unlike some other places I've been to, which definitely helps cut down noise. The massage was wonderful-- extremely relaxing, just enough pressure, and very quiet. I almost fell asleep-- a sign of a good massage :) However, for a great spa experience, after checking in at reception, you'd change into a robe in the locker room and then have tea or water in the waiting area while relaxing music played in the background. At Elm City Wellness, the waiting area is connected to the main desk area, and it was not so relaxing to listen to the phones being answered. There was also no locker room or refreshments offered. I did like their selection of goods in the shop, which was connected to the waiting area. Finally, I just want to note that there were a concerning number of warnings and policies about the massage on every email, on the website, and told over the phone-- in addition to a strange waiver I signed about it being my responsibility to speak up if the massage was bad! It was somewhat off putting, but I guess they must have a problem with no shows. read more

This was my first time receiving acupuncture and even in the community setting it was incredibly relaxing and felt really personalized. A wellness center with fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable staff that offers deals on massages? Score! When I managed to injure my back while exercising I sought relief and relied upon Yelpers' reviews of Elm City Wellness (since my doctor 'didn't believe it would help'). It only took one session for me to get an incredible amount of relief, but I certainly took advantage of their 3 massage package deal so that I could more affordably return and work out the rest of my body's kinks. Their space is tranquil and friendly, you're immediately greeted upon entry and offered water while you wait (and also after your appointment). I've had great massages from different practitioners, and although each are individuals they are all professionals who make sure they know why you came so that they can offer the best experience/relieve your aches. I'm thrilled their new space is within walking distance of our apartment - I only wish they had someone who did Thai Yoga Bodywork! read more

Elm City Wellness is a little gem hiding in New Haven. I have been there for deep tissue massages at least three times now and I have alway left there more than satisfied. I have many aches and damages in my little body and I've always felt rejuvenated after the massages here. Their masseuses know their stuff, they go exactly to the spots I need them to intuitively working out the problem areas. Just this week I had some intense shoulder pain and as a ceramic artist I need to make sure I am mindful of my body so that I can keep working many years. For the first time I tried the community acupuncture there and I found immediate relief and a feeling of security that they can help, not only my shoulder, but many of the other problems that already existed. Tightness of muscles here or there that cause headaches will start loosening with more treatments. I am a believer!! Check them out if you care for your body. It's a 1000 times better than taking any pill. read more

I was first on Marissa table back when she was Massage by Marissa, and I knew she was something special. I was in a lot of pain from plantars fasciitis and about to travel the cobbled streets of Rome for my honeymoon. Breaking up fascia can be extremely painful, but Marissa was kind, caring, After she opened Elm City Wellness, I became a frequent client. I have been to ECW for chiropractic work, acupuncture, yoga classes, facials, and massage (thai, cranio, hot stone, psoas work). I highly recommend all of their services. Although I was skeptical of acupuncture at first, Ed has given me more relief for my allergy and sinus problems than anything over the counter, any neti pot or sinus rinse, anything I have ever tried. I've also had acupuncture for chronic knee pain. Ed has always been patient and explained exactly what he is doing. He is kind and calm-- and has such a deep intuitive knowledge. He seems to know what is wrong with my immediately. (A side note, I sent my Marine husband to Ed-- he was even more skeptical and told Ed he didn't "believe it would work." He came from one session completely converted and loving acupuncture. Now he has acu before ever PT test he does). Melissa's yoga classes are some of my favorite-- she gives great cues and has an awesome energy. Plus, the classes are small and intimate, so I get personal attention and adjustments as needed. Stephanie's facials are such a treat! Not only is she a lovely soul, she loves what she does-- and you can feel it. Her products are yummy, and your face will thank you for the treat. While Marissa and Rachel are my favorite massage therapists, everyone who works at ECW is fabulous. I've never had a bad massage, and I have been on MULTIPLE tables. Each therapist brings her own flavor and love to her work. They do an extensive intake beforehand-- which it totally worth it so they know how to gear the massage TO YOUR BODY AND YOUR NEEDS. A side note on staff, Jen is a delight to email or call to schedule an appointment, and she is always friendly and warm when you arrive. Going to Elm City Wellness has taught me that massage is not a luxury-- it is truly about wellness. I always feel better after leaving ECW-- and I feel like I'm getting even more than my body fixed... I'm getting my soul nourished. I cannot recommend this place or this tribe of therapist and healers more. Plus, the prices are affordable (and they have frequent specials). What's not to love? read more

I wish I lived closer to this place. As someone who tries to receive bodywork & massage on a regular basis.. Elm City Wellness is THE ONLY place to go...no matter what you're looking for. The description on the door says it best; ECW is "a community of healers who have a passion for body work." Everyone there is beyond skilled in their craft and the love they all have for their work, their clients, and each other radiates through you while you are there. The staff is a family and you feel a part of it while you're there. Also, The new space is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. There is a small parking lot right in front which is rare for New Haven, plus there is tons of street parking all around. The treatment rooms are lovely; clean, calming, and just perfect. They have a nice classroom space for community acupuncture, yoga, and actual classes that they seem to be scheduling every week now if you're following them on email or social media. It seems the new space is allowing for so much growth and service offerings.. it's so great to see an independently owned business spread their wings like this! We need more of this! The receptionist didn't confirm the length with me when I checked in. Good service but I got charged twice what I was expecting. Katie answered the phone, it was approximately 5:22pm. Unfortunately they were fully booked with the exception of a last minute cancellation in 8 mins! I wasn't going to be able to make the 5:30pm 1 hour slot but, she did offer me a 6pm slot for a 30 min session and I am SO glad I took it. Yesterday was my second visit to Elm City Wellness and I was yet again blown away by their massage therapists. I work out and lift regularly and try to get regular massages. My first visit to Elm City was a last minute appointment with Rian (female) who was super professional and gave a really awesome relaxing massage. She also recommended a couple other therapists at Elm City that were more suited for my needs which I truly appreciated. After speaking with the owner, Marissa as well, I decided to go see Devon (female) who is a massage therapist and is a certified personal trainer. I cannot say enough good things about Devon. For those who are in the fitness and lifting community, you all NEED to go see Devon. She gave the best massage I've ever gotten and by the end was talking to me about what I can do better in my workouts to target my under developed muscle groups. She also spent a couple minutes with me after to help me with my dead lifting form. I can't wait to come back in a few weeks and I will also be trying her corrective movement sessions. Lastly, this place is super welcoming, calming and clean. read more

I am just crazy for Elm City Wellness! The new space has easy parking, is beautiful lit and decorated, and the front desk people are always friendly and efficient. I have been for acupuncture with Ed and Jen, and for a massage with Donna. All three are fantastic, and have their own personal styles (this is not a cookie cutter place!). Consistent is their friendly and calming demeanor sand their knowledge about what they're doing. I couldn't recommend this place more highly: it is affordable, friendly, beautiful and the practitioners are great at what they do. read more
