I currently live in MA, and drive over 20 miles to get one of the best Italian meals on Federal Hill at Massio Restaurant. The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. Their lunch specials are incredible, and the prices can't be beat. Be sure to try their signature creamy, tomato soup. You will be hooked!! Currently, I am a Nurse and an EMT so enjoying a great meal at the end of the day is a plus. My next career move is going to be working for the Phantom Gourmet, as I travel across New England always looking for the most amazing places with the best dishes that are reasonably priced. We walked in on the Friday after Christmas. The restaurant was fairly busy. We made our way to the bar- two people were there as well as the hostess and a waitress. No bartender behind the bar and no acknowledgment from Massimo that we were even customers. I give this a one star out of fairness, since we had no food, cocktails or service. Dynamite !!!! Ugh so good ! So I went with my family and it was just awesome! We ordered a bottle of the Riesling and it arrived promptly. Like any good upscale restaurant, they had the host taste the wine before pouring everyone else's portions. We proceeded to have the eggplant parm as an app and it was so good we got another !!!! We also had the meatballs as an app and they were AWESOME!!! Disclosure: I am Italian so it's very hard for me to say a meatball other than moms is good and they were the best I've ever had at a restaurant! Their marinara was so flavorful and delicious! For entrees I got their pollo al limone, and it was so good !!! The sauce was ugh oh my gosh ! (I wish I had better adjectives haha) I subbed the escarole and artichokes for the root veggies (server recommendations) and if you like carrots and Brussels sprouts it's great (to me, that's not my preference when having veggies) but they were good! The potato cake had a little lemon kick to it but it was delightful! We were so stuffed we couldn't get dessert (and it looked good too!) But aside from the food, the service was outstanding! Our server was very attentive to our table, extremely knowledgeable of the menu and the different items they offer...I wish I knew his name but he was great! This was nicely decorated- loved the atmosphere. It was crowded when we arrived but were seated for a table for 2 immediately. I would recommend a reservation for a larger party. The bread and spread they delivered while waiting for our food was really tasty. My husband ordered the chicken Parmesan which was really delicious, and I ordered the rib gnocchi. It was an interesting combo of flavors. Not my favorite gnocchi dish I've ever had but I appreciated a new take on it (at lease new to me). What stood out most to us was the staff. Everyone from the waiter, the guy the cleared our table and boxed our food, and the from desk hosts were all super friendly and nice! It was pretty noisy, not an environment for a quiet visit or date ( my husband I had a hard time hearing each other over the noise) but a fun, and cute place to try! No parking lot that we could see, just parking spots along the street to pay by the hour. read more

One of my foodie goals is to visit providence more often to try out the amazing restaurants in the area. Since my visit was a last minute trip, I wasn't able to snag a reservation for a Saturday night for any of the restaurants in the area. Luckily massimo has a table available immediately so I decided to eat here. We got two of the specials of the night: the veal chop over pasta and the stuffed squash appetizer. The squash appetizer was really interesting and unique. I would recommend it if it is still available. The veal was tender and fairly decent sized along with flavorful pasta. However this dish was a bit pricy at 40 dollars. I also ordered the short rib gnocchi. The short rib is shredded into the pasta so it's hard to tell it's there. The pasta sauce was a bit sour and my stomach isn't able to handle sour sauces so I only ended up eating a small portion of it. This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Providence. We spent 4 years visiting our son in Friartown and made a point to visit with him, family, and friends at Massimo every time we came up. We always had exceptional meals and fantastic service ! For his graduation this year we had Massimo cater a party that we had in his off-campus house. The food was awesome and beyond our expectations - everyone loved it! They have lots of gluten free options on the menu which make it very easy if you have folks with allergies in your party. What do we love (what don't we love?) : The Meatballs, Brussel Sprouts, Roasted Potatoes, The AntiPasto, All Risottos, Baked Gnocchi, Short Rib Gnocchi, Rigatoni Vodka, Chicken Parm, Piccata, Marsala, Roasted Pork Tenderloin and any/all specials are worth a try. I went here on a recommendation from the bartender at Red Fin Crudo the previous night. Was in town for a work conference and wanted to check out Federal Hill. I had a little less than an hour and the waiters were friendly, prompt and responsive. I had the catch of the day dish and it was amazing. The seafood with the chorizo and tomatoes and seasoning was perfection. My waiter also recommended a Pinot Grigio that was the best I've had, spicey and light but not watery. What I'm still dreaming about days later though is the focaccia bread. Perfect blend of salty and oil with a crunch on the outside, light and soft inside. I did sit outside which was noisy at night but I didn't mind it as I was engrossed in my food and book. A fabulous Italian food evening overall! read more

Excellent food and service. Lots of Italian places on The Hill so it's hard to stand out, especially when this is a new name in a know location, however Massimo did not disappoint. Went for the first time during restaurant week. Nothing like getting to try several things at once for a lower price. Very pleased with the apps the arracini was very good and the marinara was fresh. For dinner got this huge pork chop which I tend to not order out, it has a unique like fig sauce and I was apprehensive but I was wrong was very good! Potatoes however were undercooked! One thing that's silly but I judge Italian places by is bread served and I have to say I was so impressed! Love the bread station that had when you walk in and they change out so I went from a focaccia to a crusty Italian bread and both were so good, also a good quality olive oil is a must. read more

We made reservations to celebrate my fathers 80th birthday over 6 weeks ago. This was a big celebration with close friends and family driving from all over include 4 hours away in New York. This restaurant took my mothers credit card information and then NEVER MADE THE RESERVATION. The woman in charge of large party reservations reserved at their sister restaurant Massimo instead and never told anyone!! When we showed up at Pane e Vino, she refused to look up the records and the restaurant REFUSED to call Massimo like we asked insisting they were all booked. We were turned away and My father's 80th birthday was ruined. To make it worse - Massimo called an hour later to find out why we never showed up!! This woman should be fired. She is so incompetent and unprofessional. And shame on the manager of Pane e Vino for refusing to listen to us or make a simple phone call. AVOID BOTH THESE RESTAURANTS AT ALL COST!! read more

For my final meal in RI, my fam and I headed to Massimo Restaurant located in historic Providence. We wanted to dine at Enoteca Umberto, but they were booked until late-August so that was a no-go. Apparently, you need to call ahead at LEAST a month in advance to score a reservation. We were disappointed but wanted pasta so we hit up a different Italian place instead. Lucky for us, Massimo's was a truly incredible alternative. Our hostess led us up to our table on the 2nd floor, and we were immediately taken by the ambiance - definitely bring a date here if you're looking to impress! They had LED string lights hanging from the windows (tasteful not tacky BTW) over semi-opaque curtains so lighting was spot on, and their table settings were beautiful. We were promptly greeted by our waitress, and she gave us some solid recommendations: Burrata Ravioli ($19), Spaghetti al Nero con Aragosta ($28), Pappardelle alla Bolognese ($21), and Pollo ai Limone ($22). We decided to split all the aforementioned dishes so we just placed them all in the middle and got sharing plates. The ravioli had burrata filling and was served with chopped asparagus, bits of tomato, and tossed in extra virgin olive oil. The spaghetti was made with black squid ink pasta, local lobster, english peas, seasonal mushrooms, and lobster cream sauce. The pappardelle came out perfectly cooked in a veal and beef ragu with shaved grana padano, and the chicken was accompanied by artichokes, escarole, and a fontina potato cake in a lemon-white-wine sauce. I wasn't a huge fan of the squid ink pasta, but I pretty much loved everything else! The pappardelle was definitely the high point for me though - hands down, the best pasta dish I've had in years. We were stuffed after devouring all four entrees, but we wanted to finish the meal off on a sweet note so we placed an order for a slice of housemade tiramisu, which was such a good call. Really nice place here at Massimo. Nice energy and the staff was really cool. Very pretty inside. Felt like there was a nice flow and the windows made it feel really airy and bright. The yellow chairs are a nice touch in my opinion. Really makes everything else pop and feel friendly and welcoming. I had the Short Rib Gnocchi and Rigatoni Al Forno. Went to Massimo before a show at the Columbus last week. I saw their menu and was completely in awe I couldn't decide between the squid ink pasta and the carbonara for my meal. I ended up opting for the carbonara after the waitress said it was more traditional style carbonara which i has never had. It definitely wasn't as creamy as carbonaras I'm usually accustomed to. Overall, it was petty good! I definitely would love to head back to try the squid ink pasta in the future. read more

Let's start off with, very disappointed. The best part of the night was the bread beef ore the meal. We were looking for a great dinner on fed hill but did not find it here. The calamari was awfully chewy. The chicken in the gnocchi was gross, the sauce they used had no flavor. The filet was cooked good and actually good but did not make up for everything else. The table two down for us waited over a half hour for their dessert, then canceled it and left, so we did not even bother to order it, went somewhere else for it. After our food was wrapped we waited 25 minutes till the check came, and another 15 before it was rung in, then brought back with no paper to sign...overall it was a disaster. read more

I had the Rigatoni al Forno with sausage (substituted gnocchi for rigatoni on my friends suggestion). 2 members of our party had gnocchi Con punte di Manzo, which I tried, and it was also amazing. 1 member of our party was gluten free and they had a very nice menu of gluten free options which included pasta! We split the lemon ricotta cheesecake for dessert. It was very good but there was only a hint of lemon. The service was impeccable and the manager Nick was very nice. Was very disappointed at the Fruite Da Mare- all of the fish was chewy! The pork chop of over done. Even the Caesar salad was only fair. We should have said something early on, but the waitress was over worked and not easy to find. The manager was very good when he found out, and brought deserts. Really great Italian-American food. I decided to check this place out with my family one afternoon for lunch, as we had yet to visit Federal Hill. We were very pleased with the food and service. As a starter, we ordered the Polpette. The four large meatballs were superb, as was the tomato and ricotta it was served with. They were a great starter for the table and I could eat an entire dish of them. The Veal Parmigiano was perfectly cooked with a superb tomato sauce. The pasta was some of the best I've had in a long time. My wife had the Tortelloni di Granchio which was just awesome. The Sherry-Shallot Cream sauce was direct spoon-to-mouth worthy, for sure! One of my kids ordered the Massimo Burger... wow! This thing is huge! If you're in the mood for a burger at an Italian joint (hey... kids, right?), this is definitely worth trying. I'd definitely come back, the food was exactly what I was looking for and the service was great. They were very tolerant of some fidgety, hungry kids and everyone left pleased and full! read more

If you are looking to rearrange your wedding into an intimate affair in the time of COVID-19 like we were or just a cozy date night you can't go wrong with choosing massimo. We had to reschedule our June 2020 wedding to January 2021 and as our date got closer it became clear we were gonna have to give up our dream of a 160 person or even 50 person wedding and shifted to an intimate affair with only our immediate families. I reached out to massimo and they made everything so easy. They had several amazing packages to choose from and even though there pizza wasn't a listed option for an appetizer they made it happen for us. Jessica was the event planner I dealt with and she was so attentive and amazing during the whole process. The day before I dropped off supplies to decorate the tables and as a little nervous not seeing the final product before hand but when I walked in she did better then I could have even pictured arranging everything it looked so beautiful! The food as always with massimo was absolutely amazing. All of our family members have continually said they were floored with how good it was. I don't remember the name of our server for the night but she was phenomenal. Was super attentive made sure everyone always had a full glass and what they needed but wasn't overbearing. I could not be happier or more satisfied with our experience and could not recommend them enough especially to someone who is looking to plan an event! We were in town for Waterfire and made reservations here because they had a very extensive gluten free menu posted on their website. It also happened to be the last night or Restaurant Week, which worked out well for me! We sat upstairs and the dining room space was lovely and comfortable. Our server was terrific - friendly, honest, attentive! I had the three course Restaurant Week menu with an arancini in tomato and cream sauce (with peas and pancetta inside - delightful), burrata cheese ravioli with asparagus and roasted tomato in an olive oil and garlic sauce (the cheese was really creamy), and pear and lady finger dessert similar to a tira misu. Great Service ! For starters. My bf and I decided to dine on a Saturday night just 10 mins before close (a big NO NO) and the staff was still super pleasant and kind. One of the single best dining experiences I have had in a while. The excellent food was actually surpassed by the most attentive, while not overbearing server, Kamraan. The meal started with two types of bread. One was both crusty and chewy with lots it nooks. It was served with a pepper, onion, tomato "relish" that had me eat all of it! The second was a focaccia bread with a hint of spice. No tomato relish needed. I also had the white prosecco sangria. It was light and sweet, garnished with lime and orange. We had the Eggplant Parmesan appetizer. Thin slices of lightly battered peeled eggplant layered with San Marzano tomato sauce and topped with fresh Mozzarella. The sauce was the most flavorful I've tasted! You could taste the olive oil. They ground fresh Romano cheese and black pepper at the table. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara. It was prepared properly with aged Pecorino Romano, Guanciale ham(crispy & flavorful fat!) and an egg yolk on top. Stir in the egg with the salty Romano and ham and I loved it! Wife had gnocchi with slow braised short rib and shaved cheese. It was amazing! We had a roasted cauliflower dish that had: zucchini, currents, pine nuts and bread crumbs. Just Wow. Constant attentive service from Kamraan completed this experience. We skipped coffee and dessert here so we could go to Pastiche! Lots of bread, 2 drinks, 1 shared app and 2 entrees $98.
