I've been to the Mast General Store in Asheville a handful of times over the years. I'm a BIG FAN! General Stores are such a beautiful reminder of days gone by; the variety of a big box, 'one-stop shop' like Wal-Mart with all the charm of a mom-and-pop. They have a fantastic spread of everything from candy to games, jewelry to clothing, housewares to pantry items and kitchen essentials, gifts, decor, and more. You name it! Their clearance is especially good, and even though it seems like a lot of 'stuff' in a little space, they actually have a second floor, so everything is really well-distributed and not at all crowded. Buyer beware: You can easily spend hours in here and it feels like 10 minutes. Always a great way to end a trip to the mountains! read more

Mast General Store caught my eye while exploring downtown Asheville. I always enjoy browsing general stores because you never know what you'll find. My brother and I were waiting for our table to be ready at a nearby restaurant so we decided to take a peek. The store is huge and split into two levels. The main floor has everything you would expect: clothes, novelties, toys, candy, and small selection of food. Downstairs has even more clothes and a few other things. I thought this was the perfect place to buy myself a magnet since I collect them from my travels. Service was fine - I didn't really ask for help but the woman who checked me out was friendly. Overall, Mast is a fun place to stop during downtown explorations and the perfect place to pick up a little trinket. read more

Been in town 3 nights and already have been here twice. First time we came in from the back entrance so I really was not aware of the upper floor. Downstairs mostly outdoor gear. Very nice selection of high quality gear. Staff very helpful. Got some leads on local hiking from Jake who was very helpful while I was waiting for my wife. Second trip started out as a return for my wife but after reading the reviews made a bee line for the upstairs especially as I was smelling fresh popcorn. More clothing upstairs, appeared to be more boutique clothing and then in the back lots of bulk candy in barrels as well as other food items and also the obligatory cheap toys for kids and local souvenirs. Sat in the wooden rocking chairs for sale enjoying my popcorn while waiting for my wife again. Spent a little more money but definitely enjoyable both times. read more

They have a large clothing section with fun Asheville shirts and name brand clothing such as LL Bean and Patagonia. The best part is a large candy section. They have something for everyone both current and old time favorites...wide range of outdoors clothing and shoe labels for women, men and kids, lighter gears, bulk penny candies, old time toys, preppy clothes and accessories, life is good t shirts, kitchen gadgets and utensils, jams and jellies, Yeti, giftware and lots more. There's sooooo MUCH here. If you ask the friendly staff, they probably have it. It's easy to buy things that you never knew you wanted or for gifts here. It's practical, spontaneous and fun! We remember visiting Mast General Store in Valley Cruces years ago and thought it was a really neat place. Then they started expanding all over and seems they've gotten more corporate. The charm is gone and replaced with a lot more major brand names. On our recent visit, this location was very crowded -- not the best feeling during a pandemic. We did look at some items but didn't purchase anything. Think we'll skip it next time we're in town. read more

This is the coolest combination of outdoors shop and tourist trap i've ever had the pleasure of stumbling into. They take the moniker of "general store" to heart as they have a little bit of everything and something for everyone. Downstairs you'll find the more serious camping goods. Utensils, ropes, knives, shoes, maybe even a tent? I wanted to purchase half the store and go on a hike right then. I'd have looked to stylish too. (Camping may be in tents but it also may be in vogue as well.) Upstairs you've got all sorts of goods sporting the name of the city (I got a magnet for my collection), a full section of candy and children's toys, clothing and outdoorsy wear (a lot of made in the USA items if that's your thing. I got a thick and super soft beanie made in the US for $7), and a wide variety of giftables. If I ever find myself back in the area I will definitely stop back in and recommend that you do too! read more

I do a lot of business with online stores and Mast General stands heads and shoulders over all of the others!! Their website is well made and easy to use. They have a lot of great items that aren't overpriced. I placed an order for a couple of key chains and they had the best prices and reasonable shipping. The items got to me super fast, which with COVID a lot of other companies are taking forever to even process and ship orders. When I got the package I was happily surprised that they sent a really nice card that was signed by a real live person and a nicely folded invoice. These might seem like insignificant things, but to me they are wonderful personal touches that make all the difference and sets them apart from their competition. Huge general store, it has two floors to explore, a local downtown Asheville institution. Yes, it's crowded, but you need to brave the crowds and check it out. They have a bit of everything- candies, outdoor clothing, toys. If you forgot something to bring with you, you'll find it here. If you need a cool souvenir, they have fun things here, I loved their selection of local honey, jellies, old fashioned toys. They have magnets, fun t-shirts, kitchen utensils, a bit of everything. The historic signs and charming window displays pulled us in. Lots of postcards & souvenirs. Venturing inside we discovered the barrels of penny candy that isn't penny but by the pound. This is truly a general store that has survived more than 100 yrs. filled with clothing, shoes, housewares, jewelry, gardening items & lots of local jams & books. There were so many crafty, country unique items that were beautifully made & displayed. The basement was as enormous as the store filled with outdoor hiking, camping, fishing ... There was a large parking garage less than a block away & plenty of on street parking spots. Generally poor customer service, despite high quality goods. Worker Nash was of no use as we talked about products we were interested and he was clueless. Frank was a better worker. He had a lot of tips to offer us. He made an innocent mistake and quoted the wrong price of the last remaining coat of a brand. It did not ring up with the price he quoted. He went to talk to the manager Rachel on our behalf. She was quick with him and basically told him, "nope not on sale." I shop a lot and I have NEVER had a manager not come over and apologize for the mistake and try to make it right by the customer. She needs to have more regards for customers. read more

What a cool throwback general store. Reminds me of the old Woolworths or general store. You can basically find anything you want with the exception of food on the two floors of this store. And what's great is that nary an item contained within their walls is what I would describe as kitschy and that was a welcome relief. Personal favorite part of the store was the candy bar section... Went to this great little shop on Friday that's like a landmark in downtown Asheville, been around since the 1800's. This store has everything from souvenirs to clothing to candy. Bought some stuff to take back home to the family and about $15 on candy , so watch how much that bucket is filled. If you're in the area, definitely stop in to be a part of history. read more

This is a 5 star rating. This store is an interesting place because it provide my every needs all in 1 location. First of all, the staff here are very friendly. As I purchased a beverage there, one staff helped me open my drink by using a bottle opener. I didnt have a bottle opener so the kind staff was able to help me out. The place really does have the needs of most people. They carry all the essentials such as kitchenware, postcards, clothing, hats, belts, candy,hiking gear, beverages, and much more. Wished I had a store like this back home. One word of warning. this place had tons of candy. Not one, but two floors filled with all kinds of stuff. They have some nice southern apparel, kids toys, books, home decor, etc. Prices were quite reasonable. They had a lot of inventory marked half off for winter clearance. If I had room in my suitcase I would have brought some things back from this store. Service was also great. Got to love that southern hospitality that seems to be everywhere here in North Carolina! We enjoyed our time window shopping here and surely everyone could find something they'd like. That original ginger ale is quite something. I LUV IT!! That is HOW ginger ale is supposed to be!! So dont you expect that mass-over-produced tin can version of it!!! I rarely write reviews of places other than restaurants. I make the occasional exception, and do so here because Mast General Sores need more publicity. They have been around since eighteen hundred and something. They are the clothing (and candy) equivalent of the Hard Rock Cafe. There is all sorts of memorabilia hanging from the walls, the buildings are old in style, and mostly also in fact, and the range of clothing they sell is second to none. There is cheap stuff and expensive stuff and there are clothes in between. You can buy men's, women's and kids clothes (and probably kit to suit any modern in-between approximation thereof) and there is everything from undies to hats. They have shoes and socks, belts, pants and shorts, shirts, jackets (I got a new Sherpa jacket for Chrissy) lids, gloves and a fabulous array of work, casual, adventure and smart casual schtuff. There are several mast stores about and, there should be many more. But there aren't. And that's a shame. Finally, for the sake of interest, and to comment for those who say Mast is expensive. The Sherpa jacket I got was $259.95. The same thing from Amazon is between $259.95 and $382 on Prime. So there! read more

This is one of the rare finds that you just don't find out west. Mast General Stores have been around since the dawn of ages, but they still manage to keep themselves fresh, relevant and fun. We had been to three other Mast stores in the area, and all have friendly staff with a wide selections of old time memorabilia, candy, games or other vintage collections. The astonishing part to me is that this is NOT a "used" store with estate goods or second hand. How they managed to find brand new lunch pale boxes that you grew up with as a kid, or even managed to find your favorite candies is beyond me! Their collection of knick-knacks is wide. Nothing beats the original Mast General location but we did pop into this one for a bit. Nice and clean with friendly employees. Everything from apparel to kitchen ware and gifts. I wish the magnet and sticker stands had more variety...I don't really need more t-shirts so that's typically what I go for to commemorate a trip.
