As always, Mast is the place to go for.....anything? Seriously, I don't think there is anything Mast doesn't carry. I wouldn't be surprised to see them selling a kitchen sink or two. Take your pick from cast iron wares, a new fly rod, a winter jacket, or a hammock, Mast has it all. They carry all of the great outdoor brands to choose from -- Arcteryx, Marmot, The North Face, Patagonia, Merrell, Suunto, ENO, Mountain Hardwear, etc. Also, bringing kids here has got to be hilariously dangerous. Not only is there candy, but BARRELS full of candy. Sugar pouring out of every corner. God speed, intrepid parental units. Mast is a must. I'll visit every single time I'm in Asheville. read more

Upstairs: assorted sundries (think candy, some clothing, tea towels, picture frames, etc). Good to pick up souvenirs or things to remember the trip by. Downstairs: outdoor gear heaven. Think chacos, sleeping bags, technical gear, base layers, rain jackets, etc. We weren't prepared for the cold snap and were able to score some great end of season deals on a Mountain Harrdware vest ($70 from $150) and a Patagonia pullover ($70 from $120). Maurice.... please don't break a nail trying to help a customer get up off the floor after falling when trying out a display set up on the sales Floor! We were shopping at mast general store in Winston Salem on 12/12/21 between 5:20-5:40 pm when my fiancé tried out one of the Eno chairs, next thing I know they were on the floor. Maurice was walking by as this event happened, he never once asked if they were ok, offered to help them up or anything. My fiancé fixed the display and explained to Maurice how this was a safety hazard. He was not concerned at all. Hopefully nobody SUES your pants off in the future. I am really disappointed in the service we received at this location. Maybe train your employees to have some common courtesy and manners. read more

This place made me LOL because it's so touristy. BUT, their selection of candy is SICK! You can buy candy by the pound, and they have EVERYTHING!!! Pop rocks, GIANT smarties, chocolate covered anything, sour patch kids, every kind of sour, sugar coated gummy ever, and so much more. We got wayyyyyy too much candy and I am SO GLAD. I loved this place! After being hit with all the other stores in Asheville closing at 6pm - I was SO happy to find this open at 7pm on Saturday night! The candy barrels were enough to warrant the 5 stars from me. I probably shouldn't have - but I loaded up 2 lbs of old-fashioned candy - it brought back so many memories! Everything else in the store was just neat - lots of nostalgia - and just some really cute things. It was huge too! I like Mast well enough, but we don't buy much there. We have purchased hiking shoes, outdoor trinkets, candy, and perhaps one or two pieces of clothing, but that is over a decade (at least fifteen visits). The staff is friendly and they carry good merchandise, but the prices always seem a bit high. Four of us were there in March 2009 and I bought a pound or two of candy to give away. Mast General Store takes customer service to a new level. To make a long story short, I had to make a long distance return and there was some confusion on both sides. However, rather than blame me (which it was mostly my fault), they went above and beyond. I'm leaving this positive review because, frankly, they really deserve it. The store is great and there's really nothing like it anywhere else. When you visit, plan to spend at least $20 on random stuff... that's the best part. I left with a unique recycled bag and two bottles of "hot" ginger ale, which were excellent. Next time, I plan to hit the candy aisle a bit more and go with a list for gifts. read more

I shopped online this time for socks. I got the hikers wool socks, store brand, where you buy three and get one free. I last bought these socks about 8 years ago, and they finally wore out (hole in the heel). These are the warmest socks I've found for wearing around the house in winter. Love them! I really appreciate that there is NO plastic in their packing materials! Everything is easily recyclable. Thank you! read more

As others have stated, Mast General is essentially a country general store combined with an REI with a smattering of quirky items thrown in for good measure. The store itself is huge and the staff is very friendly. This is one of those spots that you can't help but step into while walking through downtown Asheville just to see what's going on. Believe me, you could definitely get lost in this store for hours. From clothing to outdoor gear to tons of candy to luggage and Burt's Bees products, it's all here and more! Basically, you could most likely get all of your Holiday shopping done here if you wanted to. Sure, it can be a bit pricey here but not outrageously so and not so much when compared to REI and similar stores. Plus the products tend to be of high quality and there are often sales going on. Last time I was at the store, there was also a puppy adoption going on out front. For me, that put Mast General over the top for the day! read more

I love Mast stores. Hendersonville location was where I was introduced (family member worked there). Now every time we come to Asheville we make a point to visit. (Of course my boyfriend usually finishes shopping before I do so he heads to Barleys across the street and has a beer.) There is always a good sale going on. It's a great place to get active/outdoor wear (& gear) and fun/decorative items for the house. This location usually has a bluegrass band playing out front too. This is in the heart of downtown and parking is difficult, just an FYI. Though there are garages nearby. read more

Mast General Stores are always worth stopping in. They have a great selection of outdoorsy clothes and stuffs and all kinds of cool gift items and home accessories. And of course there is the CANDY. My kids love to go in and they always pick up a few pieces of candy. While you may be tempted to buy a whole bag of candy keep in mind that you can just buy a couple pieces, the cashiers won't judge you. I managed to go to two Mast stores while on vacation in NC, and this one was my less favorite of the two, but still very good. I parked in a nearby garage (which turned out to be pretty inexpensive ($3 for a few hours we were downtown) otherwise you have metered street parking. I wasn't about to mess with parallel parking, but if you've got a talent for that go for it. read more

I could browse this store for days and still find something new every time. I found unique bike earrings at the one in Greenville and love that they have the old school candy to try out. There's a couple of these stores in North Carolina.They have everything from clothing to camping gear to soap and shampoo. I've only been twice, but both times it was insanely crowded. Everything is super expensive, too (example: I found a really ugly hat for $100!). I doubt I'll feel the need to visit the store again. read more
