I've done a good deal of shopping here and have always enjoyed the spread they have, but this is about the knife shop. I have a benchmade switchblade that needed servicing. It can only be worked on by benchmade and they can only get it from an authorized dealer. Mast is one of them. I dropped my knife to have it worked on and they kept me in the loop along the way. I knew when it shipped out, I knew when to expect it. Super solid people. Honestly, the five stars applies to the entire store and team but the knife shop did a great job. read more

I came here just to browse but was so excited to see my favorite childhood candy. This brought back memories and it's just as I remember it. They also have the viral Dubai chocolate bar. We stopped here while exploring a few places downtown and were really impressed! We didn't realize that Mast was a small regional chain of stores throughout North and South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. In total there are 10 locations. The first one began in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. This is a great place to bring out of town guests who may be looking for a piece of Winston-Salem merchandise to take home but Mast offers much, much more! As you make your way through the store there are both women's and men's clothing and accessories with well known labels such as Dkota, Life is Good, Lazy One, Columbia, Carhartt, North River, Lulu-B and Pendleton. We happened to be in when the fall/winter items were being heavily discounted and picked up several items at fifty percent off the sale price. We also noted they stock a wide range of sizes in both men's and women's from small to plus sizes which we appreciate. Next you come across the home goods area including items for your home and garden such as cookbooks, wind chimes, cutting boards, and more. The first floor is complete with old fashioned candy barrels and items for infants to school age children ranging from toys, books, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, etc. We then learned they have a basement as well which is accessible via either a large staircase or elevator. Downstairs you will find a wide selection of men's and women's shoes with brand names such as Dansko, Keen, Merrill, Acorn, Hey Dude, Reef, Acorn and Birkenstock. The basement also has an area with cases full of knives and other outdoor items such as hammocks, walking sticks, and just about anything you could want. Overall, this was a fun place to explore and we found several great deals as well. We learned they also do a spring/summer sale as well which we will need to keep in mind. I like the high quality products here and was excited to see that they now carry LLBean products. You will find whatever you might need here from clothing to home good to candy to toys. It's a fun find. You get to see a lot of the candy you grew up with and some candy available in other states. The store sells other knickknacks and clothing items as well. I wish it was better ventilated because they're is an old style woody smell to the store but I think it's part of the feel. It is a fantastic place. When I have visitors from out of town, I always take them there. They have all liked it and end up buying lots of stuff. Best shoe selection anywhere. Came for the old fashioned candy and left with a candle and greeting cards instead. The only reason I would not rate this place 5 stars is because it is a little pricey, however, there are a ton of sales that let you take 25-50% off select items. This store has clothing, candy, outdoor gear, and kitchen accessories (like cast iron skillets and wine glasses). I scored a locally made candle, on sale, for less than $10! My husband and I perused the candy, but ultimately decided it would be cheaper to grab similar candy at grocery store. We saw a lot of sour gummies, chocolate covered pretzels, and even some pez! The candy here is $10/lb. This store is massive and 2 levels. It never felt crowded. A nice little stop while in Winston-Salem. read more

I love Mast General Stores so while in Charlotte I managed to plot a detour to this store via Spencer for the NC Transportation Museum and Lexington for BBQ.  Mast General Store is reliable for friendly staff, quality men's and women's clothing, lovely displays and their candy barrel. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring both floors of this location. I would estimate that nearly 50% of the store is men's and women's clothing geared towards an active and outdoor lifestyle.  They sell brands like North Face, Toad&Co, Patagonia and Columbia.  They also have quality footwear from brands like Keen and Brooks. True to the roots of a general store, Mast General Store sells a little bit of everything.  Here are some of the things I enjoyed checking out at the Mast General Store in Winston-Salem: - Women's cute Joules rain boots - Farm-to-Feet, Darn Tough and Smartwool socks - Lodge cast iron pans - Patagonia fleece jackets for women - Columbia wind breakers for men - Moon Pies and cold bottles of Cheerwine - The candy barrel and especially the Tootsie fruit chews - Scented bars of soap - Fun toys and puzzles Mast also has plenty of stuff for outdoors fun like coolers, knives and such but I didn't explore that section downstairs too much. I absolutely love this store. The staff are all very helpful. This particular visit I was looking for a new pair of hiking boots. The salesman was very knowledgeable and suggested I try a different brand that I traditionally bought. As a hiker, this always makes me nervous because getting blisters or improper fit of a boot while hiking for a fees days is not fun. They did not have my size in either boot and he took the time to call about 8 stores to see if they had them. On the last call he struck gold. They arranged shipment of the boots to the store at no added cost and allowed me to try them on before placing any money on the purchase. About 5 days later they arrived, fit like a glove as he stated they would and highlighted a few differences that I immediately picked up on regarding comfort around the ankle. read more

This store is awesome! I love the outdoor gear combined with local goods. It definitely reminds me of a general store with various candy, foods, and general personal items. I love the bath goods, too! There is a great selection of Burt's Bee and Savannah Bee products, some items I've never seen before. The clothing selection includes men, women, and children hear. There's even dog gear! There are local goods, including Dewey's cookies and Foothills coffee. It was a very whimsical spot and a blend of Western meets New England prep. It's a neat store. Worth a stop if you are hanging out downtown around Trade Street. So the first floor is clothing, house items, and of course.....lots of freaking candy. Old fashion candy that is. Like a Cracker Barrel store on crack. Lower level is shoes, knives, sunglasses and camping gear. So the clothing section is high end. Not Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills high end but high end for me. I'm talking about $80 shirts, which is a little more than what this cheap ass normally pays for a shirt. They do have sales every now and then. So worth a stop. Fun place to visit. read more

Very cute old fashioned general store in downtown Winston Salem. My friend and I scanned the upstairs...from comfy tees, hats, mugs & collectibles, the store also has a nice section of weigh your own candy. Very fun concept and I had a good time picking things out like lemonheads, taffy, red licorice and mini Charleston Chew bars (please start carrying the full-size bars, they are the best and I cannot find them anywhere!) This place has just about everything you could hope to find in a general store and then some. It is deceptively big, with a lower level chock full of shoes and clothing items. Of course there's the novelty toys and loose candy section (with gloves for sanitary purposes), and they have unique jellies, honey, syrups, grit flour, etc. I ended up grabbing a moonshine jelly to try, and sure enough I actually did taste the moonshine! I think the Mast General Store is a neat spot if you are downtown and feel like browsing. I find the clothing section to be interesting with Vineyard Vines and other high end labels like that. It just seemed like an interesting mix of styles. I liked the little dog accessory section and bought a new food scoop for my pup. Obviously the candy is pretty neat. Just barrels and barrels of sugar treats! I can see how kids would go a bit crazy here with all that candy ready to be grabbed. I have heard great things about the jam but didn't try it out this trip. I can't see going back often but it seems like a great place to pick up a few holiday gifts. read more

It's 1903 and you need provisions - where else can you get sarsaparilla candies for the young whippersnappers and warm socks for grandma?

One of the biggest and craziest kitchen/general/life/general/candy stores I've been inside in a long time. Need an egg timer? An egg cooker? Cast-iron egg skillets? Egg-shaped refrigerator magnets? Egg drop soup mix? Gummy fried egg candies? This is your place. Ye olde tyme root beer barrel candy? Red hots? Lemon drops? Swedish fish? Those and 500 other candies are sold by weight. Little white ruffly things you put on the end bones of a rack of lamb? They've got those. Dried scallion dips? ("Just add yogurt!") Pancake mix? How about hunting knives? Beach sandals? Placemats? A "good morning" smiley face thing with which you can brand your toast? I didn't see it, but I'd bet my life that they have it. Lots of clothes, too. I'm exhausted even listing the first 20 things that come to my head... this was a fascinating way to kill a half hour while I was waiting to meet a friend. Bottom line: Different but awesome shopping experience that combines local flavor, vintage charm, and necessity into a must see store. Carve out a good chunk of time to walk around and explore this place as it is massive. I think you will enjoy looking around Mast General Store, I did! The Deets: I had an opportunity to experience the new Mast General Store location in Winston-Salem as my mother wanted to go in while we were out and about for Mother's Day. Wow, what a huge shopping area of all different kinds of offerings! If you have some time to kill and your walking shoes on, I recommend you check these guys out. There are just under 10 total Mast General Stores I think (around 8) open in the southeastern US and they are unique in concept. Not only do they give that general store type of feel but manage to show the local flavor of the location. The Winston-Salem one is no different. This store is in the downtown landmark location that used to house the popular Brown-Rogers-Dixson hardware store open there since 1928. For parking, it is handy that the parking deck behind it on Cherry St between 5th and 6th St connects directly to it with a walking bridge...pretty convenient and we were lucky to find it on our first try. Inside awaits clothing, food items, local items of interest, cooking and kitchen items, bottled colas in old time fridge units, big country barrels full of candies and sweets to enjoy, rocking chairs, outside gear, books, magnets, old time/retro toys and games, fresh popcorn to snack on, well..in short a smattering of shopping items to enjoy in an old style atmosphere. This place is HUGE! The bottom floor below is mainly concentrating on the clothing outfitters while the very long main floor houses most everything else. I took a few pics so you could get a feel for the place but they don't do it justice. The word "General Store" does not do this place justice. Yes, they do have candy and other goodies that are sold by the pound. However, they also have other well known brands for sell in this store such as Vineyard Vines, Life is Good and Southern Fried. Downstairs, they have a wide range of outdoor equipment and gear with many higher end outfitters like Patagonia, Marmot, Keen, Olu Kai etc. Remember, all the outdoor stuff is downstairs so don't overlook it. I did not expect to turn the corner and see a Mast Store! These places are everywhere! If you haven't been in one, it's worth the visit. If you have, then go back for your favorite things as they pretty much have the same merchandise. Cool toys and outdoor clothing brands like North Face and Columbia. Mast General sells clothes for hiking and outdoor adventures, shoes, souvenirs, candy and beauty products. The staff is very friendly and are very helpful. I recently visited the Winston-Salem location while downtown today at around 12:30 p.m. I walked in and passed two sales staff members at the front counter. Although one of them was engaged in a phone conversation, the other did not greet me upon entering the store. I made my way downstairs to browse their technical clothing. I must say, I was impressed by the cleanliness of their store and their merchandising of the product but unfortunately, the sales staff I encountered all failed to greet me or ask if I needed any help. I walked past a salesperson in the shoe section and three others in transit that all neglected to speak to me. They did not appear to be busy at all, seeming how I was one of two customers on the entire sales floor. I walked back upstairs to exit the store and passed the same two sales employees I encountered when I arrived and both allowed me to leave without thanking me for entering their store. I lingered around the counter for a minute or two looking at merchandise and still wasn't acknowledged. I won't go as far as to say I will never shop there again but I do put a lot of stock in customer service and today, I did not receive the best example of it. I know I could have asked for help if I needed it but I expect to be greeted at the very least. I am disappointed in my experience and will not easily give a great review to anyone asking for opinions of my time in this store. read more

WARNING: I only gave this two stars because they have some really unique things and nice variety in this store. I'm not originally from the south and being Hispanic, I've heard of how people down here can just stare at you or follow you in stores. Well if you want to experience that, then go on down to the General Store. We had a male staff member follow us from the front of the store allll the way to the back. We were approached by a staff member every few minutes. At first I liked that they were so attentive until I realized that I was being watched instead of trying to be helped. To the racist, stereotyping asshole workers in that store: YES I DID BUY THE TWO BANDANAS AND JAWBREAKER I HAD IN MY HAND! We stopped here on our little walking adventure downtown. The store is pretty big and gives that old feel with the creaky wooden floors. All of the clothes and everything else is very organized. They have a great selection of candy, outdoors clothes, things for the kitchen and many more. I wanted to go back to get my brothers some cool shirts that says NC on it but I may send a white friend down there instead so I don't feel so uncomfortable being my skin color in a store. People talk so much about southern hospitality and how northerners are so rude, I'll tell you one thing, no one would ever make you feel like you were not welcomed in a store up north. read more
