Masterpiece is a Chinese restaurant specializing in Sichuan cuisine that opened July 2014 on Buford Highway in Duluth. It's in a strip mall next to the QuikTrip at the corner of Buford Highway and N Berkeley Lake Road, not far from Pleasant Hill. The chef and owner of Masterpiece previously worked at Tasty China in Marietta. It's hard not to compare the two as the menu, food, service, and atmosphere are similar. Masterpiece could almost be considered the Tasty China of Gwinnett County (but not quite). The restaurant replaces the old Tsing Dao Chinese BBQ joint. The space is small, clean, and nondescript. Interior seating capacity is about 30-35 customers with no ambiance, not even background music, to speak of. You come here for the food, which is authentic and pretty good. This appears to be a "mom and pop" operation with the chef's wife assisting in the kitchen and she and her son waiting tables. If there's a communication barrier, there's another employee, Ginnefver, who is polite and helpful. I've worked with Ginnefver over the phone regarding reservations/menu and she's great. Like Tasty China during the infancy of the Peter Chang changeover, Masterpiece's menu is seriously lacking in the English descriptions department. Menu item examples read "Delicacies Mutton Pot" and "Three Fresh Delicious Soup." What? Unless you can read Chinese, you'll have to rely on servers' descriptions, do research beforehand, or pull up photos of dishes on your phone. Lovers of Sichuan cuisine will recognize Dan Dan Noodles and Chongqing Noodles. Other notable and adventurous dishes on the menu include Kong Po Kidney, Hunan Ox Tripe, Pig Intestine & Pork Blood Cake, and Coriander Fish Paste Soup. Prices are reasonable with most soups and appetizers each priced in the $6-8 range and most entrees each priced in the $8-15 range. Sharing and family-style are the best way to eat this food. Here's a list of what I've tried, using the menu's limited descriptions: Dumplings with Chili Sauce Sizzling Beef with Black Pepper Dry Fried String Beans Mixed Vegetable with Stir-Fried Tofu Kung Po Chicken Chicken with Dried Red Pepper Eggplant with Chili Powder and Pepper Ash Powder Smoked Fried Tea Duck Boiled Fish Fillet with Chili Stew Fried Lamb Cumin The Dumplings with Chili Sauce are steamed and filled with pork. The dumplings have a nice doughy exterior with adequate and savory fillings. The accompanying chili sauce appears to be red chili oil mixed with another brown sauce to make it a bit sweeter and saltier. Not bad. The Sizzling Beef with Black Pepper is a dish that's popular at Cantonese restaurants in part because of its presentation. The slices of steak are served still cooking (and sizzling) on a hot iron plate. Masterpiece's version is quite good, prepared with large mushrooms and topped with freshly chopped scallion. This is a good basic dish to order because most people will like it. The Dry Fried String Beans are decent. Soft and slightly crisp, the green beans are cooked with scallion and plenty of delicious roasted garlic. The Mixed Vegetable with Stir-Fried Tofu is a clean, healthy dish. The ingredients are served in a hot metal pot. Vegetables include wood-ear fungus, snow peas, Chinese cabbage (bok choy), mushrooms, carrots, red bell pepper, and bamboo shoots. Everything is fresh. I like the Kung Po Chicken here (a.k.a. Kung Pao Chicken) because the chef uses Sichuan peppers in his version. This means you get both the numbing and spicy effects ("ma" and "la" in Chinese). The chopped chicken and peppers come with jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, and red bell pepper, all tossed in a relatively light brown sauce. Both the Chicken with Dried Red Pepper and Eggplant with Chili Powder and Pepper Ash Powder are fried, spicy dishes prepared with copious amounts of red chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns. These are two of my favorite Sichuan dishes. They're intensely flavorful. If you order the chicken boneless, there's a $2 upcharge. The dry fried eggplant doesn't come with as much cilantro nor peppers as other places like Man Chun Hong, but the eggplant is still mighty tasty. The chili powder packs a solid punch. The Smoked Fried Tea Duck is unique and recommended. A generous, meaty portion of chopped duck is served bone-in with lots of crispy bits of fried skin. It's very good. This is different from the famous tea-smoked duck at Gu's BIstro which is prepared more like a traditional Cantonese-style roasted duck. The Boiled Fish Fillet with Chili Stew is made with what I believe are tilapia fillets. Oily and rich, this spicy soup comes with red peppers aplenty along with mung beans and cabbage. This is a fiery dish that spicy food fanatics will salivate over. Yet another recommendation is the Fried Lamb Cumin. The lamb meat is thinly sliced, tender, and flavorful. Strong cumin flavor. Plenty of cilantro, jalapeno, garlic, red peppers, and snow peas come with this dish. Service is OK. Pay in cash and save 10%. read more

I came here for a BuHi UYE especially because it was on my side of town on the Duluth side of Buford Highway :D. It's a small restaurant that specializes in Szechuan cuisine, which I learned is a Chinese cuisine from the city of Sichuan in Southwest China :D. They use a lot of garlic and red peppers. I guess I was expecting the dishes to look more artsy since their name was Masterpiece, but they looked like typical Chinese food dishes. They did have a couple of art works on the wall though from kids from the Art Academy nearby. They have no website, so you just have to rely on Yelp to figure out more information about this place :D. We had a table of 10 people and we all shared family style so I tried a lot of different dishes: dumplings, dumplings with chili oil, shrimp with garlic, don do pork, steamed fish, twice cooked pork, braised beef hot pot, spicy chicken, and mao pao tofu. Among them, my favorite seemed to be the "shrimp with garlic" and the "braised beef hot pot". I couldn't keep up with the spicy lovers, but we did get a couple of spicy dishes. There were a couple of spicy dishes which I liked, but couldn't eat that much of :P including the spicy chicken and mao pao tofu. The spicy chicken had this spice that you can't notice right away, but leaves a tingling sensation for a while after. I liked the taste of it at first, but needed lots of water after. The dumplings were pretty good too. I didn't need any sauce with my dumplings. I tried the don do pork for the first time and it was awesome! I would recommend it. It had two layers that both tasted awesome. It was soft, but chewy, and flavorful. The steamed fish was pretty spicy too and I didn't expect it to be. There was nothing there that I didn't like. The only thing was, I couldn't tell if the restaurant welcomed our big parties or were annoyed with us. The service was good, but at the end they seemed frustrated when we wanted to split the bills by table, because they put everything on one check at first. I noticed they didn't' have a computer to do the splitting and they had to do everything by calculator. They resolved the issue though and It was a pretty good deal in the end though. read more

This was our third stop on a self guided food tour for 12 people. Our reservations were at 9:30 and the table was ready when we arrived. The leader of our group asked to bring some of their most popular dishes and they were very tasty, as each of us enjoyed at least one or more of the offerings. I was very surprised at the use of cilantro on many of their dishes - an herb I don't expect to see in Chinese fare. The fried pork was a crowd favorite as were the green beans. We also sampled the fried eggplant, Kung Pao Chicken, house fried rice, tempura fried shrimp (eat it hot as it gets a bit chewy once it cools off too much), several other chicken, lamb and beef dishes. The portions are plentiful so expect to take home leftovers. Great place for a group. The dining area is very bright and simply decorated. Clean restaurant. Attentive staff. My only complaint is that I felt as if we were pushed out the door. Yes we arrived at 9:30 and they close at 10, but we ordered over a dozen dishes and I didn't think it necessary that they all but turned out the lights on us. I recently tried this place with a Chinese friend. Our table of people from all over the world deferred to the Chinese national originally from Nanjing for the picking of the dishes. She swears by the place and claims to be trying to come here as often as possible to make sure they stay in business. We had the Hunan style spicy pork which was thinly sliced and very very GOOD. It was tasty with small crispy celery, and habanero peppers. We also tried some kind of spicy beef stir fry, and it was SO flavorful, so good. The Chili Fish, we tried the second one on the menu, not the first one called Ash Chili Fish, was superb, the Sichuan peppercorns were more spicy then the habaneros and peppers in the other dishes. We tried one other fish dish with veggies, and tofu and it was good. The picture on the wall towards the top is a big Chinese competition that this chef has won! Think like 600 people, that is pretty cool. Most all of the entrees are $14.95-16.95 here. No lunch specials, this is a place to come for dinner. It is very high quality. When some friends recommended this Sichuan restaurant, I was afraid. I don't care for lip numbing food or even anything that could scorch my mouth on the way down. But I was assured that not everything was blistering hot so I went to get Dan Dan noodles. Needless to say, I found them perfect. Noodles had a good chew and the sauce was fabulous. I ventured out of my comfort zone and was delighted by their eggplant in garlic sauce and their blistered string beans with bits of pork. I was drinking a lot of water when I got to the Mapo Tofu but all of these dishes felt like this place should be the benchmark by which others could be judged. It is quite a trek from my house so I can't get up there a lot. It is located at 3940 Buford Hwy in Duluth. Closed on Tuesday's and Sunday. Pretty darn good! If my sources aren't incorrect, this is actually the chef from the original Tasty China which makes sense why the food is good. All my recommendations are spicy. I mean, you're at a Sichuan restaurant so what are you expecting. Recommendation: -Steam fish fillet with spicy chili. Ask for spicy (which is how it should be). One time they asked me, I said make it like it SHOULD be and it was amazing. The next time I went, I went with a group that had children in the mix, and they made it less spicy and it was not even comparably yummy. -Spicy Beef Tendons - very spicy and flavorful. -Spicy Intestine... This place is as incredible as they say. We went on a Sunday late afternoon, there were some diners, but not crowded. We were seated immediately. Ordered appetizing fish fillet, dry spiced eggplant (that they are famous for), kung pao tofu, cucumbers with garlic, and 3 each of purple and pumpkin dumplings. Everything was exceptional. We didn't expect the fish fillet to be soupy, so glad we didn't order another soup. The broth was very unique, and not fishy at all. It was light as pho, still had a nice kick to it from the peppercorns and jalapeno-tasting oil. The eggplant has been much praised before so I won't go into details, just that it was perfect. The tofu was the softest I have ever eaten. The dumplings were fine, but the chilli sauce to dip them in was delicious. The cucumber were perfect garlicky and a good palette clenser. Another great authentic Chinese restaurant in Atlanta. Even though the address says Buford Hwy, it is actually further down from the main strip. It is inside a shopping plaza with a few other shops. Some of my favorite dishes to order: - fried eggplant - Dong Po Pork (pork belly) - Zhong style wontons Service is ok. Not impressed. Came by pre-COVID and ordered $100+ of food that should have been easily executed by any authentic Szechuan restaurant. This included: hot and sour soup, fried eggplant, fried string beans, pig intestine, and more. I found that the actual "malai" profile is diminished from authentic Szechuan restaurant - they utilized a lot of the classic peppercorn without supporting it with anise, cinnamon, white pepper, etc. The flavor profile overall underwhelming, and did not leave a strong impression. My hot and sour soup was bland and barely had any saffron/bamboo shoot. More importantly, it arrived lukeworm. My string beans were limp and was overcooked. My pig intestine was acceptable but didn't pack a bunch that I typically get with other pig stomach/intestine dishes. I don't think Masterpiece is an authentic Szechuan restaurant - you'd be fooling yourself if you thought it was - it's more of a westernized/southern interpretation with a focus more on fried foods with a diminished malai profile. I'm confused how it won any James Beard award when you compare it to northeast restaurants (I guess the fact that it was regional and there aren't much competition in the southeast makes sense). Come to NYC or China, and you'll notice the stark contrast. Overall: Do not recommend. Flavor profile is weak. Take your money to La Mei Zhi .. I *REALLY* hate making this review. I so wanted things to be like they once were. In a nutshell, they are not. I tried to get a better description of Shredded Beef with Wild Pepper. What did she tell me? "It is beef that is, you know..." "Shredded?" "Yes. And the pepper is, uh..." "Wild pepper?" "Yes." "You just gave me the same words from the name in the menu. What else is in it?" "I think it has--" "You're not sure?" "Let me go check." So she leaves... TWELVE MINUTES LATER she reappears, but not paying us any attention, so I call her over. "We don't have pictures of it." Good god... So I order Kung Pao Chicken, extra spicy. My wife orders Dan Dan Noodles and the fish and tofu hot pot. The Dan Dan Noodles arrive, and there is -- and this is NO exaggeration -- only 1 tablespoon of grayish, unflavored meat on the side! I ask her to dig through it to find the rest, but there is nothing more. I call over the least attentive waitress in all the land and show her, asking, "Is that all the meat that comes with Dan Dan Noodles?" She looks at me like I've just asked if water is wet: "Yeah." No sauce, no flavoring, nothing but commercially-made dried flat noodles, rehydrated in boiling water, thrown into a bowl and topped with one tablespoon of the worst flavorless meat ever committed to an Asian noodle dish. The kung pao chicken was not spicy at all, and the "sauce" was brown sugar and water, pooled in the bottom of the serving plate with a little bit of chili crisp thrown in. It was the same stuff that cheap American-Asian restaurants use on their diabetes-inducing Mongolian Beef. I told her I didn't like it at all, twice. The second time she told me that other people liked it. Oh, so I guess my opinion doesn't matter. "Maybe for American palates, but--" "No! No! ChiNESE!" Oh, so then it's only AMERICAN palates that don't matter, eh?! The bill came to $44.78, I tipped $9.00 (even bad waitresses need a wage), so the total came to $53.78 for bad food, most of which was taken home because we were hoping to eat at least some of it later (my wife's expensive hot pot is still in the fridge). We stopped by McDonald's on the way home so I could at least have something to eat for dinner. You know what they're going to do *IF* they read this review? Not a damn thing. And you know it. While the restaurant is very casual, I found the food to be excellent. I could have made a meal on the dumplings in chili sauce and had to fight the urge to eat the chili sauce like a soup (although I do confess to several bites of it over rice). The flavor was incredible - the heat well balanced with the other spices and seasonings. The green beans were also good - very flavorful. They also provided a needed green vegetable at our table. The double cooked pork was good, but I don't know that it would make my order list again. I might instead opt for the chicken with hot pepper or mapodofu, both of which I am eager to return and try. The fried eggplant was also excellent. Perfectly fried without being heavy. I am glad I ate it last because I fear the heat's tingle and numbing effect may have diluted the flavors of the other foods. This spot is a win for me. I don't know where from to start! I had such high expectations with this place as my husband informed that Masterpiece in Duluth owns a James Beard award for their Sichuan cuisine. I myself make some of the great chinese dishes. I really had high hopes from these guys in terms of Sichuan cuisine. Beware!!!!! don't go by the ratings or the appearance of the food. we went for pick-up. They are not cheap. veg dishes are for $13-$15. Our order included a crispy fried pork, stir-fried tea smoked duck, Zhongzhong dumplings and a small portion of noodles. The food had literally no taste; there was no significant flavor, let alone spice. They had given us a single chili oil sauce to go with everything. Somehow could swallow the food with that. Crispy fried pork was so-so, I mean edible :( But I believe they had added some soda bicarb in the pork coating to make it crispy, my husband couldn't take it in his mouth. the portions were just ok for the price (well, I don't even need more of that ugly food). Now the duck! from the description, it sounded like a very flavorful dish, however, it was again fried and coated in all-purpose flour, with absolute no sauce to toss it, no tea-smoke, nothing. Additionally, it smelt foul, probably because they had not removed the duck skin!!!!! yakkkkkkkkk. It was foul and gross! Not sure I can properly review Masterpiece but since it is unlikely I will be going back, this may be my only chance. I am friends with a large community of foodies that swear by this place and it came highly recommended. For this reason I decided to grab some friends and drive 45mins to Duluth to try it out. We went specifically for the Pork Belly, the Purple Potato Dumplings and the Pumpkin Dumplings. So what ended up happening? They were OUT of all three things on a weekday afternoon at 12pm....I was so absolutely disapointed to have come all that way to not eat the food I had come for and also because all the alternative food we got: Dan Dan Noodles, Garlic Eggplant and Dried Red Pepper Chicken were all very sub-par. Needless to say, my friends were not all that impressed either. Not sure I will be driving all the way back up to give it another shot. We went on a Wednesday night and it was thankfully dead because I've heard the wait gets crazy on weekends. This is the perfect Chinese restaurant to try stuff out of your comfort zone because it's pretty much guaranteed to be delicious. We ordered some kind of spicy and sour noodle dish that tasted like nothing I've ever had before (in a great way) and followed that up with mapo tofu (spicy and fantastic) and their sizzling beef with black pepper - by far the best meat dish I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant. It comes sizzling hot like a fajita plate and I'm not sure what they put in the sauce but it made even the mushroom and onions that came with the meat irresistible. And I mean to the point where we couldn't put our chopsticks down even after we were all stuffed. This is a great place to come back to over and over again because their menu is so extensive and it helps to come with somebody who's familiar with Szechuan food so they can give you pointers as to what's authentic or worth trying. read more

I've had the pleasure of checking this place twice now, and it's been a great one thus far. First time we came in as a group, which is the best way to check it out, they are a "family style" type restaurant, meaning that food portions can be shared within the table. So from that point on, i was looking for an excuse to go back, and a friend of mine hit me up about lunch in the area and suggested it, so of course I said yes and came by. We ordered a couple things, like Dong Po Pork (so good), do yourself a favor an order this delicious pork belly over this sauce that its so good that I can't explain what its made up, just great. I had the opportunity to dine at Masterpiece with some friends who regularly visit last week. I knew it was a drive from Atlanta, but WOW. We picked the wrong day to come out for my first visit - it took over an hour to go just over 20 miles. The lucky side effect was that I was so hungry by the time we arrived, I was ready and willing to try just about anything that was put in front of me. Masterpiece is located in a small strip mall on Buford Highway in Duluth. It's consistently been rated one of the best Chinese (specifically Sichan / Szechaun) restaurants in town for a number of years. There's shared parking and a small number of tables of varying sizes. Several of the larger tables have lazy susans in the center. I have only been here the once (so far!) but would recommend dining with a a group as everything is served family-style. As I mentioned, my friends had visited Masterpiece several times before and they did all the ordering for us. We wound up with: - Szechuan-Style Hot & Sour Soup - Fried Crispy Pork - Tea Smoked Duck - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - Dry Fried String Beans - Sauteed Chinese Cabbage - Spicy Shredded Beef I really enjoyed the hot and sour soup, but my friends told me it's something they regularly order and the recipe seems inconsistent. While the soup we were served had that lovely thick consistency we all enjoyed, they recalled that at other times it was much more broth-y, more like a consomme, and the flavor would change along with the consistency. The fried crispy pork was definitely the fan favorite. For a table of five we ordered two servings, and not a bite was left. Highly recommended! Apparently the tea smoked duck is not always available, and it seems we got lucky. The portion is quite large; it's probably at least a quarter of a duck (if not more), sliced into large pieces and served on a platter with lemon slices. The fatty duck skin has the most appealing shiny glazed look and texture. It's savory without being gamey. Delicious! The dark horse in the running was the eggplant in garlic sauce. Eggplant can go a number of ways, and not everyone appreciates a mushier texture out of their food. I was absolutely shocked at how wonderful this dish was. Savory and hot but not overwhelmingly spicy - this one is a yes! The dry fried string beans, again, were surprisingly delicious. Who knew green beans could be so textured and tasty? Another plate that left the table scraped clean. The only two dishes I wasn't thrilled by (and this was me alone, as the rest of my friends picked these dishes clean as well) were the Chinese Cabbage and the Shredded Beef. The cabbage was just OK for me; honestly, it was just sauteed cabbage. The beef was similarly unimpressive, especially after the impressive flavors of the other meat dishes. Went on a weekday with family to try this place out since the reviews are so good. We ordered a variety of dishes. The green beans were good. The salt and pepper tofu was very good. Fried rice was ok. Kung Pao Chicken was ok. The sizzling beef with pepper was the worst thing i ever ate. For some reason it smelled like fish. Yes, very odd smell. When we all tasted it we had to spit it out. It was that bad. It tasted sour. I am thinking it was either bad meat or they had it made and just warmed it up to order. Either way it was so bad I have to give this place a 1 star. It has posters of it being a James Beard nominated restaurant...give me a break. They made a mistake on that one. ServIce is mediocre. Food came out quickly-it was a slow weekday. The servers didn't check to see if we needed anything. They came by a few times but just so we can order more food items. I still have the bad after taste from that meat. It was that bad. I never tasted anything that horrible in my life. I am pretty sure it was rotten meat. I will never go back here again. If we weren't served that horrible dish i would have given this place at least 3 stars but that Sizzling Beef with Pepper (by the way it wasnt brought to us sizzling) was the nail in the coffIn for me. Fantastic food! I had sought recommendations on ATL Asian Eats Facebook page because a friend has dietary restrictions. We told our waitress and she said they can cook with gluten free soy sauce. My friend also doesn't eat dairy so the waitress gave us some good recommendations. My friend eats spicier than I do. We got the fish soup, the garlic eggplant and boiled fish in chili peppers. I had to order xiao long bau because I was told these were the best. My friend can't eat them and the waitress let me know. I told her they were for-me to try. These dishes were great! Lots of flavor and things my friend could enjoy. I will be back! I'm not too far away, so I think this will be new place to get take out or dine in. read more

This is my most favorite Chinese restaurant in town. I am Chinese Chinese (in another word, grew up in China ：）) and this is the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Atlanta. If you like Sichuan (Szechuan) or Hunan cuisines, this is definitely the place to go. I ate here several times and it never disappointed me. Wish it is close to me so I can come here more often! This time we ordered dried eggplant in chili powder (干煸）, Mapo Toufu (麻婆豆腐），stir fried pork with peppers (forgot the English name but the Chinese name is 农家小炒肉），boil fish fillet with chili stew (水煮鱼） Kou Shui Chicken， broiled Chicken Gizzards (火燎胗花），stir fried cabbage, and braised beef (红烧牛腩）。We finished all of them! There are lots of hot peppers in most of the dishes so yes Spicy and Hot. But those are their specialties! If you like Cantonese food HongKong style, this won't be the place to go. I was not that hopeful when I first visited Masterpiece with my family. Given the special dislike of my kids towards restaurant food, and finding no better options to eat on the menu, we had just walked out without eating anything at this place when we first visited. However, I gave it a second try, just by myself, without kids, the next time. And to my surprise, this place turned out to be far beyond my expectation. There are really very limited Authentic Chinese (Sichuan) restaurants around Metro Atlanta area. Masterpiece stands out among them. The restaurant has great ambiance, cordial staff and responsive service. This place is usually too crowded over the weekends. The first time when I had visited, I should had looked at their menu pics from Yelp. Then, we had no clue what this restaurant serves, the menu card had no pictures to imagine what we can expect. The second time when I went, I ordered what looked spicy and yummy from the pictures in yelp and I had no regret. I ordered pickled cabbage soup with fish fillet and Onion spicy dry pot chicken. Both the dishes were hot, spicy and so delicious that I could not resist devouring till I finished them. Let me warn you, the spicy onion dry chicken is really spicy by American standard and will blow up your ears if you are not used to such spice. While leaving, I got a chance to talk to the Chef of the Restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to know that he is a friend of Peter Chang, of "Peter Chang's" restaurant chain. read more

I've had this one on my list for a while, but when craving something Asian after a Memorial Day weekend of American food, we chose Masterpiece to break that fast. We ordered way too many dishes for 2 people - but unfortunately, that's the way it goes when it comes to eating with a Yelper at a family style Chinese restaurant. FOOD Dan Dan Noodles - pre-mixed, they looked like... bland plain noodles. But once the sauce and toppings are tossed in thoroughly, it's pretty tasty. Chili? Fish Fillets - not sure how to translate this into English, but this spicy Szechuan style fish is a classic must order. The mouth numbing spice is iconic. Definitely gave my acid reflux a run for its money a little later. Dry Fried String Beans - another classic dish we had to order. It was the only totally mild dish we ordered, and I couldn't get enough. I love this style of Chinese string beans! Fried Eggplant - our final classic Szechuan style dish. It looks pretty bland upon first glance... and second glance. But it's pretty salty, spicy and tasty. The hot and crispy eggplant are a textbook version of how a traditional Szechuan fried eggplant should be - just wish these came out first so I wasn't full already by the time we got this dish (last). Overall, a solid Szechuan restaurant. It isn't what Gu's used be on Buford Highway or the old school Tasty China. But Masterpiece can be that benchmark choice when trying to find something new to replace what I miss in Atlanta: spicy Szechuan cuisine! read more

Everyone raves about this place and it's been featured in several articles, so I was excited to try this place out. I went in on a Sunday night after being on my feet all day serving others. I like to spend my tips on my family and have a little relaxation and fun myself by going out to eat. When we got there we waited for them to seat us so as not to presume we can just walk in and seat ourselves, being that it was our first time. We waited to be seated, we waited for them to set the table, we waited for them to bring us menus, we waited for them to take our drink order, we waited and watched as others strolled on in and sat and their orders were taken before ours. We watched as other tables had their orders taken and brought their food, all the while we still had not been considered to be brought a menu. I had to get up and go to the counter to get menus. By now, you're probably asking yourself why I didn't just get up and leave. Because, silly! This is suppose to be the best authentic Chinese food in Atlanta! It must be worth it! Everything, one thing at a time and totally unaware of what we needed or if we had been helped or if our drink or our food order was taken. Each time they visited our table, it was like they were confused or indifferent. I was already tired from the day, but this made me even more tired. Eventually, we got food. So I now officially know that I'm not a big fan of szechuan style chinese-- way too much garlic, spice, peppercorn and oil. Thinking about the food makes my stomach do somersaults! I give this place 2 stars not just based on the quality of the food, but mainly for the inattentive and rude service. I don't care how many tables are seated, there needs to be a certain standard of respect for the patrons. If the restaurant is short staffed, they should limit how many tables are seated at a time. We had issue after issue with our order for a party of 6. No apologies or correction was made for the poor service we experienced. The pork belly everyone keeps talking about is the dong po pork F6 5. Mao's braised pork is different from the pork belly in #4, as it comes with a broth/sauce 6. Dan Dan Noodles are flat, not round... Opinions: 1. Very salty. If you have heart failure, don't come here 2. Spicy. I was sweaty. My mouth was numb. But it was tolerable 3. Good, but not mind blowing. But with exception of the pork belly, you could probably just go to Chinatown in Chamblee and call it a day, unless you live near Duluth. 4. No tea when you sit down...?! Atlanta Magazine People's Choice for best Chinese food in the city. I totally agree, although it is not your traditional meat & veggie entree restaurant (no Mongolian beef or moo goo gai pan). Entree are large and meant to be shared. Meat dishes (pork, seafood, beef, duck, etc.) are stand alone as are vegetable dishes. The fried eggplant with pepper ash powder is a "must try". The pepper ratings along side the menu items are for real and if you want to dial up the heat, this is the place for you. read more
