I was actually pretty excited to try this place since it's close to home and someone I know recommended it to me. When we walked in, I saw a few dishes being served to other tables and they looked really good, so I had pretty high expectations. There were only two of us, so we decided to order one dish to share and went with the Peking duck. Unfortunately, it was pretty disappointing. Peking duck is supposed to have that crispy, crackly skin with warm, tender meat inside, but this tasted and looked more like regular roast duck. The skin was chewy instead of crispy, and the meat inside was actually cold. The Peking duck was $54 for a whole duck, while their regular roast duck on the menu was around $35. For that price difference, I was expecting an actual Peking duck experience, especially the crispy skin. Maybe their other dishes are better because the food I saw at the other tables looked pretty good, but I definitely wouldn't order the Peking duck again. read more

The food here is so good. The Peking duck was one of the best I've had, crispy skin, juicy meat, and so satisfying. The stir fry was flavorful. The clams weren't the freshest, but the flavor was still there. Rice noodles were fine, nothing crazy. The snow pea tips were a standout with perfect texture and clean flavor. The duck soup came as the second course of the Peking duck and was warm and comforting. They even gave us Chinese pumpkin cake for dessert, which was a nice surprise. Vibe wise, it's pretty simple. I had heard from friends that Taste of China offers Fujian-style home cooking that suits Fujian tastes, so we decided to give it a try for my mom's birthday on Sunday. We started with the Fuqi Feipian, which was on the salty side but otherwise pretty standard. The Seafood Shark Fin Soup was surprisingly bland, as if no salt had been added. We had to add red vinegar just to bring out some flavor, and it could have used more white pepper and seasoning overall. Next was the stir-fried squid with vegetables (I forgot the exact name). It included scallions, taro strips, and red peppers, but the taste was fairly average. The sweet and sour pork (Lychee Pork) was close to the Fujian-style flavor I'm familiar with, though the sauce was a bit light and not as tangy or sweet as expected. We also ordered the seafood fried rice noodles, which were very mild in flavor and lacked wok hei. It felt under-seasoned, almost like the seasoning was forgotten again. One standout dish was the red fermented rice pork intestines with snow peas, a classic Fujian specialty. The red fermented rice flavor really came through, and this dish was definitely worth supporting. The crispy roast duck was another highlight--crispy skin, juicy meat, and served with steamed pancakes, shredded cucumber, scallions, and sweet bean sauce. Very satisfying in every bite. The restaurant also offered complimentary orange slices at the end, which was a nice touch. Portions were generous, prices were reasonable, and overall it was a fairly filling meal. Went yesterday afternoon for late lunch. Ordered 4 dishes to share - Braised Pork Belly, Hong Kong style lobster, Szechuan Chicken, & Beef and Vermicelli in hot pot. The portion sizes are big so we had leftovers to take home. Favorites were the lobster and chicken because they were so flavorful. The beef and vermicelli was okay not what we were expecting. This place is pretty tasty and it's a little crowded when they're packed because the place has a lot more tables than it has space for I feel? But it's rare it's 100% packed, plus they do take reservations if you call. Here are some of my recommendations: Cold Mixed Bamboo Salad We'll start with an easy one. A refreshing one! This dish is a refreshing dish - made with bamboo shoots, black beans, dried red peppers and more! This is one of my favorites - the bamboo shoots are very tender and there's a slight crunchiness to it! Eggplant with Chicken and Salted Fish in Hot Pot This dish is also often times called Eggplant Clay Pot in a lot of Cantonese restaurants - it's one of my favorite dishes. It's super flavorful! The only thing is it's a little more salty here than at other restaurants I've been to. But if you don't mind - go on ahead - the flavor is great! Sliced Beef in Spicy Chili Oil One of my favorite dishes ever is this Sichuan dish - there's Sliced Beef in Spicy Chili Oil or Sliced Fish in Spicy Chili Oil! We went with the beef this time. String Bean with Minced Pork A traditional Chinese dish is this veggie side dish - string/green beans with minced pork. They did ask us if we were okay with the minced pork which made me feel like if we said no, they could make customizations btw. Roasted Crispy Duck (Half) You can order this as a WHOLE roast duck also - however, I went with just my mom and we were definitely not even going to finish the half duck, so that's what we went with. read more

Tucked away in the corner of a not super well lit plaza located away from the main thoroughfare of Pleasant Hill Road, it's really easy to drive by and completely miss this restaurant. However, if you do manage to find it, they actually serve up some pretty good eats. The overall ambiance of the restaurant is actually better than how it looks on the outside. Large family style tables perfect for sharing a meal. I decided to order some of their more unique menu items like the Pumpkin in Salted Egg and the Mountain Yam and Mushroom Clay Pot. Both were excellent dishes. The fried pumpkin was crispy on the outside with that salty egg dusted on top while the inside was soft and fluffy. The mountain yam and mushrooms had excellent spice and is excellent with white rice. However, just know that like many Chinese restaurants, service is definitely not a strong suit. I went around 8pm and there was maybe one other table in the restaurant. But service was incredibly slow and dishes didn't start getting to our table until almost 40 minutes after ordering. So I guess if you have time to burn, you won't mind being here at all. But overall, it's still a pretty good restaurant. Definitely wouldn't mind coming back to try more items. This place is legit the best Chinese food I've ever had. I think it edges out Canton Cooks in my list of favorites -- which is impressively hard to do. I won't bother carrying you through all of the dishes. There wasn't anything I tried that I didn't think was great -- ranging from authentic to American Chinese. All so good. I will add that the jajangmyeon here is the best I've had. You know when you get the kind with running brown-colored sauce? That is not what is happening here. It was straight-up amazing. Taste of China was a random treasure find when the husband and I were looking for a place to grab dinner while visiting Spaland. The restaurant sits in the same quiet complex with a handful of other Asian restaurants, and I do want to emphasize the word 'quiet'. Most of the eateries here - Taste of China included - have their windows layered with a reflective, one-way sheen and there are no loud decorations or banners that try to lure hungry passersby through the door. Still, we ventured in, a fateful choice that led to a most delightful dinner. Before we even ordered, our waitress brought two small bowls of free apps - deep fried and salted peanuts, along with some pickled radish. As we munched happily through these bowls, we poked around the menu a little blindly, jabbing a hopeful finger to our waitress at things that looked promising. In the end, we settled on the mapo tofu and sizzling black pepper beef. The mapo tofu was a satisfyingly spicy and saucy, rich with soft tofu cubes and ground pork and finishing with the telltale numbing sensation of Szechuan peppercorns. It was a wonderful counterpoint to the slightly sweet and unctuous sizzling beef, which was a revelation of an entree. It arrived on a hot cast iron platter, with beef pieces so tender that our teeth sank effortlessly into them. Every table's order is accompanied by a generous order of rice that we didn't think we would finish, but by the end of the meal, there wasn't a single grain left. Service throughout our meal was prompt and efficient without any kind of hovering. We were seated at one of few small tables in the restaurant, because most of the interior is dedicated to larger round tables with lazy Susans, presumably for family dinner affairs. I won't deign to pretend expertise on Chinese cuisine, but I know when my taste buds are happy, and they were certainly dancing with delight after our chance meal here. I'm always a little hesitant to try restaurants with the word "China" in it. But obviously I'm a little biased (iykyk). But we decided to take a chance since Jusgo food court was closed on Chinese New Year and our next option was Taste of China. And it's become our Chinese family style meal of choice over the past year. I've been many times now and can safely say it's a solid Chinese restaurant in Atlanta, given our limited legit options. Crab & Fish Maw soup is a must. Don't be deterred by what "maw" is. If you're Chinese, you drink up that delicacy and don't think twice. Peking Duck is also a must. You can order duck two ways - Peking Duck with steamed buns or crispy roast duck (similar to what you would get at a Chinese BBQ storefront). I wish you could order a half order of Peking Duck in the same way as a half order of crispy roast duck, but it's worth ordering even with a smaller group - take the rest home as leftovers! I recently also was a huge fan of the sautéed clams in black bean sauce. Not a single grain of sand was to be found when biting into each piece of meat, which is a definite no-no for the rest of the platter when it's usually found. And the flavors were on point. Pro tip: if it's your birthday, let them know and they will bring you complimentary peach buns (red bean filling)! There are so many other dishes to choose from and the menu has gorgeous pictures to help you choose what you're looking for. Service is lackluster. I think the servers are a bit lazy and there aren't enough servers on the weekends. I've gotten pretty rude attitudes and responses from various servers, which was embarrassing in front of my parents. Definitely don't recommend this restaurant for their hospitality, that's for sure. I also don't recommend a meal here if you're in a rush or looking for a quick bite, especially on a weekend. There are usually multiple bigger groups here on the weekend and that can cause the kitchen to get super backed up, since they seem to cook in a first in, first out order. Overall, Taste of China is my go-to Chinese family style dinner restaurant in Duluth, particularly for Peking Duck. read more

Pretty good, the kitchen knows what they are doing and does cater to different "tastes" of Chinese provinces. Almost a hidden gem per the ATL standard, but a candidate to be a regular for avid Chinese cuisine fans who had 'em better at other, bigger Chinese community locations including the mainland of course. Should be a go-to destination for that random yet urgent craving for something that feels a bit more authentic. Everything pretty decent; good kousuji, meaty clams and fresh veggies for stir-fries, braised tofu to name a few. Pork dishes are not porky and controlled. The interior of the restaurant looked cleaner than most Chinese restaurants I've been to, which is reassuring during these unprecedented times of pandemic. Even though this restaurant looked empty after peering through the windows, I was willing to give place a try because I was craving for peking duck. Appetizers: The cold mixed bamboo shoots had nice flavors with a kick of spiciness, which I'd recommend. Also you can't go wrong with a simple cucumber salad either. Entrees: The presentation of the Peking duck was nice. The cook on the duck wasn't great since the meat was too soft. However, the skin was crispy which is quintessential for Peking duck. I was disappointed when the Peking duck was served with bao because authentic Peking duck is supposed to be serve with spring-pancake. The stir fried flat noodles with beef was disappointing. There was hardly any flavor in there, despite looking promising. The side of stir fry bok choy was very oily and unappetizing. The clams with black bean sauce had good flavor, but the clams were small and had very little meat. I wouldn't recommend it given how pricey that dish was. Service was good and attentive, which is expected for an empty dining. Food came out quickly. This restaurant has a big menu, but if they refined their dishes, I think this restaurant has a lot of potential. read more

1 of the most impressive, true, and authentically taste of the genuine Chinese flavors that is rare to find anymore. You are quite lucky, Duluth!! What really impressed us the most is how engaged the Head Chef of the restaurant was while we were there. He came and asked us if we wanted to try the fresh oysters & tofu dish that he just put together. All of the oysters were large & plump in size, with the silken tofu in a light, brown sauce. Then five other dishes later, came MY FAVORITE dish, the Jajangmyeon, OMG......., it was SOOOOOOOOOOO DELIGHTFUL!! Sorry to all other Korean restaurants that I've eaten in the past with this dish, the Taste of China have gotten you beaten. What really impressed me was how the sauce were all stuck to the noodles, not saucy nor runny like all others in the past 36 years of my adult life of eating Jajangmyeon. Plus, what I love most was how you can practically taste that wok which he cooked it in, YES!!! Big time kudos to you, Chef! Came here for a weeknight dinner with a big group. We had a reservation so there was no wait. We had over 10 people in our group and they sat us in two separate tables next to each other. The space is big, open, and clean. Taste of China is an authentic Chinese restaurant. They serve food family style. Our group ordered several dishes from soup, soup buns, to eggplant, duck, and more. We ordered plenty of food and they were all consumed. The portions are generous and the food seasoned well. No complaints from anyone. The service was great. Will definitely return! read more

I'm surprised I hadn't been to this restaurant until recently. This was a fantastic dining experience and based on my recent experience, this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Atlanta area. We went here for Chinese New Year. One special thing about Taste of China is that it truly is a taste of China. Unlike many restaurants in the area that specialize in a specific region, typically Sichuan, Taste of China has great dishes from regions all over China. I would highly recommend the Peking Duck! I've been looking for good Peking duck for a while, and I was satisfied with how well they made it. Not as good as some places in China, but it definitely fulfilled my craving. The portion for the snow pea tips and cold garlic cucumber was also very large and made me excited to eat vegetables. The crab fried rice was fresh. We saw them take the live crab out of the tank, go to the kitchen, and come back with a fresh plate of crab fried rice. The live fish was also fresh and delicious. Most of the seating consists of large tables meant for sharing food with larger group sizes. For 13 people, the price was about $500-$600. Their steamed fish dish (I forgot to photograph) has some heat to it and tastes delicious. I also loved the steamed cabbage dish (forgot to take a photo, too). We came here after 9:30 on Friday after another restaurant refused to seat us (and got lucky). The food: (4.7/5) For appetizer we had the shaved tofu which was very interesting and complex in texture and flavor. Would recommend! 5/5 We got the spicy fried chicken (5/5) which was very crunchy outside and tender inside. Good mix of vegetables. The spicy cumin lamb (which is not lamb but actually beef) was crispy and tasty but not supper spicy or cumin-y. Sounds evident but It does taste like beef and not lamb be advised! 4/5 The green beans with pork were scrumptious and so tasty! Perfectly cooked and flavored 5/5. But we called ahead for a reservation for Peking duck. We confirmed for Peking duck. It was Christmas, after all. And when we got here, no Peking duck. A few other items that appear on their website aren't in the menu either. No soup dumplings, for example, despite a picture. And the service was absolutely terrible. Slow, disjointed, unorganized. It took forever just to get water, drink service continued to be slow and it never improved. Food was very slow and came out in no logical order at all. The only instance of attentive service was when I asked for the check. It really doesn't matter how good a dish is. Overall 5/5: This place is my family's new spot for traditional family-style Chinese food. It's open late and so convenient for my family that gets out of work late. It is tucked in a little plaza hidden away, so you definitely have to keep your eye out for it. Food 5/5: Everything is piping hot when it comes out. Taste of China is an authentic Chinese restaurant at a small shopping plaza behind Walmart in Duluth. Menu selections are wide, though dish qualities are not consistent. Services are extremely slow and rude. Our wait time is 45 mins to sit down at a table and another hour for our food to arrive after we submit our orders. I took two stars off from rude service and inconsistent dishes. Plenty of free parking is available in front of the restaurant. Due to Mother's Day, we are supposed to receive a free appetizer. The servers promised multiple times to bring over the cold noodles, but ended up forgetting. How disappointing! Of the four dishes we ordered, we recommend two dishes (1. House Special Stir Fry and 2. Steamed Scallops), while wouldn't recommend the two others (1. Steamed egg custard with razor claims and 2. Qioangshan Tofu). The House Special is highly recommended. It includes chives, fried squid, shrimps and peanuts. The steamed scallops is served with vermicelli, which is very flavorful as well. Taste of China in fact offers some solid dishes. The reviews that complain about the prices at Taste of China simply do not understand what it costs these days for a restaurant to consistently turn out top-quality food using top-quality ingredients. You go to McDonald's, you pay X for a double cheeseburger, you eat it, and it fills some space in your stomach without too much complaint from your palate. You go to In-n-Out Burger, you pay 2X for a double cheeseburger that tastes 4 times better, you eat it, it truly satisfies your palate, and it gives you something to recommend when your mates ask "Where should we go to eat?" So why would anyone in their right mind go to a prestige burger joint and pay 5X for a truly great double cheeseburger that is 20 times better than McDonalds? Simple: BECAUSE IT'S TWENTY TIMES BETTER THAN MCDONALD'S! If you've spent your entire life eating McDonald's then that $17 double cheeseburger will give you Sticker Shock, but it's not like you didn't see the price before you ordered it, right? That doesn't seem to be the case with some reviewers of Taste of China. The ones who complain the loudest didn't do the Napkin Math before ordering, or they didn't ask what the Market Price was that day. That isn't the restaurant's fault, it's theirs. And as for the quality of the food, NEVER listen to ANY review based on takeaway (take out) orders, because all takeaway food is ruined by the time it reaches the hapless customer. Trapped high-humidity heat overcooks the food, condensation of that vapor drips off the cover into the food and waters it down, it turns Crispy into Soggy and Crunchy into Squish, it waters down the delicious glazes so they drip off the food into the bottom of the container into a watery soup, and it is not the optimum temperature as served in the restaurant. Enough said about misguided reviewers. And now for a NOT misguided reviewer who has been to Taste of China many times. Taste of China is a lovely restaurant with excellent food that is reasonably-priced within its elevated culinary tranche. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for "the Chinese restaurant where mostly Chinese people go" to share a feast with their friends, family, and colleagues. The table next to us had 13 very pleased diners with many, many dishes -- or emptied serving platters, I should say. The rest of the restaurant patrons were Chinese, too. We were the only white, black, and biracial people there. So many indicators of excellence! My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the Xiangtan Spicy Stir-Fried Pork and the Cumin Beef. My wife, who runs screaming if you even so much as show her a picture of a hot pepper, thoroughly enjoyed the Sweet and Sour Pork Chops and the Mongolian Beef, as did my son and I, even though it didn't have the hot spices we love. We all shared the Fried Pork Dumplings, which were perfectly crisp and the fillings savory and aromatic with the perfect amount of salt. And a special note about the rice. In most Chinese restaurants, the person who draws the Short Straw has to make the rice, which is an eye-rolling burden to them: in the big rice cooker dump in rice to about here, pour in water to about there, close the lid, push the button. What comes out is, undeniably, rice. It's just poorly made rice. The rice at Taste of China was cared for. Someone made it with a precise process and a choice rice that was washed just the right amount, carefully measured, and cooked with the exact amount of water specified in their recipe. I can taste the evidence of it consistently every time I dine there. They really do care about the quality of the rice they cook and serve. It's the perfect balance of separate grains, just the right amount of adherence to each other to make eating with chopsticks easy, and a texture that isn't soggy like it is in every other Chinese restaurant. $110 plus a $28 tip for a $138 total, for a meal and service that was a pure delight on my 63rd birthday. Taste of China is now our go-to default restaurant when we either want Chinese food or can't decide what kind of food we want. That way we are guaranteed a delicious meal every time. Thank you, Master Chef, for the best quality food. You have proved that talent and experience have great worth, and you stand out from the culinary crowd. And thank you, Wenjie and Junyi, for your outstanding service. Quality service really helps make the meal a delight rather than a frustration. OK, let's begin with the food. Adequate at best. The place was not busy and still we waited for an hour to get the first part of our 3 plate meal. My guess is there is only one chef and he doesn't want to hire anybody to help so he/she can suck up all of the profits. Anybody rating this place highly is only doing so because they think if you are paying a high price you must be getting something special. Well, they're right. The special is your wallet served up on a platter. You can get better food at lower prices with better service just on the other side of I-85 along Pleasant Hill. Maybe a whole 3 miles away from this misnamed Taste of China. In terms of the waitresses I truly feel sorry for them as they are taking the heat that should be applied to the chef and or owner. When you ask about what is happening with your meal the only response seems to be, "They're cooking now." Does not mean they are cooking your meal now. Could be that they are waiting Xi Jinping to show up before the chef gets it together. Here's a hint, Xi has better places to eat at than this over priced dive. Oh, and in case anyone wants to offer the opinion that I do not know good Chinese cuisine, try on the FACT that my wife is Chinese and is very well respected for her skills with a wok or pretty much any other cooking utensil. And even she said this place blows. So sadly for the losers who ranked this place highly, you're not that good at picking oriental restaurants. read more
