This out-of-the-way sandwich shop seems to cater to folks who "work for a living" and value good prices over artisan cheese. And they certainly deliver. I had the Italian Sub and it was as good as any I've had elsewhere. There was no waiting to be served, although I did arrive well past the lunch business. I was able to upgrade the sandwich into a "meal" with a soft drink and bag of chips, for a total cost of $10.99! None of the chain sandwich shops could have matched that price for the sandwich alone. Was craving a deli sandwich and wanted to try somewhere near - Mastro's popped up at the top of the list and was very close by. I had actually bookmarked Mastro's years ago and forgot all about it. This is a very no frills space located right on the corner - no inside seating but a couple round tables outside. Plenty of available street parking. There only appeared to be one woman working - she was a bit slow to greet me initially but had her back turned and I think may not have noticed I was there. She was happy to answer my questions and accommodating when making my sandwich. I opted for the italian sub but didn't want something very bread heavy so got the rye bread instead. While the rye bread was tasty, it was just Orowheat, which was disappointing to see all the breads were just sandwich bread you'd get in the store rather than home made or made by someone local. The sandwich itself had cheddar, provolone, bologna, salami, and capitola ham - all of which was very fresh. However, the amount of meat/cheese felt a bit minimal, especially when looking back at previous photos. For the very reasonable price though, l understand why maybe they cut down the amount of meat/cheese vs raise prices. Maybe add an option for double meat/cheese for an extra fee? It comes traditionally with mayo, mustard, italian dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion, peppercini but I just got lettuce, mayo, and italian dressing. Avocado was an optional add on for a reasonable $1 but because I had avocado at home I just added it at home. The sandwich itself was very tasty and enjoyable - I wish though instead of mayo and italian dressing they had used olive oil, vinegar, and oregano, which is more traditional and healthier. They also had potato salad and macaroni salad for only $2 - I got half and half and while they were both fine, nothing necessarily stood out about them. It was a nice little add on if you don't want chips. Speaking of chips, they had a very large selection of chips and bottle drinks. This wouldn't necessarily be my first stop if I am feeling very hungry, given that the sandwich felt pretty small (although I imagine on the sub roll it wouldve been a lot more filling). However, I will definitely be back if I am craving an inexpensive deli sandwich - it is hard to find lunch anywhere for under $10 and I appreciate that they keep the prices affordable. Seeing as they have been around for what appears to be 10+ years, I imagine they know their demographic and cater to that. read more

So my staff has been heading here for years as it is only a few blocks away from the office but it was a nice day out so I took a walk to grab a sandwich. The establishment is nestled in between some older business and like, a train track? When you walk in, its no bigger than a small bedroom but thats all you need. They have a large selection of chips on a shelf and drinks in the fridge, but the star was the menu. Turn around and check out the selection of sandwiches on an old fashioned sandwich board. The first thing you'll notice are the prices. I literally had to ask my colleague if that was a "2" at the beginning of one of the prices. Less than 3 bucks for a breakfast burrito! I ordered an egg salad sandwich and it was perfection. It is not a foodie destination but if you're looking for an old fashioned sandwich that is very, very reasonably priced, this is it. My sandwich was like, less than $4 bucks. My colleague got a try-tip sandwich for about $6.50. They could have doubled the prices and would STILL be fair. The ladies who work there are SO nice. Whenever we don't have much time for lunch, we call ahead, place in our favorites, and pick it up quickly. You pick the bread and the cheese, and the veggies, plus they weigh the meat on a scale for you before putting it in your respective sandwich. So you know they don't skimp! The ladies who make the sandwiches are always so kind and friendly. We get a large sandwich and make it a combo by adding a bag of chips and soda. Certain large sandwiches like the tri tip don't apply to that deal . But if you get a fountain drink and a bag of chips other than lays (potato lays is a little less, I go big and choose from the variety for a little bit more), it comes out to $7.99! Note: between 2-2.5 stars The location is tucked away behind industrial companies, but it's pretty easy to locate once there. They are at the corner and they do have a small parking lot behind the small store front. The store itself has no seating, but there are two 'picnic' tables outside I presume are meant for dining there if you like. In regards to the store, it's a no frill, order and be served. Should be noted that prices have increased, but looks like the sandwiches and subs are about the same in terms of quantity (comparing previous images). In total, we had an Italian sub as well as a Reuben Sandwich - each were done with a special lunch combination. Price-wise, not a bad deal where one gets a sandwich/sub (large), a bag of chips, and a drink. Service is relatively quick and polite. You can pay with cash or card. The Reuben. Decent amount of meat and sauerkraut provided in the sandwich itself and 3 pickle spears to accompany it. The Russian white sauce is a bit lacking, but it's kind of there. Nothing wrong with the Reuben meat itself, but the sauerkraut is definitely on the bland side. Very subtle acidity and not strong enough to balance the sandwich out in our opinion. In regards to the construct of the sandwich, the bread is multi-grain and three slices are provided. They are toasted and the meat itself is microwave heated instead of a pan-grill or panini-style grill. It comes out as a hot sandwich, but just made differently. The Italian Sub. A large sub and decent quantity, but disappointing still. Mainly because for an Italian sub, it's mean to have olive oil, vinegar, pepper, Italian seasoning, and provolone cheese, but Mastro's Italian sub has American cheddar, mayo, and mustard instead. Next, they have pastrami and salami deli meat in there, but they used bologna (baloney) as the third deli meat, which apparently is a big no-no. So I am told. To me, I thought it was on the cheap end to use bologna and a different type of meat could have been used. What I would have ultimately preferred was not to use American cheddar as I think provolone would have been much better instead. Granted, the meat and cheese are personal preferences. There were some lettuce and pepperoncini in the sandwich itself to offset the sub's savory taste. The bread itself was a bit on the stale side, but it's a decent amount of bread to be had for that price point. All in all, decent for the price point for the Reuben, but debatable for us for the Italian sub. Not bad if you are in the area and want something for value. Appears to me that a lot of people visit the location if they work in the area and are buying a sandwich to eat in their car or back to work to eat. Worth a try for one's opinion, but don't hold extremely high hopes for a great sandwich or sub. read more

I think Mastro's is a carnivores dream come true, because when I say the sandwiches come fully loaded with meat, I'm not kidding.. and cheese for that matter too. It's easy to drive past Mastro's as its located in the business district off Market and Callens Rd., in fact I drove right past it 6 months ago when I was searching for it. They only have street parking, lots of red and white zones, you might find yourself flipping a U to get a space. When we entered it looked like a He Man Woman Haters Club reunion (shout out to little rascal fans) as it was all men from local businesses getting their lunch on. The store itself is clean, lots of lunch size bags of chips to choose from, and a refrigerator full of juices, soda, and waters. There is no seating indoors, but there is a picnic table and chairs outside. The clerks wear hairnets and change gloves when they go from Salads to meats, that impressed me. There is a window inside the shop that is tinted, and if you look hard enough you see a group of workers, cutting up vegetables and other produce in mass quantity and my friend asked about it, apparently they sell product wholesale to other businesses. I ordered the Italian sub, and while I found the meats and cheeses top quality the sandwich itself fell short to me, they used a standard italian dressing out of bottle and very little at that, the bread was dry, and I just wasn't "wowed". My friend ordered a cheese sandwich, now I'm thinking grilled cheese, right?... wrong, it was 5 different cheeses on wheat bread with mustard, lettuce, and pickles... my friend knew it wasn't going to be grilled (I appeared to be the only one in the dark) she ended up only eating half of it, she said it was just too much cheese. She gave it to me, I took it home, removed the pickles and lettuce and grilled it, wasn't bad when it was done right. So while I found the quality of the meats and cheeses to be on the high side, I would probably only go back if someone I knew wanted to go. I used to eat here 3 times a week when I glassed surfboards near them. This is hands down one of the most unchampioned joints in town. The ladies at Mastro's must be working some kind of sandwich sorcery in the backroom, because the BBQ beef sandwich is one of the most simple, yet eloquent lunch items I've ever had. Any and all typical sandwiches are offered, I went for the special of the day which was a BBQ tri-tip with all sorts of fresh veggies. I was in heaven after the first bite. Thinly sliced tri-tip that was tender and flavorful, great wood fired BBQ taste, hardly any sauce needed. Fresh bread and veggies rounded out what was 5 minutes of pure sandwich bliss. I damn near bit my fingers off I was devouring it so quickly. Mastro's is a simple sandwich gem tucked away in an off the beating path industrial park. This place has no customer service skills the little girl that works behind the counter was so rude. I came in with my family ordered a couple sandwiches and a pasta.
